The city claims the delay came after Pick

Joubert said they expect to be able to open

their new store by the end of June.

Our Pick n Pay Local format has been de-

signed to trade in smaller premises, while

ensuring that we offer our customers thewi-

dest possible range to choose from, he said.

According to Cheryl Walters, director of

the planning and building development ma-

nagement department at the city, the buil-

ding plans were submitted on 9 October but

amendments were identified and it was sent

back to the architect from B-Arc Africa Ar-

    chitects on 29 October.

The plan was with the architect for 22

days andwas again resubmitted to the citys

northern district office on 20 November. It

then needed to be circulated again to the ap-

    plicable internal departments.

On 16 January the plan was sent back to

the same architect again, due to a provisio-

nal road issue that the architect needed to

resolve with the Western Cape government.

The planwaswith the architect for another

58 days from 16 January to 14 March.

In total, the plan was with the architect

for 80 days due to the fact that it was incom-

    plete, she said.

Then, from 14 to 31 March, the planning

    and building development management de-

partment underwent a data migration pro-

cess to the new Development Application

Management System (DAMS) to improve ef-

    ficiency.

This period was communicated to stake-

holders and the submission of newapplicati-

    ons and/or transactions requiring payment

    were affected, Walters stated.

The planwas resubmitted during this pe-

riod and, while being scrutinised, it was

found that the architect only indicated inter-

nal alterations and not the additional floor

space for which additional fees were requi-

    red.

This caused a delay with the architect.

Because the system upgrade was underway,

no additional fees could be invoiceduntil the

new DAMS system went live on 1 April,

    Walters said.

It is important tonote that theCity iswor-

    kinghard to accommodate all customersand

urges all applicants to assist in speeding up

the approval process by ensuring that their

submissions are as accurate and complete as

    possible.

    Toavoid similar situations, theCity advi-

ses all customers to submitmore detailed ap-

plications, to apply the clean plan approach

and, most importantly, to first arrange a pre-

consultative meeting to discuss the issues

and resolve them before a plan is submit-

    ted, she said.

Line shops at the Kenridge Centre are feeling the pinch due to reduced foot traffic after the 711

supermarket moved out in October last year. Pick n Pay are due to take over as anchor tenants

but their plans to open have been delayed by at least six months. PHOTO: ESM ERASMUS

    A

fter a lifetime of abuse, three brave

young people have broken the silence

on the abuse they have suffered and

taken a daring stand against their tormen-

    tor.

Not only did local siblings Teri-Ann Ro-

binson (18), Kailee Robinson (16) and Jason

Roberts (22) empower themselves by wri-

ting about their terrible experience on

their Facebook page, they have created a

platform for others in the same situation to

    do the same.

In essence, their Facebook page, started

eight months ago, is a forum created by

teenagers for teenagers to speak out against

abuse and violence in their homes.

The siblings decided to go public with

their own abuse after realising the despera-

te plight shared by many of their peers at

    school.

After we started talking about our own

circumstances, a floodgate of other, similar

stories reached our ears, says Kailee

    Nowhere to turn

Somany other kids in our school toldme

they dont know whom to turn to or speak

to about abusive situations at home or el-

sewhere, which gave us the idea, adds Te-

    ri-Ann.

A post on their page best describes their

    objective.

Our intention was to speak outFur-

thermore, our situation is meant to assist

anyone and help is given privately or peo-

ple are referred if neededThe idea is also

to empower ourselves and others, to heal

our trampled lives as best aswe can.We are

    not victims we are survivors.

Their personal ordeal has been endless.

Since we can remember it has always

been the same. He has abused us and our

    mom verbally, emotionally, physically and

    even financially, says Kailee.

I cannot remember the amount of times

I have wiped the spit off my mothers face,

or the amount of times we had to listen to

his threats, often financial, which preven-

tedmymother from leaving him for the lon-

    gest time, adds Terri-Ann.

    No stability

Due to their abusers financial reckles-

sness the family was forced to move 17 ti-

mes in 19 years and are again looking for

    accommodation.

    In a recent documentaryKailee produced

for the Facebook page, she quotes what she

calls The Famous Lines of the abuser.

Keep on doing that, and just watch and

see what I do!, I do what I want, when I

want and no one can stop me!, are just a

few of the wounding threats thrown their

    way over the years.

Apart from never having stability, the

abuse has left us afraid and without confi-

dence formost of our lives.Nobody can ima-

gine the hurt and pain weve suffered. This

is the first time thatwehave spoken out and

    it feels good.

    Durbanville behoorlik beet.

Wynand Theron (67), n gebore Vrystater,

Di

boek is tot vandag toe sy gunsteling.

Ekwas nog altyd lief virNamibi en die

feit dat alDoc se romans indi landafspeel,

het natuurlik in my kraal gepas. Niemand

kon oor Namibi skryf soos hy nie!

Self was Theron egter net een keer inNa-

mibi in 1967 vir drie weke as weermags-

    oldaat vir opleiding op Grootfontein.

Theron was 28 toe hy sy eerste Doc Im-

items is.

    meestal minder as 5000.

Uit nood het hy Doc in 2003 n paar keer

in Windhoek gebel en met hom gekorres-

pondeer. Hywas so gaaf om virmy n hele

Hoewel hy hom nooit persoonlik ontmoet

gekry.

Ek is baie geluk-

    Ander vloek

Hoewel Die vloek van Kupfertal hom bly

ontwyk, het Theron n ander vloek oorwin

di van depressie. Toe hy in 2002 as senior

    bestuurder van die pensioen-administrasie-

afdeling by Sanlam, afgetree het, het reaktie-

we depressie toegeslaan. Dit het gevoel of ek

in n le gat instap en moes my lewe van

    vooraf opbou.

we.

    naarsvereniging, waar hy kampvegter is

    Self n skrywer

Hy is ook n kranige skrywer. Hy het on-

dermeer navorsing gedoen oor die Laings-

    burg-vloedramp en n Power Point-aanbie-

ding daaroor saamgestel, wat tans in die

    Laingsburg-museum en op die webblad

    van die Laingsburg-vloedramp vertoon

    word.

    geskiedenis geskryf.

Hy stel ook belang in ou kerkgeboue en

windpompe. En dan is daar sy belangstel-

    ling in Nasa se ruimteprogram

    terkom hulle word agtervolg nie.

Dt kom n n voorval verlede Woens-

dag omstreeks 22:25, waarin n man, wat

    vermoedelik vanaf n restaurant agter-

volg is, in sy huis se oprit in Hofmeyers-

    traat in Kenridge beroof is.

    Diemanwas besig in symotorhuis toe

vyf mans, van wie twee gewapen was,

    besittings oorhandig.

    Paniekknoppie

Die man het n paniekknoppie by hom

gehad en het dit geaktiveer. Die rowers

    iswegmet syBlackberry-selfoon, nLon-

    gines-armhorlosie, sy huis- enBMW-mo-

    items is sowat R5 400.

    werkleurige Toyota Prado of Fortuner

    weggejaag.

Kol. Theo Fisher van die Durbanville-

    polisie het gewaarsku dat soortgelyke

    voorvalle elders voorgekom het waarin

mense agtervolg is en dan beroof word.

    Modus operandi

    nMercedes-viertrekvoertuig is invan

die ander voorvalle gebruik, het hy ges.

Die modus operandi behels dat mense

    vanaf n winkelsentrum, restaurant of

kuierplek agtervolg en dan by hul huis

    Duck pond gives

    way to ecodam

site of the upgraded dam with his Yorkshire Terrier, Pepe.

    T

he dam in the Helderzicht Estate in

    Vierlanden, Durbanville is no longer

just a duck pond overpopulated with

    carp.

    It is set tobecomeandenvironmentallyba-

lanced water feature thanks to the residents

    themselves upgrading and landscaping the

dam at a total cost of R343 128.

The dam was emptied last week and work

    to reinstitute vegetation began.

All the alien fish, mostly carp, and almost

half of the ducks were removed and given

away, said Nico Cilliers, chairperson of the

    Helderzicht Estate body corporate.

The rest of theducks, about 20 of them, will

soon follow suit, he confirmed. However,

most of these ducks already left to greener

    pastures nearby whenTygerBurger visited

    the new dam on Sunday.

    Upgraded ecosystem

It is hoped that the upgraded damwill pro-

vide an ecosystem such as water polishing

andahabitat for fish, frogs, birds andbenefi-

    cial insects, while discouraging unwanted

    Egyptian geese and carp.

In a report prepared for the Helderzicht

Estate body corporate, Lynda Muller of En-

virosave said if no action was taken, it could

have resulted in the blooming of toxic algae

or drymud, aswell as a build up of nutrients

    in the dam.

During a dry winter, when there is no

possibility of flushing the system, it will cre-

ate the right conditions in summer for the

microcystis or blue green algae blooms,

which are toxic and can cause the death of

birds, fish animals and humans, she stated

    in her report.

Edge planting and the establishment of

    aquatic emergent and submerged plantswill

prevent the build up of nutrients in the sy-

stem. It will provide oxygen and help keep

    the water clear, she stated.

Muller told TygerBurger she will use

tough plants such as reeds and grasses that

will grow in water, as well as some red hot

pokers, arum lilies and dietes for colour to

    begin with.

The refinements will come once we have

established a viable mini ecosystem in and

    around the dam, she said.

    Plans for biodiversity

The main planting will be over by the end

of this week, whereafter it is hoped the dam

    will fill with rain water.

The walls of the breeding island in the

middle of the dam has been heavily eroded

    by thewaveactionof thewater inwindy con-

ditions. Thesewallswill now also be reinfor-

ced with gabion baskets (wire baskets filled

    with rocks).

Rocks have also been arranged at the

stormwater inlet to prevent any further ero-

    tion.

Plans for the dam also include the encou-

ragement of indigenous fish and amphibi-

ans, the manipulation of water levels and

keeping carp and alien predator fish out of

    the system.

The removal of the carp and the introduc-

tion of indigenous fish will attract the many

water birds dependant on them as a food

    source thereby discouraging Egyptian gee-

se, Muller said in her report.

The removal of the carp will also allow

desirable water plants to establish in the sy-

    stem.

This will create a stable aquatic habitat

currently absent from the dam, she said.

Gerry Burger points at the biodegradable coir logs which were erected to stop erosion while the

vegetation, which will be planted this week, grows. PHOTOS: ESM ERASMUS

    the Green Team in Morningstar

    decided to pick up litter,

    because we know the long-term

effects it can have on our

    environment.

The main objective of the day

was to contribute to the change

we want to see in our commu-

nity. As we were picking up

litter in School Street, an ANC

    member drove past us and

shouted that we are stupid to

pick up litter and the DA is

    making fools out of us.

    Some of the children helping

    didnt want to continue because

    they felt intimidated and

    embarrassed. Later that day I

    asked the ANC member to

write a letter to apologise for

the way he behaved, but he

    said no.

As youth leader I feel its my

    duty to address the community

Care or Green Team attempt to

    do something positive in the

Trudie is one of eight enthusiastic

    new entrepreneurs who successful-

    Another student, Elizabeth

    managing my money matters and

my life in general. My relationships

with friends and family have also

    improved, she said.

Her goal is to grow her business

    by employing and training other

    unemployed women.

Thebake for profit course is an in-

    tense eight-week course with stu-

    dents attending practical training

once a week. They also learn life

    skills, discipleship and business

skills on another day of the week.

    Theyhave to apply these business

    next training session.

In this way, students are effecti-

vely encouraged to start their mini-

    The students graduate from the

    course feeling empowered and con-

fident that they are now able to

make a difference in their lives and

    in the community, she said.

    The strong bonds built during

the course have also enabled stu-

dents to support each other and de-

    velop solutions for common chal-

    lenges.

Sixteen students from the El Shad-

    recently received their certificates

    for the Toastmasters Youth Leader-

    ship course.

After a seven week programme of

training in public speaking and lea-

dership skills, the students hosted a

gala evening to show off their new

skills to parents, friends and tea-

    chers.

Students learnt how to use diffe-

rent tools, such as vocal variety and

body language, to present a power-

    ful speech.

They learned not just to give a

great speech, but to become more

comfortable in front of an audience

and confident in what they say, no

    matter their previous experience,

said one of the facilitators, Sandra

    Dicks.

There is an opportunity for each

person to learn something new and

to acknowledge each other and be-

come leaders, said one of the stu-

    dents, Moriah-Jane Lorentz.

They learned to be that leader

upfront or even just the one in the

background, but each one became a

    leader of change, she said.

The drama students of the Acting Hope Dra-

ma School presented an outreach day at

House of Grace to entertain the children and

teach them life lessons through theatre.

The drama school was founded by Ingrid

Burger in 2012 as a community project for

    theMrsUnitedNations SouthAfrica compe-

    tition.

She wanted to use her talents as a drama

teacher to enrich the lives of childrenwithin

    her community.

Burger, a teacher at Gene Louw Primary

School, was crowned as the 2014Mrs United

    Nations South African winner.

Her drama students also collected food

and other necessities for the 26 children in

the care of Aletta Herbst at House of Grace

and spent the afternoon playing with the

    children.

It is important for children to learn that

children around them all need to be accep-

ted, loved and be given hope, said Burger.

The childrenare encouraged to start using

their talents to make a difference in their

    communities.

The Acting Hope Drama School gives

children the opportunity to use their talents

in drama to touch the lives of children in the

The Vierlanden Security Forum is calling

    on all residents inVierlanden inDurbanvil-

le to sign up to make the project successful.

For security forums to be successful

each resident should subscribe to the philo-

sophies, regulations and activities of their

    neighbourhood watches, said Gareth Ley-

bourne, chair of Vierlanden Security Fo-

    rum (VSF).

The VSF is beefing up the service it of-

fers to residents. To be effective though, eve-

ryone needs to be involved in securing the

neighbourhood. We call on all residents to

    register asmembers onourwebsite, become

involved and, if possible, assist with activi-

    ties, he said.

Active members reinforce the security of

the neighbourhood and the VSFs objective

is to provide a credible framework that uni-

tes the community, promotes a philosophy

of looking out for each other, strengthens

    neighbourhood bonds and reduces crime,

    said Leybourne.

Not all residents can patrol, but all resi-

dents can be alert to whats happening

    around their own homes.

They can prevent crime by reporting

    suspicious or irregular behaviour.

    Interested residents can register online.

V Visit www.vsf.org.za to register as a member of

VSF. In case of emergency, contact the VSFs control

    room on 0860 666 662.
