    children.

The owners of Study Xpress, Ivan Grobler

    FROM PAGE 1

All this sparked a downward spiral in op-

eration as one after the other tutor re-

    signed andmore disgruntled parents took

their children out of the centre.

TygerBurger was informed that, in the

meantime, the owner of the building in

which Study Xpress opened its centre in

    WellingtonRoad inJanuary last year, told

Study Xpress to vacate the building.

At the beginning of the term this result-

ed in the primary school children being

    moved to premises inDeVilliersRoad, op-

    posite the building.

According to a mother of a high school

pupil, her child phoned her on the first

day of the term to tell her that they have

all been removed from the buildingwhere

his mother dropped him off that morning.

This came without any prior notice or

    warning.My child could not tellmewhere

they were and only after I phoned the offi-

ces of Study Xpress, I knewwhere to fetch

my son later that day after school, she

    said.

In an email to parents late last Thurs-

day, Ivan Grobler wrote: In an unfortu-

nate turn of events, all of our facilitators

have decided to resign with immediate ef-

fect. For the past three months we as

Study Xpress have had to fight hard to

keep the centre afloat following the allega-

tions made by the WCED and TygerBur-

    ger.

These allegations prompted a series of

events that ultimately lead to an almost

impossible task of re-establishing our rep-

    utation and maintaining staff morale.

Chantelle and I have had to make the

very difficult decision to close the centre

    indefinitely and with immediate effect.

This doesnt mean that we have no al-

ternative option for your child, but it does

mean that we will have to re-evaluate our

options over the next couple of days.

There definitely is a way forward, but

we understand that the disruption and

change might not be what you want for

your child. We would like to meet with

you in person to discuss the possibilities.

    However, Lieze Puren, previously a

branchmanager at Study Xpress, said the

tutors resigned because they did not re-

ceive their salaries for three months.

She had a meeting this past Sunday

    witha fewparents to advise themonaway

    forward. She said Impak recommended

that the childrens June exams be post-

poned to 4 July and that the children all

take a three-week winter holiday now.

Although she stated in an email to par-

ents that she will open an Impak study

    centre onWednesday 1 June, allegations

that I am just continuing the StudyXpress

    business, is unfounded, she said.

I am looking at new opportunities, as

I am now also unemployed, but no deci-

sion has yet been taken, she said.

It was not possible to reach Grobler by

telephone for comment despite several at-

    tempts.

When questioned about the closure of

Study Xpress by email to Grobler, he re-

plied: I decline to render any statement

at this time as thematter is sub judice. We

    deny any irregularities.

A former tutor, Gerhard Swift, also dis-

closed to TygerBurger that he resigned

afterwe found themarks of some children

    were moderated.

The marks of one high school student,

    who battled with mathematics, were

    changed from 16% to 80%.

The centre also took in children with

learning barriers, but we were only two

teachers who were equipped to teach

    them, he said.

Groblerwas summoned to appear in the

small claims court in Bellville yesterday

afternoon for a claim of R6676 for 2016

school fees byRenHerbst, one of the first

    parents to question Study Xpress.

The claim is the full refund of 2016s

school fee for non-delivery of services no

classes or subjects given, and also based

on the findings that Study Xpress was an

unregistered school. The outcome of the

case was not known at the time of going

to print. Small court claimswere also sub-

    mitted by three other parents.

The high school students of Study Xpress were moved to new premises in The Crescent Street in Durbanville at the beginning of this term

without any prior notice to the parents.

    he well-known owner of Rusla-

    mere Hotel, Spa and Confer-

    ence Centre in Durbanville was

tragically killed in a head-on colli-

    sion near Carnarvon last Thursday.

    Russell Henri Rathbone (54), fond-

ly known as Rusty, and his wife, Gis-

ela, were part a convoy of four vehi-

cles on a vacation trip to Botswana

where they would have visited the

    Okavango Delta among other places.

    According to Val Killian, his

    friend and colleague at Ruslamere,

    they were travelling towards Car-

narvon just after they had lunch at

    Calvinia when his Landrover collid-

ed head-on with an oncoming truck.

He was driving third from front

in the convoy and the first two vehi-

cles both had to swerve severely to

get out of the way of the truck, but Russell

was not so lucky, Killian said.

    Trip goes ahead

He was killed instantly. Gisela sustained

minor injuries and was transported to a

hospital in Carnarvon, where she was kept

    overnight. She flewhomewitha friend from

Durbanville who went to fetch her from

    Kimberley the next morning.

The rest of the convoy continued their

    trip to Botswana.

They were persuaded to continue their

    vacation, as that iswhatRussellwouldhave

wanted. They were planning this vacation

    formonths, saidhis brother, EdwardRath-

    bone from East London.

Many tributes inmemory of Russell were

posted to his family on Facebook.

Killian wrote: Your husband and father

was a much loved person and has been the

driving force behind this company. His ded-

icated and selfless services were many and

    varied. His contributions to Ruslamerewill

not be forgotten and his friendships cher-

    ished for ever.

Russell was a remarkable man. Know-

ing him personally as I did for many years,

I am well aware of the difference he made

in the lives of many people, both here in the

company, the community, and in his pri-

    vate life.

Another friend posted: Gonna miss you

buddy, always smiling, never a bad thing to

be said about anything or anyone.

Known you for 12 years, lots of funny,

lots of serious, lots of business, but most of

all, loads of love and space for everyone in

your big heart, reads another message.

Russell grew up on a family farm in the

Kwelera district in East London. After

school he joined the police service as a radio

    technician for his military service.

He joined the police service permanently

    for four to fiveyears beforeheandhis

brothers started a business in the re-

    conditioning of drums. Russell ran

    his business, Consolidated Drums,

for almost 17 years, and in 2004

bought the land in Durbanville on

    which he developed the Ruslamere

    Hotel, Spa and Conference Centre.

    Rusty Oak Bistro

About two years ago he also con-

verted an old garage on the property

into the popular Rusty Oak Bistro.

He was an ardent biker and ad-

    venturer, his brother, Edward, said.

Russell was a member of the BMW

Motorcycle Club and took part in sev-

    eral motorcycle trips with friends,

one of which over 17 000km through

    the Australian dessert about five

    years ago.

Russell was one of the founders of

Cape Town North, a website which

aims to develop tourism in the northern

suburbs, as well as other tourism organisa-

tions. He was also very much involved in

his community and church, the El Shaddai

    Christian Church.

He influenced a lot of people even peo-

ple he has never met before, were touched

by his postings on Facebook, Edward said.

Apart for his wife, Gisela, he leaves be-

hind two children, Robin (21) and Rayne

(23), as well as two brothers, Edward from

East London and Alon from Port Elizabeth,

and his mother, Nola Rathbone from Mil-

    nerton.

A funeral service will be held tomorrow

    (Thursday 19May) from15:00 at theElShad-

dai Christian Church in Lords Walk Road

in Durbanville. After the service there will

be a reception with refreshments at the

Rusty Oak Bistro. People are requested to

leave their vehicles at the church and walk

    the short distance to Ruslamere.

    At approximately 4h00, the

    lives of two teenagers,

    Michael Labuschagne and

    that two other vehicles

were on the road at that

    time. One is reported to

    have been a white double

was a smaller, silver car. In

    arge volumes of paperwork docu-

    ments with objections that accompa-

nied an appeal in front of the Planning

    andGeneral Appeals Committee (Planap) of

the City of Cape Town are to blame for the

oversight of not taking these objections into

consideration when deciding an appeal to

approve a controversial high density devel-

opment in the heart of Rosedale Estate in

    Durbanville.

At its meeting on Friday 15 April, Planap

approved this application for rezoning and

subdivision approval to permit a private

    group housing development between Son-

neweelde Street and Via Ferenze Road in

    Rosedale Estate.

This development by Rosdev Trust of the

circular shaped 5151 m erf in the centre of

Rosedale Estatewill consist of 18 double sto-

rey housing units with one access road

via the existing security access to Rose-

    dale.

The developer appealed against an earlier

decision of subcouncil 7 (Koeberg) in May

last year to not approve it after a total of

    58 objections from surrounding property

    owners, theRosedaleHomeOwnersAssoci-

ation and the Durbanville community Fo-

rum were received against the develop-

    ment.

The oversight due to the large volume of

paperwork came to light after the trustees

of Rosedale Home Owners Association re-

    quested an independent investigation on

how their submitted comments on the ap-

peal were not part of the documentation be-

fore Planap on Friday 15 April.

Johan van der Merwe, the Citys mayoral

    committee member for energy, environ-

mental and spatial planning, said on en-

    quiry the comments were inadvertently

left out among the large volumes of paper-

    work that accompanied this matter.

Van derMerwe said the speaker, as chair-

person of Planap, now requested an opinion

from the Citys legal services department to

    determine the way forward.

Corrective steps have already been tak-

en. The City is now processing all applica-

tions, including land use applications such

as this matter, on an electronic workflow

    system.

Comments received during a public par-

    ticipation process are now electronically

    uploaded and automatically date-stamped

at each step for control purposes instead of

being printed out and manually placed as

paper files, Van der Merwe said.

We as trustees of the Rosedale Home

Owners Association request that the deci-

sion of the Planap be put aside until the in-

vestigation is complete, and the missing

documents is fully evaluated as part of the

appeal process, said Colin Koen, a trustee

    member.

We find it surprising, with the amount

    of controversial development applications

over the last two years, that the City inad-

vertently left out the comments of eight ob-

jectors due to large amounts of paper-

    work.

We are awaiting the final report with

great anticipation, specifically as in the 2004

application for phase 2 of Rosedale Estate,

documentation was not received by all par-

ties making an appeal technically invalid,

    Koen said.

    Ouers onthuts oor

    beweerde vuilspel

    ESM ERASMUS

    @erasmusesme

    V

erskeie ouers van die Horskool Dur-

banville is onthuts n beweerde vuil-

    spel in rugbywedstryde verlede Sater-

    note op Wellington.

wedstryd plaasvind.

    ding by die Wellington-polisie aanhangig

lers mekaar n high five gee.

Nog n ma het aanvanklik by TygerBur-

ger gekla oor hoe haar seunmet ondermeer

    Vandi ouershet dieHorskoolHugenote

en die Boland-Rugby-unie hieroor gebel en

    e-posse gestuur.

As n

aankom. Dit sal jammer wees as ouers be-

    stopdat n spelernoodhulpkonontvanghet.

    het nie, het hy ges.

    Reusedeurbraak in huisrooftogte

    ESM ERASMUS

    @erasmusesme

    n

    Vermeende huisrower is verlede

Woensdagnag in die been geskiet en

aangekeer in wat beskou word as n

    reuse-deurbraak in die koevoetbende-roof-

togte in Durbanville, Table View en Melk-

    bosstrand.

Die polisie, operasionale lede van dieMor-

    ningstar-plotwag, Melkbos-buurtwag en die

    Green Platoon-sekerheidsmaatskappy

    bendewatmet tallehuisrooftogte inDurban-

ville, Table View en Melkbosstrand verbind

word. Vier voorvalle is in Maart en April in

    laasgenoemde twee woonbuurte aangemeld,

terwyl meer as vyf huisrooftogte in Januarie

en Februarie in die woonbuurte Aurora, Ver-

    gesig en Van Riebeeckshof-omgewing aange-

    meld is.

Die inhegtenisneming volg n n huisroof-

tog en inbraak in onderskeidelik Altydge-

dachtsingel in Durbanville Hills en by die

    Meerenhof-kompleks in Van Riebeeckshof,

    Bellville.

Volgens lt.kol. Theo Fisher van dieDurban-

    ville-polisie, het die huisrooftog kort n 10:00

plaasgevind by die huis in Durbanville Hills.

paniekknoppie gedruk endie polisie is ont-

    bied.

Daarna, net voor 01:00, was daar n in-

braak by n huis in die Meerenhof-kom-

Dieverdagtes

    is vermoedelik van Namibi.

Van die gesteelde items, onder meer die

Nokia-selfoon en beursie, is by die verdag-

te gevind. Daar het ook n koevoet en hand-

skoene langs hom gel. Die skootrekenaar is

    verder in die gras gevind.

Volgens Khn het hy die volgende oggend

    n Taurus .38 Special-rewolwer, waarvan die

    reeksnommer afgevylwas, verderweg in die

gras gevind. Dis moontlik dieselfde vuurwa-

penwat sowat driemaande gelede in n huis-

rooftog in Table View gebuit is.

    Dis beslis n deurbraakenonsmensevoel

    Vergesig, Durbanville geskiet is inmoontlik

die eerste voorval ng waarin iemand in n

    huisrooftog in Durbanville geskiet is.

Die verdagte is in die regterbobeen getref toe

    n sekerheidsbeampte n waarskuwingskoot

    afgevuur het.

    A

young woman from Kenridge is de-

parting from the Waterfront in Cape

Town tomorrow on her bicycle in a

    gruelling ten-day journey to Pietermaritz-

burg just to take part in her second Com-

    rades marathon the next day.

Guiniver Rogers (25), a former matric

learner from Fairmont High School, is the

youngest member of the Unogwaja Chal-

    lenge team, agroupof 12people fromacross

seven countries, whowill take on this jour-

    ney.

Theywill cycle about 1700km in tendays

to Pietermaritzburg and then the very

next day run in the ultimate human race,

    the Comrades marathon, over 89km.

    TheUnogwajaChallengewas initiated to

honour and follow in the footsteps of Com-

    rades legend Phil Masterton-Smith, whose

    nickname was Unogwaja meaning

hare inZulu. In 1931 at 19hewas theyoung-

    est ever Comrades marathon winner.

    However, in 1933, Masterton-Smith

couldnt afford the train fare from Cape

Town to run in the Comrades, so he cycled

the 1700 km from Cape Town to Pieterma-

ritzburg and finished the race in tenthposi-

    tion.

Unknowingly to him at the time, this

would later inspire this incredible journey

of heart, leading people to help make a dif-

ference and impact on the lives of others,

    explains Rogers, a quantity surveyor.

We will be raising awareness and mon-

ey for the Unogwaja Light Fund. I am pas-

sionate about people and making a differ-

    ence in this beautiful country.

I was fortunate enough to be raised in

a wonderful and loving home, receiving a

good education and being allowed to dis-

cover my God-given talents in sport, and I

simply want to see all future generations

given that same opportunity, she says.

Our focus is aimedatprimary school ed-

ucation in South Africa and this year we

will be raising money for the Umsilinga

Primary School just outside of Pieterma-

    ritzburg, she continues.

Each team member is obligated to raise

    aminimumofR50 000 towards theUnogwa-

ja fundraising campaign. Rogers hosted a

fundraising trail run this past Saturday at

    Rhebokskloof Wine Estate.

To prepare for the cycling, she took part

in the Coronation Double Century race

over 202km in Swellemdam in November

last year, as well as the Cape Town Tour

    in March.

Her best achievement, however, was in

January in the Half Iron Man triathlon, in

which she finished fifth in the 25 to 29 year

    age category for women.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    We should

    nurture our

    nurses

They are our friends, our confidants, our

    doctors and our carers.

They come in our darkest hours and

they alleviate our pain and our loneli-

    ness.

Our heroes, our fathers and mothers,

our teachers and our punching bags.

    Societys shame.

The ridiculous salary of a nurse should

make us all sleep a little more uncomfort-

    ably at night.

You know those days when you feel as

if something is wrong, but you cant put

    a finger on it?

Its probably the feeling of guilt.

Many think a thank you is all that is

expected from us when a nurse tends to a

    loved one in hospital.

Im obviously not a nurse, so I cant

speak for them, but while I would

appreciate a thank you as a nurse, it

    does not pay the rent.

Dear landlord, I regret to inform you

    that I dont have

    the cash to pay you

    this month, but I

    do have 18 234

    thank-yous.

    Nurses have

    protested before

    and they will

    again. What they

    most likely wont

    do is cause an

    international scene

    by throwing bricks

    at police, burning

    books and destroy-

    ing property.

    Of all the calls

for justice out there, the one that moves

me the most is whispered by the poverty-

    stricken nurse.

    The world is upside down.

In far too many sectors those who work

hardest earn the least. So, how does

society deal with this obvious injustice?

We give them a day, of course!

    World Teachers Day.

    International Firefighters Day.

    International Nurses Day!

The latter was celebrated on Friday,

but really, if I were a nurse, a salary

increase would have benefitted me more.

There is an argument that a nurse is a

nurse because it is his/her passion to

help people. People will say nurses would

do what they do for free, as long as they

can fulfil their calling. I can only laugh

at this line of self-justification, which is

    clearly born from guilt.

Nurses deserve so much more than a

special day, more than a thank-you, and

even more than a substantial raise.

They deserve more than a short piece

    in a community newspaper.

    In spite of Jacob Zumas

promise that there would be no

    power outages this winter,

    there are other forces which

    may show their ugly faces.

    When the first winter storm

hit the Cape on 22 April, my

    neighbours and my electricity

    flickered at about 17:00 and

    then went out.

    It appeared that everyone

else in the street had lights

except the two of us. Not

    worried, we both phoned the

    emergency number 086 010 3089

    as they have always been

    exceptional in their response to

    whatever the problem was.

    Not this time, unfortunately.

Between the two of us, we

    must have spent several hours

waiting for an answer from the

    emergency number, but to no

    avail.

The long and short of it was

that apart from two hours on

    Saturday afternoon when the

    technicians came out after I

sent an e-mail from work in

    desperation, and after they had

    left, the electricity tripped

    again. We were without

    electricity for the whole

    weekend until Sunday night at

    22:00.

    What happened was that

    when whoever dug trenches to

    lay fibre optic cables, they

    ruptured one of the electric

    cables which supplies power to

our two houses. The repair had

    not been done correctly and

    when the wet reached the

    cables, it caused a short.

    The technicians who came

    out on Sunday night and

    worked for two hours to

    restore our power were fantas-

tic, to say the least. They said

that as a result of all the

    damage the storm had caused,

the telephone lines as well as

    the SMS lines were totally

    overloaded. It appears that the

    only e-mail address which was

    successful in making contact,

    was FaultReporting.Cen-

    [email protected] and this

was given to me by an ESKOM

employee who was one of the

    Somuch for no

    load shedding

    Many thanks to the Kenyan

    government, CITES, local and

    international anti-poaching

    activists and all the celebrities

    that witnessed the torching of

ivory and rhino tusks in Kenya.

    Thank you for ensuring that

    the poaching of elephants and

rhinos will not only thrive, but

    is poised for growth.

. What is the logic or motive

    of burning the tusks worth

    millions when you could have

    supplied and met demand for

such, for many years to come

    and easing poaching activities?

. Why would you choose to

    forego over US$105m in reve-

    nue, when in Southern Africa

    auctions were held and revenue

generated went a long way in

    fighting poaching?

    . How different is someone

killing an elephant or a rhino

    from someone who ensures the

supply of ivory and rhino tusks

    is constrained even when the

    animal dies of natural causes?

    . From your action when

can we start to see the decline

    in poaching activities?

    Unfortunately, an equivalent

    of living elephants and rhinos

    that would yield the same

quantity of tusks will now be

    slain because you denied that

    market that amount of ivory

and rhino tusks which you had.

I have often wondered why it is

shoved her face into the dirt

    while strangling her? Did they

    consider her human rights and

    oordiversiteit, inklusiwiteit en trans-

    formasie by die Universiteit Stellen-

bosch het n pinksterreeks by die NG Kerk

    Durbanville gekenmerk.

Prof. Nico Koopman, dekaan van die fa-

kulteit teologie en vise-rektor van die Uni-

versiteit Stellenbosch, het van 9 tot 13 Mei

die pinksterreeks met die tema Saam ge-

lei.

    Hierdie kontroversile temas, wat so-
