kers. Hullemaak strate skoon, tel rommel op,

verwyder graffiti en maak plekke (hot-

spots) skoon waar mense urineer en ontlas.

Die geld hiervoor word deur twee kerke

voorsien, maar Mes bestuur waar di spanne

hul werk moet doen.

NG Kerk Durbanville bedryf is, is sedert 7

April vanjaar tydelik gesluit n klagtes oor

asosiale gedrag van die straatmense wat die

    sopkombuis besoek.

    rondgeslenter enouerswathul kinders bydie

    skool kom haal, lastig geval.

distrik, n groot rol. Ons is dankbaar vir n

tydelike tuiste vir die sopkombuis, het hy

    ges.

Die kerke het die gebou binne ingerig,

maar hulle makeer nog n kantoortafel. n

Kragpunt moet nog genstalleer word en

die toilette reggemaak word, het Els ges.

Ons hoop om die maatskaplike werker

teen middel Augustus in haar eie kantoor

    buis n volwaardige gemeenskapskombuis

sal raak waar etes voorberei sal word.

    Uys, wyksraadslid, het aan TygerBurger

ges die opknapwerk by die taxi-staanplek

is uitgebrei om n gemeenskapskombuis in

te sluit, waar die sopkombuis permanent

gehuisves sal word. Dit is deel van die Stad

    se Wreld-Ontwerpstad-projek.

    Mensemoet n ruimtehwaarhulle kan

sit en eet. Die idee is ook dat die Fisante-

kraal Centre for Development dit ook kan

gebruik vir hul Bake for Profit-kursus

he grass is totally overgrown al-

most knee-length at the brand new

    R4million Early ChildhoodDevelop-

ment (ECD) centre in Fisantekraal, de-

spite it having been officially handed over

to the City of Cape Town in February this

    year.

Yet no little feet are roaming its

grounds, theres no laughter and shrieks

    on the playground.

The facility in Boy Briers Road, which

can accommodate 165 children from in-

fants to Grade R, was the result of a suc-

    cessful partnership between four major

companies in the Western Cape and the

    Garden Cities Archway Foundation.

An amount of R1,7 million was donated

    by companiesAfrimat, Corobrik, Joosten-

berg and Ciolli Brothers for the construc-

tion of the crche on land donated by the

    City.

    The Garden Cities Archway Founda-

    tion then matched the donation.

The centre consists of five classrooms,

an office and staff room and a committee

room. There is a large kitchen, ablution

    facilities and an enclosed courtyard.

The City was criticised at the handover

in February for taking eight months to

    sign the agreement.

    The advertising for service providers

closed on 13 March. That was followed by

an appeal period of 30 days, ending on 13

    April.

Now, five months after the handover,

no operator has yet been appointed to run

    the facility.

    On enquiry, Suzette Little, mayoral

    committee member for social develop-

    ment and early childhood development,

    said there was no problem.

We are still finalising the internal sup-

    ply chain management processes, she

    said.

According to Little, a report will be

served before subcouncil 7 (Koeberg) in

August to solicit comment on the appoint-

    ment process.

TygerBurger was informed that the ap-

plication by one of the current crche

    ownershas been approvedbut no contract

    has been signed.

The Fisantekraal Crche Forum, an or-

    ganisation representing 16 existing

crche owners in Fisantekraal, was se-

verely opposed to the ECDcentre, but that

    has been resolved, said Little.

The City has secured their support for

    the programme through constructive dia-

logue and engagement with the local ECD

    forum members, she said.

The centre has already been equipped

with essential ECD resource materials in

preparation for its opening, said Little.

We have a contractor on site to finalise

the assembly of office furniture and other

    equipment.

We expect it to be operational by early

September, after the completion of all reg-

ulatory aspects relating to the supply

    chain management processes, she said.

    The forum chairperson, Monica Abra-

hams, earlier told TygerBurger that one

of their concerns was road safety as the

location of the crche was adjacent to the

minibus taxi rank on busy Boy Briers

    Road.

The City confirmed two speed humps

and a raised pedestrian crossing are pro-

posed for Boy Briers Road in the vicinity

    of the ECD centre.

    Implementation is planned before the

    endof the year, saidPriyaReddy, spokes-

    person for the City.

    A

big thump!, is what Gerald de

Bruyn heard when a car hit a

    hawk on Sunday.

He saw the entire incident, fromwhen the

VWGolf hit the low-flying bird, to thewind-

screen wiper coming off, to the owner stop-

ping, picking up the wiper blade and spee-

    ding off again, swearing.

De Bruyn very gently takes out the bird,

with its nostrils still covered in dry blood,

and its one eye bloody and swollen shut, to

    show to TygerBurger.

He had built the bird amakeshift bed and

soft shelter in a contraption resembling a

    trolley, but not quite.

From the middle of the resident milk cra-

te, DeBruyn, who is homeless, takes out the

    bird.

He was much wilder yesterday when I

found him, he explains as the bird, with

its feet loosely tied, snaps at his hands.

If I could have the opportunity to name

it, Id call it Pure White. Not because its

white, but because it is innocent, he said.

That driver of the Golf had no idea what

kind of bird he hit. It is a hawk. You dont

just hit a hawk and drive off. I saw it and

immediately scooped it up, De Bruyn said.

De Bruyn brought the bird to the shop in

    Bellvilles CBD on Monday whe-

re he normally goes to sell the

bric-a-brac given to him by resi-

    dents.

The owner of the shop in Kort

    Street, Steven Erasmus, then

    proceeded to call TygerBurger,

    not knowinghow tohandle the si-

    tuation.

The bird had a tag from the

    University of Cape Town (UCT)

    tied around its foot.

    Professor Peter Ryan of UCTs

    Percy Fitzpatrick Institute of Af-

    rican Ornithology told Tyger-

Burger the bird might belong to

    Safring, a national bird-ringing

    unit that tracks birds move-

ments and survival on a national

    database.

It is most likely a black spar-

    rowhawk or a peregrine (fal-

con), he said at the time. But it

    is definitely not my bird.

    TygerBurger alerted the Cape

of Good Hope SPCA which in

turn arranged for a nearby emer-

gency vehicle to pick up the bird.

    The driver, Farrent Dlula, was

previously at a nearby branch of

    the Tygerberg Animal Hospital

and made his way down to the

    CBD to collect the animal.

The case will be referred to

    our wildlife department and ta-

ken to Grassy Park, he said.

    A

ccording to data released by Crime

Stats SA last week, some northern su-

burbs are the most affected by crime

in the country in their respective, often

    bloody categories.

    These include Kraaifontein, Table View,

    Bishop Lavis and Delft.

According to the report, at least 5 900 cri-

mes are reported to the police across the

    country each day.

Data released by Crime Stats SA is based

on official information from the police. Ba-

sed on these facts, it would appear the still

high levels of crime were gradually decrea-

    sing.

    The figures reveal rawdatanot inpropor-

    tion topercentage of thepopulation.Theda-

ta covered refer to the statistics for 2014 (co-

vering April 2013 to March 2014).

According to these statistics, Delft ranks

seventh in the Western Cape in the murder

category (144), with Nyanga as the forerun-

    ner at 305.

Kraaifontein ranks seventh in the catego-

ry for reported house break-ins over the ye-

ar, with a total of 1 247, with Table View fol-

    lowing closely with 1 235.

    For drug-related crimes, Delft ranked

    fourth (2 954), Bishop Lavis fifth (2 578) and

    Kraaifontein seventh (2 516). Mitchells

Plain was first with 6 044 cases opened.

Africacheck.org surmises that due to the

time periods between having reported the

stats and the financial year covered, the po-

lices crime data might be as much as six

    months out of date.

Africacheck state many crimes go unre-

ported, police data is unaudited, and there

    iswidespreadmistrust of thepolice, raising

concerns over the legitimacy of the figures.

when it arranged a winter camp

for mostly homeless kids last week.

    Hewlin Compassions Hewitt de Ja-

ger, told TygerBurger more about the

camp which was held from 14 to 17 July

    and included teenagers fromDurbanvil-

    le, Kraaifontein, Brackenfell, Athlone

    and Delft.

    Weve worked with homeless people

in the northern suburbs for the past

three years. Among them are children

    under 18, said Hewitt.

So we decided to take 30 of them on

    this camp.

Hewitt said the camps theme was

Crossroads: What to do when you dont

    know what to do.

The campwas held at the Princessvlei

Eco Adventure Centre in Diep River.

    Our facilitators consisted of social

    workers, community leaders and pas-

    tors, he said.

    Hewitt said their programmes ranged

from life skills sessions to self-worth,

    creativity, team work, problem-solving

    and decision-making, among others.

Among the various activities the chil-

dren enjoyed were playing tag, building

a bonfire and sharing their experiences

    during the group sessions.

The kids had three meals per day, lo-

ads of snacks in between, and lots of ga-

mes to playwith. They eachgot twoblan-

kets and a sleeping bag, each had their

own bed and own bag of toiletries with

a face cloth and towel, he said.

Hewlin Compassion serves as a mem-

ber on the board of the Western Cape

    Streets Childrens Forum. The forum

will be partnering with them during

their annual Amazing GRace event on

    kunstenaar van Durbanville on-

HenryHaarhoff (61)wasnet 23 jaar oud toe

sy regterskouer en arm in n motorfietson-

geluk in Boston, Bellville beskadig is.

Hoewel hy daagliks pyn ervaar enmedika-

    sie gebruikweens chroniese inflammasie, is

hy nie n dag spyt oor sy besluit om sy arm

    te behou nie.

Dis asof jy jou jou arm in kookolie druk,

s intens is die pyn. Maar dit kom in vlae,

vertel hy, terwyl hy tydens die onderhoud

by sy huis in Amanda Glen eers die dooie

arm se hand in sy heup stut, en dan weer in

    sy broeksak druk.

    Studies

Hy was pas klaar met sy weermagoplei-

ding en n sy studies in landbounavorsing

aan die Pretoriase Technikon pas aangestel

    as assistent-wynmaker by Welmoed-kelders

    op die Stellenbossewynroete. Diwynmaak-

kon ek nie my skoenveters vasmaak nie. Ek

aangaanmetmy lewe. Alles is n hurdle om

te cross. Elke keer as ek iets probeer buite

    agentskappe.

my een hand inmy broeksak gedruk, terwyl

wels gedink ek is baie arrogant.

Elke keer as ek iets nuuts aanpak, moet

eksperimenteer of hy beweging sou kon

weergee en het hy n diskusgooier geskep.

Met elke beeld moet ek eers n staalraam

sweis.

gaan doen. Soms moet ek n voet inspan en

goed met my tone vasknyp ... of met my

    mond.

    Allan Boesak

    Nadat n kunstenaarsvriend, Conrad

Theys, die Opperman-beeld gesien het, is hy

bo ander bekende beeldhouers gekies om n

brons-borsbeeld van dr. Allan Boesak te

    maak.Ditwordop 11Augustus by nNGSen-

dingkerk in Bellville-Suid onthul. Beslis n

In n stadium

raak n beeld vir my n persoon en dis n on-

gelooflike gevoel om met n identiteit te

    werk, vertel hy.

Sekere disabilities sit meer in jou kop.

Ek glo as jy iets eers in jou kop kan formu-

leer, kan jy dit doen. Jou hand is net n ver-

Dis eers as jy opgee,

Hy

het die voertuig tweekeer uitmekaar gehaal

    tot hy tevrede was.

    Hyhet ookkleiduif geskiet, radiobeheerde

    keerd bewys.

    On the coldest, wettest mor-

ning the past week I noticed

what I thought was a drunk

old man in our warm waiting

    room. He sat there, soaking

    wet, swinging from side to

side, his head on his chest. I

was annoyed and called two of

our workers to escort him out

as he obviously was not a

client of ours. They gently took

him by the arms, stepping over

the pool of urine by his feet.

    What happened next humbled

    me. These workers, earning a

    very small salary and being

    quite poor themselves, literally

took the clothes off their own

    back to replace his soaked

    clothing. I felt ashamed. He

was given warm coffee and a

blanket. In the end, he was

taken to the police station, as

he did not know how he got to

us. In hindsight, he might have

been ill and not drunk at all.

    What a humbling experience. I

drop my head in shame, but

    have learnt yet another life

    SLICE OF LIFE

    Keer dat ons

    reg in eie

    hande neem

Wanneer mense die reg in hul eie hande

neem om met misdadigers klaar te speel,

moet die gevaarligte vir n land ernstig

    begin flikker.

    In n onverwante voorval vroer

vandeesweek is nege buitelanders en n

    Suid-Afrikaner aan die onderkant van

Leeukop in Kaapstad beroof. Toe die

slagoffers die booswigte n die rooftog

    agtervolg, het die Suid-Afrikaner die

    noodnommer 112 gebel sonder enige

sukses.

as 20 minute lank die 112-noodnommer,

sowel as die polisie se 10111-nommer,

geskakel het. Toe sy uiteindelik na die

    Kaapstad-Sentraal-polisiekantoor deurge-

nie geweet waar Leeukop is nie.

    afwesigheid. Sulke onbeholpe optrede (of

    sorted out sooner? The pedestri-

ocal filmmakers are thrilled that a

South African feature film has won

    awards at two international filmaward

    ceremonies.

The local film Born to Win

    scooped the Golden Crown

    Award for Best Evangelistic

    Feature Film at the Internati-

    onal Christian Visual Media

    Conference (ICVM 2015) in

Orlando, USA on 27 June, on-

    ly three weeks after winning

    theAdamAward forBestFea-

ture Film at the Sabaoth In-

    ternational Film Festival in

Milan, Italy. It also won the

    Bronze Crown Award for

    Best Feature Drama.

    Frans Cronj from Brac-

    kenfell, who also produced

the hit movie Faith Like Potatoes, and Co-

bus van den Berg from Eversdal, producer

of the equally successful Klein Karoo, tea-

med up to produce thismoviewhichwas re-

    leased in August last year.

The film was written and directed by

Cronj, produced by Van den Berg and

    wholly filmed in George.

Born toWin, based on the true story of Le-

on Terblanche, poses the question: Where

    is God?

    TheCrownAwards are the biggest annu-

al film awards in the international Christi-

an film industry and have been in existence

for 60 years, whereas the Sabaoth Festival

is a bi-annual film festival where some of

the best international Christian films are

    screened, says Cronj.

Cronje, who was in Milan and Orlando to

receive the awards, said: We produce our

    films to have maximum perso-

nal impact and not with the go-

al towin awards, but it is great

    to receive recognition for the

    work that we do.

    He said the Golden Crown

    Award in particular helps to

    market the movie world wide.

    We are awaiting the final

    paperwork, but since the an-

    nouncement of the Crown

    Awards a second major Holly-

    wood distributor has expres-

    sed interest in theatrical relea-

se of themovie. I think the qua-

lity and impact of Born to Win,

combined with the success we still have

with Faith like Potatoes created this inte-

    rest, he said.

Faith like Potatoes, released in 2006, is the

true story of Angus Buchan and has been

seen by over 300million people in 17 langua-

ges, with over three million DVDs sold.

Making a film takes a massive team ef-

fort and I am proud of the team we had on

    Born to Win.

Born toWin, available on DVD, will again

be on the big screen in August and October

    New technology installed in ambulances

    across themetro seem tomake emergency

    medics a target for crime.

Three sources in the industry, who do

not want to be identified as they are not

contractually permitted to speak to the

media, say attacks have spiked over the

last few months, especially in Mitchells

    Plain, Manenberg, Hanover Park and

    Khayelitsha.

They believe the spike coincides with

    theprovisionof tablet devices inambulan-

ces, which link medics to the call centre

and provide directions to the scene.

Some medics who have been attacked

have been told to hand over the tablets,

    sources say.

The tablets, according to a source, have

been installed so they are impossible to

remove from the vehicles. The tablets are

also locked and only work on the health

departments system, thus are useless for

    any other user.

The installation of the devices, referred

to as MDTs, cost in the region of R300m,

    sources say.

    Medics have reportedly raised their

concerns with management, but have re-

    ceived no outcome.

They are now calling for the community

to be informed the devices are not remova-

ble and are unusable outside of the ambu-

    lance.

No comment had been received by the

    department of healthbefore going toprint.

    A

s the winter brings increasing num-

bers ofwhales to our shores, the chan-

ces of the giants being tangled in

ropes, nets and lobster traps increases.

    The South African Whale Disentangle-

    ment Network (SAWDN) headedMikeMey-

ers, says on average, 15 to 17 cases of whale

    entanglement are reported every year.

However, this number is increasing annu-

ally as the population increases, he says.

There have been eight cases this year al-

ready and it is only the start of the whale

season, expected to peak in September.

    Tenyears ago, a largenumberof entangle-

    mentswere reported, prompting the depart-

ment of environmental affairs to approach

the lobster industry to fund training from

    an American whale disentanglement spe-

    cialist.

The department invited a range of role-

players and SAWDN was born, with basic

training and handling of equipment taught

    on a mechanical whale tail.

The network now includes a number of

    partners, including the Dolphin Protection

Action Group, National Sea Rescue Insti-

tute (NSRI), Natal Sharks Board, research-

ers and whale watchers, Meyers said. This

has created 17 centres along the South Afri-

    can coast.

A new group is trained every year and

more equipment is manufactured. It costs

about R25 000 to set up a new team.

The network, which is now the fourth

largest in the world, is also affiliated to the
