Die donasies word bestuur deur die NGKerk Durbanville en word net vir dié doelgebruik.

A Durbanville ward councillor has ple-aded for residents to stop giving mo-ney to street children in the town cen-

tre.TheresaUys, councillor ofward 21,which

includes the Durbanville town centre, saidstreet children’s “highly damaging lifestyleis being sustained by hand outs given to thechildren by residents”.“The children return and continue with

their illegal activity, because our communi-ty rewards themwith food andmoney,”Uyssaid.She says the children are mostly school

children from Morningstar and Fisante-kraal who wander the streets after schooluntil about 17:00 on week days – some alsoduring school hours.“This has been reported to the headmas-

ters of the Trevor Manuel Primary Schooland Alpha Primary School.“What is very concerning is that adults

give the children money during schoolhours. Surely one must ask why the childis not at school?”Uys was responding to complaints about

the street children made by an anonymousbusinessman in Voortrekker Road.

Favourite hangouts“Their favorite spot seem to be Voortrek-

ker Road and the car park in front of theSpur and behind the town hall,” the busi-nessman said.“They also spend time between the vari-

ous car parks behind Absa and in front ofCheckers, but in fact they can be found allover Durbanville,” he complained.“These young children are making a real

nuisance of themselves pretending to be carguards. They hassle people, incorrectly tryto ‘assist’ motorists to park, beg for moneyfrom vehicle owners, shoppers and elderlyfolk and at times become quite aggressivein their approach.“They are often seen moving as a group

– surrounding and manhandling elderlyfolk, who seem to be their main target. Itwon’t be long before a pickpocket or ‘smashand grab’ happens with some elderly lady’shandbag.“They are not in the least interested in

looking after the safety of parked cars andcertainly arenot justified in earningany feefor looking after cars. These are youngchildren, aged around 10, who know no-thing about directing cars – let alone lookafter the security of any vehicle. Theyspend their time playing, smoking, brea-king down the branches of the trees in thegreenbelt park, scratching through refusebins, gambling between themselves withthe money received from begging, hangingaround in the street causing a potential se-rious accident and risk death by speedingvehicles, urinating in the alley betweenshops and defecating in the car park behind

the Spur,” he complained.“It is not food they want as we have seen

doggy bags donated by Spur customers en-ding up in refuse bins when the person isout of sight. Itwould appear that anymoneyearned is spent on cigarettes, because theyseem to have an endless supply,” he said.

Give donations“As longaswegive themmoney, theywill

be back and they will grow in numbers andtheir aggressiveness.“By giving themmoney we are ourselves

encouraging a lifestyle of laziness, unem-ployment, begging, vagrancy, and we arenot doing them any favours at all,” he said.Uys said one of the street children was

caught stealing a cell phone and anotherone stole a camera from a handbag at a res-taurant in Oxford Street.“To give responsibly is very difficult, but

important. By giving the giver feels goodabout themselves without questioning theconsequences of their donation.“I urge our community to rather give do-

nations toorganisations like theDurbanvil-le Children’s Home, the Dutch ReformedChurch in Durbanville or local schools.“Although street children are the respon-

sibility of province and the provincial soci-al worker, I have asked the City’s Law En-forcement officers to monitor the situationin Durbanville,” she said.“The local police has also expressed its

concern about the public giving hand outsto the children.”

Two German Shepherd dogs from Dur-banville are not only obedience cham-pions, but have also qualified to beco-

me tracker dog champions.Angie Brooke of Langeberg Ridge and her

dog, Quando, qualified on Saturday 29March in the working trials of the Walmerand Suburbs Kennel Club in Port Elizabeth.Sheila Wills from Durbanville and her dog,Bronte, also qualified on Sunday 30 Marchin the working trials of the Port ElizabethKennel Club.Both handlers are members of the Cape

Handlers Dog Club in Milnerton.The dogs were entered into the most seni-

or level of working trials, the Tracker DogIII level. The trial involves anumber of secti-

ons which all have to be passed in orderfor the dog to qualify for a certificate.In the first section theyhave to follow the

track of a person who has walked througha field three hours earlier and droppedthree articles on the track. After the threehours the dog, followed by the handler ona long line, must follow the track and findand indicate all three articles. There areupto 11 corners on the track.Thenext section involves the dog finding

a hidden article within a delineated areaof roughground. Thedogmust check everyquarter of the area, find the article and eit-her bark or indicate to the handler whereit is hidden.The third section consists of the dog fin-

ding, within four minutes, four small articlesabout the size of amatchboxwhich have beenhidden in another area of rough grassland.The articles have been held and scented bythe judge for one minute.There is also a send-away and redirection

section in which the dog must run out 50 mto a visible landmark. It can be a log, a bushor something similar. The dog must stopwhen commanded and then, when redirectedby the handler, must run either to the rightor to the left for another 20 m and stop when

commanded.The dog must also do a 10 minute down-

stay with the handler completely out ofsight, then a section of heelwork, where itmust stay close to the handler even if thehandler changes pace orwalks close to otherpeople, dogs or cars. The dog must also notbe alarmed by two gunshots and stay closeto the handlers.

The innocent pleading eyes of previouslyabused or neglected animals look up atyou, willing to give their hearts as

you step into the Uitsig Animal RescueCentre.

It is unthinkable that the some 500 rescuedanimals on these premisesmight be withouta home in three months time.

The organisation last week received no-tice to vacate the smallholding nearFisantekraal to make space for the Green-ville Garden City housing development.

It is a very real probability that these ani-mals could lose their lives if the organisa-tion loses its facilities. However, for the fer-vent, tough-as-nails animal lovers and pas-sionate founders and members of thisexceptional organisation, it’s not an option.

Massive mandate“Failure is not an option. It is a big worry

for us, but for the sake of the animalswe can-not afford to not succeed,” said foundingmember Denay Saunders, about the organi-sation’s quest to now find new land to homethe animals.

Her love and genuine concern for the wel-fare of animals is visible in the unselfishwork she, her 15 staff members and othervolunteers have put into the organisationsince its inception in 2009.

A former veterinarian assistant, it washer intention to provide abandoned and sur-rendered animals with a short-term alterna-tive to euthanasia.

Their mandate is gigantic: to rescue ne-glected, abandoned and abused animals inthe northern suburbs of Cape Town and tonurse them back to health, provide themwith a safe and loveable haven, to rehabili-tate them and to find them permanenthomes.

In fact, the centre is the only pro-life, pro-quality-of-life animal rescue haven withpremises in the northern suburbs. Thismeans they also house animals fromvariousother shelters and animal welfare organisa-tions such as the Lucky Lucy Foundation,Adopt-a-Pet and the Animal Rescue Team.

“We believe that all animals have a secondchance no matter how neglected or abusedthey were when we found them. We do notbelieve in euthanising animals andwill onlydo so in exceptional circumstanceswhere ananimal is either suffering or could not be re-habilitated. We believe in providing all ouranimals with quality of life, sufficient food,shelter and attention, until such timewe canre-home them with a suitable family,” saysDenay.

An unrealistic feat?“No. There is much hope. We have had

great success with our adoptions, while atthe same time we undertake sterilisationand animal care education programmes inunderprivileged areas and townships, to ad-

dress the problem at the core. Additionally,all the animals we rescue stay on at the cen-tre for an unlimited period of time,” shesays.

No hard feelingsAccording to Denay, they have no gripe

with the land owners, as they were awarefrom the start that the land was earmarkedfor development and their stay would onlybe temporary.

“Our landlords were very good and gener-ous to us over the years and we realise theimportance of housing. It’s just that it camedown on us rather suddenly and we nowhave to move very fast to raise the funds weneed to re-establish the centre,” she said.

The centre envisions purchasing theirown land, registering it in a trust and re-building their shelters on it for the exclusiveuse of the rescue centre.

“We have been working, for some timenow, on a future vision for a new largerworld class animal rescue centre from

which we can accomplish much more thaneven what we do now. We just had no ideathat we would have to do it so soon!”

“Weare solely dependent onpublic donorsand our own fundraising, but believe thatwith thehelp of the communitywe can reachor target in time,” she said, and adds:“Please everyone, we have only 90 days toraise what we need. The alternative is un-thinkable and will crush so many of us.”

Planning phaseCEO of Garden Cities JohnMatthews con-

firmed that theywere in theplanningphasesof phase 2 of the project, but they had giventhe farm manager of the Uitsig Farm appro-priate legal notice that they would only re-quire the land by the end of next year.

He said that the lease between the farmmanager and the centre stipulated threemonths but this notice period was not to hisknowledge envoked as yet.

“I am however happy to engage with thecentre in order to find a solution,” he said.

“We are already negotiating with theLucky Lucy Foundation who is also on theland as we acknowledge the existence of andthe need for the animal shelters.”

The organisation would need about R5million, of which they have raised R50 000to date.

TheDaniel andFriendsFundpresented trai-ning in cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) and choking first aid to parents andcaretakers on Saturday 15March at the Altadu Toit Center in Kuils River.

They were trained by Michelle van derMerwe of Mikki-bee Training, who offeredher training as a donation to the Daniel andFriends Fund to make it possible for morepeople to attend the course at a discountedprice.

About 80 volunteers from the Urban EdgeChurch in Durbanville gave up their Satur-day morning to assist the Won Life EarlyLearning Centre in Fisantekraal with itsannual sports day.As the Early Learning Centre is a pre-pri-

mary school for grade R’s, the sports activi-tieswerenot formal athletics events, but ra-ther fun and exciting games that the fiveand six-year-old children could enjoy.These events included a slip-and-slide,

sack races, egg and spoon races and the fa-vourite, a gladiator jumping castle.“The children thoroughly enjoyed them-

selves. Many of the children in Fisante-kraal do not get the opportunity to experi-ence jumping castles and slip-and-slides,”saidLindsayPietersen, aWonLife director.“We know that this sports day will be a

lasting memory for them. It’s important forchildren to have wonderful childhood me-mories, so we do everything that we can toensure they have memorable experienceswhile they are at our preschool,” she said.Not only the children of the Early Lear-

ning Centre enjoyed this event, it was alsoa perfect opportunity for the parents and fa-mily members to join in the fun.“The parents loved seeing their children

In Pierre Maritz se kantoor in Durbanvillekan hy nie vir geen oomblik sit nie. Hy be-gin sommer staan-staan te praat in die

Dis die vraagwat die plaaslike sanger, Lu-kas de Beer, en die vervaardiger, HelmutMeijer, gevra het toe hulle aan Lukas se de-buut- album begin werk het.Alhoewel hy al baie liedjies vir ander kun-

stenaars geskryf het, het hy eers onlangs syeie album, Storm op Jupiter, bekend gestel.“Dis ietswat al komvanmykinderdae af,”

sê Lukas van symusiek. Hy was elf of twaalftoe hy al in sy eerste orkes gespeel het.Lukas sê dat daar ’n klomp dinge in sy le-

we is wat saamgekom het, sodat hy die stapkon neem om sy eie musiek op te neem. Hyhet al baie van die materiaal op die albumklaar geskryf en hy’t homself afgevra:“Waarvoor wag ek?”.“Dis nie asof ’n ou jonger word nie en dis

nie asof die tyd meer raak nie,” spot hy.Toe Lukas en Helmut besluit het om die

album op te neem, was hul kriteria dat hullemusiek wou maak wat vir hulle mooi is, on-geag of dit op die radio gespeel sou word. Al-bei hou van die 80’s, asook rock-musiek, enLukas sê dat hulle ’n bietjie van ’n soft rock-benadering gehad het.

MusikaliteitToe Lukas en Helmut ontmoet het om oor

die album te gesels, wasHelmut toevallig dievorige aand by ’n Mike and the Mechanics-vertoning en die twee het besluit om te sienof hulle nie iets van die musikaliteit vandaardie era kan vasvang nie.Lukas was bietjie bekommerd dat die al-

bum te divers is, maar hy sê dieselfde skry-wer, musikante en vervaardiger maak datdie tien liedjies opdie oueinde togbymekaarpas.Hy sê die inspirasie vir sy liedjies komvan

bei sy ouers is ook musikante. Sy pa het ki-taar gespeel en syma het gesing en hulle het’n orkes gehad toe Lukas klein was. “Ek ont-hou ons het altyd in die huis musiek gehad,altyd.”Hy was net vyf jaar oud toe hy sy eerste

kitaar gekry het en op ses begin lesse kryhet, maar toe hy sy baskitaar gekry het, washy verlief. Dis nou rondom dié tyd dat hy syeerste orkes begin het. “Dit was vet pret,”sê hy.Wanneer hy nie sy eie musiek speel nie,

speel hy ander kunstenaars semusiek op dieradio as ontbytomroeper by Radio KaapseKansel. “Vir ’n musikant is dit ’n uitdagingom so vroeg wakker te word.”

MeestersHy is ook besig met sy meestersgraad in

bestuursafrigting en hy fokus spesifiek opmense in die kreatiewe bedryf.Hy het ook drie kinders wat hom besig

hou, terwyl sy vrou ’n dokter by ’n noodeen-heid is. Sy plan is vir eers om vir die volgen-de tydjie Storm op Jupiter in die land te be-mark. An addition to the 2014 World TriathlonSeries calendar was in November an-nounced by the International Triath-

lon Union (ITU).For the first time ever, a World Triathlon

Series event will take place on the Africancontinent with a race to be held at the V&AWaterfront in Cape Town from 26 to 27 April.

The Cape Town race will serve as the se-cond stop on an eight-city tour starting inAuckland from 5 to 6April.

Cape Town, alongwith Chicago, is one oftwo cities to debut onthe WTS calendar in2014.

The world’s top tri-athletes have confirmedtheir participation inthe Cape Town leg of theseries. With eight of thetop ten elite men on thestart list, spectators canexpect a tight, actionpacked race. Local heroRichard Murray (ran-ked 5th) will take on Ma-rioMola (ESP),whonar-rowly beat him by 18 se-conds in the World Cupseason opener in Mooloolaba last month, aswell as fellow Spaniard Javier Gomez whois number one on the WTS rankings. With15 and seven World Series wins under theirrespective belts, Brownlee brothers Alistairand Jonathan are the most successful eliteathletes in the history of the series and willbe looking to retain their position.

With the top three ladies on the WTS ran-kings, Jodie Stimpson (GBR), Non Stanford(GBR) and Anne Haug (GER) confirmed, theladies competition will rival the elite men’s

for action. Olympic silver medallist LisaNorden (SWE) will also be making her ITUWorld Series comeback in Cape Town afterthe 2012 Olympics. Along with Helen Jenk-ins (GBR), she’ll be looking to regain her for-mer ITU World Triathlon Series glory.

Theycomfortably defeated Durbanville HS on theway to lifting the trophy. Out of 13 games,the team boasts a record of 10 wins andjust three losses. a season best performance in the school’s history. To cap off a goodseason’s play, the Fairmont u14’s won theirleague final against DF Malan.
