n
Polisie-jaagtog op ho spoed agter
vermeende inbrekers aan, het verle-
de Woensdag tragies geindig toe die
patrolliewa met die motor van n man (73)
gebots het.
Charles Diers van Pinelands het weens sy
ernstige beserings gesterf.
toraat (Opod) ondersoek.
Volgens lt. Marchell Rhode van die Dur-
banville-polisie het die patrolliewa ver-
meende inbrekers in n Toyota Fortuner ag-
terna gesit.
Di voertuig is opgemerk by n huis inDen
Hume-straat in Kenridge, waar n poging tot
inbraak kort tevore plaasgevind het.
Volgens ooggetuies was die verkeerslig
Durbanville geneem.
Konst. Hanswentzel Joubert het sy linker-
skouer gebreek en ao. Basie Basson het drie
gebreekte ribbes opgedoen.
Basson is Maandagaand ontslaan en Jou-
bert sou moontlik gister ontslaan word.
n Patrolliewa van Kraaifontein-polisie
het die verdagte Toyota Fortuner in Lange-
bergweg agtervolg.
by n motorverhuringsfirma gehuur is.
daar polisiebeamptes daarby betrokke was
en n persoon oorlede is.
Dit is om onpartydigheid te verseker,
het hy ges.

O
wners who use their private dwell-
ings for other purposes than living in
them, should make very sure zoning
regulations are on their side.
This is the message from Johan van der
Merwe,Maycomember for energy, environ-
mental and spatial planning.
The City is aware that private residen-
tial properties are increasinglyused for var-
ious activities such as small churches or
places of worship, businesses and crches,
he says.
While these uses are welcomed, property
owners need to ensure that the use of their
property is in line with the zoning of the
premises and, where applicable, consent for
alternative uses must be obtained.
A property zoned Single Residential 1
allows for a dwelling to be constructed. It
also allows for additional uses such as home
occupation, a bed and breakfast establish-
ment (no more than six paying guests and
no more than three rooms being used for
guests) and home child care (a small crche
of up to six children), he says.
These additional uses are subject to cer-
tain limitations.
Owners of properties zoned for Single
Residential 1 purposes must apply for and
be granted a consent use or temporary de-
parture if they do not comply with the limi-
tations for additional uses or if they want
to operate aplace ofworship, small business
(such as a house shop), guest house or
crche (more than six children) or want to
build a second dwelling on the property.
The Municipal Planning by-law permits
the City to take a variety of actions in re-
spect of an unlawful land use, Van der Mer-
we says.
Legal action is the absolute last resort,
therefore, property owners are encouraged
to visit their local district planning office to
verify whether the current use of the prop-
erty complies with the zoning of the premis-
es and, if not, what process they need to fol-
low in order to complywith applicable legis-
lation or to avoid further action.
VComplaints relating to possible land use and build
ing contraventions can be submitted in writing to
the Citys property enforcement section at the local
planning district office for their investigation.

n
Gesin wie se vierjarige dogtertjie n
tweede kans op die lewe gekry het,
kom eersdaags na Brackenfell om n
spesiale getuienis te gee.
Die Du Toits, oorspronklik van Hope-
town, kombesoek afl by die Familia Chris-
tie-kerk in Proteahoogte om te vertel oor
hul dogtertjie, Cheara, se wonderbaarlike
herstel n twee leweroorplantings.
Di kindjie het ook mediese geskiedenis
gemaak deurdat n oorplanting van n nie-
verwante, lewende skenker vir die eerste
keer in die land suksesvol uitgevoer was.
Haar ouers glo dt is te danke aandie krag
van gebed.
Ons getuig waar ons kan. Ek het in die
hospitaal gesit toe Cheara op haar siekste
was en vir God ges: As U haar gesond
ri.
struktiewe geelsug gehad, vertel Juan-Ma-
ri.
vertel Juan-Mari. Cheara het toe op 10weke
haar eerste noodoperasie ondergaan, waar-
Cheara was gelys vir n le-
weroorplanting die enigste kuur vir di
siekte, vertel haar ma.
n Oorplanting is toe tydens n prosedure
van agt uur lank op 13 Desemeber 2013 ge-
doen met haar pa, Charl, as die skenker.
Maar Cheara se liggaampie het di lewer
verwerp. Sy het sieker geraak as ooit, s
Juan-Mari. TeenOktober laas jaarwasChe-
e-pos gestuur.
Haar man se neef se vrou het aangebied
om te toets as skenker. Ons
was baie bly, want daar was
min hoop vir onsmeisiekind.
Die Du Toits het hul egter
vasgeloop teen die landswette
n lewende leweroorplanting
vanaf n nie-verwante skenker
was toe nog nooit voorheen in
die land gedoen nie en die ge-
sondheidsdepartement het ge-
weier om toestemming te ver-
leen sodat di operasie kon
voortgaan. Ons was verby
moedeloos. Eindelik het Che-
ara toe wel op die teaterbed te
lande gekom by Wits se Do-
naldGordon-mediese sentrum
die enigste in die landwat le-
wende skenker-leweroorplan-
tings doen. Belangstellendes
kan die gesin en hul inspire-
rende boodskap ontmoet by

klink, vertel Janse gou.
enigeen begin gesels en alle mense gelyk be-
handel, s sy.
Soveel so, dat mense onlangs vir n renie
sover as Pretoria en Riversdal.
dem-padfiets. En oral langs die pad maak
Janse nuwe vriende.
jaar van diewerksvoorbereidingsfase by di
skool.
videospeletjies.
de jaar, voorlopig by n kerkperseel in N1
trum as n nie-winsgewende organisasie te
laat registreer.
Melinda Fouch van Autism Western Ca-
pe het die sentrum verwelkom. Dienste vir
volwassenes op die outistiese spektrum is
baie beperk inSuid-Afrika.Baie ouers enon-
derwysers vra dikwels die vraag: Waarheen
gaan hulle as hulle 18 jaar oud word?
Ons kry by Autism Western Cape dik-
wels oproepe vanbekommerde ouerswat be-

so lekker dat haar troeteldier

in stand kon hou nie.
by die tuin sal hou.

boom n bietjie kompos gaan strooi.

A
fter a long standstill on the Pampoen-
kraal heritage project in Voortrekker
Road inDurbanville, a contractor has
finally been appointed to implement the
second and final phase of the project.
The completion of the main square in-
cludes the resurfacing of the square, plant-
ing of trees, implementation of a water fea-
ture, erecting a public art installation, con-
structing an amphitheatre and installing
public lighting. The total cost of this phase
is R9,5 million (excluding VAT).
The City of Cape Town stated in July,
after the completion of the first phase, that
the final phase would have started within
the following months.
According to Johan van derMerwe, may-
oral committee member for energy, envi-
ronmental and spatial planning of the City,
a delay was caused by internal processes.
Internal processes within the City dic-
tate adherence to the requirement of statu-
tory procedures outlined in the Municipal
Finance Management Act to ensure due
consideration for all tenderingparties. This
consideration is, at times, delayed by the
strict observance of legislated guidelines.
VanderMerwe said the contract has been
awarded to the successful contractor.
However, this appointment is subject to
amandatory 21-day appeal period. Once the
appeal period has been completed, a final
appointment will be made.
The construction commencement date
is dependent onwhen the final appointment
is made, he said.
According to Van der Merwe the damage
to the cratch (voerkrip) in April by a con-
struction vehicle was only superficial and
did not warrant any repairs at that stage.
All the heritage related elements on site
will receive further attention during the
next phase of theupgrade, he said, explain-
ing why the contractor was not instructed
to repair the damage to the cratch.
On criticism that the paving in the first
phase was untidy, he said the work was un-
dertaken by Transport for Cape Town, us-
ing one of their specialised paving contrac-
tors.
The work was done by a specialist pav-
ing contractor known for the exceptional
quality of work they deliver.
In addition to this, the City had a team
of consulting engineers that supervised the
construction process to further ensure that
theworkdeliveredmet the required specifi-
cations.
As is standard practice for a project of
this nature, soft landscaping for the entire
site will be completed as a final step during
the next phase to avoid damage to trees dur-
ing construction.
Spaces in the paving have therefore
been left open on purpose for trees and this
might have created the impression of unfin-
ished or inadequate paving work, he said.

SLICE OF LIFE
Dont forget
the why of
Movember
Its that time of year when men pack
away their razors and start growing
facial hair, that is.
And while grooming your moustache to
be the best it can be is the aim for the
this month, its vital to remember the
reason behind the movement.
The simple truth is that its not a
competition to see who has the biggest
beard. The point of Movember, now an
international annual movement, is to
create awareness of mens health during
the month of November.
Its initial aim was to get men talking
about prostate cancer, but the movement
has now grown to encompass testicular
cancer, mental health and physical
inactivity.
This year men are being encouraged to
get moving for the entire month to tackle
the latter. So, round up your friends and
enjoy a friendly game of sport.
One in every 23 South African men will
develop prostate cancer in their lifetime,
while testicular cancer remains the most
common cancer in men. Globally as
many as 510 000 men die from suicide
each year and over three million deaths
every year can be attributed to insuffi-
cient physical activity.
Growing impressive facial hair is not
enough its time to tell your friends
why. Instead of just admiring each
others hair growth, its time to deal with
the big issues: Share your personal
experiences of stress, anxiety and depres-
sion, and encourage each other to get
regular medical check-ups.

MICHELLE LINNERT

B
ellville learner Lohann Roe-
lofse recently completed his
coast to coast walk for wheel-
chairs in aid of the Chaeli cam-
paign.
His proud dad, Pierre, wrote to
TygerBurger to report on Lohanns
bigwalk fromStruisbaai toBigBay.
Whatmakes his sons effort so ex-
traordinary, is the fact that Lohann
was born with extra and webbed
toes and fingers.
Some of the extra digits were sur-
gically removed soon after birth up
until he was two years old, with
many more operations following
until Lohann was 10.
The Grade 12 learner is a natural
leader and as such Lohann is cur-
rently deputy head boy at Stellen-
berg High School.
He often still uses crutches and a
wheelchair.
Because Lohann realised howdif-
ficult life was for wheelchair-bound
people, he wanted to make some
sort of a difference and the idea of
the walk started taking form.
Pierre tells: The walk was com-
pleted without any incidents and
took Lohann from Struisbaai
through Bredasdorp, Napier, Cale-
don, Franschhoek, Klapmuts, Dur-
banville, Stellenberg and finallyBig
Bay in Blouberg.
Lohann completed the gruelling
walk of 250 km in just seven days,
Pierre said.
The shortest distance he com-
pleted in one day,was 32 kmand the
longest, 44 km. At one stage it was
very difficult for him and he had to
usehis crutches and evenhiswheel-
chair, Pierre said.
This caused blisters on his hands,
but he never gave up.
Pierre said during the last two
days of the walk, which took place
earlier this year, Lohannwas great-
ly supported by friends and family
who walked parts of the distance
with him.
On the last day of his walk Lo-
hanns route went past his school.
There he had an overwhelming re-
ception from learners and person-
nel, Pierre said.
There was even a placard read-
ing Marryme, Lohann! This recep-
tion greatly motivated him.
Lohann managed to gather
R40 000 for the Chaeli campaign and
another R8 800 towards his schools
charitable fund.
ChaelismomandCEOof theCha-
eli campaign, Zelda Mycroft, had
the following to say: Children need
to believe in their own abilities so
that they can contribute to their
community.
The money will be used towards
the campaigns early childhood de-
velopment programmes.
The Chaeli campaign has also
made Lohann a Friend of the Chaeli
campaign, which is a select group of
individuals who go above and be-
yond to assist and support their or-
ganisation, Zelda added.
Pierre once more thanked the en-
tire community who so generously
opened their hearts to Lohanns ef-
fort and the campaign.
Here Lohann walks past his own school on his way to Bloubergstrand. His dad,
Pierre, jokingly said Lohann was even propositioned for marriage during his
wonderful receptioninpassing at the school.

A tea party is being hosted in Durbanville
onSaturday 7Novemberby the charity or-
ganisation Rachels Wishes to raise mon-
ey for a newwheelchair for a severely dis-
abled teenager.
The 13-year-old Nothando Mavuso be-
came paralysed, as well as deaf, mute and
blind due to a disease she contracted at a
younger age. She lives in Swaziland, but
is the daughter of the gardener of Chris-
tine Adcock from Vygeboom in Durban-
ville.
She contracted a disease at the age of
nine months, which has left her with se-
vere curvatureof the spine, aswell asdeaf,
mute and blind. She deserves an opportu-
nity. We can make our tea party a success
to buy her the wheelchair, making her
dreams come true, says Adcock.
The charity organisation Rachels
Wishes was a birthday gift to Adcock
from her son when she and her husband
returned to South Africa in 2012.
She started a support group after their
daughter, Rachel, died in March 1993 at
the age of three.
The effect on a family of losing a child,
nomatter how close or strong, is devastat-
ing and statistics show not many marria-
ges or families make it through the
months and years that follow.
Our family suffered, each one pulling
in a different direction and not together.
We got through it by turning some-
thing so negative into something positive.
After tackling andovercomingmyown
grief, Rachels memory inspired me to
form a support group called Women for
women, which I ran frommy house, she
says.
When I returned to the UK in 2000 the
desire to continue remained strong inside
me. Iwent on toorganise functions raising
money for Great Ormond Street Hospital,
known for their work in helping chil-
dren.
Adcock and her husband returned to
South Africa in March 2012.
Once again I realised the work had to
continue. Now it can in a beautiful land
where there are many children that need
a chance in life for so many reasons.
Our aim is to help as many children as
we can and encourage others to do the
same through giving, she says.
The tea is presented at 48 Hebron Street
in Durbanville from 14:00 to 17:00. Tickets
are R45 for adults and R20 for children.
Tea, coffee and sumptuous cakes and
biscuits will be served.
It also includes childrens entertain-

roast the beans on a

imports coffee from
all around the world.
The house blend
consists of seven dif-
ferent coffee beans
three from Africa
and four from South
America.
Carluccis Bistro
serves single origin
bean coffee such as
the 100% Ethiopean
Sidamo, 100% organ-
ic Nicaragua, a
South American cof-
fee, and also a 100%
Indian coffee named
Indian Monsoon. These coffee berries are
not picked like ordinary coffee, but left to
drop and fermented, and only then dried
and roasted.
According to him, the secret of excellent
coffee lies in consistency the correct way
of making the foam to a silky smooth layer-
ed treat.
The trick is in the top. It takes two to
three years of practise to reach consisten-
cy, he smiles knowingly.
Payze, who was born in Zimbabwe, liter-
ally grew up in the hotel industry as his fa-
ther owned a hotel in Johannesburg.
The menu at Carluccis offers several
breakfast options, including eggs benedict,
authentic boiled bagels and freshly baked
croissants. They have three bakers baking

the idea was to create a space where sports

opened its doors at Meerendal recently to
