Dié kris-tal-koepelligte laat sonlig deur en verlig diekelder selfs meer effektief as wat elektrieseligte dit doen.Die afskakeling van kelderligte op ’n deur-

lopende basis is ook tevore al ingestel omelektrisiteit te bespaar.

Volgens Moore hoop hulle om tot R7 000per maand aan krag te spaar met die nuwekristal-koepelligte.Anderkragbesparende inisiatiewe sluit in

die voortdurende beheer om die tempera-tuur van die verkoelingstenk konstant tehou, asook die outomatiese stel van kraneop tenks.Weens die kelder se eko-vriendelike bena-

dering – ookwat betref diewegdoenmet dop-pe en afvalwater – is ISO 14001-akkreditasiereeds in 2004 aan die kelder toegeken.VolgensMoore probeer hulle voortdurend

hierop verbeter en met nuwe besparendeinisiatiewe vorendag te kom.Dié kelder was een van die eerste in die

Wes-Kaap om sy afvalwater te herwin.

The open space in Voortrekker Road in Dur-banville – also known as the historical Pam-poenkraal outspan – was officially handedover to contractors lastThursday toundergoa R10 million upgrade.

The historical area is situated betweenVoortrekker Street, Main Road, WellingtonRoad and Church Street in Durbanville.

This site accommodates the town hall andplayed an important role in the developmentof Durbanville.

TheresaUys,ward 21 councillor, who han-ded the site over, said the City identified erf699 and surrounds as an opportunity for the

creation of a dignified space for the publicand a strategic gateway to the DurbanvilleCBD.

“A careful process of planning and publicparticipation has been followed. The designhas been informed by input from three pu-blic meetings, as well as targeted stakehol-der discussions.”

Work on Voortrekker Road will commen-ce thismonth and continue for approximate-ly fivemonths. This phase entails the replac-ment of paving on both sides of VoortrekkerRoad; paving the road surface; installationof and replacing of services and installationof tree planters and irrigation.

“All possible attempts will be made by thecontractor to limit disruptionduring this pe-

riod,” Uys said.The second phase is limited to the bounda-

ries of the site and will commence in Julyand continue for approximately a year.

Christo Kannenberg, PR councillor invol-ved in the project with Uys, said the area’srich history makes this project special.

“Pampoenkraal had been used as an out-span in the time of the East India Company(EIC) and the tracks of the ox wagons aresymbolically used in the design.

“Even the springwater, which had beenused to quench the thirst of the animals, hasbeen used as an element in the design.

“It is envisaged that the new square willserve as spark for future redevelopmentaround the square,” Kannenberg said.

Daar is toe vasgestel die bakkie se lisen-sie het in 2012 reeds verval. Die bestuurderis beboet.

Morné Marais (28), who also works as ahealth and safety advisor, said he wants tomake a bigger difference, to be an inspirati-on and role model.

He started an anti-bullying campaign inSeptember last year andhas already spokenabout bullying at eight different schoolsand universities in three provinces.

He was the only finalist from the WesternCape to make it to the top.

“I want to thank each and everyone fortheir amazing support, kind words, phonecalls, messages and posts – it truly meansso much. I could not have done this withoutall of you.

“I am truly grateful. It was a year of hardwork and dedication, with great memoriesand people. But it does not end here, it isonly the beginning,” he said.

He plans to register his anti-bullyingcampaign as annon-profit organisation andwork full force to create awareness on thistopic and to complete his book on bullyingand launch it as soon as possible.

Previous titles he has won include Mr Wi-nelands, Mr Perfect and Mr WinelandsSummerbody in 2013. He was also in the topthree of the Men’s Health Cover Search2013.

The Vissershok Road in Durbanville will bepartially closed when the 99er cycle tourand MTB challenge takes place this Satur-day 7 February from 07:00 to 13:00.

The road will be closed from the N7 to theMeerendal wine estate turn off. The roadclosure will be from the N7 towards Dur-banville only.

This will allow cyclists to safely negotiateVissershok Road for the last stretch to thefinish on Odendaal Road in Aurora.

Tygerberg Road (M13) will serve as alter-native route into Durbanville.

Motorists can expect delays on St John’sRoad, Vissershok Road, Main Road andWellington Road in Durbanville from 06:00until 08:00. This year, live entertainment,fun rides for children and food stalls will

provide fun for the whole family. The newkiddies ride for under seven-year-olds willtake place on the track going around the in-side circle of the Durbanville race course.

Trees4Schools are not only planting treesand educating learners on the importance oftrees for the environment, they are also help-ing plant sustainable vegetable gardens.

To date 2 600 trees and 160 veggie gardenshave been planted – all made possiblethrough fund-raising initiatives like the oneby Stodels Nurseries.

Late last year Stodels Nurseries managingdirector Nick Stodel handed a cheque for R32232 to Trees4Schools for their projects.

Trees4Schools is a local initiative whichstarted off planting trees at schools.

According to Suzi Nortje of Trees4Schools,they realised that helping teachers feedlearners was just as important, and the vegg-ie planting took off.

Stodels raised the money over six monthsby donating R2 from each sale from a widerange of promotional plants.

Suzi said the donation will make a consid-erable difference to their project.

Nick said they regularly receive requests

fromvarious schools and charities asking forassistance.

“By partneringwith Trees4Schools, we areable tomake sure theprojects are sustainableand the best use of the money is made.

“This means monthly check ups on pro-jects to ensure the trees and vegetables arebeing maintained. The fact thatTrees4Schools also feeds 1500 children dailyis absolutely wonderful.”

Part of the Trees4Schools ethos is sustaina-bility. “We understand the only way theseprojects are going to be successful is if wefollow-up and ensure on-going educationhappens with the children,” Suzi said.

Nick said they are excited aboutTrees4Schools plan to create a commercialgarden to obtain income so that more treesand vegetables can be planted.

drive and it has given her a new lease on life,says Terry Milne from Fish Hoek. “Shecould not be here today, because she is sofrail, she’ll get blown over by the wind.”Terry spoke toTygerBurger at the celebra-

tion of 67 Blankets for Madiba’s first birth-day in the Company Gardens on 27 January.Since the launch of the cause in Johannes-burg last year, it has gained support fromacross theworld andhas over 2 000Facebook

members who call themselves Knitwits, andseveral groups in Cape Town who regularlymeet to make blankets for the poor.Youdonot need to be awoman to be aKnit-

wit. Johan Beetge from Plattekloof says hebecame so attached to the crocheted blankethe worked on for months last year, he sleptunder it the night before he donated it to thecause.“My husband took up looming and he

made an enormous blanket. He is a perfec-tionist and has become proficient in thequalities of wool, so 67 Blankets has becomea whole industry in our household,” saysTerry Milne.Terry is also involved with a group of

women in Masiphumelele in Kommetjiewho knit squares, and she teaches childrenat primary schools to loom and knit, as partof their life skills curriculum.These squaresare then sewn together by volunteers tomake blankets.The original 67 Blankets’ aimwas to make

67 blankets to hand over to charity on Man-delaDay in 2014. They exceeded that numberby hundreds.Now they are taking the challenge to the

next level, because, saysBryoniDawson, theCape Town ambassador, people will alwaysneed blankets.“We are on deadline. We need 21 000 blan-

kets from all around South Africa to placeat the feet of Madiba’s statue at the UnionBuildings on 21 April, to celebrate our 21years of democracy,” says Carolyn Steyn,the driving force behind the group.“Even inmates in Zonderwater and Diep-

sloot prisons are knitting,” says Bryoni.She says this drive has grown into a huge

outpouring of goodwill.“We are a group of six women who get to-

gether twice a month to consolidate, bringdonations, share out and knit. We socialiseand talk about other projectswewant to do,”says Cathy Dippnall.

“Most of the women in our group did notknow each other before 67 Blankets was es-tablished and now we have become closefriends.“There are a lot of very enthusiastic peo-

ple. There are groups across all the suburbswho meet every week, get sponsorship anddeliver.”Charmaine Damstra from Plumstead is

working on her eighth blanket this year.“Our group meet every last Wednesday of

the month from 19:00 to late, or until all thechampagne is finished. We get very thirsty,

it’s hard work you know,” she says with awink.“This project is like a bug that bit us and

we cannot get rid of it,” says Florence Reddyfrom Grassy Park.“Housework and cooking has become sec-

Music should move listeners and up-lift the spirit.

This is the opinion of local dou-ble and electric bass player and composerBenjamin Jephta, who aims to do exactlythat with the Benjamin Jephta Quintet‘sdebut album, Homecoming.

Benjamin recorded the 12-track albumat Sumo Sound Studios in Johannesburg,where he now lives, but says he tried tohold on to stories from “home”, which forhim is Mandalay in Mitchell’s Plain,where he grew up.

ReconnectionAlthough he’s only 22, Benjamin has al-

ready shared the stage with big namessuch as Alvin Dyers, Jimmy Dludlu, Cam-illo Lombard, Simphiwe Dana, MelanieScholtz and Mi Casa, but Homecoming isa reconnection with why he chose to be amusician in the first place.

After completing his school career atMuizenberg High School, Benjaminmoved on to study Jazz at the South Afri-can College of Music at the University ofCape Town.

InspirationHe explains that musicians are often

taught about musical concepts and genrealong with what’s “trendy”. For him thismeant taking on whatever current genrewas considered “hip” and imitating themusicians he looked up to, but in the proc-ess, Benjamin sayshe lost track of the spir-it of his ownmusic and the essence ofwhatfirst inspired him to play.Homecoming was born out of the idea

that Benjamin felt he had something to

“say” musically.“I also felt that what I was doing was

unique and that it had to be documented,and an album is a greatway of doing that,”he says.

In order to capture the spark that madehim fall in love with music, Benjaminwanted to explore his own history and in-corporate it into the sound of the album.

“Having been raised on the Cape Flats

in Mitchell’s Plain and coming throughthe church, I want to give the listener amusical biography of my life by using theharmonies and melodies associated withthat upbringing.”

Home suburbIn fact, one of his favourite songs on the

album isOne for the Plein, which he wrotefor his home suburb. “The band always en-joys playing this live, because it has theability to go anywhere.”

The band Benjamin is referring to in-cludesKyleShepherd (2014StandardBankYoung Artist Award winner) on piano,SpheleloMazibuko on drums,MarcusWy-att on trumpet and Sisonke Xonti on sax.

Another favourite is Hymn for Ada, asongBenjaminwrote forAdaLoff fromhislocal church who passed away from can-cer. He says the song celebrates her life,and like One for the Plein, keeps develop-ing.

Simple and lyricalUltimately, Benjamin says, the composi-

tions on Homecoming are “quite simpleand lyrical”.

“For me the beauty lies in the way eachmusician interpreted the music, allowingit to speak into your spirit.”

While he’s currently promoting the al-bum, Benjamin hopes to play more showswith the quintet to develop the band’ssound as a collective and of course, keepwriting new music.Homecomingwill be available atAfrican

The substitution entry process* The withdrawing runner must log in-

to the online system and click the “substi-tute” button. A voucher number will bedisplayed and an email containing thisvoucher number will be sent.

* This voucher number and your racenumber must be forwarded to the newrunner who intends to take your entry.

* The withdrawing runner ONLY gives

Hennie Bosman has made many special appearances in Japan during major tournaments.

Fifty years ago, when Hennie Bosmanattended his first karate class he hadno idea what a remarkable impact this

ancient martial art would have on his life.The first evening he walked into the dojo

where everyone was fighting and shouting,retains its freshness in his memory.

In 1975 he opened his first dojo in LoopStreet, Cape Town while still in the SA Po-lice Service, and in 1978, after resigningfrom the police, he opened dojos in Durban-ville, Brackenfell, Kuils River andWelgemoed.

Bosman, who is the chairman of Kyok-ushin-kan Africa and owner of theWelgemoed Kyokushin-kan dojo with 38branches in the northern suburbs, livesand breathes karate.

Being the African chairman is not aneasy job. He has over 30 000 karateka in 10countries under his guidance. Poverty,lack of training facilities, funds and equip-ment, as well as challenges in respect oftravelling, make things very difficult.

Celebrations“We have big things planned for this

year to celebrate my 50 years of involve-ment in karate. We are going to have an in-ternational tournament, an internationalcamp, a gala dinner and host a golf day.Kancho Royama, our international chair-man, will visit South Africa in May to at-tend the international camp in Stellen-bosch and an international tournament.

“I have met so many remarkable peoplein life and whether they are still doing ka-rate or not, I invite everyone to get in touchand be part of the celebrations with me andmy family, as well as my students.

“I calculated that I must have taughtabout 15 000 students during the 40 yearsof teaching in the northern suburbs. It willbe so good to see people that I shared a lotof time with on the dojo floor,” said Bos-

man.It was his mother who sent him to karate

classes. “She wanted me to learn how to de-fend myself as I was bullied at school. Thatdecision set the tone for the rest of my life.”

He has represented South Africa in tradi-tional karate, kickboxing and Kyokushin.

“It was difficult times as we had to sneakinto overseas countries and sometimestake part in secret. I also represented Alge-ria and Botswana in Japan as South Africawas not allowed to compete. In Dublin, Ire-land we had a tournament in a snookerroom in a hotel,” recalls Bosman.

One of his highlights were when he wonthe world senior karate championships inOsaka, Japan in 2001. “I was so proud!”

Movie stars“Karate has opened so many doors for

me. I’ve played in numerous movies locallyand internationally, working with starslike Clint Eastwood, Wesley Snipes, MattDamon and Morgan Freeman to name afew. In March this year, the film Momen-tumwill be released, where I had the privi-lege to torture the James Bond girl, OlgaKurylenko. Unfortunately I mostly have

the part of the bad guy. I have also travelledextensively and seen a lot of this beautifulplanet.”

Bosman has also worked with the othersportsmen including the Sharks rugbyteam where he assist them with new ideason tackling and defence.

“I also had the honour of working withthe Springboks for one session in CapeTown under Peter De Villiers and assistedthe Springboks Sevens under Paul Treu.”

Bosman has always had the interests ofhis karateka at heart and at any given timehas students in Japan on a training course.

Romano Mento and Matthys Laubscherare currently undergoing an intense three-year training course and when they returnnext year, will share their knowledge withthe junior students.

Big plansShihan Hennie has big plans for his jun-

ior karateka this year. He invited hisfriend Sensei Chinone from Japan, whowill visit the Welgemoed dojo in Februaryto help prepare the karateka for the upcom-ing provincial and national champion-ships.

Bosman will also attend the annual in-structors’ camp in Japan from 6-8 March.The top instructors in the world meet hereto further their knowledge.

“I have dedicated my life to karate andit gives me great satisfaction see the talentthe youngsters show in class. It gives mea sense of relief to see that the future of ka-rate is alive and well,” said Bosman.

Kyokushin now has separate recogni-tion from traditional karate at Sascoc andhe is the representative for Africa in theKyokushin World Union. They are in theprocess of including Kyokushin in the 2024Olympic Games.

Former Springbokhooker JamesDalton,never one to stand back on the field, isnow a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu student and

graded for his purple belt on Saturday.Dalton, who moved from Pretoria to Con-

stantia last year, joined REPS Fitness underRico Hattingh in Bellville.“I started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Pretoria

back in 2008. I love the sport and askedaroundwhere I can join. RicoHattingh camehighly recommended.“In Pretoria the one school focused a lot

on theory and the other one on technique.On my first night with Rico I tapped aboutfive times and left with my eyes the size ofsaucers.“The skill sets that Rico make available to

the guys are of such a high level that eitheryou learn bloody quickly or you tap quickly.Rico is a role model in the sport,” said Dal-ton.

Hattingh said Dalton is a classic exampleof a true sportsman in that he thinks and vi-sualises what needs to be done before clas-ses, and what was done afterwards.“I can see that he really becomes better

with each and every class. Mentally he is ve-ry strong. He toldme the other day that aftera class he thinks about how he can improve.“If you approach it like he does, you have

a distinct advantage. And for me, it is an ho-nour to have a former Springbok in the gym.You will have to go far to meet a friendlierand humbler man,” said Hattingh.Dalton trains three times a week and is ai-

ming for the black belt.“I want to remain a part of a culture and

tradition ofmartial artswhichhas deliveredmany legendary athletes. I mainly do this tomaintain my health and competitive edgeand to accomplish success at something thatis totally new to me. Hopefully I will not be80 by the time I get my black belt,” chuckledDalton.
