    VERVOLG VAN BLADSY 1

Voorts dui die brief aan dat die

    StadKaapstad n openbare deelna-

    meproses moes onderneem, maar

    daarvanwasdaar geen sprakenie.

    Slegs 13 direk aangrensende bure

is per bogenoemde brief van die

    planne inkennis gestel, hoewel in-

woners meen dat die toename in

    verkeer n verreikende impak op

    die hele buurt sal h.

    Die inwoners is ook ontsteld

daaroor dat meeste van hulle n

week of korter voor die sluitings-

    datum van besware op Maandag

20 Junie eers hul briewe ontvang

    het.

    Volgens die terreinontwikke-

    lingsplan sal die grondverdieping

2 050 m beslaan en die eerste ver-

    dieping 307 m.

    Voorsiening sal gemaak word

    vir 73 bykomende parkeerplekke,

    waarvan 2 vir gestremdes sal

    wees. Tesame met die bestaande

    115 parkeerplekke van die kerk,

sal daar dus n totaal van 188 par-

    keerplekke wees.

    Volgens die terreinontwikke-

    lingsplan sal n verkeersirkel aan-

gebringword by die hoek van Pro-

tea- en Bolandweg om die verkeer

    te reguleer.

    In n verkeersimpakstudie is

    inwoners was.

The R487 million project by the Depart-

ment of Transport and Public Works to

upgrade nine kilometres of the N1 be-

tween Plattekloof Road and the Old Oak

interchange will disrupt traffic for the

    next few weeks.

The project is to be completed in Feb-

    ruary 2019.

In a statement issued by the depart-

ment, every effort will be made to mini-

    mise traffic disruption.

This part of the freeway carries about

120 000 vehicles every day. The addition

of a third lane in both directions will sig-

    nificantly reduce traffic congestion on

one of Cape Towns busiest roads.

    Shoulder closures for bridge rehabili-

tation work at the Plattekloof intersec-

tion, N1 outbound, will be between 08:00

to 15:00 daily. Lane closures for the in-

stallation of a freeway management sys-

tem and national long distance service

route between the Durban Road and Old

Oak intersections will also be closed for

    the same period.

There will be minor operations on the

side of the road daily between 08:00 and

    17:00

    Shoulder closures for bridge rehabili-

tation work at the Plattekloof intersec-

tion N1 inbound, will be between 09:00

and 17:00 and minor operations on the

side of the road between 08:00 and 17:00.

At Jip de Jager Road shoulder closures

will occur on both the on and off ramps.

    he Kendal Road Neighbourhood

Watch (KNW) in Eversdal is in the

    process of implementing the first

phase of their license plate recognition

    (LPR) camera project.

    Residents received letters about the

high-level introduction to the KNW camera

project. The first phase entails four camera

points at the main entry routes to the KNW

area with one camera already operational.

    Plans to expand the

    camera network are

    on the cards and we

    will keep residents in-

    formed. The place-

    ment of the cameras

    will be done based on

    the streets/locations

    where the financial

    contributions came

    from, so residents can

rest assured that we will do our best to

spend theirmoney as close to home as pos-

    sible, says Jacques Joubert, camera

    project coordinator for KNW.

    LPR camera feeds will automatically

match number plates read against a data-

base of known flagged vehicles. This means

that unknown or suspicious cars travelling

in and out of the monitored area would be

screened and if a match is found, it will be

    reported to law enforcement agencies.

Camera systems are another layer of se-

Help bring hope to farm school

    A

    struggling primary farm school out-

side Durbanville has been chosen as

    beneficiary ofActingHope, anon-prof-

it organisation founded in 2012, that recently

took over the coordination of charity work

    at the school.

TheAttie vanWyk Primary School is situ-

ated on the Klein Phisantekraal farm on

Koeberg Road and has 276 children.

But with only four toilets available, the

school needs a lot of help.

According to Ingrid Burger, who started

Acting Hope, this first Hope Centre was

started in June at the farm school to coordi-

nate support to the teachers and learners.

The aim is to give the learners and their

parents, all from surrounding farms, vari-

ous opportunities to help empower and sup-

port them throughout their primary school

    years.

The focus is on three main areas: the ter-

rain, buildings as well as curriculum sup-

    port, Burger says.

Burger, a teacher at Gene Louw Primary

School, foundedActingHope in 2012 as a com-

munity project for the Mrs United Nations

South Africa competition. She was crowned

as Mrs United Nations South Africa 2014.

Acting Hope will be implementing their

Hope Skills drama programme from next

term to support the children who are coping

with various challenges while growing up in

    their community.

Besides this, various other projects are

supported by Acting Hope which will be im-

plemented at the school to offer learners

    more opportunities.

    Children are also encour-

aged to discover their own tal-

    ents, with our support and

    mentorship, and implement

    their own smaller projects to

    benefit the learners at Attie

    van Wyk.

    When I started my involve-

    ment atAttie vanWyk,mybig-

gest wish was to take these

    children on their first outdoor

    camp, says Burger.

    This she managed to orga-

nise with the support of Jeug-

trust. The Grade 6 and 7

    learners attended their first

camp at Bains Kloof in Febru-

    ary this year.

    The Durbanville-Bergsig

    DutchReformedChurch, Gene

    Louw Primary School, Neo-

    Spektrum and Acting Hope, as

well as the owner of the farm

on which the school is built,

Erhard Louw, have for a num-

ber of years all contributed to

    the school in variousways, she

    says.

    They recently unanimous-

    ly appointed Acting Hope as

    the facilitator and mediator

between all contributing parties and the

school to ensure the school receives maxi-

mum benefit and that there are no duplica-

    tions, Burger says.

    The Bergsig-Durbanville Dutch Re-

    formed Church provides spiritual interac-

tion with the children and provides winter

garments such as knitted scarves, hats and

blankets for all the children in the school.

The church has also raised R25 000 to do-

nate towards the schools new ablution

    block.

Gene Louw Primary School operates a

weekly soup kitchen at the school to pro-

vide food in addition to that provided by the

    school feeding scheme.

They are also always ready to help

    whereneeded fromaddressing issues such

as themaintenance of the toilets to contrib-

uting food for the Bains Kloof camp earlier

    this year, Burger says.

A few months ago Neo-Spektrum imple-

mented a reading therapy programme and

reorganised the school library. They re-

corded all available books, obtained donors

who contributed new school benches and

recently managed to get the netball court

    resurfaced.

    The quotations that Neo-Spektrum re-

ceived to fix the netball court varied be-

    tween R60 000 and R90 000. However, Am-

    andla Construction eventually sponsored

the renovations, and on Thursday 2 June

this was celebrated with their first sports

day in years against Vissershok Primary.

The painting of the courts, as well as two

new goal posts, were sponsored by Keith

Crowley, while the shortfall of paint was

    sponsored by Amandla Construction and

    Bergsig Dutch Reformed Church respective-

ly a true example of working together,

    Burger says.

Neo-Spektrum is prepared to sponsor a

basketball goal post and balls to give the

boys from the school a sports opportunity on

    the new court as well.

There is a greater need for a sports field

at the school, since the children have no op-

portunity to develop their sporting talents.

We are hoping to involve a company in

the creation of our first sports field at Attie

vanWyk Primary as well as coaches to train

    the children.

    Unfortunately after-school activities face

    other challenges, such as transportation.

Furthermore the school needs two extra

classrooms aswell as a goodworkable kitch-

    en and bathrooms, Burger says.

They also have a need for water tanks to

support the kitchen and vegetable garden as

well as an upgraded sewerage system, she

    says.

Acting Hope strives to involve companies

and individuals who would like to support

the five-year plan of uplifting the school to

become a healthy, exciting and sustainable

    environment for the children attending,

    Burger says.

V Contact Ingrid Burger with any enquiries about in

volvement by email to [email protected].

Cara Wiese, a Hope Pageant finalist, handed over blankets and

beanies as part of her project Knit for a Cause. Here with her

and Ingrid Burger (right), founder of Acting Hope, is Justine

Eiman, a Grade 1 learner, who received a blanket. To date Cara

has managed to distribute more than 1000 blankets and

beanies. She asks people to donate money to buy wool,

donate wool or their time to help her knit. Visit Knit for a

Cause on Facebook for more information.

Andr Davids enjoys reading a book in the new library. Behind him Maria Loubser, a volunteer, is

assisting Cleo Williams with reading. At the far back are Ellen Andrag and Anesteishia Williams,

    also reading.

    DESIRE RORKE

    @dezzierorke

As a young woman in your twenties your

    expectations ofmarriage are very unrealis-

tic. Andwhen those expectations fail us, de-

pression is often a result, says well-known

    local gospel singer Crystal Swanson.

    A book authored by award

    winning journalist Sisanda

    Nkoala, telling the story be-

    hind Swansons career, was

released on 1 April at a

    packed venue at Centre for

    the Book in Cape Town.

    The official book tour

    starts on Saturday 2 July,

with its first stop being the

    Kraaifontein library hall,

    where a book signing will

    take place between 13:30 and

    16:30.

    The book Shepherded: A

    Womans Triumph through

    Depression and Divorce, is

    based on theverywell known

    Psalm 23 and focuses on

    Swansons personal journey

    through depression and divorce, forgive-

ness and healing and the birth of her sing-

ing career, which flowed from this.

It is not a sombre book and the focus is

not on suffering hardship, but on overcom-

ing it. Many Christians are faced with de-

pression at some time in their lives a topic

that is often a taboo in churches. But its

very real and needs to be treated seriously,

as I discovered after my marriage fell

    apart, she says.

Her approach to the disease was holistic.

It was a combination ofmedication, thera-

py and spirituality that resulted it success-

    ful treatment.

It is also a very practical

    book, offering an arsenal of

    useful tips to married cou-

    ples.

    By sharing the very many

    mistakes I made during my

    marriage, the book will serve

as a guide to married couples

    who might be facing troubled

    waters, she says.

    In this respect issues like

    forgiveness and the freedom

it brings is looked at in-depth

    and from a womens perspec-

    tive.

    Swanson hails from Rav-

    ensmead and currently calls

    Durbanville home.

    She is a radiographer of

    profession, but as a multital-

ented gospel artist her career spans more

    than a decade.

V Entry to the book signing is free where guest

speaker DeniseWilliams from Radio Tygerberg, mo

ust the skin and quills of a porcupine

were found on an open field opposite

    Grysbok Street near DUrbanvale in

    Durbanville last Monday.

This, a resident believes, is proof that the

animal may have been hunted and skinned

by a human being. She speculated that it

could have been workers from a nearby

construction site, Clara Anna Fontein, who

seem to be staying overnight in the open

    space.

According to her she often sees rubbish

andwine bottles under the trees in the open

space between the Belvedere Estate and ad-

    jacent neighbourhood in Vissershok Road

    while walking.

She was walking on Monday 13 June

when she spotted the bizarre sight.

For years there has been a family of por-

cupines living in DUrbanvale and another

family living in the drains opposite the cir-

    cle at Vissershok Road.

We have been lucky enough to see an

adult sniffing in our driveway early one

morning andmymomhas even seen the ba-

bies near Vissershok Road, she says.

Whilst walking, I noticed a large pile of

quills lying in the field opposite the circle.

I sincerely doubt this was an animal attack-

ing the porcupine perhaps it was an ani-

mal of another sort a human animal?

I certainly hope not. If so, then why

would someone want to hurt this defence-

    less animal?

We are so lucky to have these beautiful

creatures living close to us, but with all the

development going on, we are not going to

be seeing them for very much longer, she

    says.

The Cape porcupine is the largest rodent

in Africa they can attain a mass of over

20 kilogram. The quills are modified hairs

and used only in defence. They are not able

    to shoot their quills.

On enquiry to the City of Cape Town, Jo-

    ergy, environmental and spatial planning,

says there are porcupines living in the Uit-

    kamp wetland nature reserve.

We have videos and photographs of

them, which were captured by the motion

sensing cameras that have previously been

placed in the area, he says.

Porcupines do enter gardens and urban

areas on occasion while foraging. We have

had quite a few cases of porcupines enter-

ing the gardens of residents on the bounda-

ry of the nature reserve. These gardens had

    flowers with underground bulbs which

    they like to eat.

According to Van der Merwe porcupines

have very few natural enemies and are oc-

casionally hunted by leopards and lions.

yohet oopgegaan toehy sy sig ver-

    loor het.

Hy was n uitblinker op laerskool,

maar net n skaduwee op horskool.

    Dimanvandiewestelike kusstreekwas

aan heroen verslaaf toe hy in n ernstige

    motorfietsongeluk betrokke was.

ek enmymaats dagga begin rook. Op hor-

skool het ek begin raves bywoon saammet

ouer vriende en kennis gemaak met ander

dwelms soos LSD, buttons, ecstacy, crack en

    heroen, vertel hy.

    Iemand anders s: Die dwelmprobleem

het by my al hoe erger geword en ek het

alle dwelms probeer. Op 40 het heroen am-

per my lewe gekos toe ek vir dood in die

    hospitaal gelos is.

    Storie agter verslawing

Daar is n storie agter elke verslawing,

nie so kon voortgaan nie, s n ander per-

    soon.

Ek het begin dwelms gebruik as gevolg

van kleintyd-trauma. Ek was baie sensi-

Ek was bang vir alles en my pa het my vir

alles blameer. Ek het begin sigarette en

dagga rookenhet baie gedrink, s dieman

    slawing beter verstaan.

    Ver-slaaf-ing. Hulle het slawe geword.

Hy gaan voort: My ouers het gedink ek

slaap oor byvriende enhet niks geweet van

dwelms nie. Ons het nooit daaroor gepraat

nie.My ouers het altyd geld gegee as ek vra

stra geld.

is gewone adolessente probleme. Ek dink

    hul kind dwelms gebruik.

baie goed gedoen. Hy het n motorfiets ge-

kry en het lang ente gery as hy niks ge-

    had het om te doen

    nie.

    Was verveeld

    Maar toe een Son-

    dag ...

    Ek was verveeld

    en sonder om te

    dinkhet ekweer he-

    roen gaan koop en

    gerook.

Ek was toe in n motorfiets-

ongeluk en my gesig was vermink en ek

was blind. Dit was n aaklige tyd vol pyn

en selfverwyt. Ek het geglo God straf my

    oor my dwelmgebruik.

walms, dan sper my niesgatte oepe soes n

pd sn. Dan knyp ek my neus toe en stap

weg.

    dangaanditweg.Ekdinknet aandie string

negatiewe gevolge wat wag as ek weer

    dwelms of alkohol gebruik.

Die man wat in die vroe sewentigs

Kaapstad toe gekomhet, en bevryding in

alkohol gevind het, voeg by: Vandag is dit

sal gaan slaap. N meer as 16 jaar leef ek

    my nugterheid met

    een onbesonne daad

    van my weggeneem

    kan word.

    Ek het nie plan-

    ne om nugter te bly

    nie,maar slegs hier-

    die een wete: dat ek

    nooit weer wil

    drink nie, dat ek nie

    hierdie nuwe ek

    weer in drank gaan

    verdrink nie. My

    beroof is.

My hande was vasgebind terwyl die ro-

wers twee kollegas se kele afgesny het. Ek

het n hek uit sy skarniere gehardloop. La-

    bre bors hul storie uitbasuin.

    verlossing verkondig. Jongmense moet

baie versigtig wees vir dagga, want dit is

    waar my probleme begin het.

Ek is blind,

maar ek lewe en ek is vry.

    Hulle het gedink dit

    is gewone adoles

    sente probleme. Ek

    dink hullewas te

    skaamenbang om

    tedink dat hul kind

    dwelmsgebruik.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    n Ope brief

    aan ons

    Bok-afrigter

    Beste Allister

saak dat jou ingevoerde Springbokke so

bietjie oorgewig en lusteloos op die

    speelveld lyk.

So bietjie

    loodvoetig en lomp, n?

Om daardie rede wil ek jou aanraai om

maar te hou by die Suid-Afrikaners wat

hul brood op eie bodem verdien.

En plaaslike spelers, Allister, wat op

huidige spelpeil hul plek in die span

    verdien.

Ons praat nie hier van die regte

kleursamestelling van die span nie. Ons

    praat ook nie hier

    van ervaring nie.

    My beroep op jou

    is juis om te

    vergeet van erva-

    ring en prestasies

    uit die verre

    verlede. Frik du

    Preez en Naas

    Botha gaan byvoor-

    oplossing wees nie.

    Ook nie Victor of

    Jean nie.

    Kies die ouens

    wat vanjaar

    uitgeblink het in

    die superrugby-kompetisie. Manne soos

    Ruan Combrinck, Warren Whiteley en

Jaco Kriel. Kyk net watter reuse-verskil

gaan jy n span vol jong, hardebaarde

saamvat, wat die stampe en stote van

toetsrugby ken en onder die knie het.

Dis die enigste manier om te roll,

Allister! Trust me on this one!

The other day it was reported

that 300 members of one party

    in the Western Cape jumped

    ship to join the opposition.

This tells me one of two

    things:

    They all suddenly had an

    epiphany about the bad

    policies of the previous party,

    or they were promised some-

    thing.

Now this is nothing new and

it is perceived to work to the

benefit of the party gaining the

    new members. It does not.

    It does however, unfortunate-

    ly, just show how shallow

some people are when it comes

to election time as they are

    serving themselves and not the

    communities they supposedly

represent. As soon as a better

    ustworkandnoplay this is the picture

many employees are facedwith today in

the grown-up world of a tough, strug-

    gling economy.

A Durbanville couple, Shane and Rozelle

    Johansen, launched their first play@work

book last Tuesday at Tables at Nitida after

they have developed a unique new concept

to introduce play to peoples work day.

We want people to discover how adding

a bit of play can leave them refreshed in

body and mind, less stressed, anxious and

    overwhelmed andmore innovative and cre-

ative, as well as a better individual and

    team member, says Rozelle.

I remember as a child the endless play

times. We grew up on the Cape flats with

a neighbourhood filled with other barefoot,

    high-spirited and imaginative kids. Our

lunches would be mud cakes baked off the

pavement; early autumns were spent in the

elaborate castles we built from Port Jack-

son trees and endless summers in our pool.

Play was beautiful, creative and free.

    I guesswegrowupandourplay changes,

adapts and sometimes we even forget to

play as the seriousness of being grown up

and the responsibilities of life cloud our

view. My first grownup reality check was

landing my first real job. My dreams and

visions of how easy and fun life was, were

replaced with a sense of boredom, frustra-

tion, dashed hopes, a mild depression, re-

trenchment and the like, she explains.

My career took on a number of twists

and turns and I discovered aworkspace that

valued working hard and playing hard.

Work was interspersed with dress-ups, kar-

aoke and competitions. But, the economy

changed and we found ourselves working

longer and harder with play times becom-

    ing further and further apart.

I was working in human relations and

watching people as the walking dead

steadily losing hope and heart, running on

the treadmill trying to keep their heads

above water. This disturbed me and I guess

I felt trapped, because I was in the same

    boat.

She engaged with employees in team

building and she started to experimentwith

    play.

    Every time people played, something

    magical happened. They left refreshed,

lighter and ready to face their work.

When she and husband Shane began col-

laborating in the work space, they widened

and deepened their play at work experi-

ments and took teams and individuals on

play journeys and piloting play interven-

    tions.

It dawned on us that we could give back

to the world of work by creating a taster

experience for people of what bringing play

back to work could do for them, she says.

This is how the @work series was born

with their first book having been launched.

People are encouraged to instead of

grabbing a rushed coffee break at their lap-

top or wolfing down a sandwich between

    meetings deliberately and deservedly

schedule in a daily break to bring the fun

and playfulness into their life and work.

Why should your meeting notes be writ-

ten in strict soldiering lines when you can

doodle them in your favourite colours? Ro-

    zelle asks.

V Contact Rozelle on 082 513 4320 or send an email

    to [email protected] with enquiries.

    A

    panther never blushes.

    If this phrase makes you

    think of mushrooms,

    then you have probably gone

    mushroom foraging at Delheim

    wine estate.

    Armedwith gumboots andwarm

    jackets, the knowledge shared by

    GaryGoldman, amushroom fundi,

and a good shot of glhwein, a

group of about 40 people set off to

the misty pine forest on Delheim

on Youth Day last week to look for

    wild mushrooms.

    Everybody was hoping to find

baskets full of porcini (Boletus ed-

ulis) according to chefs the Rolls

    Royce ofmushrooms, selling at pri-

    ces from R380 per kilogram.

Vuvuzela, one of the farms Jack

    Russells, runs along eagerly. The

pine forest opened up a whole new

    world to this newcomer.

    Normally this reporter would

have only noticed the birdsong, the

beautiful trees and how steep and

slippery the hill was after a few

days of winter rain, but through

the eyes of a mushroom forager,

the bed of leaves under the trees

came alive with its hidden trea-

    sures beautiful fairytale bright

    red mushrooms, purplish ones,

dotted brown ones, but mostly lit-

    tle brown jobs.

It seemed far more difficult out

in the field than Gary made it

sound back in the historic cellar

    where he made his presentation.

Gary explained that due to the

heavy rain the mushrooms die off

    rather quickly and becomemushy,

and their colours wash out, which

    makes identification more diffi-

    cult.

There are over 100 000 types of

mushrooms, of which 100 are poi-

sonous and only 10 are deadly. Of

these deadly ones, four can be

found in South Africa. It is there-

fore best to learn at least what

    these four look like,Garywarned.

    What colour a mushroom bruis-

es is often the secret to identifying

it, like the poisonous panther (Am-

    anita pantherina) that looks exact-

ly like the blusher (Amanita rubes-

cens) the latter is delicious, but

    the panther kills.

While they both have a skirt and

    white gill, the blusher becomes

    reddish in colour when bruised,

while the panther does not change

    its colour hence the

    phrase a panther never

    blushes.

    Some mushrooms,

    like the Cape russula

    (Russula capensis), one

    can only eat when they

    are young and fresh, be-

    cause the older ones can

    be attacked by another

    fungus. Another, like

    the shaggy ink cap (Cop-

    rinus comatus)must not

    be eatenwhen they start

    to darken at the bottom.

    The common ink cap

    cannot be consumed

    within three days before

    and after drinking alco-

    hol. Others like the Tur-

    key Tail can assist in

    treating breast cancer,

    while others lower cho-

    lesterol or help for other

    ailments.

    Then there are chick-

    enof thewoods (Laetipo-

    rus sulphureus), which

    tastes exactly like chick-

    en, and the shrimp rus-

    sula (Russula xerampelina), which

    smells just like shrimp, thedyeball

or dog turd fungus, which grows

    only underneath Eucalyptus trees.

On the top of the list of poisonous

ones is the death cap (Amanita

    phalloides) which can easily be

identified by its volva (sack) at

the root. They are highly poison-

ous and break down the human or-

gans such as the liver and kidneys.

It causes 95% of deaths due to

    mushrooms.

    Identify mushrooms correctly is

not for beginners, and so it seems,

    neither is cooking them.

    Whencookingmushrooms,Gary

    advises, one must remember that

they consist of 98% water and

therefore it is best to use high heat

to cook them, otherwise it becomes

    watery.

That they absorb water and be-

comes mushy is also the reason

why you should never wash mush-

rooms, but just brush orwipe them

    off before use, he says.

    Mushroom foraging at Delheim

was started six years ago by Nora

    Sperling-Thiel, who grewup on the

farm and as a child learned the

skill from her mother when they

    went foraging for mushrooms at

    certain times of the year.

It only struck me many years

later that it was such a privilege

    and special experience that we

should share it with others, she

    says.

She and Gary believe the moon

has something to do with the

    emerging of mushrooms.

    Gary says mushrooms grow

    from mycelium, the fungal orga-

nism of the mushroom, which he

    describes as the earths internet.

    Themoon sees themycelium as

a body of water and then pulls the

    mushrooms out, he says.

    To help people identify mush-

rooms correctly, they can post pho-

    tographs of the mushrooms on

    https://vmus.adu.org.za.

One needs a permit to forage

mushrooms in forests such as in

    the Newlands forest, usually only

obtainable from the end ofMay un-

    til the end of July.

    VFreepermits are issuedby theNewlands

    Forest Sanparks conservation office.

    Mushroom foraging a delicate art

The mushroom fundi Gary Goldman here explains to the group how to identify certain types of mushrooms. On the

far left (in purple) is Nora SperlingThiel on the lookout for more gems.

Elna and Franz Holm from Durbanville show off

their collection of pinering mushrooms (Lactari

us deliciosus), which are most popular in the

Western Cape. If it is cut, the hollow stem turns

into a pineapple ring. Franz used to join his

grandmother as a child in mushroom foraging in

    Sasolburg. PHOTOS: ESM ERASMUS

    Gerald Ponte from Plattekloof found

    this fly agaric mushroom.

    This split gill mushroom was

discovered on the bark of a tree. It

    has medical qualities.

    The panther mushroom is very

poisonous and can easily be mistak

    en for the blusher.

This bright red mushroom, the fly

agaric, is also poisonous when eaten

and can be used to kill flies in a very

creative way. You must slice it, dry it

and you are ready to tackle your fly

    problem.

Danil and Friends Fund, a non-profit

    organisation which provides a holis-

tic approach to supporting families who

have children with special needs, launched

its Different is cool school awareness

    campaign.

We have become increasingly aware of

    societys misperception about people with

disabilities, more so evident in children

    whose uncertainty and, sadly, sometimes

negative view of those with special needs is

based purely on a lack of knowledge and un-

    derstanding, says marketing director

    Nicky de Beer.

    With empathy and compassion being

emotions best instilled at a young age, the

    organisation created a campaign which

could be shared with children of school go-

ing age in a fun, but informative way.

The entire program, which lasts no more

than fifteen minutes and can be easily slot-

ted into an assembly, consists of a short one-

act play which touches on several aspects

regarding disabilities including the use of

the word retard in a derogatory way.

In essence it teaches the children to ap-

preciate difference in others, she adds.

    A short Powerpoint presentation about

what the Danil and Friends Fund is about

and what it strives to achieve, along with

an interactive game which encourages the

children to view each individuals packag-

ing in a different light, ends the presenta-

    tion.

    The excitement and eagerness with

which our campaign was received at both

Mikro Primary in Kuils River and Bastion

Primary in Brackenfell, have given us a re-

newed appreciation for just how necessary

a program of this nature is, and we encour-

age all educational institutions to consider

introducing our program to their students,

    says De Beer.
