That specific retention dam on the corner of Vatican and Barcelona streets was in the spotlight on Facebook a few days earlier when two schoolboys were apparently seen shooting at the ducks with BB guns. Three dead ducks were spotted, but no charges were laid. Planned The operation to remove the 15 Mallard ducks was planned in collaboration with the SPCA and Birdlife South Africa. This came after the Biodiversity Unit did a presentation about a month ago for the councillors of Subcouncil 7 (Koeberg) to in- form them of its campaign to save indige- nous waterfowl, which is enforced by na- tional legislation. Representatives of the SPCA and Birdlife SA were also present at the presentation. The councillors were told the roll-out of the campaign will be on Thursday 3 October, said Gerhard Fourie, chairperson of Sub- council 7 (Koeberg). Mallard ducks are an alien invasive spe- cies and the males, who are aggressive breeders, are believed to be a threat to indig- enous species, specifically the yellow-billed ducks. Mallards, which is the ancestor of most breeds of domestic ducks, including white quacker ducks, were declared a category one invasive species in the country in member regulations that were passed on 19 July this year in terms of the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act (2004). According to Fourie he was not aware that the roll-out of the campaign scheduled for last Thursday included that the Mallard ducks would be removed on that day. Campaign “They just informed us of the problem. We also discussed the problem with ‘hadedas’, house crows and rabbits at the Vredekloof dam. “We specifically said at that presentation that if they start a campaign, there must be a public process to inform the residents of Durbanville accordingly,” he said. “At no stage was it discussed that they would come to remove the ducks. “However, it was wrongly stated on Face- book the ducks will be poisoned, which is not true. They would be sedated and taken else- where to be euthanised,” he said. ent way, Dingley said.In 2008, Gallie was appointed as deputy

principal at Fairmont High School in Dur-banville. She is the deputy for disciplineand pastoral care, which may seem contra-dictory, but she believes that disciplineshould come from a place of caring andwhere everyone is treated with respect.

As the head of the life orientation teamof 13 teachers, Gallie is responsible for vari-ous life skills programmes, which are de-signed to equip learners to cope with thestringent demands of life, as well as dynam-ic and meaningful lessons about the diffi-cult issues in a teenagers life.

She also does counselling and sees her of-fice as a train station, where staff andlearners are welcome to step in for advice, guidance or just a chat, Dingley continued.

    Awarded for herspirit of generosity

Shereen Gallie of Fairmont High won theleadership award in the district section of theNational Teachers Awards.

Life is by no means easy andyes we are all striving foracceptance in this world. Butmy question to all is: Whatwould life be like withoutcommunity?

I personally believe thatcommunity brings forth togeth-erness, through community weall become as one. Each indi-vidual is a link to his or herown community. For myselfand my family we are a part ofthe Kraaifontein community.

No matter what the communi-ty you might be a part of, its aknown fact that in your veryown community, I believe thatthere are those in need of ahelping hand those who aresilenced by their struggles.

Many times we are aware ofthose who are hurting, due tothem maybe living close in ourreach, but yet we bluntly turnour heads in the other direc-tion. All Im saying is it takesone person to rise up and bethat difference, yes it onlytakes one person with a willingheart to create a communitychain reaction of many helpinghands.

What would community belike, if not for those that have agiving heart? Today I personal-ly want to commend all thoseprecious people out their whoare already part of the differ-ence and to those that are not Ido want to encourage to join in.

Think of those who arehurting due to their struggles, whether it be financially, emotionally or even physicallyand remind yourself that itcould have been me.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    ietswat eers inmatriek in onskougeneem

derdom reeds baie belangrik.

Indien daar by jou twyfel bestaan oor

Talent does not look at age when it comesto having what it takes.70-year-old Olaf Roberg from Bothasig

proved this after he won the Forever YoungMusic Competition at the end of September. The competition held at Ferrymans Tav-

ern in the V&A Waterfront was tough andexhausting, but Roberg pushed through towow the audience. And TygerBurger found out what makes

him tick.I fell in love with music when I met a few

friends in Carletonville. Hansie Roodt fromJohannesburg as well as Dirkie Smit andTheo Erasmus from Randburg along withmyself played in a little band at Die Boerep-laas every Saturday, he said. This was in the early 1970s.Whenmywife and Imoved to Cape Town

I started listening to Elvis, Roy Orbison,Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Nat KingCole. I also liked the country songs byWillieNelson and Glen Campbell, he added. And from there it was magic.I used to go to bop-sessions as they were

called in those days and we played in hallsand also in churches. But, then for over 40I did not pick up the old guitar for gigs.

I only played at family braais or whenwewent camping with friends. In July my sister-in-law told me about a

singing talent competition for people overthe age of 40 years. The elimination process

took place over eight weeks, but at first, Iwas very hesitant to enter the competition,he said.Eventually his children persuaded him

and he entered the competition on the lastday.I did it just for fun, he said. This fun then got him into the semi-final

and he was one of six contestants to gothrough to the final round.I had a few songs to choose from for the

final, but I decided to challenge myself andtry out a new song, he said.He chose to sing Blueberry Hill and

Bad Moon Rising by Creedance Clearwa-ter Revival.I was a little nervous, but once I got on

the stage I was in my element, he said.Next was the shock of when he was called

out as the winner of the competition. It was such a surprise. I won an eight-

hour recording session and a neat micro-phone and headphones, he added.Even thoughhehadnt played for yearshis

fingers found the beat to themusic of his gui-tar. People ofmy age should never be afraidto try new things. When we listen to musicfrom our age, seeing people we know per-forming, it reminds us of our past and thelives we lived from the 50s onwards, hesaid.

Never too old to wow a crowd

Olaf Roberg might be 70 years old but he hasa raw talent which inspires young artists tofollow in his steps. PHOTO: TINA BURGER

Theres still a rape crisis in SATINA BURGER

    @kaapse_kind

Lets not forget that there is still arape crises. This is evident from the latestcrime statistics as revealed in the most re-cent South African Police report said Lt ColPatrick Jacobs of theBothasig police station.Last year 56 sexual offence cases were re-

ported at the Goodwood police station and 10offenceswere reported at the Bothasig policestation.Does this indicate a socio-economic prob-

lem?Jacobs said this is a reflection on societys

norms, but it is an issue which is being ad-dressed in the Western Cape.He mentions that date rape is especially

becoming a problem, and says just becausecitizens do not see this on a daily basis, doesnot mean that it is not happening.

Date rapeDate rape is not different from any other

form of rape, except that the victim wakesup afterwards and doesnt know whether ornot they have been raped, and by how manypeople they were violated, Jacobs said. With the upcoming end of matric break

and the December holidays where most postmatric learners head off to vacation spotssuch as Plettenberg Bay the dangers of beingdate raped increases Jacobs said.Children end up going to after-parties or

clubs to celebrate and to have fun. Some girlsare easy targets once they are under the in-

fluence of alcohol, and this is when a daterape drug can easily be slipped into a drink,he adds.Date rape drugs include Rohyponol

(roofies or forget pills), and GHB (liquid X,salt water or scoop).According to Jacobs there are myths sur-

rounding date raping such as those sur-rounding race or ethnicity.Over 90 % of sexual assaults occur be-

tween people of the same racial or ethnicbackground. This is why it is important tonot trust people, even friends sometimes, hesaid.

Closed drinksHesuggests that everyperson shouldbe re-

sponsible for opening their own beverageandnot leaving it on a table or bar top or giveit to a stranger to look after it for you.But is this enough? It is important that

people know that every decision has reper-cussions, Jacobs said.He also suggests that rape is classified in

different ways and that school-leaversshould understand the distinction betweenthe different types of rape.According to the South African law only

a male person can be convicted of rape. A fe-male who assists a male can only be convict-ed as an accomplice to rape.Rape comprises any penetration of the pri-

vate parts of the female by the male organand it is immaterial whether the sexual actwas completed or whether the woman be-came pregnant as a result thereof. In terms of section five of the Prevention

of Family Violence Act. 1993 (Act No 133 of1993), the fact that the perpetrator and thevictim were lawfully married at the timewhen the intercourse took place, does notconstitute a defence. A husband may there-fore be convicted of rape if he has sexual in-tercourse with his wife without her con-sent, he said.Mere submission is not consent.A woman who is overpowered by a man

andwho on account of her fear, fails to resistthe man, does not consent. The woman must be capable of consent. A

womanwho is asleep, extremely drunk or in-sane is unable to give valid consent. Sexualintercourse with such a woman constitutesrape.A girl below the age of twelve years is pre-

sumed to be incapable of consent. To havesexual intercoursewith such a girl thereforeconstitutes rape.Rape Crisis South Africa has been empow-

ering women on the road to justice and sup-porting them on their journey to recoverysince 1976. This according to Director Kath-leen Dey who says they learn from everyrape survivor that they meet just what ittakes to walk such difficult paths.According to their website (www.rapecri-

sis.org.za) each year Rape Crisis offers face-to-face counselling to 650 individuals andfamilies, and the 24-hour helpline offers in-formation and advice to 4 000 callers.Counsellors are also there to greet and in-

form 2 800 survivors at two of Cape Townsbusiest Thuthuzela Care Centres.V For more information contact Rape Crisis WesternCape on 021 447 1467.

Ever wondered how the criminal jus-tice system works?Lt Col Patrick Jacobs, station com-

mander of the Bothasig police sharedhis knowledge on this topic at a re-cent meeting on Friday 4 October atthe Bothasig police station.

VThe crime is reported to the near-est police station.

VThe police open a docket and in-vestigate the crime.

VThe docket is then sent to courtwhere the prosecutor will decide ifmore investigation is needed.

VThe National Prosecutor (NPA)will decide whether or not to prose-cute.

VThere are three ways of goingabout this.

VFirstly, if the NPA decides not toprosecute it will be because the caseis not strong enoughbecause of a lackof evidence.

VIf they decide to prosecute thecase goes to court for charges.

VThe prosecutormay also decide todivert thematter for alternative reso-lution.

VFrom there, in court, the accusedmay apply to be released on bailwhilewaiting for the trial to concludeafter there is a bail hearing. The trialmay be postponed numerous times tocollect more evidence or because theaccused requires a lawyer.

VThe prosecutor will be first to callawitness to present some evidence toprove the accused is guilty or notguilty.

VThe accused or his/her lawyermay then also call a witness topresent evidence.

VAfter both sides have been heard, the presiding officer decides if the ac-cused is guilty or not.

VIf they are guilty the accused issentenced by the presiding officerand may spend time in jail and be re-leased on parole. The accused may also have to pay

a fine or compensation to the clerk ofthe court or other sentencing optionsmay apply.
