After 64 years and contacting a total of359 countries and islands, world re-nowned amateur radio ham Dennis

Wells of Durbanville reached the pinnacleof his hobby.

Wells (85), whose call sign ZS1AU is well-known in international radio ham circles,has just received a #1 honour roll plaquefrom the American Radio Relay League forachieving a “full house”.

A full house is the achievement of makingradio contact with each and every countryor island on the planet where a radio ama-teur operates. In radio ham jargon they areknown as entities, due to the fact that someare not countries as such, but remote point

on a geographical grid, or sometimes barelymore than a rock sticking out of the water.

Dennis achieved his spot on the honourroll despite a heart attack in September lastyear and his computer crashing at the timeof an important DXpedition, which is a tripto set up a radio relay in an area - often re-mote - where few radio hams operate.

Additionally, a tropical storm caused aDXpedition to a remote Pacific Ocean islandto be cancelled halfway through, and someentities he had already contacted over theyears had been renamed, meaning he had tocontact them again.

Career highlightWhen Dennis took TygerBurger into his

“shack”, which is what he calls his radioequipment room at his house in The Pad-

docks in Bowlers Avenue, he enthused abouthow lucky he was to make contact among40 000 others. The suspense when dialling into a remote station was palpable. One couldalmost feel the ocean mist on your face fromthe 2007 DXpedition to the Scarborough reefin the South China sea, a mere rock stickingout of the ocean where a platform for the ra-dio station was built.

“When a destination is so remote, nobodyever goes there, these DXpeditions are or-ganised to help radio hams all around theworld to be able to make contact. If you missout on it, you may have to wait another 10years for another opportunity,” he explains.

Setting up a station on the reef with radiohams from around the world was one of thehighlights of his amateur radio career.

Another was a trip to Sable island in the

North Atlantic Ocean near Canada in March2011, which he reached by using sixth senseto tune in to the right frequency and recog-nising the voice of one of the expedition teammembers after his computer crashed.

Pinnacle“Sable island is the pinnacle of DXing in

the world,” he said.He has been doing it for years, but the pos-

sibility of reaching a “full house” became arealistic challenge when he was approachedin October 2010 by the awards manager anda field checker for the American Radio RelayLeague in South Africa. He was invited tosubmit his application for free membershipto the DX Century Club run by the AmericanRadio Relay League.

“What transpired after that caused a bigsplash in the records of our DXers in SouthAfrica and in 2011, he was awarded a DXCChonour roll plaque for being within 10 of thetop of the total of 331 countries and islandsin the world – the 10 most remote and mostrare ones.“This in itself was a rare milestone in our

South African radio amateurs ability to getthis far.”Hemanaged thatwith a total of 334 – three

more than what was necessary.“It takes decades or even longer to

achieve. He also reached another 19 coun-tries, which no longer existed or were re-named, totalling 359 countries.

“This is the highest total in Africa, andreaching a full house is also a first for CapeTown.“How I got here is a miracle. I got the feel-

ing of Atlas when the world was lifted off hisshoulders,” he said.The last six countries (entities) he reached

were Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Malpelo is-land, Myanmar (previously Burma) and thevery last Mellish reef – a mere sandbank on-ly a few hundred metres long off the eastcoast of Australia.“It is only a fewmeters above sea level and

only has bird and sea life. It was reached byboat or yacht and then by a rubber dinghyon an DXpedition at the end of March thisyear.

Life savers“The cost of this operation was about half

a million rand and was intended for tendays, but a huge tropical storm caused themto leave after only a week.“Itwas toodangerous to staywith rain and

wind gusts that tore their tents. I got in theirlog book a fewhours before they left in a hur-ry! I was very, very fortunate as they madecontact with over 40 thousand stations andI was one of them!” he said.“If I did not get them, I would have missed

out on this #1 in the world award” Wellssaid.Radio hams regularly take part in rescue

work and attend to Mayday calls.Other highlights were the Mayday rescue

operations he was involved in, such as amedical emergency in the Antartica in the1960’s.He still becomes emotional when he tells

the story of how the life of a seriously in-jured soldier in Mozambique was saved inthe 1976when the hospital ran out of his rareblood type. Blood plasma sources weretracked down by radio hams and a radioham from Johannesburg flew his private

aeroplane to deliver 50 litres of blood plasmain total darkness at around 03:00 in themorn-ing – just in time to save the soldier’s life.TygerBurger reported on Wells’s hobby in

2010 when he celebrated 60 years of amateurradio. He is a member of the Oakdale ClubinBellville, honorary lifememberof theCapeTown Club since 2003 and honorary member

of the SA Radio League since 2006.He has met famous people there in his

shack in front of his operating desk, suchas King Hussein I of Jordan, Senator BarryGoldwater, who was running for presidentof the USA in 1962, American astronaut DrChuck Brady, who became a personalfriend who also came to visit him. Manyothers have visited him in his shack overthe years.

Life achievementHe also assisted South African yachts-

man Bertie Reed to complete his racearound the world when the autopilot ofReeds’ yacht broke and had to receive re-pair instructions over the radio.But reaching “full house” is not his only

achievement. He survived colon cancer in1993 and last year he needed a stent aftera heart attack.“I dedicate my award to all the people

who have helped me over the years – firstto my father and also my wife, Joan, whowas my inspiration and support”.Wellswas introduced to amateur radioby

his father, Len Wells, who was at 10 yearsold the first person to hear the very firstsuccessful wireless transmission in SouthAfrica in 1920.His father died aged 45, after which he

took over his father’s licence in July 1950.There are about three to four million ra-

beweeg het” toe sy in Botterblomstraatry – op pad omhaar kinders by die skoolte gaan haal.

SkoendoosSy het die klein skilpadjie opgetel enin ’n skoendoos gesit, wat in die karwas.Dit was skaars groter as ’n R5-muntstuk.Terwyl sy ry, het die diertjie ’n aardigereuk afgeskei. “Dit het verskriklik ge-stink – kompleet soos seewater.” Sy hetlater gehoor datwaterskilpaaie kliere ophul agterpote het, wat ’n stof afskei omhul vyande af te skrik.Sy het ’n foto vir haar diereliefhebber-broer, Bernard Voges van Langebaan,gestuur en hy het bevestig dis wel ’n wa-terskilpadjie.Die bekende avonturier en motive-ringspreker, Braam Malherbe, met wiesy bevriend is, het ook bevestig dis ’nmoeras-waterskilpadjie (marsh terra-pin).

BespiegelOor hoe dit daar in die teerpad gekomhet, kan ’n mens net bespiegel, sê Belin-da. Daar is wel ’n dam daar naby op diehoek van Murray- en Stuiwerstraat.Malherbe gaan die diertjie nou aan-neem en saam met sy ander eksotiesediere aanhou tot dit groot genoeg is omvrygelaat te word.Intussen voer Belinda die skilpadjierou maalvleis en bly hy onder ’n stukkieboombas in ’n blyplek wat sy vir hom in-gerig het.“Ek is nou nie so ’n groot diereliefheb-ber nie, maar die dingetjie is wragtig ou-lik enhetnogal persoonlikheid,”koer sy.

sult of natural selection and adaptationthroughout the centuries.Unlike a landrace, breeds such as grey-

hounds or labradors have been created byhumans choosing specific traits such ashunting skill or fur colour. They are selec-tively bred to get a uniform behaviour andappearance. Some breeds were landracesbred in an attempt at standardisation.However, as soon as you standardise a

landracewith selective breeding it becomesa breed, not a landrace.Africanis dogs are not uniform in appear-

ance as it is an umbrella term for a few dif-ferent “strains”.They are generally medium-sized with a

functional, slender build, wedge-shapedheads and long muzzles. Their short coatsareusually light-brown, but canbebrindledor patched. Some also have a “ridgeback”.A feature common to them all is their

weet hoe om lief te wees vir iemand wat ditglad nie wil hê nie en sorg dat daar ’n konnek-sie met jou kind bly. Al wat jy het, is ’n ver-houdingmet jou kind. As jy nie daaraanwerknie, het jy niks. Omtrent alles in jou tienerse wêreld verander – jou liefde moet nie eendaarvan wees nie.”

Ouers moet hul tieners monitor sonderdat dit soos ’n strafkamp is.“Tieners voel ongemaklik met ’n omge-

wing waar geen reëls is nie, maar jy moethul toelaat om hul sê te sê. A young woman from Brackenfell, DanielleJacobs, has been awarded a bursary fromThe Cape Winemakers Guild to help her pur-sue her dreams of becoming a winemaker.

Danielle is one of four oenology and cellartechnology students at the Elsenburg Agri-cultural College who have received Cape Wi-nemakers Guild bursaries.

The Cape Winemakers Guild Billy Hof-meyr SETA bursary programme providesstudents with financial support during theirfinal year of study.

This year’s bursary recipients include Ki-ara Scott from Strandfontein and ClaytonChristians from Stellenbosch, as well as Ma-halia Matshete from Gauteng.

Danielle’s goal is “to be in a position whereI am able to educate other young, aspiringwinemakers”.

With previous industry experience and an

enthusiasm for winemaking, she wants todevelop her own style of wine with the know-ledge that she gains through her studies.

After graduating, these aspiring winema-kers will be able to apply for the three-yearinternship with the Cape Winemakers GuildProtégé programme.

It is a great opportunity for the studentsto gain insight into the industry and workalongside some of the county’s best winema-kers. Hier is (van links) die sirkusmeester, Mario(Dean Balie), sirkusnar (Martelize Kolver) enVlooi (De Klerk Oelofse). Voor is Wilma (CrystalDonna Roberts).

Dis Augustus en dit beteken Vlooi en symaats neem weer die Kunstekaap-teater ophorings van Maandag 11 tot Vrydag 29 Au-gustus.

Die vervaardigers, Krazy Katz, in same-werking met Kunstekaap, het besluit datVlooi nou al op so baie avonture was – ditis per slot van rekening die veertiende jaar– dat hulle moes koppe krap vir ’n nuwe be-stemming en wat kan meer opwindendwees as die sirkus?

Die Cirque du Amar, al die pad van Pa-rys, Frankryk, is in die dorp en al wat leefen beef wil na die sirkus gaan.

Vlooi, Wilma en Ouma is van die gelukki-ges wat kaartjies kon kry, maar ’n groottragedie tref die sirkus – waterpokkies.

Net die sirkusmeester, Mario, en sy goge-laar, Carlos, is gespaar van die aaklige rooikolletjies. Moet hulle die vertonings kan-selleer of kan Vlooi tot die redding kom?

A local businessman is setting out ona music adventure, having just rele-ased his debut album, Verily, Verily.

Hyram Doolings, a Zevenwacht familyman, has roped in some of Cape Town’sfinest musicians to help on the gospel al-bum he launched in Kenridge this wee-kend.

“As a little boy I always wanted to sing,”Hyram says. His grandmother took him tochurch where she in-troduced him to thechoir master and itwas just a few monthsbefore he was singingsolo.

“The choir used tosit upstairs and the pe-ople used to turn theirbacks to see who thislittle boy singing is,”Hyram recalls.

Almost 50 yearsdown the line, Hy-ram’s desire to singturned into a “huge de-sire to write”, andthat’s how Verily, Veri-ly was born.

As a Capetonian, Hy-ram says he was al-ways fascinated byjazz, and he alwayswanted to sing a “jazzykind of gospel”.

While he hopes to spread the messageof God’s love, some of the songs are relatedto his own struggles, which brought himcloser to God.

As a child, Hyram was exposed to an al-coholic father and an abusive mother, andsinging was an escape for the young boywho once tried to commit suicide by jum-ping into a river.

He was saved by his uncle, but thatwasn’t the end of his near-death experien-ces. He got trapped in quicksand, nearlydrowned, and was hit by a car, which sawhim go through twelve operations and oc-cupational therapy to even out his mouth.

“Some of the songs are related to the suf-

fering of Jesus and I could somehow to re-late to that through my own suffering, butnothing compares to his suffering for me,”Hyram says.

While he points out that this theme isn’texplicitly laid out in the lyrics, it can befound in the “feeling of the music”.

Hyram’s grandmother used to oftenread the Bible to him and his siblings andthe albums’ name come from a scriptureshe was particularly fond of, John5:24:“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, excepta man be born of water and of the Spirit,

he cannot enter intothe kingdom of God.”

He says it was hisgrandmother’s rea-ding that eventuallyled to the album,which he has dedica-ted to her.

Hyram says he takeshis hat off to the peoplewho worked with himon Verily, Verily. “It’sguys that have reallybeen in the industryfor a long time.”

Camillo Lombard,Jonathan Rubain andDonveno Prins are justsome of the names inthe album sleeve.

It’s with the help ofhis family and theloyal people that sur-round him that Hyram

knows his business is in safe hands whilehe pursues his music career. He felt, con-sidering how tough the local music indus-try is, that he wanted to build a career andhave some money in the bank before ta-king on the music world.

Tristan Hamilton (17) is not only havinga superb year on the golf course, he isalso a youngman who knows where he

is going in life.Tristan, who attends Fairmont High

school, started his year by winning the Dur-banville Junior Open in January at Durban-ville, where he is a member.“It was nice starting the year with a win

onmy home course. I really took some confi-dence from that win,” said Tristan.Tristanhas representedWesternProvince

at u-14, u-15, u-17 and u-19 levels.In May he represented Western Province

in the Riversdal Triangular tournamentagainst Boland and South Western Districts(SWD).“I didn’t play particularly well there and

my game wasn’t where it needed to be or

where it can be. So heading into the SouthAfrican High School Golf Championshipsback inJune inBloemfontein, I didn’t haveany expectations.“I ended up in fifth place out of 88 indi-

viduals, which was a great result for me.If you told me at the beginning of the weekthat I would end fifth I would have takenit with a smile, considering my gamewasn’t that great.”He kept the momentum by winning the

Prentice Cup at Mowbray in July with asuperb 71 and weeks later came very to awin at the Steenberg Junior Open, losingout in the playoff for a second placing.
