Die historiese uitspanplek Pampoen-kraal – die terrein tussen Voortrekker-en Hoofstraat en Wellingtonweg en

Kerkstraat in Durbanville se dorpskern –gaan in ’n nuwe projek tot ’n dorpsplein op-geknap word.

’n Openbare vergadering word op Maan-dag 23 Junie van 18:30 tot 20:00 in die Durban-ville-stadsaal gehou om die projek aan diepubliek bekend te stel as deel van die open-bare deelname-proses.

Mense kan tot 23 Julie kommentaar lewerof besware aanteken. Theresa Uys, raadslidvir wyk 21, het R400 000 van haar wyksraads-begroting beskikbaar gestel in die komendefinansiële boekjaar vir die beplanningsfasevan dié projek.

Behoefte“Daar is ’n behoefte by die gemeenskap

hiervoor uitgespreek,” het Uys gesê.Durbanville het in die vroeë 19de eeu ont-

staan rondom ’n varswaterfontein en hoof-saaklik gedien as uitspanplek vir reisigerswat op soek was na vars water. Die dorp het

aanvanklik as Pampoenkraal bekend ge-staan.

Die stuk grond, wat gesoneer is as openba-re oop ruimte, is daarom van historiese be-lang. Dit is ook geleë by die ingang van Dur-banville se sentrale sakekern, lui ’n verslagdeur Anne Smit, senior professionele be-ampte vir die noordelike distrik van die di-rektoraat ekonomiese, omgewings- en ruim-telike beplanning van die Kaapse stadsraad.

Die stuk grond is tans verwaarloos enhoofsaaklik hawelose mense sit en lê daarrond.

Luidens die verslag kom die historiese

waarde, asook visuele, simboliese en ont-spanningspotensiaal van die terrein nie totsy reg nie.

VisieDaar is by die Stad se onderskeie departe-

Two Durbanville homeschoolers gained tophonours in the prestigious Horizon Mathe-matics competition.

Peter Stead, grade 7, came first out of 9 100of the top mathematics learners from 65schools across the Western Cape, and recei-ved an iPad as his prize.

Sean van Wyk, grade 7, tied for secondplace and won a laptop computer. Sean isalso a member of a special team of mathe-matics learners who will represent the cityin an international competition taking pla-ce in Daejeon, Korea next month.

Another two homeschoolers from Dur-banville, Franco Hill and James Grove –both also in grade 7, were included in thetop 200 of the Horizon Mathematics compe-

tition.This competition was hosted by the Hori-

zon Educational Trust and has been run-ning for 14 years.

Schools are invited to enrol their mathe-matics learners in the first round. The topachievers make it through to the secondround, which consists of a MathematicsOlympiad style paper written under exami-nation conditions at the Star College in Sy-brand Park.

The top 200 achievers from the secondroundwere invited to a special awards cere-mony held at the Baxter Theatre ConcertHall on Friday 6 June and attended by se-veral dignitaries, including representati-ves from the Department of Education.

Dit moet die herontwikkeling van omlig-gende geboue op só ’n wyse inspireer dat ditdie straataktiwiteit sal vermeerder.

Die fokus moet wegbeweeg van ’n omge-wing waarin motors oorheers tot die daar-stel van ’n plein wat fokus op voetganger-verkeer.

Die primêre fokusgebied is die stuk grond,asook die aanliggende sypaadjies en Voor-trekkerweg.

Die omringende gebied, insluitende diehistoriese Rust-en-Vrede en gebied tussenRust-en-Vrede en Voortrekkerweg, sal egterook in ag geneem word met die beplanningvan die opknapwerk.

Hoewel die opknapping van die stuk grondna ’n plein nie enige verbintenis met Rust-enVrede in hierdie projek insluit nie, word indie verslag voorgestel dat die ontwerp van

die plein só ’n verbintenis in ag moet neemen moontlik maak.

’n Konsultant is reeds aangestel om ’n ge-detaileerde plan saam te stel sodat dié pleinmet sy omgewing sal integreer.

The traffic circle at the intersection ofLangeberg Road and Lord’s Walk inDurbanville is partially blamed for rat

running through the Wellway Park Eastneighbourhood.The R1,53 million circle – named Palm

TreeCircle because of the palm tree plantedin the middle – was officially opened in Ju-ne last year after 12 years of petitions andletters about the dangerous intersection onLangeberg Road.However, resident Robyn Louw, who has

been living in Camelia Road for the pastfour years, toldTygerBurger the circle con-tributes to rat running through herneighbourhood. According to her she hasbeen complaining about the rat-running forthe past 18 months.She says in morning peak hours drivers

take shortcuts between Wellington Roadand Langeberg Road via Lubbe Street, Ca-melia Road, Cyclamen Road and TambotieCrescent, and also between Langeberg Ro-ad and Lubbe Street.Drivers also use the same shortcut bet-

ween Goedemoed and Langeberg Road viaGoedemoed Street, Hartebees Crescent,Waterbok Road, Madeliefie Road, LubbeStreet, Camelia Road, Cyclamen Road andTambotie Crescent.This rat running came under the spot-

light at a meeting last Tuesday morning atthe corner of Tambotie Crescent and Came-lia Road between Louw and a senior citytraffic officer.

According to Louw the rat running beca-meworseafter the circlewas finishedabout12 to 14 months ago.It worsened further when, due to roa-

dworks inLangebergRoad, the city redirec-ted traffic via analternative route – the rou-te people are now rat running through.“And, of course, there has been the dra-

matic increase in crime in thewhole ofDur-banville that had ebbeduntil recentlywhenwe have had a spate of break-ins during theday within our neighbourhood watch areaalone,” she said.In a letter with recommendations by the

senior traffic officer after the meeting,which Louw made available to TygerBur-ger, he recommended speed bumps for Ca-melia Road, Cyclamen Road and TambotieCrescent.He also recommended adjusting the ti-

ming of the robots at Lubbe Steet and Lan-geberg Road to prevent traffic back upwhich forces vehicles to rat run throughWellway Park. He also recommended theregular monitoring and enforcing of stopsigns in the area.Subcouncil 7 chairperson Gerhard Fou-

rie said the speedhumps were already ap-proved last year.“These suggestions are nothing new. A

full traffic impact investigation was doneby traffic calming engineers about 18months ago, and their opinion was thatspeedhumpswill be the best solution for theproblem.“It has already been approved and accep-

ted by the subcouncil that these threespeedhumps be installed,” he said.

Die kinderhuis benodig tien onderne-mings om elk ’n stalletjie te beman, wat 100van die kinders sal bedien – soos deur ’n stal-letjie te beman wat 100 pannekoeke voorsien.

“Ons vra ook vir ondernemings om ’n do-nasie van 100 nie-bederfbare kositems temaak,” het Johanna Strauss, bemarkingsbe-stuurder van die kinderhuis, gesê.

The Soccer World Cup 2014 has finally ar-rived.

How magnificent it was when South Af-rica hosted it in 2010. The first goal scoredby Siphiwe Tshabalala followed by the fa-mous dancing from Bafana Bafana reallywarmed our hearts. It made us believe.This was a start of a fantastic month ofspectacular soccer.

Vuvuzelas came out in full swing eve-rywhere and a cacophony sounded allround. The big vuvuzela signalled everytime a goal was scored. Neighbours com-peted to blow the loudest. We even calledeach other out by blowing them duringhalftime to talk about the game. We dis-cussed goals scored, corners wasted andfouls acted out to cause the referee toaward unnecessary penalties.

Every car had at least one flag or mirrorsock attached to it displaying the SouthAfrican flag and/or other country’s.Whenstopping at the robots we all just smiledat each other.

Most people adopted another country af-ter Bafana Bafana failed to go through tothe next round.

We as Capetonians travelled by trainjust to walk the Fanwalk. Even though so-me didn’t have tickets to watch the match,we were there. And we will never forget.

Photos were taken, smiles were shared,and memories were made. Coffee was bre-wed. Burgers were sold. Big screens sho-ne, with thousands of eyes fixed on them.People dressed in the official shirt of thecountry they supported that evening.

It was winter. It was cold. But we hadso much fun. Cape Town was probably thesafest place ever. Transport was probablythe best. Late at night it was safe to comehome by train.

When we walked in the mall in our Bafa-na shirts, or anywhere,weembraceddiffe-rent people and talked to each other.

I miss the world cup. We came togetheras a nation, together with the world. Wewere one.

Sport can bind a nation together.As Mandela said, “Sport has the power

to change the world. It has the power toinspire. It has the power to unite peoplein a way that little else does. It speaks toyouth in a language they understand.Sport can create hope where once therewas only despair. It is more powerful thangovernment in breaking down racial bar-riers.”

“I roll up my sleeves and I get in the-re.”

Taki Amira, the new charipersontaking over the De Grendel subcoucil reinsfrom James Vos, says he does not like tostand on ceremony. He prefers to get thingsdone.

Amira moved from Ward 16, which is theAtlantic Seaboard and the Cape Town CBD,to take the chair in the Goodwood munici-pal office at the end of May. It was a suddenmove, but Amira sayshe is rea-dy for the challenge.

“I am a young old man,” saysthis grandfather of five, whocalls himself both an activistand a 100% family man.

Amira, his wife Bettie andtheir four children moved intoKenridge in 1993.

“In the first week I was in thehouse, therewas anotice in thenewspaper for a meeting inOakdale, about overhead po-wer lines going from Van Rie-beeckshof to what is now Willowbridge. Itwas the first public meeting I ever attended.The message was: ‘we are just doing thismeeting because we have to, but those po-wer lines are going up’. So I stood up andsaid we will not be bullied like that.

Mind shift“I started a campaign for the lines to go

underground. I got international coverageon the dangers of overhead power lines andto cut a long story short, the resolution fromthe council was to put the lines under-ground.”

Amira also played a key role in convin-cing the city to sell land for development.The result is now the Tygerwaterfront offi-ce park and Willowbridge.

“Then I started to become involved withcommunity stuff. That is when I was appro-ached to make myself available for councilin 2006. And here I am.”

Amira just spent five years in Ward 16.“Andnow, tomovehere,where it ismain-

ly residential, is going to be a mind shift.”

But he knows the area well. “I’ve run asecurity business in Bellville for 30 yearsand then I had an investigating businessthat worked for attorneys and finance busi-nesses and I used to drive around here a lotto see clients.”

He says one of the challenges of Ward 3is service delivery.

“If the service delivery is coordinated wecan make more services available to the ra-tepayer. The area I come from has well-offpeople. There they knock down a R40m hou-se to build a R70m new house. So there theydemandservicedelivery. Peoplewant to en-

sure that the property valuesare retained.And to retain thatproperty value, you need goodservice delivery. You need tomake sure those suburbswork, are cared for. And most,if not all officials, know that. Isee myself as a coordinator.”

Getting uptodateAmira says in the weeks he

has been in office, he has beensetting up and attending mee-tings back-to-back in order to

get backgroundonanumber of issues in theward. He is also still serving on the city’sliquor licencing tribunal and attending thetask team on Table Mountain NationalPark.

He says he will continue his involvementthere.

“I am the man who started the bylaw onliquor trading hours across the city. I speakto councillors across the city, advisingthem on invitation.”

Amira says he had a very good relations-hip with the police in Sea Point and CampsBay, even in the CBD, because of the clubsand his involvement with the liquor tra-ding bylaw.

children is the reason the Moresterre-tjies pre-school principal is climbing

Kilimanjaro.Principal Sandra Wessels (32) and friend

Melinda du Plessis (39), both from Durban-ville, want to inspire farm worker’s childento follow any path they choose in life. Thefuture of these children is close to Sandra’sheart as Moresterretjies pre-school is on thefarm Morgenster outside Durbanville.

The pair are also planning on raisingenough funds to be able to cover the pre-school’s food bill for 2015.

A keen mountain biker and biathlete,Sandra got the idea to climb Kilimanjaro inDecember 2013 and when shared her dreamwithMelinda, who decided to join in the fun-

draising effort.Morêsterretjies pre-school was started by

the owner of the farm in 2009 as a way tothankGod after his sonwas cured of variousallergies. Around the same time a survey bynon-profit organisation Badisa establishedthat the greatest need among farm workerswas for pre-school stimulation for theirchildren between three and five years of age.

Sandra, a qualified educarer, joined theschool when it opened. She was assisted bythreewomen from the surrounding farms inorder to give the best possible care, educati-on and stimulation to the 22 children at theschool.

Over the past four years the little schoolhas gone from strength to strength.

The children are fed two meals a day, as

well as two snacks in between, and are caredfor and taught school readiness, hygiene, so-cial skills and Christianity.

“All of us have a mountain or more toclimb in our lives, but these kids are clim-bing a mountain like Kilimanjaro from themoment they are born.

“Nobodyexpects of themtoamount to any-thing. Most kids in these circumstances ne-ver break out of the mould imposed onthem,” said Sandra.

They decided to get the children involvedin their journey by having “training” walkswith them every month, and putting up a“visualmountain” in their school roomwiththe fundraising numbers.

“But mostly we want to demonstrate tothem that they are worth the effort and that

we will join them on this mountain that istheir lives.”

They hope to raise R5 895 for each child,inspired by the 5 895 m height of Kilimanja-ro. “We will not use the funds for the gearwewill need. A gear list is attached for spon-sorship – people are free to brand what theysponsor in any way they want.”

A very disturbing letterappeared in TygerBurger onThursday 4 June (“Deathpenalty a matter for debate”).The writer, after ranting on

about addicts asks: “Is it nottime that we reopen thediscussion around the deathpenalty?”Our country decided to

abolish the death penaltyalmost twenty years ago, notby political parties or parlia-ment, but by the ConstitutionalCourt which delivered thisdecisive verdict with a unani-mous 11-0 vote.America was not so lucky.

This superpower and all othernations where the deathpenalty is in force are the mostviolent in the world.Not a week goes past that

the news is not dominated bykillings, bombings, abductionsor other forms of violenceemanating from these coun-tries. Death penalty is a violentact and can only operate in anenvironment of fear, hatred,vengeance, racism and retribu-tion. People who constantlyadvocate reintroduction of thedeath penalty are sooner orlater going to commit violentacts themselves. Clive Derby-Lewis and his henchmanJanusz Walus are a goodexample. Friday nights onecould hear him instigatingright-wing violence on radiophone-in programmes.Where will this bloodshed

news of late is another reasonwhy the powers that be shouldchange the law and protect thedefenceless. They are abused,exploited, and cruelty is on therise.Let’s stand together and call

have SMSed the city aboutpotholes or overflowing drainsand their response has beenimmediate.One night, two weeks ago, I

informed them about a danger-ous pothole in front of myproperty and it was fixed thenext day.Whenever I have a concern I

either inform the city or myward councillor via SMS or

email. The matter is thenattended to.You will regularly spot the

city’s blue bags on the pave-ment, indicating that ourstreets were swept.Do not use Bishop Lavis as

an area where service deliveryis almost non-existent. Weshould all rather do our civicduty and report any problems,even if it’s not in our area.We tend to always point out

that we are the forgottenpeople, but are we doinganything constructive to helpmake our living conditionsbetter?

young helper Anvil to pop intothe Chinese shop for somesuperglue.He came out with an entire

card of superglues, as that washow they were sold, he wastold. There was no slip.I tried to use the superglue,

but most units were 100% dry.The rest I managed to squeezea tiny amount of liquid out of,which half fixed the small itemfor which it had been intended.This would normally take one

superglue squeeze at most, butI had to discard all the units. Ithink there were six units.It was very disappointing.No slip was given, so I didn’t

even try to take them back. Iwonder if someone tested thesuperglue in the stock at theshop?I was so angry, I threw

everything away.In retrospect, I should have

looked for an expiry date andat least gone back to tell them,but reading about Lynn’sresponse I wonder if it wouldhave mattered?

Ingevolge artikel 49(1)(a)(ii) van die Wet kan enige eiendomsbesitter of ander persoon wat wil binne die gemelde tydperk ’n beswaar bydie munisipale bestuurder indien oor enige saak wat op die waardasielys verskyn of daaruit weggelaat is. Besware kan slegs ten opsigte vaneiendomme wat op die SV04-lys gewaardeer is, ingedien word. Die eienaars van hierdie eiendomme sal skriftelik van hul SV04-waardasies inkennis gestel word by die posadres wat tans op die Stad se databasis is.

Aandag word spesifiek gevestig op die feit dat ’n beswaar ingevolge artikel 50(2) van die Wet met ’n spesifieke, individuele eiendom verbandmoet hou en nie teen die aanvullende waardasielys as ’n geheel ingedien kan word nie. Die vorms vir die indiening van besware is by die lokalehieronder genoem beskikbaar en kan van die webwerf afgelaai word. ’n Afsonderlike beswaarvorm moet vir elke eiendom ingevul word.

They’re loud, they’re heavy and they’reon mission to revive rock music.It’s been three years in the making,

but local band The Summer Undergroundwill be launching their new album DamageDone, released by WayCool Records, thisweekend.After changes to the band’s line up, they

decided to give themselves some time to getto know one another before taking on thechallenge of recording an album. But oncethey had built up a collection of work, theydecided it was time to lay down the tracks.“We eventually put some serious hours

in,” says Adrian Langeveld, the band’sdrummer who is affectionately known as“Captainno fun”. “He cracked thewhip,” ex-plains frontmanWarrenAlexander. Adriansees itmore asmaking sure everyone stayedfocused on the task at hand.“I’m sure every band worth their weight

in gold has had these situations,” guitaristLuke Revington says, referring to jugglingbetween life’s daily responsibilities and theband.

InputBut they pushed on, taking their time to

create the best possible product.“We’ve certainly survived what would ha-

ve killed many bands,” says guitarist Adamvan der Riet. The seeds for The Summer Un-derground were planted in 2000 and Adamsays the longer a band is around, the moreissues they have to deal with.Getting alongmusically is not one of those

issues though. Drawing on collective influ-ences, the band’s song writing process is aseamless one, with Adam feeding ideas tothe rest of the bandwho thenadd their input.Luke, Adrian and bassist Brett Reynolds puttheir own touches to the songs with their in-struments, while Warren is responsible forlyrics.“Adamwill wake up at three o clock in the

morning with an idea and put it down,”Adrian says,whileAdamadds that everyonehas free reign to adapt the song as theywant.

Warren says the music dictates the moodof the song, but lyrics can quickly changethat.When asked to describe Damage Done,

Adrian says “it’s a heavy, stomping rock al-bum”.“There’s nothing like us, certainly not in

this country,” Adam points out.With elements of punk, rock and metal,

the album carries a melodic edge, while stillbeing “hard”.“Writing songs is still paramount. All the

bands we love are known for writing classicsongs,” says Adam.The band hopes that the new album will

inspire a rock revival in South Africa.“There’s a lot of fake stuff out there,”

Adam says. “Rock ‘n Roll has run out of ide-as, and that’s why it’s become stale,” headds.“I think a lot of people in bands have for-

gotten how to have fun,” says Luke.One thing this band is serious about

though, is embracing digital platforms asthey move into new territory.“This CD is basically our farewell salute

to theCD,”Adamsays, pointing out thatCDsare a dying medium, with fewer and fewerplaces left to sell your product.The band will be selling Damage Done

mostly at their shows, but they will also bemaking it available digitally on online sto-res like Amazon and iTunes.Fans can pick up a copy of the album at

UWC boxers off to national champs

Sinethemba Blom (red) won gold in the Western Cape Boxing championships.

Two UWC boxers have secured their tic-kets to the SouthAfricanNational Box-ing championships after winning their

final bouts in the Western Cape BoxingChampionships held on 7 June.

Sinethemba Blom and Nwabisa Tom bothreceived gold medals, while their teammateSandiso Kota had to settle for bronze afterhe was beaten in the semi-final.

Blom and Tom will travel to East Londonnext month for the national championships,with a goal of getting a place on the SouthAfrican team that will go to the World Box-ing Championships.

OutclassedAt a packed Vuyiseka Community Hall in

Philippi on 7 June, Blom outclassed LungaStemela in what was named the Bout of theTournament to win the light welterweightdivision,while Tomwent through on awalk-over after she didn’t get an opponent in thelight middleweight division.

It was the third time that Blom, a secondyear BA student, beat Stemela in as manybouts this year, and said he was very happy

about the win as he had trained hard for thetournament.

The bigger picture for him nowwas a goldmedal at the national championships, some-thing that has eluded him in the past.

“I’ve always lost in the semi-finals orquar-terfinals, but this year I want to go all theway,” an ecstatic Blom commented.

NervousTom, who is graduating with a BCom in

September, said shewas happy to qualify forthe national championships, but was ner-vous because of going to the national eventwithout fighting.

“Fights would have given me an opportu-nity to test myself so I can improve going tothe nationals. I’m aiming for gold and I’mtraining every day to be ready.”

UWC coach Ginger Mapasa noted that theWestern Cape tournament was very toughand congratulated his boxers for their achie-vements, saying it shows the good work thatthe club is doing. The aim now, he said, wasfor his team to do well in the national cham-pionships andmake the SouthAfrican team.

After a strong start to the 2014 season, SouthAfrica’s Richard Murray from Durbanvilleis a serious contender for amedal at the 2014Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The triathlon is on Thursday 24 July. TheGames start on 23 July and the final day is3 August.

Sascoc announced that Murray, HenriSchoeman,WianSullwald,KateRoberts andGillian Sanders have all been chosen to re-present the country in triathlon.

An initial squad of 155 of the country’s fi-nest athletes in over 15 sporting codes fromaquatics to wrestling has been named.

Murray is currently fourth in the worldrankings behind Javier Gomez from Spain,Jonathan Brownlee from Britain and Mario

Mola also from Spain. Of these three onlyBrownlee will be in action. But Murray hasbeaten both JonathanandAlistairBrownleemore than once this season.

Murray has already represented hiscountry on the big stage at the 2012 LondonOlympicGames, where he finished 17th. Ali-stair won gold and Jonathan bronze.

“I really believe I can win a medal at theCommonwealth Games, but we need a planto be implemented from the South Africanteam. The success of the five-weekBrutal FruitNetball Cup will be put to the test thisweek when the SPAR national netball

team play a three-test series against Scot-land in Cape Town.The tests will be played at the Velodrome

in Bellville on consecutive days, between 19and 21 June.“It is a very opportune time for us to play

this series,” saidNetball SouthAfrica (NSA)President Mimi Mthethwa.“We have just finished the Brutal Fruit

Netball Cup, and this series gives us a chan-ce to see how the players have progressed.Also, with the Commonwealth Games inGlasgow in July - our big focus for this year- we will be able to try out the team and see

Phumza was outstanding for the Sout-hern Stings, who won all their matches, andwhat I love about Fifi is that she trains everyday against Chante Steyn at the NorthernFlames, and that will help us when we meetthose huge Jamaicans at the Commonwe-alth Games.”Steyn, at 195 centimetres, was one of the

tallest and most solid players in the BrutalFruit Netball Cup.The team to play against Scotland will to

a large extent be the team thatwill representSouth Africa at the Commonwealth Games.Scotland are ranked 13th by the Internati-

onal Netball Federation, while South Africaare ranked sixth.

Commonwealth groupingsThe two teams are in different pools at the

Commonwealth Games, with Scotland co-ming up against New Zealand, Jamaica, Ma-lawi, Northern Ireland and St Lucia, whileSouth Africa are grouped with Australia,England, Wales, Trinidad and Tobago, Bar-bados.“If wewin all three Tests against Scotland,

we will move up to fifth in the world ran-kings,” said Kotze.Tickets for the Scotland series are availa-

ble at the Velodrome. They cost R20, and R10for children under 13.
