“As jy in sulke omstandighede is, wees pa-raat.

Hul nalatigheid omhulperseel veilig temaak is kommerwekkend,”sê sy.

It seems the City of Cape Town is in nohurry to finalise an agreement for theopening of the new R4 million Early

Childhood Development (ECD) centre inBoy Briers Avenue, Fisantekraal.

The facility, which can accommodate 165children from infants to Grade R, was theresult of a successful partnership betweenfour major companies in the Western Capeand the Garden Cities Archway Founda-tion.

But, seven months after the official hand-over to the City in February, it is still empty.

Although an operator was already noti-fied of her appointment earlier, the City hasup to now not come to light with the signingof any agreement.

New operator not contacted yetThe appointment of Monica Abrahams,

chairperson of the Fisantekraal Crèche Fo-rum, has been recommended for approvalat the monthly meeting of subcouncil 7(Koeberg) on 24 August.

Now, almost three weeks later, Abrahamshas not been contacted by anyone yet re-garding an agreement.

More than 40 children, of whom mosthave never been in a crèche before, arealready enrolled for the new crèche, saysAbrahams.

“The parents are very eager and have ar-rived with their children at the crèche at thebeginning of September last week,” shesays. The City previously stated they hopethe crèche would be operational by earlySeptember.

More than 40 children still waitingAccording to Abrahams she is just wait-

ing for the City to come forward so that shecan sign the agreement for her as operator.“I don’t know what to tell the parents any-more,” she said.

In the meantime the more than 40 chil-dren are without a facility, she says. Theovergrown grass has also been cut, but fur-ther, not a word from the City...

On enquiry about the delay, SuzetteLittle, mayoral committee member for so-cial development and early childhood devel-opment, only said the agreement will besigned soon. “The ECD centre will openafter the signing,” she stated.

The City’s media office informed Tyger-Burger that the project manager is awayfrom work due to a death in the family.

Still no hurry to openR4m ECD centre

Labels belong on cans, not on humans. These were the words of Lizelle van Wyk,

CEO of the Cape Town Society for the Blind(CTSB) in Salt River, addressing women ata Women’s Month event at the society’spremises.

Van Wyk said blind people shouldn’t bedefined by their disability because theyhave more to offer.

Though the month to celebrate womenhas come and gone, CTSB has so much workto do. They are aiming to generate R20mover the next two years to help visually im-paired people to do different things, VanWyk said.

Part of the CTSB’s vision is to empowerthe more than one million visually im-paired people in South Africa to become rec-ognised, tax-paying, high-performingachievers and unlock employment opportu-nities.

Helen Zille, premier of the Western Cape, and Natalie Maimane, wife of national DAleader Mmusi Maimane, were among the260 guests who attended the event. JennyMorris, a celebrity chef and radio personali-ty, was the master of ceremonies.

Van Wyk said: “The organisation is con-stantly confronted with social issues likestigmatisation and stereotypes that chal-lenge their efforts to seek employment op-portunities for blind people. Labels belongon cans, not on humans. We must be thechange agents that inspire transformation.CTSB will have to work harder and smarterin order to ensure sustainable income.”

Zille said parents who rose above theenormous difficulties to overcome sufferingwere an important ingredient in buildingcommunities.

Maimane applauded the CTSB’s work.“Organisations like this give blind people

their own voice and generate a platform forthe visually impaired to put their issues onthe table,”she said.

Wheelbarrows full of plastic bottles, shreds of snipped or shaped plasticbags, and sand. Add some elbow

grease, and you have a school.Well, sort of.These were the “ingredients” used by

workers at the Metro Evangelical Servi-ces’s (MES) office in Bellville up to last Fri-day, to help a local church build a schoolin the missionary village of Greyton.Yvette Conradie of MES heard the Bell-

ville Presbyterian Church was planning tobuild a school using entirely recycledmate-rial, so she offered the clients at MES’s of-fice an opportunity: Help make the eco

bricks needed, and get a daily freemeal andcoffee out of the deal.“I just felt we needed to give the clients

something todoand tokeep themout ofmis-chief, while helping others and the environ-ment. With this project, we were trying toeducate them about plastic disposal.”Yvette said the project ran for three

months.“The project was to be finished by Sep-

tember when the church will take all thebottles to Greyton – it’s a ‘nine-eleven’project,” she laughed. The bricks are made of two-litre plastic

bottles filled to the brimwith pieces of plas-tic waste and sometimes sand, which wereall pressed deeply into the bottle usingsticks.“You can find all sorts of information

about the bricks on the internet. It’s reallyinteresting how they put it all together.“But I have to say: It requires a lot of el-

bow grease to get the plastic in there andmake the bricks really strong, then to fillit with sand.”She said the workers brought the bottles

to the centre filled, using wheelbarrows. Then they continued working in a specialspace thatwas created for the project on theMES grounds.“At first I had seven workers – everyone

was excited about putting the plastic intothe bottles. Then we had four, and I endedup with a team of just two workers. It is un-derstandable, because it was really hard toget the plastic to fit and it hurt their hands,”she said. The workers were rewarded daily with a

meal voucher for a free lunch and a cup ofcoffee when they returned the next morn-ing to finish off theworkday ending at 16:00.“I’m not sure how many bricks were cre-

ated altogether, but I doknowwe tookmanyblack bags filled with bricks over to thechurch...”

Charlie Charlie nipped in the budEARL HAUPT

@earlhaupt

Schools across the city have been mobil-ised to nip the not-so-latest occult crazebeginning to mushroom across the

country, in the bud.The “Charlie Charlie” game has had many

parents wondering what can be done in or-der to prevent their children from being ex-posed to its nature, while others have contin-ued to view it as harmless fun conjured upthrough the vibrant minds of youth.

A host of local schools have reported in-stances where children have been found tobe playing the game, with some fortunatelygoing on to say that they have brought anend to the activity before losing control ofthe situation.

“We have nipped it in the bud,” said an un-named source at one of the schools.

“We had children come to us to say thattheir fellow learners have stopped playingthe game after telling them about it beforewe addressed them about the issue.”

Despite the dangers or even non-dangerswhich may exist, the fact that children havetaken to “Charlie Charlie” indicates that al-ternative activities need to be sought in or-der to cultivate a more harmonious environ-ment for children to interact in.

The game was originally played by Span-ish speaking girls as a way to “enquire”which boy may like them, but the game hassince reincarnated itself in 2015 and hasgone viral in the form of the “Charlie Charliechallenge”. This occurred when English-speaking youth adapted the paper-and-pen-cil game after a video displaying the gamewas posted on Twitter under the hash tag#CharlieCharlieChallenge.

The video was originally intended to behumorous, but has since evolved into some-thing more taboo.

The Western Cape Education De-partment said the public should becareful when dealing with incidentsof the nature of Charlie Charlie.

“Children should be encouragedto discuss any ‘uncomfortable’ feel-ings about the incident with theirteachers, who could then initiateprocedures for the proper therapeu-tic response processes. Actual in-stances of bullying or coercioncould certainly have negative ef-fects on the child, but early identifi-cation and effective interventioncan ameliorate the initial effects aswell as the long-term consequen-ces.”

The WCED also outlines that pro-visions have been made in the cur-riculum to teach children to makemore informed decisions and equipthem with the knowledge of theirrights.

“Regular playground supervisionby educators would also go a longway to curtailing such activitiesand it is also important for parentsto communicate continually withtheir children and to discuss all thegrowth and developmental issues aswell as any situations arising fromspecific incidents at schools.”

Manenberg police spokespersonLieutenant Ian Bennett maintainedthat although schools in the area have re-ported instances of the game being played,it points to a bigger problem within commu-nities.

“People forget how powerful young peopleare. This is a case where there is nothing(spiritual) happening in schools. Therefore, there is no form of moral understanding inplace and young people go in search of some-thing new and exciting because they become

bored with the day-to-day things in life,”said Bennett.

He went onto say that the mainstream me-dia are partly to blame for the notoriety ofthe game, which has only stirred the excite-ment within children to start experimentingwith it.

“Children are curious beings; they wantto find things out when they are at schooland are experimenting with them all the

time.”“We as adults need to channel

children’s energy. That energyneeds to be conducted and chan-nelled into something good. Theyhave a rightful place in our societyand we need to ensure that theyhave a special place in our commu-nity.”

Warren Rossiter (Hazendal Pri-mary) is aware that regardless ofthe activity the children involvethemselves with, they are con-stantly creating awareness withtheir children regarding the conse-quences of following mass hyste-ria. They urged parents to encour-age their children to partake inpositive activities as well as in-volving themselves more in theirchildren’s lives.

“Many of the things that the chil-dren bring to school, they learn inthe streets; in their neighbour-hoods. It spreads through theschools and then it goes back againinto their respective neighbour-hoods. We are reaching out to par-ents, because we don’t have a suffi-cient involvement of parents.

“It is only in crisis times that theparents areveryconcerned, butweneed an ongoing support and un-derstanding from the side of par-

ents to make more time for their children.I know parents are tired when they comefrom work. Often it is single parent familiesor both parents are working, but they haveto make time for their children because theyneed that quality time. We are trying to en-courage that among families. We have a veryclose and immediate contact with the child, but we don’t always have that close commu-nication with the parent.”

En dít was ook goed so, want ’n halfuur

ThempieChristi vertel: “Hier komso ’n outjie inge-

stap. Hy’t ’n netjies T-hempie aanmet sulkegespierde bene.

Christi en Heidi se kollegas by ’n susters-handelaar.

had.

van man of kreef is nie, vra Christi vir Hei-di: “Dink jy ons is ‘gevat’? Toe bel ons (hulkollega) en hy bevestig toe daar was nie-mand van dié aard by hom nie.“Ek raak nie maklik van my geld ontslae

nie,” sê Christi. Daarom waarsku hy nouander.Die Bellville-polisie het bevestig daar is

nie so ’n saak by hulle geopen nie.“Dis die eerste keer dat dié spesifieke

slenter by ons uitkom.

Readers declare war against taxisDESIRÉE RORKE

@dezzierorke

A “reign of terror”, “anarchy”, a“growing epidemic of lawless in-vaders”and“absolute lawlessness”

are but a few of the terms used by fed-upmotorists to describe the general behav-iour of taxi drivers in the northern sub-urbs.

In response to an article published inlast week’s edition (“City to get tough ontaxis”), dozens of readers responded withstrongly worded letters pleading with lo-cal and regional authorities to intervenespeedily.

The story referred to local city council-lor Roxanne Hoorn, who two weeks agobrought a motion to the City’s transportauthority to strategise plans to protectother road users from reckless taxi driv-ers after yet another serious incident.

Hoorn herself was recently the victimof intimidation, nearly assaulted aftershe was forced to overtake a taxi on OldPaarl Road between Brackenfell andKraaifontein.

Taxi nightmareThe following are excerpts from some

of these letters:Hennie Cloete says the route on Old

Paarl Road between Kraaifontein andBellville is a nightmare.

“The public has complained about thisad naseum, but nothing gets done. I’mhappy to hear that Ms Hoorn escaped in-jury, but why must a city councillor firstbecome a victim before the issue is putunder the spotlight?” he says.

Lean Sadie, from Bonnie Brae in Kraai-

fontein, says she is sick and tired of thecontinuing lawlessness of taxi drivers.

“Theyblatantlydisregard the rules andsafety of all other roadusers. Taxi ownersshould drive their own taxis. This waythe owner can be the only responsibleperson and therefore be more carefulwith his very expensive vehicle.”

She makes no bones when she says:“The powers that be should grow a back-bone and be more vigilant with traffic of-fenders, especially drivers in possessionof a Public Drivers’ Permit.

“We need more traffic officers doing re-al traffic work and not sitting behindspeeding cameras. We need traffic offi-cers that continuously hold roadblockschecking vehicle roadworthiness and en-forcing the rules of the road. We are tax-payers and we demand that the powersthat be ... do what they are paid to do.”

Ian Coetzee feels it’s imperative for thecommunity to unite against the mayhemcaused by taxi drivers.

“Not longafter the saddeathof a daugh-ter of our community (in Brackenfell), weare back in the rat race with only a faintmemory of that terrible morning.

“Motorists are being blamed for racingdown Frans Conradie (Road), where per-manent speeding cameras are expected toregulate driving behaviour ... while taxidrivers are given a free pass to dowhatev-er they feel right in order to perform their‘service’ to commuters,” he says.

“No respect is shown for other motor-ists, or even pedestrians, and when youtry to ‘correct’ them, theybecomeviolent, swinging their arms and swearing at youwhile your children are in the car.

“When is the City’s Law Enforcement

going to clamp down on this?” he asks.Juliet Luthango from Kuils River, who

uses Van Riebeeck Road on a daily basis, says she is happy that something mightfinally be done to reign in taxi driverswho without regard to the law have “tak-en the roads for themselves.”

Amanda Smith says what happened toHoorn, must have happened to herselfabout 10 times already.

“The worst was when I was with myson. I can tell you with no hesitation thatif I (didn’t have a child in the car), I wouldhave done something that I would haveregretted terribly.

“Please, please, please, for the upteenthtime, stop these these taxi drivers whoare giving all a bad name!” she says.

ChantelleMinnaar suggests that trafficofficers be deployed on Old Paarl Roadduring peak hours, and Mariethie Hay-ley, who has used Old Paarl Road for thelast 15 years, agrees with her.

“The taxis are a major problem in theKraaifontein area, especially on OldPaarl Road turning into Northpine,” shewrites.

“They just burst in front of you to turnright into Northpine Drive, coming fromthe lane next to you, and there are neverany cops around,” says Minnaar.

OneLynette fromBrackenfell, who reg-ularly uses the route, saysOldPaarl Roadis very risky and not a pleasant drivingexperience.

“You never know when you will be thenext victim of road rage, but you expectit at all times,” she says.

She adds that most female drivers, es-pecially those with a child in the car, must have felt intimidated or threatened

at one time or another.“I have been in a situation more than

once where I had to violate the rules ofthe road in order to ‘accommodate’ aruthless taxi driver.”

Often overloadedOne L. Cloete agrees:“I drive on Old Paarl Road daily on my

way to work and you battle to keep calmbehind the steering wheel.

“What happened to councillor Hoorn isexactly what happens daily on this road.Commuters are forced to use taxis and donot have a choice.

“They cannot make use of trains, be-cause the trains are constantly late andovercrowded,” she says.

Taxi commuter Amanda Gerds fromBellville adds that taxis are often over-loaded.

“At the Bellville taxi rank, the ‘peoplein charge’ threaten you with your life orshout other obscenities.

“We once commuted in a taxi in whichthey used chipboard to cover a hole in thefloor so that you don’t fall through.”

She reckons the traffic department is“useless” when it comes to clampingdown on dangerous and reckless taxidrivers.

“Theyneedundercover traffic cops androadblocks. The taxi drivers become clev-er and do their best to avoid gettingstopped.”

Marietjie Haye sums it up aptly whenshe says: “As taxpayers who pay the sala-ries of traffic officers and Law Enforce-ment (officers), we demand help from thegovernment that we voted into power inthe Western Cape.”

DESIRÉE RORKE@dezzierorke

Brett Herron, mayoral committee mem-ber for Transport for Cape Town (TCT),the City’s transport authority, on Fridayannounced the City has established adedicated Transport Enforcement Unit(TEU) within the City’s directorate forsafety and security.

This announcement comes in thewakeof amotionmadeby local councillorRox-anne Hoorn for the City to clamp downon taxi drivers endangering the lives ofother road users.

“The City’s transport authority is wellaware of the need for a more focusedstrategy in addressing the issues Hoornmentions in the motion,” he said in astatement to TygerBurger.

Herron says the proposed unit is in theprocess of being adequately resourcedwith additional law enforcement offi-cials and the necessary technology to en-sure its efficiency.

“If all goes according to plan, this newunit should be deployed onto the City’sroads by October,” he says.

The TEU will focus on public trans-port, in particular

operators without operating licences, operators who are contravening theterms of their operating licences, mini-bus taxis and private cars using the redMyCiTi lanes, as well as motorists whouse the bus and minibus taxi lanes on theN2 freeway during the peak-hour peri-ods.

The unit will initially consist of 136 of-ficials from the existing enforcementunits.

“Apart from the 136 officials, it is pro-posed that an additional 20 traffic offi-cers be appointed to support the publictransport system, including the removalof the large number of illegal taxis that

are currently operating on MyCiTiroutes and depriving the City of much-needed income,” he says.

The Transport Enforcement (TE)branch situated within TCT will, togeth-er with the TEU, determine, monitor andreview the tasks to be performed by theunit.

“The TE branch will use business in-telligence such as accident data, surveysof the regulation department, com-plaints about the MyCiTi service andother relevant statistics to determine theTEU’s priorities, as well as where andhow the officials of the unit should be de-ployed in order to best serve its transportenforcement mandate,” he says.

Herron is of the opinion that the for-mation of the TEU will enhance the safe-ty, security and reliability of publictransport and will reduce road acci-dents, deaths and injuries.

“I am confident that the new model fortransport enforcement will pay off verysoon, and that this unit will make a sig-nificant difference to minibus-taxi driv-er behaviour, speeding and general law-lessness,” concluded Herron.

JP Smith, mayoral committee memberfor safety and security, added that taxisdisregarding the provisions of the Na-tional Traffic Act, is a problem all overthe city.

“The City’s Traffic Service conductsenforcement operations in as many are-as as possible, including in the Kraaifon-tein and Brackenfell areas. However, given our finite resources, we are notable to be everywhere all of the time,” hesaid in response to a TygerBurgermediaenquiry.

“Our enforcement efforts include issu-ing fines for transgressions in terms ofthe National Road Traffic Act. Our offi-cers regularly impound the vehicles incontravention of permit conditions.”

streek beroof van hul swaarverdiende gelden pensioengeld van skoonfamilie by dietaxi-staanplek in Durbanville.Sowat R3 700 kontant en ’n Samsung-sel-

foon is geroof.Volgens lt. kol Marius Swanepoel van die

Durbanville-polisie is dit ’n ou truuk watnouweer inDurbanville kopuitgesteekhet.Martha (50) Swarts en haar man, Benja-

min (44), vanFisantekraal, het verledeDon-derdag omstreeks 12:00 hulmaandelikse in-kopies by Shoprite in Durbanville gaandoen.

must pick up the money”. Dis toe dat hy sê‘don’t go to the office, I will shoot you’.

toe sê hy vir my ‘You must keep quiet, I’llshoot you’,” het sy aan TygerBurger vertel.

Haar man het toe nader gehard-loop.

hul huis in Fisantekraal.Lt. kol.

living in D’urbanvale for 9years, my heart breaks everyday since the decision wasmade to plough up and destroythe incredibly beautiful hill ofClara Annafontein on theVissershok Road, to make wayfor hundreds of units – thisafter years of debate andmoney spent on court casesinitiated by the people of thearea who care and see thedevastation this will cause tothe area. All this beauty, withthe wildebeest and buck grazingon the land and the ostrichesenjoying the freedom to laytheir eggs under the old bluegums, will soon be a thing ofthe past, never to be reclaimedby the wild birds and otherlittle creatures whose home thishas been for many generations.Sadly a hill of bricks is what itwill all be replaced with! Our little bit of Durbanville

beauty on our wine route willbe gridlocked with morningtraffic with the influx of somany more vehicles on thiscountry road, together with thedust, the trucks and the noisefor probably years to come.So for those that are hell bent

Schools nipping “Charlie” in budEARL HAUPT

@earl haupt

Schools across the city have beenmobil-ised to nip the not-so-latest occult crazebeginning to mushroom across the

country, in the bud.The “Charlie Charlie” gamehas hadmany

parents wondering what can be done in or-der to prevent their children from being ex-posed to its nature, while othershave contin-ued to view it as harmless fun conjured upthrough the vibrant minds of youth.A host of local schools have reported in-

stances where children have been found tobe playing the game, with some fortunatelygoing on to say that they have brought anend to the activity before losing control ofthe situation.“Wehave nipped it in the bud,” said an un-

named source at one of the schools.“We had children come to us to say that

their fellow learners have stopped playingthe game after telling them about it beforewe addressed them about the issue.”Despite the dangers or even non-dangers

which may exist, the fact that children havetaken to “Charlie Charlie” indicates that al-ternative activities need to be sought in or-der to cultivate amore harmonious environ-ment for children to interact in.The game was originally played by Span-

ish speaking girls as a way to “enquire”which boy may like them, but the game hassince reincarnated itself in 2015 and hasgoneviral in the formof the “CharlieCharliechallenge”. This occurred when English-speaking youth adapted the paper-and-pen-cil game after a video displaying the gamewas posted on Twitter under the hash tag#CharlieCharlieChallenge. The video was originally intended to be

humorous, but has since evolved in-to something more taboo. The Western Cape Education De-

partment said the public should becareful when dealingwith incidentsof the nature of Charlie Charlie.“Children should be encouraged

to discuss any ‘uncomfortable’ feel-ings about the incident with theirteachers, who could then initiateprocedures for the proper therapeu-tic response processes. Actual in-stances of bullying or coercioncould certainly have negative ef-fects on the child, but early identifi-cation and effective interventioncan ameliorate the initial effects aswell as the long-term consequen-ces.”The WCED also outlines that pro-

visions have been made in the cur-riculum to teach children to makemore informed decisions and equipthem with the knowledge of theirrights.“Regular playground supervision

by educators would also go a longway to curtailing such activitiesand it is also important for parentsto communicate continually withtheir children and to discuss all thegrowth and developmental issues aswell as any situations arising fromspecific incidents at schools.”Manenberg police spokesperson Lieuten-

ant Ian Bennett maintained that althoughschools in the area have reported instancesof the gamebeingplayed, it points to a biggerproblem within communities.“People forget how powerful young people

are. This is a case where there is nothing(spiritual) happening in schools. Therefore, there is no form of moral understanding inplace and young people go in search of some-

thing newand exciting because they becomebored with the day-to-day things in life,”said Bennett. He went onto say that themainstream media are partly to blame forthe notoriety of the game, which has onlystirred the excitement within children tostart experimenting with it.

“Children are curious beings; they wantto find things out when they are at schooland are experimenting with them all the

time.”“We as adults need to channel

children’s energy. That energyneeds to be conducted and chan-nelled into something good. Theyhave a rightful place in our societyand we need to ensure that theyhave a special place in our commu-nity.”Warren Rossiter (Hazendal Pri-

mary) is aware that regardless ofthe activity the children involvethemselves with, they are con-stantly creating awareness withtheir children regarding the conse-quences of following mass hyste-ria. They urged parents to encour-age their children to partake inpositive activities as well as in-volving themselves more in theirchildren’s lives.“Many of thethings that the children bring toschool, they learn in the streets; intheir neighbourhoods. It spreadsthrough the schools and then itgoes back again into their respec-tive neighbourhoods. We arereaching out to parents, becausewe don’t have a sufficient involve-ment of parents.“It is only in crisis times that the

parents areveryconcerned, butweneed an ongoing support and un-derstanding from the side of par-

ents to make more time for their children.I know parents are tired when they comefrom work. Often it is single parent familiesor both parents are working, but they havetomake time for their children because theyneed that quality time. We are trying to en-courage that among families. We have aclose and immediate contact with the child, but we don’t always have that close commu-nication with the parent.”

Becoming an artist was a “no-brainer”for Eversdal’s Ruan Huisamen.

“I’d be rubbish at almost anythingelse,” says the 24-year-old, who is the onlyNorthern Suburbs artist to be chosen as aTop 40 finalist for this year’s prestigious San-lam Portrait Awards.

His charcoal and pastel on paper pieceMandi will be on display at the Rust-en-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville with anothertop 40 portraits until Thursday 8 October be-fore finalists’ pieces go on tour around thecountry.

Despite its incredible detail, Ruan saysMandi was actually “a bit of a rush job”. Heworked all night to finish the piece on time.

“I finished this work four hours before thecompetition closed.”

His subject for Mandi is Mindisa Ngqu-lana, who works at a gallery in the CBD.

Although he always knew he wanted to bea professional artist, Ruan chose not to studyart after matriculating from DurbanvilleHigh School, as he feels the current tertiaryenvironment creates “jacks of all trades, butmasters of none.”Instead he spent hours refining his skills

on his own. “From a young age I’ve had atendency to try and create work as realisti-cally or believable as possible.”

This was something he realised whilestudying visual arts in high school. He wasonly 17 when he took highest honours andthe winner’s trophy at the Tygerberg Eist-eddfod.

The decision to pursue a career in artmeant not havingmuchof a social life forRu-an, who even spent his break times at schoolhoninghis craft. Through the internet, he be-came aware of artists as young as 13 whowere producing brilliant work, and thatpushed him to practice.

His first foray into the professional artworld came in 2009 when he entered the na-tional Sanlam Vuleka Art Competition. From there he startedworking on commis-

sions, which afforded him the opportunity to

further refine his technique.Initially, Ruan worked mostly with graph-

ite, but a chance meeting with artist LouisJansen van Vuuren at an exhibition in Stel-lenbosch put him on the road to charcoal.Louis invited him to be his apprentice in

France for three months, and a short whilelater he found himself on his way to Chateaua Creuzette in Boussac.Ruan describes the experience as “surre-

al”.The two engaged in spirited debates about

techniques and styles, but ultimately Louishelped Ruan move from pencil to charcoal,a medium he had been wary of.

“I thought it was an indomitable medium. It was powder; it was messy.”With Louis’ guidance however, Ruanmas-

tered the craft and his first charcoal draw-

ing, an A3 drawing of his mother’s eye, wassold to a collector in London. His first portrait piece was a self-portrait

which won him a top 10 place in the AbsaL’Atelier competition. He was also a finalistin the 2013 Sanlam Portrait Awards.Ruan says competitions like this offer a

rare opportunity for artists in South Africato gain exposure and entering the artmarketin general. It also offers artists the chance to network

with other similar artists.“There aren’t really a lot of downsides.”

V For more information about Ruan or his art, visitwww.rh-art.co.za or www.facebook.com/RuanHuis-amenArt. His work is also on display at The Galleryat Grande Provence in Franschhoek. Visit www.rust-en-vrede.com for more about the Sanlam PortraitAwards.

Near the city, yet far enough from theurban hustle, Blowfish Restaurant inBlouberg offers the perfect function

venue.Family and friends joined me for what

could be the best birthday dinner of my life.It was simple yet chic – I was planning tothrow a big 30th birthday bash, but at thelastminute decided to go for amore intimateand elegant dinner party. This turned out tobe a great decision.

I was referred to the venue by a friend anduponbookinga complimentary consultationwith Werner, the resident event planner, hejoked that they were made to entertain. Headded that the restaurantwas a popular ven-ue for events like birthday dinners, engage-ment parties, staff functions and weddings.

Situated at the landmark Dolphin BeachHotel, Blowfish Restaurant was the perfectsetting for my special day – postcard viewsof the city skyline, awarmambience and ele-gant décor. Our party of 12 was seated atfloor-to-ceiling windows overlooking TableMountain and we enjoyed amajestic sunset.

Dinnerwas a two-course setmenu, includ-ing fusion sushi as starters and generousseafood platters as our main course.

The food was reasonably priced and we

were served hearty portions. The location, the setting, and the VIP treatment gave methe sense that the event was going to costmean arm and a leg, but a two-course meal ispriced at R129, while a three-course mealwas priced at R159.Greatwine, good food, great company, and

tons of fun amid the crisp scent of the sea.Needless to say, I highly recommend thisrestaurant.V Contact Blowfish Restaurant on 021 556 5464 oremail [email protected] to book yournext celebration.

Luca Filippi (Milnerton), Herman Loub-ser and Luke Mayo gave South Africangolf fans cause for celebration with a

hat-trick of top 10 finishes in the ninth editi-on at Golf Club Bielle in Italy last week.

Riccardo Leo secured a fifth victory forItaly in the Reply Italian International u.16championship.

Loubser, from Boland, finished fourth onone-under-par 291, while Mayo, fromKwaZulu-Natal, andWestern Province’sFilippi tied for se-venth on 294.

Loubser, fromTheewaterskloof,carded rounds of74, 75, 69 and 73,Mayo, from MountEdgecombe, returnedrounds of 72, 74, 75 and73 and Filippi scored74, 76, 74 and 70.

This marks the firsttime that three SouthAfrican juniors finis-hed in the top 10 sincethe Italian Internatio-nal u.16 championshiplaunched in 2007.

“It really is a remarka-ble accomplishment,”said South African GolfAssociation golf integra-tion manager and teammanager, Eden Thomp-son.

“Haydn Porteous won this event in2008, Tristen Strydom tied for se-cond in 2011 and Haydn, YubinYung and Kyle McClatchie were

joint third in 2008, 2007 and 2013 respective-ly.

“Over the last eight years, we had fourpairs who finished in the top 10, but this isthe first time three of our juniors managedthis rare feat.”

Thompson said the trio were determinedto better their debut performances in 2014and delivered on their promise.

“Luca tied for 11th last year, but HermanandLukebothmissed the cut. They returnedwith great attitudes and a lot of resolve. Theguys all knuckled down in the final roundand tried to get everything from the course, even if at times to their own detriment.

“Herman, Luke, Luca and ourfourth player, Wilco Nienaber,

displayed fantastic camarade-rie and sportsmanship, andalthough Wilco missed the cut

in his first start here in Italy, hewas unwavering in his supportin the third round and even car-ried Herman’s bag in the final

round.“All four players represented

South Africa, SAGA and their fa-milies with distinction and Icongratulate them.”

Leo carded rounds of 70, 71,72 and 72 and claimed a fourstroke victory over ViktorHagborg-Asp from Swedento lift the Teodoro SoldatiTrophywith awinning sco-re of seven-under-par 285.
