Om ’n sopkombuis te bedryf of nie, enwaar? Die antwoord op dié sensitiewetameletjie word tans deur die Durban-

ville-kerke, Kaapse stadsraad en ander rol-spelers oorweeg.

Dié interkerklike sopkombuis wat sedertAugustus 2013 bedryf is vanuit ’n skeeps-vraghouer op die terrein van die NG KerkDurbanville op die hoek van Kerkstraat enHoofweg (oorkant die Palmgrove-winkel-sentrum), is sedert 7 April tydelik gesluit.

Dié kwessie het tweespalt in die Durban-ville-gemeenskap van groepe wat óf daar-voor óf daarteen gekant is.

Die sopkombuis is vir ’n proefperiode vantwee tot drie maande deur die kerke gesluitna ’n vergadering in Maart van alle rolspe-lers ná klagtes oor asosiale gedrag van diestraatmense wat die sopkombuis besoek.

HawelosesDie straatmense het glo in die openbaar

urineer op die kerkperseel, wat reg langs dieLaerskool Durbanville geleë is – soms tenaanskoue van die leerders.

Daar was ook klagtes van ontlasting watsoggens verwyder moes word nadat van diehaweloses by die kerk begin oornag het.Daar was ook ’n voorval waar twee hawelo-ses vroegoggend gemeenskap daar naby ge-had het.

Hulle het ook bedags in die omgewingrondgeslenter en ouers wat hul kinders bydie skool kom haal, lastig geval, lui van dieklagtes.

Inwoners van die Aandblom-woonbuurthet egter die sluiting van die sopkombuis

verwelkom. Louis Storm, ook lid van dieRace Course-buurtwag, het gesê daar wasbyna geen voorvalle vandat die sopkombuisgesluit is nie.

“Dit sal nooit heeltemal verdwyn nie,maar daar was ’n merkbare afname,” het hygesê.

Hy was veral gekant daarteen dat die ha-welosemense toegelaat is omopdie kerkper-seel te oornag.

“Hulle gebruik die kerkperseel vir hul toi-let en was hulself poedelnakend by ’n kraan– dít terwyl onderwyseresse van die skoolverbystap.”

BedelVolgens hom bedel die hawelowe mense

nie net nie,maar raak hulle soms aggressief.“Daar was ten minste een voorval waar

een ’n buurtwaglid met ’n skerpgemaaktevoorwerp gedreig het,” het hy gesê.

Ds. André van Wyk van die NG Kerk Dur-banville het gesê die sopkombuis is vir ’nproefperiode gesluit om vas te stel wat dieeffek daarvan is.

“Die laaste ete aan die straatmense is opPaasmaandag bedien. Al die lidkerke vandie sopkombuis is in gesprek met die Stadoor die pad vorentoe,” het hy gesê.

“Dis vir onshartseer,want onshet ’n goeieverhouding met van die straatmense opge-bou. Hulle sukkel.

“Die saak het twee kante: hulle is ófmensewat asosiale gedrag toon, óf hulle is ’n pro-bleem waarvan ontslae geraak moet word.Die kerk se rol sal altyd wees om straatmen-se as mense te sien en te behandel, maar onsmoet dit ook verantwoordelik doen,” het hygesê.

Die doel was om die geboute omskep in ’n toilet vir gestremdes as deelvan ’n algehele opknappingsprojek van dietaxi-staanplek, en ook om ’n raadskantoorin te rig waar met taxi-eienaars vergaderkan word om dispute en konflik op te los.Van die kerklede betrokke by die sopkom-

buis, wat anoniem wou bly, meen egterdaarvan het nog niks gekom nie en allesstaan doodstil.Theresa Uys, raadslid vir wyk 21 van die

subraad 7 (Koeberg) het aan TygerBurgergesê die rede vir die vertraging is dat dieprojek hersien moes word in die lig van diebeplande groot behuisingsontwikkelingrondom Durbanville, asook die vooruitsigvan ’n MyCiti-busroete.Volgens haar is R200 000 reeds begroot vir

die bou van die toilet en raadsaal, en is sygesê dat dié projek verlede week sou begin.“Die implementering van die opknap-

pingsprojek van die hele taxi-staanplek isvertraag, omdat planne van twee, drie jaargelede nie meer voldoen aan die vereistesnie,” het sy gesê.Volgens Uys is die vandalisme so erg by

die toiletgebou by die taxi-staanplek, dat ’nsekerheidswag nou voltyds aangestel moes

word.“Hulle moes die pype en ander materiaal

beveilig, om te keer dat dit nie gesteel wordnie,” het sy gesê.Sy het gesê TCT is nie bereid om afstand

te doen van hul geboue nie, en die taxi-staanplek is nie meer ’n opsie vir die sop-kombuis nie.“Daar word nog gesoek na ’n geskikte al-

ternatiewe perseel vir die sopkombuis.Daar is regtig ’n tekort aan stadseiendomin Durbanville,” het sy gesê.Sy het gesê die Laerskool Durbanville het

terugrapporteer dat daar aansienlik min-der voorvalle met hawelose mense was se-dert die sopkombuis gesluit het, endat hulleook nie meer in die bushaltes by die skoolslaap nie.“Die beste opsie sal wees om ’n goue mid-

deweg vir almal te vind. Ons wil saamwerkmetmaatskaplike ontwikkeling om die pro-bleem op te los,” het sy gesê.Wat die vordering met die stadsverbete-

ringsdistrik (CID)-projek vir Durbanvillebetref, het sy gesê hulle is nou besig om diegrense vas te stel.’n Uitvoerende komitee is sowat drie

maande gelede op die been gebring en diekomitee bepaal nou die grense van die be-plande stadsverbeteringsdistrik vir Dur-banville.“Wat danvolg, is dat die inwonershieroor

moet stem. Ek is baie tevredemet die vorde-ring. Dit gaan ’n positiewe impak op diedorp se sakekern hê,” het sy gesê.

A business man from Durbanville has foun-ded the Hope4Kids organisation to demon-state his gratitude for success in life.

Newly registered as a non-profit organi-sation last week, Juan Ehlers’s organisati-on is not letting the grass grow under itsfeet.

A huge donation of about two tons of foodworth R30 000 was handed over to needy fa-milies of children of the Alpha PrimarySchool and daycare centres in Morningstar,Durbanville last Friday.

A total of 172 boxes with groceries werehanded over.

“Being a successful businessman withmany national and international accom-plishments, I felt a need to give back to mycommunity and its people across all the

boundaries within South Africa. Just may-be I could change somebody’s life,” Ehlerssaid.

“Looking at my ten-year-old son, I felt thisabundant need to just hold him and tell himeverything will be okay.

“Suddenly I realised that there are so ma-ny children who would never feel that hugor hear those words. I felt sad and, from the-se emotions I started Hope4Kids.

“I chose children because they are our fu-ture and if we can change their lives, we cantransform our community and even maybeour country.

“I believe that if we can change lives oneby one, we can overcome poverty and vio-lence and create smart entrepreneurs andstrong leaders,” he said.

Hope4Kids is a project of the Juan EhlersFoundation which Ehlers established earli-er this year.

public transport andbuses might have takenchances (with this kindof fraud) previously, weare now seeing more ofthe less reputable trans-port companies behaving fraudulently.“It is definitely a worrying tendency,”

alert after an operation in Sacks Circlein Bellville two weeks ago.The Kraaifontein owner of two Tata

tipper trucks and the truck drivers werearrested during a routine road blockthere on Thursday 7 May.A vigilant officer found falsified li-

cence plates and a colour copied licencedisc on the first truck.After the Bellville police’s vehicle unit

was approached for assistance, it turnedout the details for this truck actually be-longed to another truck owned by thesame Kraaifontein man.It was also found the registration num-

ber on the colour copied disc did not cor-respond with the number plates dis-played on the truck.

Prime suspectsA second truck was stopped shortly

thereafter and found toalso be toting falsifieddiscs and plates.The second truck also

turned out to belong tothe same Kraaifonteinman.“This was clearly not a

good day for these fraud-sters, but sadly this caseis not unique,” Smithsaid at the time.“We have started ob-

serving a trend and traf-fic officers are spending more time in-specting heavy motor vehicles to checktheir VIN numbers.”Tipper trucks are prime suspects in

the City’s overall littering and dumpingcampaign, he added.“On the one hand,we are enforcing the

by-laws pertaining to illegal dumping,but on the other we are also focusing onthe heavy vehicles used because very of-ten there is some type of fraud involvedas wewitnessed during the recent opera-tion.”

Sedert 2003 skakel ek die StadKaapstad elke maand met mywaterlesing, omdat ons agtermure en hekke moet wegkruip.Ek hou natuurlik rekord vanmy waterlesing. So drie maandegelede ontvang ek ’n munisipa-liteitsrekening van R12 000 met’n onbekende meternommer enverkeerde waterlesing. Dierekening is vir waterverbruiksedert Oktober 2014, hoewel ekreeds per debietorder betaal het.

Ek e-pos, ek besoek dieBellville-munisipaliteit en ekskakel die Stad Kaapstad vir ’nverduideliking. Ek wou netweet of ek twee keer vir allesmoet betaal. ’n Beampte worddrie keer na my woning gestuuren neem die watermeter af metsy selfoon. Die bedrag vanR12 000 is per debietorderverhaal van my rekening. Ekhet nog nie ’n verduidelikingontvang aan wie behoort dieonbekende watermeter nie en ofmy geld terug ontvang is nie.

I have dealings with thesepeople, the so called foreigners,or “aliens” as they are calledhere. I found them to be veryintelligent and cultured. His wife was denieda job too and was told by asenior official that she is notwelcome here. The same thinghappened to her husband, whowent to work and was told “wedon’t want you here, We willkill you”.

These people are beinghunted down, harassed andinsulted.

I find this very sad andupsetting seeing that numberone in the country said “all areone” and welcome.

This man is an upstandingman with outstanding charac-ter. What can be done for him?The mystery is why were theyallowed in the country in thefirst place?

A family is diagnosed with childhoodcancer, not just the child.

These are the words of Vanessa Ver-maak, Western Cape regional manager ofCHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA.

CHOC is one of the three beneficiaries ofthis year’s Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can!charity concert, takingplace at the endof Ju-ly. TygerBurger is the event media sponsor.

CHOC was established in 1979 when agroup of parents with children sufferingfromcancer and other life-threatening blooddisorders decided to start a support group.

In the 36 years since, CHOC has grown in-to a country-wide charity that looks after theemotional andpractical needs of entire fami-lies where children are diagnosed with can-cer, without any government support.

CHOC is involved with the whole familyfrom the diagnosis of cancer until the out-come, which, if detected early, is completelycured in 85% of cases.

“We take as much stress off the family aspossible,” says Vermaak.

“Treatment is a very long process and inthe majority of the families one of the par-ents will lose their job in order to be withthe sick child,” she says.

“In Cape Town we work mostly with theacademically linked hospitals: Tygerberg,Red Cross and Groote Schuur, because theyhave paediatric oncology units, so we do notneed funding for medication. But often afamily will be sent here from as far as theEastern Cape for tests and the doctor will di-agnose the child and say: ‘you have cancerand you have to start treatment today’. Thatfamily is completely unprepared. They comeherewith nothing and then they have to stayfor at least three to six months.”

CHOC owns ten houses and three lodges

throughout South Africawhere children and a par-ent can stay for the dura-tion of treatment. Every-thing that comes with thelodging is free, from foodand toiletries to hospitaltransport and pro-grammes with the chil-dren and parents.

CHOC in Cape Townalone has a R3.8 millionannual budget, but likeany charity they still haveto go out and raise money,Vanessa says.

“We get funding fromordinary people, localbusinesses and schoolsthat support us and thishas been going on for 36years, this is what kept usgoing, but we constantlyhave to cut back on pro-jects to make ends meet.”

CHOC gets some Lotto funding to coversalaries, rent and petrol.

“So every cent the public gives us goes di-rectly to the families and the treatment cen-tres and educational and awareness pro-grammes,” Vanessa says.

She says many projects had to be cut backseriously in the new financial year due tobudget constraints.

Early detection is essential, which is whyCHOC emphasises awareness programmes.

“In the last two weeks we lost five chil-dren. This weekwe had to send a child homebecause it was too late to do anything.

“The majority of deaths are unnecessary.If it was caught early enough it could havebeen cured and that is what frustrates us.”

In SouthAfrica one in 600 children is diag-nosed before the age of 16, but according to

Vanessa, that is only half the children thatshould be diagnosed.

Because the symptoms are so similar toother diseases it is often missed. For manyyears, the basic symptoms of childhood can-cer were not included in the nursing diplo-ma or basic medical degree.

“So we have thousands of doctors in thiscountry that do not know what to look for.”

In the last three years CHOC has trained11 000 medical professionals and 3 000 tradi-tional healers on basic warning signs andwhat to dowhenyou spot them.Themessageto parents is to trust your intuition when achild is not well.

She says the image of a little white childwith no hair and a bandana is just not thereality of childhood cancer. Instead, the ill-ness is completely representative of theSouth African population.

trofee vir die seisoen se openingsrondes in

die C-afdeling (C1). Daarbenewens het hulleook ’n hele rits B-, en C-afdeling-trofees inge-palm. Die klub het ookmet die louerewegge-stap vir die “klub met die meeste punte” en“span met die meeste punte”.Bert van Schalkwyk het die enkelspeltro-

fee in die WP gewen en Gunther Giliomeeis bekroon as die mees belowende jong spe-ler in die provinsie.“Ons is baie trots op ons prestasties by die

klub. Hier is groot samehorigheid en almalondersteun mekaar. Ek voel ons kan veraltrots wees op die trofee wat ons gekry hetvir dieuitbreiding enbewusmakingvan juk-skei. Die trofee vir die “gesinmet diemeestebetrokkenheid en administrasie” deel onsmet die Rust-gesin van Polisie.“Wat jukskei uniek maak, is die feit dat

Province Primary School biathlon league of45 schools.In addition to these splendid season pla-

cings, the followingESCSbiathleteswere se-lected to represent Western Province at theInter-Provincial Tournament held in Oudts-hoorn inFebruary:TravisDefty,Dominiquede Wet, Lauren Goodwin, Caleb Topper andMorgan Topper.TheWestern Province team emerged win-

ners for the first time in nine years at thisevent. Morgan Topper, a Grade 3 pupils,gleaned a silver medal at the WP champsevent at UWC recently.Lauren Goodwin, Grade 8, and Brandon

Arlow, Grade 11, were selected for the WPteam that competed at theNational BiathlonTournament held in Stellenbosch lastmonth. Michael van Schalkwyk and TravisDefty were reserves for their age group cate-gory. Lauren, with 2224 points, placed four-teenth out of 53 competitors. On 2137 points,Brandon, competing in theMen’s Open divi-sion, placed 11th out of 17 competitors andalso had the fastest swim of all competitorson the day.

It was the perfect way to get the inauguralFNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN off theground. A dip on the finish line and miss-

ing the world’s best by one second.Kenya’s Emmanuel Bett and Daniel Salel

fought to the finish line with the decision,after much deliberation, going the way ofBett in a time of 33 minutes and 32 seconds(33:32). Salel recorded the same time.In near perfect conditions, the race got un-

derway in Milnerton at 9:00. The country’stop 10 men and women were competingagainst the likes of Daniel Salel, EmmanuelBett, Moses Kipsiro and Vivian Cheruiyot.Within the first 2km it was evident this

was to be a hard and fast race. EmmanuelBett, who has run a 27:51:16 over 10 000m,was in no mood for a bunch finish and seta blistering pace from the start. Within 2kmthe lead group of twenty plus had been whit-tled down to eight, with Bett setting the paceand Salel running next to him with Kipsiro,Timothy Toroitich , Elroy Gelant, GladwinMzazi and Lucky Mohale sitting on theirtails.By 3kmMohalehadbeenblownaway.Bett

continued to race at 2:47/km (2 minutes 47seconds) pace which saw first GladwinMza-zi drop off (around 4km just before the raceentered the harbour). Gelant was to fadefrom the leading pack shortly thereafter,and when Kipsiro dropped just before thehalfway mark, it was down to three.Bett was not going to slow down despite

the onset of nausea at around the 6kmmark.As they entered Government Avenue at thetop of Adderley Street (9km), there was stillno splitting Toroitich, Salel and Bett. The10km mark was passed in 27:48 and the racefor a world record was on.Not even the short but sharp climb up
