buiten haar selfoon, haar enigste oorbly-

    wende besitting stukkend geskeur en

haar rug het skraapwonde opgedoen. Ma-

Hulle was baie vinnig, binne vyfminute,

    slaapkamervenster gele is, oopgebreek.

Elizabeth werksaam as berader in n priva-

hile the topping of about 240 blue-

    gum (Eucalyptus) trees in Race

    Course Road commenced in full

swing on Monday, some residents are still

worried the historic lane of trees may be

    hacked like in the past.

The road will be closed until Sunday 3

May between 08:30 and 15:30 for the work.

To add fuel to fire, TygerBurger received

information that the City of Cape awarded

the second lowest tender of about R170 000

to Tree Cutting People, whichwas allegedly

almost R700 000 lower than the next tender.

    An arborist fromStellenbosch, Riaan van

Zyl, who quoted R850 000 for the work, said

he doubts if the work, as he understood at

a site visit, can be done for only R170 000.

It is the samecontractorwho recently top-

ped the lane of bluegum trees in Blaauw-

    berg Road in Table View.

A local resident of Durbanville, Paul Otto

of Tree-S-Cape, a specialist in tree care, pho-

ned TygerBurger to comment. He referred

to an email from a City official which was

distributed in January 2004, with an in-

struction that trees should only be topped

    in extreme cases.

In this email Christa le Roux, the then di-

rector of City parks and nature conservati-

on, instructed that topping as a pruning

technique must be stopped with immediate

    effect.

This technique should only be applied in

    exceptional circumstances..., she said.

Some of the negative effects mentioned in-

    clude that new sprouts areweakly attached;

lopping leads to rapid new growth, which

results in a far more dense, dangerous

    crown; scalding of bark tissue may occur;

stubs with large open wounds are vulnera-

ble to invasion; although initially cheaper,

it leads to increased risk due to breakage of

    branches, cost of labour

    to carry out corrective

    trimming at a later sta-

    ge.

    Belinda Walker, may-

    oral committee member

    for community services

    and special projects of

    the City, said the city

    parks department ap-

    preciates the concerns

    being expressed by the

    community.

    Walker assured resi-

    dents that the city

    parks department only

    performs topping as a

last resort and it is car-

    ried out very carefully to

    ensure that the trees reg-

    row to a healthy state.

Topping is only applied in exceptional

circumstances. This case is considered ex-

ceptional due to the size and age of the trees

and, furthermore, owing to the road being

    a very busy metropolitan road.

Since 2000, the city parks department

has trimmed the trees on a regular basis

using a recommended technique known as

drop crotch pruning, where long laterals

are cut back to shorter lateral branches. Du-

ring thesemaintenance sessions, a 4m clea-

rance was cut above the road surface and

any dead trees or branches were removed.

    Additionally, any obstructions to street

lights and signs were cleared, she said.

    Nevertheless, the branches keep gro-

wing and they become longer and slender.

Eventually they cannot hold their own

weight and drop, without warning, particu-

larly in windy and rainy weather or when

the trees are full of heavy seed capsules.

    Branches have dropped onnumerous oc-

casions, but fortunately in most instances,

there were no severe injuries or damage do-

ne to residents and their property.

However, in the past three years there

have been claims against the Citywhere da-

    mage did occur, she

    said.

    Walker added the city

    parks department has

    appointed several con-

    sultants to further in-

    form on this matter and

    from this process, top-

    ping has emerged as one

    of the most affordable

    and sustainable options.

    The contractors lis-

    ted their options at the

    quotation stage as per

    the necessary require-

    ments. All of the infor-

    mation submitted was

    then checked and dee-

    med satisfactory. Worth

    noting is that the con-

    tractor has carried out

extensive work for city parks in the nort-

hern district and the work done has been

    deemed satisfactory, she said.

    Regarding future maintenance, Walker

said the City budgeted for such maintenan-

ce under the repairs and maintenance pro-

gramme. Trees will be pruned approxima-

tely every three years. However, any follow-

uppruningwill occur ona smaller scale and

will cost less than the present programme.

According to Walker the trees will not be

cut back asmuch as the ones inBlaauwberg

Road. The trees in Racecourse Road will

be topped 10 to 15metres above ground level

andwhere there are laterals on a particular

tree, thesewill be left. She added that both

the project manager and the area manager

will visit the site regularly to carry out in-

spections and sign off the end product.

    MICHELLE LINNERT

    @linnertmb

    T

he 22-year-old son of a local Welge-

dacht swimming club owner has been

charged with 18 counts of burglary at

a college in Alabama in the USA.

    DuncanBonney, a standout athlete and

    student at theBirmingham-SouthernColle-

ge, is said to have raided his college mates

dorm rooms while they were on spring

    break.

This was reported by the AlabamaMedia

Group on their website, AL.com on Wed-

    nesday 8 April.

According to the AL.com reporter, Carol

Robinson, Duncan is said to have perpetra-

ted the burglaries after stealing a master

    key to the dormitories.

Duncan is the son of Gary and Su Bonney

from Welgedacht in Bellville, who own the

    well-known Vineyard swimming club,

which trains at various venues across the

    province.

    Bond set at $180 000

    AL.coms Robinson reported that Dun-

canwas chargedwith 18 counts of third-de-

    gree burglary, quoting Birmingham poli-

    ce spokesman, Lieutenant Sean Edwards.

A native of (Bellville), South Africa, the

college junior was arrested Monday (6

April) by Birmingham detectives. He re-

mains in the Jefferson County Jail today

with bond set at $180 000 bond, Robinson

    quoted Edwards.

    Campus police contacted Birmingham

police after the spate of break-ins between

March 13 and March 22, Edwards told the

    reporter.

    According to Robinson, Bonney actually

claimed to be one of the victims and staged

his dorm room to appear to have been bur-

gled. She reported that campus detectives

didnt buy Bonneys story of being a vic-

    tim.

    Robinson said the police investigation

showed Bonney stole the master key and

    took textbooks, valuable calculators, wat-

ches and electronics. He was selling the

textbooks on websites that buy back the

class material. He was also selling the elec-

tronics mostly PlayStation and X-box on

    eBay, Edwards told Robinson.

    Top swimmer

She reported that Bonney had an out-

standing swimming season last year, win-

ning various titles, including that of Male

Swimmer of the Year for the second season.

He is said to have won both the colleges

Newcomer and Swimmer of the Year

    awards in 2013.

Duncan is a good youngman and has co-

operated fully with the investigating detec-

    tive, Birmingham attorney Chris Daniel

    told AL.com.

His family in South Africa have expres-

sed their complete support and we are wor-

king through the legal process together.

    When TygerBurger contacted the Bon-

neys for comment, they refrained from

    using the opportunity.

No comment, Su Bonney said, with

husband Gary reiterating with: We have

nothing to say to the media.

The Vineyard swimming club trains at a

number of swimming pools including that

of the Durbanville High School, the Bellvil-

le municipal pool, as well as at pools in Bre-

dasdorp, the Helderberg, Paarl and Ronde-

    bosch.

    Load shedding leads to risks

    ESM ERASMUS

    @erasmusesme

    T

he effect load shedding can have on

electrical faults in houses came under

    the spotlight last week.

Electrical faults are often stated as the

cause of fires in houses and businesses, if no

other cause is known, said Wentzel van der

Merwe, national claims manager of CIA in

    Johannesburg.

In the incident last Tuesday morning in

which the house of Dr Mariana de Jager in

Durbanville burnt down, it was speculated

that the power surge created when the elec-

tricity flow was restored after load shedding,

    caused an electrical fault.

    An independent assessor for CIA,MikeHill

ofMikeHill &Associates, was first on the sce-

ne at the gutted house last Wednesday mor-

    ning.

He said there is a good change the electrical

surge after load shedding had affected so-

    me electrical equipment. Itmay havewell

been the geyser, hi-fi or television. It looks

as if the fire started further away from the

spare roomwhere Mariana slept, he said.

Van der Merwe said the outcome of the

forensic investigation is not yet known.

Fanus Coetzee, head of Santams claims

assessment services, said at Santam the

number of load shedding claims is not high

compared to the overall number of claims

    they receive in general.

They have received several claims rela-

ted to load shedding eight claims in Fe-

bruary, 122 in March and another 67 in

    April.

These claims were primarily related to

house contents, such as damage to electri-

cal appliances and the deterioration of ref-

    rigerator contents, he said.

We have received reports of power sur-

ges due to load shedding, but not a specific

case such as the abovementioned example

(in which a house burnt down).

In the instance where a fire is caused

by an electrical fault due to load shedding,

Santam will cover the insured under the

house owners for building and household

contents section of their personal policies,

    he said.

Coetzee advised people to tryminimise da-

mage and loss during load shedding using

    the following tips:

.Alarm batteries: Most batteries will last

at least six hours, but they should be tested

    regularly to ensure theyare functioningpro-

    perly;

. Electric fencing: An electric fence

should have a back-up battery, which needs

    to be tested regularly and replaced if needed;

    .Arriving or leavinghome:Homeowners

should ensure they are especially alertwhen

arriving or leaving home in the evenings, as

    the street lights andoutside lightingmaynot

    be functioning;

. Automated gates and garage doors: Ho-

me owners should ensure that they have al-

ternative ways to enter and exit their home

if the electric security gates and garage door

    is not functioning due to load shedding;

. Contact your security company: If con-

sumers feel unsafe at any time during a po-

wer failure, they should contact their securi-

    ty company emergency number.

Impressed: One of the most famous wine makers in Germany, Dr Rowald Hepp (centre)

from Schloss Vollrads in the Rheingau, visited Meerendal recently. Here he is with Bennie

Howard (left), Meerendals marketing manager, and Liza Goodwin, cellar master. Hepp has

been instrumental in creating some of the most sought after wines at the historic

German castle over the past two decades. He was very impressed with the young

Sauvignon Blanc wines from the 2015 harvest he tasted at Meerendal.

    I read with interest Zeldas

    letter, Diere in sirkusse word

    misbruik, TygerBurger 15

April. I recall some letters last

year and remember a group of

    protesters with placards calling

for closure of the circus which

    is again on tour.

I agree with some of your

remarks but not all. You have

your right to say what you

feel. I would like to ask if you

feel the same way, and would

write to all media here and in

South Africa to put a stop to

some of the following places of

    amusement.

    The Aquarium at the V&A

    Waterfront. Think of all the

    sealife in their glass tronke

    and that magnificent shark

    swimming round and round in

its tronk getting fed what its

    given. The ocean where it

    should be is possibly 100

metres away. Then we can go

to Hout Bay to the World of

Birds and see all those animals

    in their tronke. They have

    Black eagles and others there

    permanent in draadhokke

who can see the blue sky and

    mountains close by but cannot

soar to hunt and catch their

    own prey. Monkey World

    Somerset West, the lion park

and so we can go on, even to a

    well known nursery who keep

a few animals in a cooped up

    space. Perhaps for selfsugtige

    finansile genot as you say.

    However, many people can

    take their children and grand-

children to see the animals for

a day of fun. Go and see the

    smiles and happiness it brings

    to the children. Also, they

    create employment.

    I personally, and Im sure

    there are many others, would

    like to urge Maclarens circus

    and others Ive mentioned, to

keep up the good they do and

    the pleasure they bring to

many who are not able to go to

    the Kruger and Etosha Parks.

And on a sad note Zelda, we

humans are all living in our

    own tronke en draadhokke

    Animals bring

    joy to children

    With regards to your article

    titled Flood of queries over

    water usage, TygerBurger, 15

April, I would like to inform

you that I am disputing a water

    bill of over R7000.

    I disagree with the statement

that a water meter cannot jump

    and an intermittent fault would

    be easy to identify.

If a foreign object in the

    Re: Flood of questions over

    water usage, TygerBurger, 15

April. I had a similar problem

    and it was finally discovered

    that the geyser overflow pipe

    was pouring directly into a

    drain which was not easily

    visible. A plumber sorted out

    the geyser and solved the

    problem and rerouted the

overflow pipe, but I had to pay

    for the water wasted.

maak van die mense wat as

    parkeerkollekteerders werk. Ek

het parkeer en dadelik was die

persoon met sy masjien by my

en vra sommer dadelik R12. Ek

vra toe of daar nie tariewe vir

korter tye is nie, want ek moet

net iets vinnig afgee. Net R6 vir

    n halfuur, is sy antwoord.

Ek vra toe waar is die

    tariewelys.

Hy wys toe na die agterkant

van n boom waar ek dit nie

maklik kon sien nie. Toe sien

ek dit is 60 minute gratis en

daarna is dit R3 vir elke 15

    SLICE OF LIFE

    No top cop

    left we all

    share blame

What message are we sending our

children when the top cop in the prov-

ince faces suspension after charges of

    corruption are levelled at him?

    Western Cape police commissioner

Arno Lamoer and three senior officers

appeared in court and are facing suspec-

sion on 109 counts including corruption,

    money laundering and racketeering, with

    a Cape businessman.

These are officers who, filling the

highest policing position in the province,

should be beyond reproach to the

extent that a parking ticket could not be

    held to their names.

Yet daily we are faced with stories

about police officers flouting the law.

The very men and women who are

meant to protect us, are committing

    crimes and endangering others.

Where are the days when becoming a

police officer was an honour, a calling for

only the bravest and most trustworthy?

Perhaps it has seeped in from our

society, where breaking the law is so

widespread it has become the norm.

How often do we think nothing of

    jaywalking, driving after drinking or

keeping money found on the street?

We turn a blind eye to drug dealing

and gangsterism, quick to pull our

curtains closed or avert our faces.

We should not only hold our police

    officers accountable, reporting their

failures to uphold the law, but also our

    community members, friends and family.

The fight against corruption is the

responsibility of each and every one of

    us.

Cold dinners, cold bathwater, dark rooms

and interrupted electricity supply are hot

    topics at the moment.

City mayco member for utility services,

    Ernest Sonnenberg, recently told Fin24

why some areas never get load shedding,

while others appear to always in the dark.

As far as exclusions from load shedding

are concerned, the city is guided by regula-

    tion NRS048-9, Sonnenberg said.

This deals with the appropriate treat-

ment of critical loads and the essential load

    requirements of various customers.

Fin24 reports areas exempt from load

shedding, as identified by theNRS048-9, are

measured by a number of criteria.

These include: the safety of people, the en-

vironment, the potential damage to plants

associated with a critical national product

    (for example wastewater treatment works)

and technical constraints on executing load

    shedding and curtailment or restoration.

Based on these criteria andwhere possi-

ble, the city does exclude major hospitals,

major central business districts and areas

where there are major crowds gathered for

    specific events, Sonnenberg said.

Areas previously excluded are the Table

Mountain cable car, as well as parts of the

CBDs across the city, and major hospitals.

Some residents and businesses may be

excluded from load shedding if their pro-

perties share a dedicated circuit with the

    abovementioned exclusions.

    Eskom spokespersonKhulu Phasiwe told

    Fin24 some municipalities used automated

technology to manage the process, while

    others use manual switches.

If the technician is stuck in traffic and

needs to get to the switchboard, perhaps

theremight be a delay, he said, using a hy-

    pothetical example.

    Sonnenberg said nuisance tripping

was the cause for certain areas experien-

cing longer load shedding cuts than they

    should. - Source: News24

Anxiety is a natural condition of life. If we

utilise our nervous energy, it can be a very

powerful motivating force to perform, to

reach deadlines, and not to be complacent

with the status quo. Life without some

anxiety is not life at all! However, anxiety

can, if not managed, become uncontrolled

and even turn into pathological anxiety that

    can cause emotional difficulties (an

    overwhelmed feeling, frequently feeling on

edge or frightened, burnout, irritability, or

    evenpanic attacksor depression), cognitive

    difficulties (overthinking, ambivalence and

    impaired concentration), social impairment

    (substance abuse and difficulties with

    interpersonal relationships), or physical

    difficulties (appetitedysregulation,sleeping

    problems, excessive tiredness and

    decreased immunity).

A panic attack is a sudden rush of

    uncomfortable and unpleasant physical

symptoms (such as dizziness, shortness of

breath, or chest pain), together with

thoughts of impending doom (such as

making a scene, having a heart attack, or

losing one's mind). After a few of these

    episodes, the individual can become

    physically and psychologically tense in

    preparationof thenextattack.

When you suffer from an anxiety disorder, it

is important to ensure a thorough

evaluation to confirm the diagnosis and

ident i fy st ressors and tr iggers . A

    multidisciplinary and holistic treatment

approach is the most effective. Medication

is not always necessary and should be used

    judiciously. Changing destructive thought

    patterns and learning effective relaxation

    techniques coupled with coping strategies

    through psychotherapy is important.

Lifestyle changes such as regular exercise,

    avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and certain

painkillers or fat burners; and a regular

sleeping pattern can also enhance one's

quality of life and reduce unnecessary levels

    ofanxiety.

man, Callie, in April 2000 deur die rebelle-

groepAbuSayyaf op die tropiese eiland Si-

padan as gyselaars gevange geneem is.

Dit het heel toevallig so uitgewerk.

Ironies genoeg gaan hulle, volgens hul

beplanning, ook op 2 Mei by die Santiago-

    katedraal, die spirituele hoogtepunt van

    di staptogvir pelgrims, aankom dieself-

de dag toe sy enhaarmanbyna in nmilit-

    re aanval gesterf het.

Dit was glad nie so beplan nie, maar die

staptog het daarom vir my baie betekenis

    gekry, vertel Monique.

s is Xtreme for Kids Camino gebore!

Verlede jaar het Monique met die Xtre-

me for Kids-fietstoer ten bate van die Mat-

la A Bana-projek begin waarin fietsryers

van Johannesburg tot in Kaapstad ry om

    aan die jaarlikse Kaap-

    stad-fietstoer deel te neem.

Die doel is om geld vir pro-

    jekte teen kindermishan-

    deling in te samel.

    So, die ou tannies gaan

    die fietsryers wys ons kan

    dit k doen. Intussen het

    ons nou al superfiks ge-

    word.

    Di dapper stappers se

    ouderdomme wissel tus-

    sen 43 en 51 jaar.

    Monique is deur n

    Spaanse student uitge-

daag toe sy laasjaar as vry-

williger in Spanje was om studente daar

Engels te leer. Monique enMarilize, asook

begin. Ek ervaar dit as n spirituele reis

woes ry.
