    Omission

In the edition of 11 November, Tyger-

Burger published a photo caption with

the heading Fights kick up a storm.

The name of the photographer was

    accidentally omitted. The photo was

    taken by Lucille Julius.

    TygerBurger apologises for the

    omission.

    draadlose verkeerslig-tegnologie in Durban-

verklaring. Dit vervang die harde draadlyne

wat verkeersligte aktiveer as voertuie die

    verkeersligte nader.

vergadering in September reeds n voorstel

    skakel.

Dit behels die stuk van De Villiersweg

    vanaf die sirkel met Brackenfell-boulevard

in Vredekloofhoogte in Brackenfell tot by

die sirkel waar die pad by De Villiersweg in

    Durbanville aansluit.

    n Openbare deelname-proses hieroor sal

binnekort gevolg word alvorens n finale be-

    sluit geneem sal word.

    Jip de Jagerverlenging

n Openbare vergadering vir inwoners is

    vroegOktober by die LaerskoolKenridge ge-

    by Altydgedacht).

    sluit.

    Tweede fase

    Die tweede fase, waarvan konstruksie-

werk in Maart 2016 deur n ander kontrak-

teur begin, sal by die Tygervalleipad begin

asook die Kenridge The Hills Ratepayers

tranerige man jou bel vir n bydrae, omdat

s kapt.

skrik. Syhet die foonneergesit en die huis-

hulp gebel. Di is toe springlewendig en

weet van niks. Toe bel my vrou Joseph te-

rivier. Sy kom gewoonlik per taxi na hulle.

Hy meen die man se storie klink heel ge-

    loofwaardig,want diemanklink ontsettend

Hulle

teiken glo veral ouer mense wat huishulpe

het, s hy. Lede van die publiek kan gerus

    uitkyk vir di selfoonnommer: 073 795 1091.

Alan s hul vorige huishulpwas baie siek

Nimb voeg by dat di ou slenter vir n ruk

lank stil was. Dit is weer daardie tyd van

die jaardatmense geld soeken slenters soos

hierdie is onmiddellike kontant in die

skurk se sak.Asseblief, betaal gngeld aan

    A

    local charity organisation annually

    hosting a Christmas campaign called

Packaged Love is looking for dona-

    tions.

The aim, says ArthurMakhuri of theMet-

ro Evangelical Services, or MES, is to bring

awareness to the community and also give

out some packaged items to the people that

they serve in the northern suburbs.

He says they are appealing to any interest-

ed parties or donors to either donate or bring

the items that are listed on a special poster

of a Christmas tree they use that forms the

    heart of their campaign.

    The items include the following:

    V A R35 toiletry pack;

    V R550, which equals 10 Grow (employ-

    ment) shifts;

    V R25 for workshop stationery;

    V R90 for two packs of underwear;

    V R140 for one weeks stay in a shelter;

    V R45 for a ream of paper;

    V R50, equalling meals for two weeks;

V R5000, which equates to one year worth

    of training and development for one person;

    V R500 for two visits with a social worker;

V or R10 for five phone calls to loved ones

    or potential employers.

This is so that someone less fortunate can

also have a merry Christmas, Arthur says.

    Besides their big Christmas campaign,

MES is also registered as a participant in

next years Cape Town Cycle Tour, Arthus

says. We still have space for interested cy-

clists, he says, adding they secured 80 en-

    tries.

Our entry fee will be R 1600 per cyclist,

which includes the R700 that we need to pay

for your entry into the cycle tour, Arthur

    says.

The rest of the money will go towards the

community they serve, while several prizes

    are up for grabs.

The theft of generators and wheelie bins in

Durbanville and Bellville are on the rise.

According to a media release by Lieuten-

ant Marchell Rhode, several cases of theft of

generators and wheelie bins have recently

been reported at the Durbanville police sta-

    tion.

Theft of generators occurred at the Protea

Hotel Durbanville in Jip de Jager Road, Bell-

    ville during the night.

It seems these items were not secured or

locked up out of sight. The community must

    secure and safeguard their generators,

    warns Rhode.

Wheelie bins seem to be a favourite among

    thieves in Durbanville.

Various cases are also being reported

    where criminals are targeting houseswhere

they are forcing open garage doors, Rhode

    says.

Valuable items such as expensive bicy-

cles and electric power tools are then stolen

    out of the garage.

These criminals know that little or no se-

curity measures are in place. We urge the

community to install alarm systems or

beams in their garages to detect intrusion,

    he says.

Theft out of and frommotor vehicles at De

Ville Centre at the Pick n Pay underground

parking area is also a concern.

The community is verynegligent by leav-

ing their vehicles with windows open and

leaving valuable items inside the car.

People should not leave valuable items in

plain sight of everyone, he warns.

opelik is daar nou minder voorvalle

    waarin voetgangers soos huishulpe

    motor by hulle stilhou.

n Groot deurbraak is verlede Woensdag

gemaak toe twee vermeende rowers in een

s n voertuig, n wit Hyundai Getz, om-

streeks 23:18 aangekeer is nadat hulle deur

    die CNi-sekerheidsmaatskappy in Protea-

    die volgendedag inBellville in verbandmet

    di saak in hegtenis geneem.

    Volgens Robert van Nimwegen, direk-

teur van CNi, was hulle besigmet patrollie-

    Proteavallei-buurtwagradio hoor van n

    verdagte klein wit voertuig.

    hiermoelikheid gemaakhet, enhet dieBell-

Verskeie voorvalle het sedert Junie in

    Durbanville en Bellville kop uitgesteek

    waarin voetgangers soos huishulpe, asook

    drawwers beroof is.

In een van die mees onlangse voorvalle

verlede week is n huishulp in Kenridge

    Proteavallei beroof is.

    skokapparaat gevind, volgens Nimb.

    A

total of 29 speed humps are to be im-

plemented on streets in the Durban-

ville area before June next year.

This is part of a special budget allocation

of R18 million for the implementation of

270 traffic calming projects across the City

    in the current financial year.

    Themajority of the traffic calmingmeas-

    ures, suchas speedhumps, raised pedestri-

an crossings and intersections, will be im-

plemented at schools and along streets in

residential areaswith a high number of pe-

destrians or cyclists, said Brett Herron,

Mayco member for transport, in a media

    release last week.

The purpose of the 270 projects is to pro-

tect themost vulnerable road users among

us children, those with special needs, cy-

    clists and other pedestrians.

    Money well spent

We believe that this money will be well

spent to reduce the risks of the death of or

injury to pedestrians. It must be said

though that effective traffic law enforce-

ment and driver behaviour are just as im-

    portant, he said.

The budget allocation follows from the

new traffic calming policy that served be-

fore the Citys Transport Cape Town (TCT)

    portfolio committee onThursday 5Novem-

ber, and is now recommended to council

    for final approval.

The new policy also addresses the cur-

rent backlog of 500 traffic calming projects

to the value of R30 million, Herron said.

    TCT will implement traffic calming

measures at 50 schools each financial year,

as well as a further 150 projects from the

list of approved projects, subject to availa-

    ble funding.

Each year TCT receives more than 400

requests for the implementation of traffic

    calming measures.

Wehave actually seen a steady increase

in the number of requests over the last few

years due to the deterioration indriver dis-

cipline and a general disregard for the

rules of the road by all of the road users.

It was necessary to formulate a newpol-

icy that is financially sustainable in the

    long-run, responsive to critical safety

problems on residential roads, and will as-

sist in eliminating the backlog, Herron

    said.

The new policy directives include traffic

calming measures on roads adjacent to ex-

isting schools as a matter of priority, that

    ward councillors may identify, motivate

and fund traffic calming measures in re-

sponse to a proven history of accidents on

a road or in response to a recent and very

    urgent incident that demands immediate

intervention, and that private people or or-

ganisations may also fund traffic calming

measures, subject to the prescribed condi-

    tions.

Owners of property adjacent to a road on

which calming measures are proposed to

be implemented should be offered the op-

    portunity to comment.

Help by obeying rules of the road

We are trying our best to make our

roads as safe as possible for all road users,

in particular for our children, but we can-

not do this on our own.

We need our residents to also play their

part by obeying the rules of the road be

it motorists, cyclists or pedestrians, Her-

    ron said.

Speed humps will be implemented in

Durbanville in the following streets: Ber-

riedale Crescent (2); Camelia Street, Wel-

way Park (1); Cyclamen Street, Welway

    Park (1); Fisant Street, Amanda Glen (2);

Goedemoed Road (2); Patou Street, Aman-

ritius Crescent and Rosendal Street, Stel-

    lenberg (8); ChanteclerAvenue (1) andGar-

    implemented in Chantecler Avenue.

    liefdadigheidsorganisasie, Matla a Bana.

    Die boekword opDinsdag 24November by

    die Isabellas-restaurant in die Willowbrid-

    ge-winkelsentrum bekendgestel.

    Hanlie Retief, die bekende rubriekskry-

wer vanRapport, sal die vraag en antwoord-

sessie behartig. Die bekendstelling begin om

    18:30 en bespreking by work-

    [email protected] is noodsaaklik.

Daar

moes die gyselaars vier maande lank in le-

    wensgevaarlike toestande oorleef totdat kol.

    Moeammar Ghadaffi hul vrylating bewerk-

Callie was oortuig dat hulle be-

Hy was so vreesbe-

Monique moes hom keer.

like kunstenaar Hermien van der Merwe

    Franshoekstraat, Durbanville Hills geopen.

Die publiek kan die werke op Saterdag 5

Desember van 09:00 tot 17:00 of per afspraak

besigtig. Di kunstenaar is onlangs vereer

Haar oor-

sponklike werke word ook in die winkel,

wat pas gerestoureer is, uitgestal en ver-

koop. Ek is baie lief daarvoor om fynbos

as tema te gebruik. Vir hierdie uitstalling

maak ek n reeks klein pen-en-ink-tekenin-

ge op papier. Ek gebruik olieverf op die ag-

tergrond, vertel sy. Ek is my lewe lank al

neer ek kreatief kan wees in my ateljee by

    my huis in Durbanville.

Mywerk is gewoonlik stil. Dit fluister sy

    boodskap, verduidelik Hermien. Fynbos

is pragtig en eie aan dieKaap. Daar is soveel

    verskillende blomplante in die fynbos-bio-

sfeer. Ek is veral lief vir proteas, suikerkan-

    ne, speldekussings en leucadendrons.

Fynbos het ook virmy n dieper, geesteli-

ke betekenis. Ek vind daarin ooreenkomste

tussen my kunsmaak en my geloofsreis.

    Gees.Eerswanneerdie saad sterf, kannuwe

    lewe daaruit kom, glo sy.

Saam met die fynbostekeninge, maak sy

vir hierdie uitstalling ook skilderye en teke-

ninge met aalwyne as tema. Hermien werk

in n groot verskeidenheid media, ook om

    them.

This is a disgrace that the

City cannot even fight this, but

want to take on the big guns.

    Get some undercover people

there to watch, and you will be

    shocked. The whole place is

full of small plastic bags and

foil. I have never used drugs,

but after seeing what I have

seen the past couple of months,

I can tell you exactly how to

    use drugs.

    The constant reckless, thought-

    less and downright criminal

    activity caused by drivers is

    actually quite breathtaking.

    Stop signs have by pure

    miracle changed to yield signs.

    Road etiquette is non existent.

Dont try crossing at a zebra

crossing; it is far too danger-

    ous.

When it comes to red robots

I would like to provide clarity.

When the red light shines, it

    means stop. This actually

    Traffic rules not for

    thesemotorists

means that you have to stay

stationary till the green light is

    activated, but please be careful

    when crossing or turning as

    there could be other drivers

coming from the other side who

are not familiar with the robot

    concept either.

    As an example, this morning

    (10 November) at 07:50 waiting

on the corner of Tindale and

    Durban roads, a white Range

Rover with a CF number plate

    decided that they were absolute-

    ly special, therefore mounting

    the pavement driving over the

lawn into the left turning lane.

    But then, feeling even more

important than the rest of the

    drivers waiting patiently,

    turned left into Durban Road

while the robot was still red!

Last week when I was driving

    home on Durban Road past

Tyger Valley, I could see the

driver in front of me was

    driving erratic, slowing down,

    speeding up, not quite in

control if at all. A young female

about 26 old was driving a

    black Toyota Yaris, merrily

texting away. I pulled up next

to her and hooted a few times.

She was so engrossed that she

    did not even hear me.

    When she eventually noticed I

indicated as to what she was

doing. Well, I got the one finger

salute. I told her to pull over

and text. That brought on a

torrent of abuse. I am sure her

    parents would have been so

    proud.

A while ago I was at Aurora

    shopping centre. As I was

walking towards the Spar, a 4x4

    parks in the disabled parking.

    Out jumps a perfectly healthy

    male. I approached him and

    asked him whether he realised

where he has parked. He stated

yes and when I asked him to

move he told me to (as this

is a family community paper I

    cannot exactly repeat what he

told me, but you can guess.)

The issue with disabled bays in

    shopping centres is that the

    owners are responsible to

    patrol this aspect. Well, what

    can I say.

Many years ago I made a

    suggestion to council that

    shopping centres cede (title

    Regarding the poor service at

    the licensing department in

    Milnerton (City doesnt work

    for me!, TB Milnerton, 11

    November.) I also waited for

    hours last week!

    When I enquired about the

    window for licence renewals

that was unattended and a long

queue waiting in front of it, an

    employee of the City answered

me with I think they are on a

    break.

How can an employee go on a

    tea break without someone

    relieving them when the whole

office is full of people waiting

    to be helped?

I agree, this is fourth world

service, but if you do not renew

    your licence, you will quickly

    receive a hefty fine. Double

    standards?

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Start saving

    water before

    its too late

The looming national water crisis is

closer to home than you may think.

South Africa is facing its worst drought

in over two decades and our clean water

    supply is under heavy strain.

    Local government has announced that

it may implement water savings targets

from as soon as next month and the

    provincial government is already looking

    at precautionary restrictions for areas

such as the Karoo and West Coast.

Its only a matter of time before Cape

Town starts feeling the pinch too.

It has a devastating effect on the

agricultural sector and well no doubt see

a rise in food prices and subsequently an

increase in the cost of living too. It

paints a gloomy picture for next year.

But there is something we can do now:

Save water. It sounds simple enough, but

every day we waste litres of water

    through carelessness.

Simple acts, such as ensuring your

pipes have no leaks and not watering

your garden or filling your pool during

the day, go a long way to saving water.

In fact, put away your hosepipe. Water

your plants with a watering can and

wash your car with a bucket youll be

conscious of how much water youre

using and save some in the process.

Dont leave taps running while washing

hands or brushing teeth, and shower

with purpose the time for leisurely long

    showers is over.

Saving water is our responsibility. We

need to start doing it right now saving

water when there is none is too late.

    The daunting issue about

that many times children are in

    banville ceramicist HennieMeyer and

architect Janine de Waal (which was

launched last year as a 2014 World Design

Capital project), was screened last week.

The premiere screening took place on

Thursday 5 November at the Labia Theatre

    in Cape Town.

Ukusela eKapa was an official World De-

sign Capital 2014 project in which people

squeezed a soft clay drinking cup (ikomityi)

to leave the imprint of their hand. They

wrote their first name and age on the base

    of the vessel.

More than 11 000 iikomityi were dis-

played in November last year in an installa-

tion by renowned land artist Strijdom van

der Merwe on the lawn of the Castle in Cape

Town, where people could choose an ikomi-

tyi their own, if they were lucky enough

to find it, or someone elses.

The idea was that the project will connect

people by shaking hands with a stranger

when they hold someone elses ikomityi.

    Ukusela eKapa,whichmeans DrinkCape

Town in, was a joint venture between Mey-

er and De Waal, both from Durbanville.

Visitors to Cape Town from elsewhere in

SouthAfrica and fromover 50 countries also

    took part in the project.

The film was made over a period of a year

at different places in the Cape Peninsula,

featuring various celebrities such as Des-

mond Tutu, Arch Thabo Makgoba, Alayne

Reesberg, Strijdom and Melanie van der

    events calendar.

The attendance this year was much bet-

ter than previous years. We were privileged

to have had more stalls and rides at the car-

nival, says Moosa Raise, event organiser.

The carnival was held on 7 and 8 November

on the Morningstar sports fields in De Villi-

    ers Avenue.

The mood was fantastic even though the

weather appeared to be dull and grey. We

had a live band on Friday night, as well as

Saturday. This was complimented by local

    hip hop talent, says
