neglected border collie in the middle

of nowhere was the inspiration for a

    fundraising cycling challenge over

480 km in less than 30 hours to raise

money for the sterilisation of animals.

A total of R30 000 was raised by the group

of 13 cyclists and four support drivers, all

from the northern suburbs, with the chal-

lenge of riding non-stop from Oudtshoorn

to Durbanville in under 30 hours all in aid

    of Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW).

The ride was organised by Durbanville

residents Neil and Belinda van Tonder, also

the organisers of the popular Durbie Dash

cycling event, as part of FAWs tenth anni-

    versary year.

Neil was inspired to organise the chal-

lenge by an experience he hadwhile partici-

pating in the seven-day Cape Pioneer.

In the middle of nowhere, we came

across a neglected border collie. I logged the

GPS co-ordinates and contacted Border Col-

lie Rescue, who rescued him. I have never

    forgotten this dog, he said.

    VanTonder, also a regular volunteerwith

FAW for over two years, said the sterilisa-

tion of dogs and cats in townships is FAWs

main area of focus as it is the best way to

combat animal neglect and abuse in the

long term. We, at FAW, would like to

thank each and every sponsor and donor,

the support drivers and especially the rid-

ers for their hard work. The difference this

is going to make is huge!

    However, according to subcouncil manager

Gerhard Fourie, he only became aware of the

application about a week before the subcoun-

    cil meeting on 16 May.

It came as a surprise, he said.

George Sieraha, chairperson of the Dur-

    banville Community Forum, confirmed to

TygerBurgerhe also did not receive notifica-

    tion of such an application.

No report from any line departments were

included in the report, which provoked a de-

bate at the subcouncil meeting. It was rec-

ommended that the report by Davids be de-

ferred to allow for the comment obtained

from line departments to be included in the

    report.

According to Fourie, if the updated report

is submitted in time, it can still serve at the

next subcouncilmeeting on 13 June for a rec-

ommendation, or else it will have towait un-

til after the municipal elections in August.

He said on enquiry this alienation of City

owned land is part of the process which the

    Citys property development department

started some years ago to identify pockets

of vacant land that could be earmarked for

    sale.

Small pockets of vacant land arenot via-

ble for housing, and those that are not ear-

marked for parks, sport facilities or park-

ing, can be sold off in the open market.

This item speaks to one of those vacant

properties. Due processes will be followed,

and all applications will be considered on

    their individual merits, he said.

Fourie added the vacant erf can also be

considered for overflow parking, and up to

now has been used for this purpose .

    Neilson said requests were received

from theMJC and theWCCMA, but it must

be noted that should the council decide to

dispose of this site, it will do so by public

tender and no organisation will be given

preference. The City does not give prefer-

ence to any religious group. Any land iden-

tified for social care purposes, which in-

cludes religious use, will need to be sold by

public tender to give all organisations an

    opportunity to apply.

The land would require a rezoning to

permit a place of worship, such as a

    mosque, church or synagogue.

Should the council approve the in-prin-

ciple disposal of the property for a place of

worship, due process will need to be fol-

lowed, and thiswill include a public partic-

ipation process, which is a legislative re-

quirement to consider the rezoning of the

property, prior to its disposal, Neilson

    said.

    Despite this, TygerBurger was informed

by a source that someone phoned the prop-

    erty management department about a

month ago, as well as about two weeks ago,

and in both instances was told by different

people at the department that amosquewill

    be built on the land.

The source is known by TygerBurger, but

they prefer not to become further involved

due to the sensitivity of the matter.

The MJC is looking for land to build a

    mosque, TygerBurger was told.

The Durbanville town hall was used for Is-

lamic prayer on Friday afternoons from

    12:00 to 14:00 from13September 2014 to 26 De-

    cember 2014.

    TheMoslem community has beenmoved

to the Morningstar community hall from

January 2015 due to major upgrades taking

place at the Durbanville town hall, Belinda

    Walker, mayoral committee member for

    community services, said on enquiry.

The users were people of the community

and those who worked in Durbanville. We

are aware of between 50 to 60 people using

the facility for prayers, she said.

In the meantime, the New Apostolic

Church, which was built in 1999, is unaware

of this application and is busy negotiating

with the same department (the property

management department), for the lease of

the same land to use for overflow parking on

    a Sunday.

    TygerBurger has e-mail communication

as recent as 12May in which the churchwas

    asked to submit more information.

According to Kenny Kotze, the church

wrote a letter to the council on 21 April to

request to lease the land for extra parking

on a Sunday, when between 450 to 500 people

    attend the Sunday service.

We will not have a problem with a

mosque next to us. I do not think it will have

any impact on the way we worship, but it

may affect the residential area, aswell as the

clinic regarding parking on Fridays, he

    said.

    Tonder. PHOTO: JENNI DAVIES

    told TygerBurger in a letter.

The 19-year-old girl, who is known to

TygerBurger but wants to stay anony-

mous, said in her letter she left school

    last year while

    she was in matric

    after she was in

    an accident, and

    missed a lot of

    school. She en-

    rolled at Study

    Xpress this year

    to complete her

    matric, but left

    after a month aft-

    er shewas disillu-

    sioned by the set-

up. I was in a classroom with ten other

people, both in Grade 11 and 12, and they

played 30 Seconds orUno for five hours.

On the third day of attending the

school, she was asked to write an Afri-

kaans test. I was busy with it for about

two hours, while it was a one-hour test.

While writing my test I was also told I

could go on a lunch break to just relax

or play on my phone. I came to school

    to work, not to play.

There were scheduled tests and if we

decided we werent ready we would tell

the facilitator not today and it would be

    rescheduled. We had two-hour lunch

breaks in our five-hour school day.

When we applied, I was promised a

teacher for each subject, who will physi-

cally stand in the front of the classroom

teaching that it is not merely a situation

where a teacher is watching over the

    class, she said.

Her mother made the full payment of

R41 186 to Study Xpress on 22 February.

After about only two weeks my mom

and I had already seen their promises to

be lies. To be what I want to be when I

    leave school I

    have to do pure

    mathematics,

    physical scien-

    ces and engineer-

    ing, graphics and

    design. Insteadof

    learning, we

    were kept quiet

    byplayingonour

    phones, listening

    to music and

    chatting. For the

month I was there I was not taught a sin-

gle thing. I didnt even have all my text-

books. I had no teachers for these sub-

jects as Study Xpress told us they were

still looking for teachers, she said.

My mom agreed this was dodgy and

set up a meeting with the owner. We set

up three meetings and each one he

    missed.

Ever since she left Study Xpress and

despite promises of a full refund, they

are still battling to get theirmoneyback.

He has now not only messed up my

plans to complete matric; I now have to

wait yet another year to do it, she said.

    Study Xpress kids

    told to play games

    Whilewritingmy

    test Iwas also told I

    can go on a lunch

    break to just relax or

iemand is nog aangekeer in verband

met die afbrand van die klubhuis van

    die rugbyklub in Fisantekraal nie.

Volgens lt. Marchell Rhode van die Dur-

banville-polisie is die skeepshouer op die

sportvelde in Lords Walk, waarin die klub-

huis gehuisves was, op 26 April tussen 13:00

en 13:30 deur n onbekende man aan die

    brand gesteek.

Die skeepshouer ter waarde van R250 000

    is verwoes.

    porteer.

    hy ges.

    Kaapstad sekerheidsdienste by sportterrei-

vandaliseer. Die koperpype is gesteel en die

toilette gebreek en die panne uitgedra.

    Study Xpress contract cancelled

    ESM ERASMUS

    @erasmusesme

    T

he contract of all Study Xpress tutor

centres was cancelled last week by the

curriculum supplier Impak due to ill

    payment and several recent unsettling

events at Study Xpress centres and the nega-

tive impact they could have on your childs

education, parents at Study Xpress in Dur-

banville were notified in a letter from Im-

    pak.

The doors of Study Xpress in Durbanville

and Tokai were closed overnight about two

weeks ago by the owners, Ivan Grobler and

his wife, Chantelle, leaving 115 learners

    without a school.

This came after all their tutors resigned

at once after they have not been paid for

three months and several allegations of ill

    conduct.

Their lease agreement for the building on

    the corner ofDeVilliersDrive andWellington

Road has been cancelled, while several char-

ges of fraud against Study Xpress are being

    investigated by police.

Impak has also instituted collection steps

against StudyXpress for outstanding funds of

    about R200 000.

Despite all this, TygerBurger was told that

Grobler last Friday enquired about the letting

of a premise in Durbanville. He introduced

himself as the owner of Study Xpress, accord-

    ing to a source.

The closure of Study Xpress left many par-

ents in the lurch. They are desperately trying

to find other schools for their children.

Others were shocked to find that their chil-

dren have never been registered with the

    Western Cape Education Department

(WCED) and that there are no records of them

    on the system at all.

In terms of the Schools Act every child

under the age of 16 must be registered as

a home education learner with the WCED.

One dismayed parent found that her

daughter was behind in her school work to

such an extent that she was put in a lower

    grade at another school.

It was also found that in many cases no

money that was paid to Study Xpress was

paid over to Impak thus no records of

    those students exist either.

One of these parents is now claiming

R15 000 in the Bellville small claims court

    to recover her costs.

According to the mother she will get a

court date on Wednesday 1 June.

She said she paid R8 000 in October last

year for registration and text books, but her

two children only received their text books

    way into the new year.

Her daughter only received her text book

for tourism two days before she took her

daughter out of Study Xpress on Friday 6

May. According to the mother, who wants

to stay anonymous, she also paid R6 000 per

month for her childrens tutoring since 31

    December.

But now, at their new tutoring centre, to

which they must drive from Durbanville to

Somerset West every day, they were found

to be so behind with their work that they

now need extra tutoring at R1200 per day for

    three hours for both.

Also, it seems that Study Xpress never reg-

istered her Grade 10 daughter for either

    tourismor computer applications technolo-

gy with Impak, although she paid for those

    subjects.

They (the new tutor centre) want my

daughter to quit consumer studies, because

she had not done any of the practical work

at all, while her aptitude tests indicated

that shemust followacareer in the consum-

    er industry.

    Theynever did anypracticalwork. Iwas

promised that an ovenwas bought, but that

it must just be installed. This was all a lie.

I even offered that the children can do their

practical work in my own kitchen, she

    said.

Her son inGrade 11 had towrite his infor-

    mation technology and computer applica-

    tions technology examinations in March

while henever received any tutoring in any

of the subjects due to the absence of a

    tutor.

Our lives are so disrupted by this; I shall

never forgive them forwhat they have done

    to my children, she said.

This is one of at least four claims pending

at the small claims court TygerBurger is

    aware of.

Last Tuesday afternoon Grobler paid the

full claim amount of R6 676 less than an

hour before the hearing of a claim against

Study Xpress in the Bellville small claims

    court.

RenHerbst, a former tutor andoneof the

parents who originally blowed the whistle

on Study Xpress, claimed back the deposit

she paid in September last year, as well as

the first instalment. She took her child out

of Study Xpress on Wednesday 3 February.

Grobler briefly appeared in court, where-

after the commissioner of the court dis-

    missed the case, said Herbst.

Two more parents claim amounts of re-

    spectively R4 107 and R12 600 for registra-

tion and tuition fees paid while the tutor

centre was found to be operating illegally

by theWCED. A court date must still be an-

    nounced.

In the letter by Impak dated Tuesday 17

May, itwas stated that as of today, Impaks

contract with all Study Xpress centres, as

    currently registered under Ivan Grobler,

    have been cancelled and suspended.

These centres will no longer be serviced

    by Impak.

Impak offered parents, who want their

child to continue studying through Impak,

an interim arrangement for the remainder

of 2016 at a discount of 40% on the full year

    package fee.

    Germari Pieterse, chief financial officer

of Impak, confirmed that their agreement

with Study Xpress has been cancelled and

    they have instituted collection steps.

    Impak currently engages directly with

    affected parents. Special arrangements to

    accommodate these parents and learners

have been made to ensure as little disrup-

tion to the learners as possible.

Impak is in the process of reregistering

learners directly and without the interven-

tion of any third party such as this centre,

    she said.

    According to Julian Taylor, franchise

owner of the Study Xpress in Bellville, he

    has cancelled his contractwithGrobler and

will soon change the name of his tutor cen-

    tre.

. Grobler did not comment by the time

of going to press on any of the allegations.

His cell phone also seemed to be blocked for

incoming calls, as it only gave an engaged

    soundwhenphoned several times since last

week, while on WhatsApp it shows that he

    is online, using his phone.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Nou kan ek s

    ek voel dit

    saammet jou

So het my ma altyd haar kinders

    vermaan. Let op die waarskuwingstekens

    voordat jy iets aanpak.

    As koerantmens moet ons gedurig

waarsku: Moenie oor daardie brug stap

nie. Wees versigtig as jy by daardie

    kruising stilhou.

    Weens n sameloop van omstandighede

moes ek vandeesweek oor n brug stap

in my rugsak en my beursie in my

    gatsak.

Minute later is ek sonder my geld,

selfoon, trouring en die werk se kamera

nadat twee jongens my beroof het.

Het ek my ma se vuur-waarskuwing

    verontagsaam? Het ek my verhewe

    gehou bo die mense

    wat elke dag

    sonder keuse oor

    di brug mt stap?

    Of was dit n

    geval van dit

    gebeur net met

    ander mense?

    Ek het een keer

    di aanhaling

    gehoor: Dit sal

    my verslaggewing daardie gevoel van

    magteloosheid, weerloosheid en vrees

wanneer wildvreemde mense beslag l op

    jou eiendom.

loop? Ja. Moes ek, by nabetragting,

eerder n ander roete gekies het? Jip.

Is my gevoel van veiligheid onder my

voete uitgeruk deur skermunkels wat net

op soek is na hul volgende fix?

In hierdie stadium sien ek almal as

    verdagtes.

Maar ek hoop hierdie ervaring sal my

    gevoel. Brenden Ruiter

    interest, and agree wholeheart-

edly that the fraudulent use of

    disabled parking bays must be

    punished and the drivers fined

    heavily.

    I am a healthy, able-bodied

    59-year-old. My husband and I

    moved to Durbanville about a

    year ago, with my 87-year-old

    mother who suffers from

    severe osteoporosis, and can

only walk if she wears a back

    brace, uses her walking stick

and uses a shop basket trolley

    for support.

She does not need to go out

often, as we provide all her

needs, but every now and then,

its just nice to see the world

outside her room, and this is

never for long, as she tires

    quickly.

    On recommendation of our

    doctor, we applied for a

    disabled parking disc when we

    still lived on the Atlantic

    Seaboard, and were granted it

    twice. Her last licence expired

in March of this year, and we

have stopped using it, for fear

of getting a fine. A new

    application was made at the

    Durbanville Traffic Depart-

    ment. We complied with all

    requested documents, but our

    application was denied. The

reason given that old age is

not a disability, and, since the

doctor stated that she can get

in and out of the car unaided,

    was reason enough not to

    grant this disc.

    I was shocked and disap-

    pointed. My mother gave up

driving her own car some five

    years ago, due to failing

    eyesight and troubles with her

    back: she battles to reverse

    park and very sensibly feels

    that she should no longer

    drive. Thanks to the Traffic

    Department, she will now see

even less of our new and

    beautiful surroundings. We are

all so very happy on this side

    of the boerewors-gordyn but

this left us all bitterly disap-

    and 60s.

    His estate does not mention

ellville director Uga Carlini will be in

the spotlight next week when she pre-

miers her new film Alison the Movie at

    the Encounters International Film Festival.

Basedon thebook I have life:Alisons Jour-

neyas told toMarianneThamm, the film tells

the true-life story of Alison Botha who was

raped, stabbed and disembowelled, but sur-

vived to rebuild her life as an inspirational

    speaker.

The movie is also Ugas debut hybrid fea-

ture film/documentary which sees her tell-

ing Alisons story using a mixture of fairy

tale idiom and unflinching frankness and

putting real-life heroes from that night

alongside actors like another Bellville local,

Christia Visser who plays a young Alison,

Zak Hendrikz, De Klerk Oelofse and Fran-

    cois Maree.

    Uga, from Towerkop Creations, specialis-

es in female driven heroine stories so there

could be no higher honour for her than to

make her debut feature film about one of

    South Africas most loved heroines.

This is the first time Alison has ever al-

lowed cameras into her home, and Uga not

only tells the story of her brutal experience,

but also shows the audience what she has

    done and become since.

With this in mind, Penguin, the publish-

ers behind the top selling I have Life, have

partnered with the film team to release a

film tie-in edition of the book with a new

chapter that also looks at Alisons life since

the books first publication in 1998.

Alison has already been dubbed a story

of monsters, miracles and hope. While the

movie will enjoy its cinema release in Au-

gust, it will be screened for the first time at

    the Encounters International Documentary

Film Festival which takes place at the V&A

    Waterfronts CinemaNoveau and The Labia

Theatre fromThursday 2 to Sunday 12 June.

Uga, Alison and actress Christia will

launch the new edition of I have life at Cine-

ma Noveau from 18:45 on Friday 3 June be-

fore hosting a Q&A session where theyll be

joined byMarianne Thamm at The Labia on

    Tuesday 7 June from 20:30.

V Visit www.encounters.co.za for more information

about the film festival. Tickets are available from

    ie Kuilsrivier-polisie ondersoek tans

altesaam 20 klagte van bedrog wat by

    die polisiekantoor aangemeld is se-

    dert Januarie vanjaar.

    Die sakehouglo verbandmet aanlyn-ver-

    kope waarin die misdadigers verskeie

    soort items op fGumtree fOLXadverteer

en aan mense verkoop. n Transaksie word

aangegaan en betaling gemaak, maar die

item self bereik nooit die koper nie.

    Kapt.

loop, s Van Niekerk. Hy s tot dusver is

daar n reeks sulke gevalle in die Kuilsri-

    vier-polisie-gebied aangemeld.

    Die betrokkemisdadigers sit egter inJo-

hannesburg, vertel hy. Hy s die bankre-

kening wat geskep word en waarin slagof-

fers geld inbetaal, word geopen, maar weer

gesluit sodra betaling ontvang is. Vals do-

kumente word gebruik om die rekeninge te

skep en inmeeste gevalleword dit by banke

    in Johannesburg geopen.

    Verskeie soortgelyke aanlyn-transaksies

Daar

    is oorgenoeg redeswaaromkamp in diewin-

ter n fantastiese ervaring kan wees.

    1. Soete stilte

tref enige ander ervaring daarvan: n dood-

se, amper verslawende swye wat nie eers

    deur zoemendebyeof ritselendeblare bederf

word nie. Die aarde slaap, en jy word genooi

    om saam te kom rus.

    2. Kampvuur-kuiers

    me gevoer.

minder vrolik.

    ker.

    5. Kyk net daai sterre!

    Minder mede-kampeerders beteken minder

lig rondom jou.

hemelruim verskyn. Sit n mus op, dra jou

slaapsak buitentoe en verkyk jou aan die

    melkweg in magiese stilte.

tien jou tone sonder vriesbrandweer tuis sal

besorg.

    7. Spog so bietjie

pronk gerus so bietjie met jou buitelugavon-

    ture.

    iewinterkan nbaie spesiale tydwees

om die buitelug in te vaar. Kampeer-

terreine is stiller en rustiger, en die

omgewing is dikwelsmooier as in die somer.

as jy uitspan. Hier is n paar wenke vanaf

Popular Mechanics en Clymb-tydskrif vir n

    veilige, genotvolle winterkampervaring.

    Trek lae aan

Jy wil warm aangetrek wees wanneer jy on-

aktief is, maar terwyl jy bergklim of stap,

skep jou liggaam genoeg hitte. Trek dus lae

    aan. Begin met termiese polisteronderkle-

re as jou basislaag. Trek n vliestop wat lek-

ker asemhaal bo-oor aan sodat jy warm bly

sonder om te veel te sweet. Laastens, het jy

n lekker dik water- en windbestande baad-

jie nodig vir ekstra koue weer. Omdat jy

ste laag klere vuurbestand is. Voeg n serp

    by vir ekstra hitte.

Trek n wol- of vliesmus oor jou ore. Los

stap ontwerp is. Enmaak seker jou stapskoe-

    ne is waterdig.

Sorg ekstra mooi vir jou hande

Hou jou vingers warm deur twee lae hand-

skoene te dra: een paar polister voering-

handskoene met n dikker paar bo-oor. Hou

wees as die son begin sak.

Soek n kampplek waar jy lekker oggendson

kan kry. Bepaal waar die eerste strale met

sonsopkoms gaan val en draai jou tent in

daardie rigting om ten volle voordeel daar-

uit te trek. Onthou net ook om jou tent teen

    die wind beskut te hou.

    Water, water en nog water

Jy gaan dalk nie so dors soos in die somer

Sooswat jy saans in jouwarm tent asemhaal

iewers veilig in jou tent hang. Laasgenoem-

de sal nie net kondensasie verminder nie,

    maar ook ekstra hitte voorsien.

    Gaan slaap in jou klere

Klim nt so vuil

    warm.

Litiumbatterye vaar beter as alkaliese batte-
