Lt. Marchell Rhode van die Dur-

    banville-polisie het ges niemand

is nog in verband met die voorval

    in hegtenis geneem nie.

kies is as landwye wenner van 2015 se ACT

    Dalro Nedbank Performing Arts-beurs ter

    waarde van R150 000. Altesame 776 inskry-

    wings is vanjaar ontvang.

    wys is.

    Syhet ookdeelgeneemaankykNETseNa-

    TV-reeks Binnelanders.

Sy het kleintyd reeds begin drama neem

by Veronica Geldenhuys se Kamalielie Ka-

    malollie-dramaskool; daarna in die Laer-

skool Durbanville se dramagroep onder lei-

    ding van Annelie Fourie.

Ek wou net nog altyd sing of dans of dra-

    my ouers en familie gehou.

Ek dank my Liewe Vader dat Hy my daar-

    In haar horskooljare in verhoogproduk-

    produksie.

de aktrise by die ATKV-eindronde in Pot-

chefstroom aangewys, en het die toeken-

ning as beste aktrise by die Namakwaland-

    toneelfees op Fraserburg ontvang.

Haar mees onlangse gunsteling was die

skool se Sewe Deugde, nee minder ... deur

    Francois Toerien.

skok. My ouers is my grootste ondersteu-

    my moes betaal!

Carla is die oudste dogter van dr. Christo

Smith, bekende algemene praktisyn in Dur-

    banville, en Estela Smith.

Behalwe dat my ma ons heeldag rondry,

    is sy n entrepreneur. Syhet n suster,Maja

(14), wat ook drama neem, en kleinboet Ju-

an-Christoff Smith (4). Hy drama nog net

    by die huis, skerts sy.

Oor vyf jaar sien sy haarself as meesters-

bedryf. Oor 10 jaar dink sy daaraan om n

restaurant te begin waar kunstenaars hul

talente kan komwys maar ek kannounie

al my idees hier weggee nie, want ek beplan

gekry, maar my program was te vol!

Sy is gaande oor koorsang enhoubaie van

    koor- enklassiekemusiek enhet sedert laer-

skool koor gesing. Sy het ook in die Tyger-

berg-kinderkoor gesing, en is nou gekeur

    vir Stellenbosch se universiteitskoor!

    Ek ismal oor fliekskyk.Ekversamelmu-

    sicals, my gunsteling-televisiereeks is

Friends en Frasier en my gunsteling-musi-

    kant is Paolo Nutini.

Haar mede-wenners in 2015 se ACT Dalro

    Nedbank PerformingArts-beurskompetisie

was Caleb Heynes en Andiswa Mbolekwa.

    Hulle het beursgeld van onderskeidelik

    R105 000 en R60 000 gewen.

    Drama het haar

    gekies, s Carla

o licence disc renewal noticeswere is-

sued in September and October and

    manymotorists nowhave to pay fines

for late renewals because they were not no-

tified. This is because of the National De-

partment of Transports (DOT) transfer of

    the ElectronicNational Traffic Information

System (eNaTIS) to the Road Traffic Man-

    agement Centre.

    TheCitysMaycomember for finance, Ian

Neilson, has now called on DOT and the

Road Traffic Management Centre to sort

this problem out before November, which,

he says, is traditionally the busiest month

of the year for vehicle disc renewals.

Motorists are normally issued with re-

newal notices three to fourweeks before the

expiry date on the current licence disc. Li-

cence discs that expire on 31 October will

    be renewable until 21 November.

    Nielsenurgesmotorists to act proactively

to ensure that the necessary arrangements

aremade and to renew discs online at http:/

    /goo.gl/Kql0tT.

Under the Motor Vehicle Licensing tab,

click on register (for newapplicants) or lo-

gin (for those already registered for e-Ser-

vices). You will be prompted to complete an

online registration form and will be re-

    quired to upload thenecessary documents.

    The applicationprocess takes threework-

ing days for new applicants and two work-

ing days for applicants who are already reg-

    istered

He says the Citys call centre can be

phoned on 0860 103 089 to find out the

    amount owing.

    Alternatively, motorists can visit their

    nearest vehicle licensing office.

    Take your identity document, complete

a green Application for Licencing of Motor

Vehicle form (ALV form), and renew your

licence at the counter, Neilsen says.

Here to sing all their hits: Legendary

Dutch band BZN, with lead singers Jan Keizer

and Anny Schilder, will be singing all the hits

that made BZN a household name in South

Africa in the eighties at the LiquiFruit

Amphitheatre in Paarl on 31 October. The

songlist includes many BZN classics and of

course Mon Amour, the song that started it

all. BZN have over 50 hits on the Dutch

charts to date, and they are the only music

act with top 40 hit singles for 26 consecu

tive years (19731998), and recorded more

than thirty albums. Tickets for BZN The

    What is the problem with

    residents who, after their bins

    have been emptied, ignore the

    rubbish which has been left

    behind and littering the

    pavements after the homeless

    people have ravaged their

bins? Yes, I realise it is not the

residents who put it there but

    surely we should all have

    enough pride in our communi-

ty to pick it up and put it back

in our bins? The dustbin men

do not have time to clean up

as they move down the street,

yet it only takes a few minutes

for homeowners to do so. The

    results are obvious rubbish

and debris are left to blow

    about in the wind.

I wonder too, just how many

people take the time to clean

out their dirty bins? I so often

    pass many bins which are

    filthy and very unhygienic.

    Summer is coming and so

are the flies. Lets do our bit.

I reside in one of the one-way

avenues in Boston. I find it

    quite disturbing how many

    motorists ignore this traffic

rule by racing down the wrong

    direction in these avenues.

    These one-way blocks are

there for a good reason and are

    important for residents who

    live in these blocks.

We go to the trouble to travel

around the block to be law

    abiding and in consideration

    for others safety. We enter

    these blocks from the correct

    direction, only to be confronted

by a motorist speeding from the

    front, from the wrong direction.

I am amazed at the ignorance

of basic traffic rules by these

people, and we are so quick to

    point at the corrupt government

    and crime.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Our driving

    behaviour

    should change

While Transport Month (October) is an

initiative by the South African govern-

ment to create awareness about the

impact of transport on the economy, its

also a good time to highlight issues

    around road safety.

According to a report by the Road

    Traffic Management Corporation, roughly

40 people die on South African roads

every day. There were around 1 368

fatalities over the 2014/2015 festive season

    alone.

The sad reality about this high number

of deaths is the fact that road accidents

    can often be avoided.

    The Automobile Association of South

Africa (AA)s top road safety tip is

always wearing a seatbelt. A close second

is: Never drink and drive. They do

point out however that pedestrians who

are above the legal alcohol limit are just

    as vulnerable as motorists.

Another cause of road deaths is fatigue.

The AA suggests safety breaks every two

hours when travelling long distances to

avoid eye strain and tiredness which

affects a drivers ability to focus.

A few simple changes in our driving

behaviour, especially as we head into the

festive season, could be the major differ-

ence between being involved in an

accident or arriving at your destination

    safely.

While its easy to say Im in a hurry

or its just around the corner, one has

to ask: Is it really worth the risk not to

take a few seconds to make sure you

    arrive safely?

Bat School for the Deaf in Worces-

ter to nominate him to this pro-

    gramme.

    The fifth annualNelsonMandela

    Childrens Parliament congregat-

ed in the Free State Legislature

from 5 to 7October to tackle a num-

ber of serious issues pertaining to

    the protection of children.

    Those included forced childmar-

riages, the death of young boys in

initiation schools, and girls due to

illegal abortions, as well as vio-

    lence in schools.

    Huge step for deaf people

    For Jean-Claude, this was the

    ideal opportunity to correct mis-

    conceptions the public have about

    deaf people.

Being deaf and having deaf par-

ents, this is really a huge step for-

ward for me as well as other deaf

    people, especially deaf kids who

now know anything is possible. In

    South Africa many people view

deafness as an illness and some-

thing that needs to be fixed. But

now I can stand up and say this is

not true. As a deaf person I have

    many opportunities and

    can participate in many

things. I am not afraid to

show that I can do any-

    thing, he says.

    He describes the Chil-

    drens Parliament as an

    amazing opportunity for

    children to learn what gov-

    ernance is all about.

    During these few days

    we participated in several

    commissions and identified

    many problems within our

    schools. Kids from all the

    provinceswere represented

    and it was enlightening to

    see that communities all

    over the country are afflict-

    ed by similar problems.

    Drug abuse, teenage preg-

    nancies and gangsterism

    are plaguing our youth and

Iwould like to see the adults

    at parliament take us as

    children seriously, he

    says.

    The issues discussed over

    the two-day session were

    drawn up into a declaration

    and signed and Jean-Claude

is quick to add that this dec-

    laration should not just be

seen as a piece of paper, and

that it was drawn up for a

    reason.

    The Childrens Parlia-

ment is a key programme of

    Social Development Month

    (October), hosted by the De-

    partment of Social Develop-

    ment to provide a platform

    for children to participate

    in democracy to be seen

    and heard, explains Lumka Oliph-

    ant, spokesperson of the depart-

    ment.

    And Jean-Claude is adamant

    that these rights be obligated.

    I believe that change startswith

us, the youth of South Africa. It

will not help if we sit back andwait

for others to do the work. All of us

    should work together towards the

    same goal, no matter who

    you are,where you live or

    what language you

    speak, he says.

I might be deaf, but not

    dumb

    He also said he wanted

    to focus on helping chil-

    dren who face challenges

    at home.

    Many children are ex-

    posed to bad things in

    their homes, like abuse

    and parents who abuse

    drugs and alcohol. These

    children then bring their

    experiences to school

    leading to bullying, peer

    pressure and the forma-

    tion of gangs in schools.

    We therefore need to find

    ways to improve the

    home environment be-

    cause that is where most

    problems start.

    Lumka says the out-

    come of the Childrens

    Parliament will now be

    incorporated into ongo-

    ing planning for the ad-

    vancement of childrens

    rights.

    In his free time, Jean-

    Claude loves playing

    sports such as swimming

and golf and like any oth-

er kid his age, he also

    loves technology.

    I think it is important

for deaf kids to be able to

    use technology. We are

    normal like any other

    person, but because hear-

    ing people cannot communicate

with us, some think we are deaf

and dumb. We can read and write

other languages and we can speak

    with our hands!

    First deaf Speaker elected

JeanClaude Smit during the parliamentary sessions.

Die doel van die vereniging is die

    kweek en vermeerdering, die ver-

die rand van uitwissing, s Johan

    Kotze, woordvoerder van die ver-

    eniging.

    Tuingeesdriftiges wat broodbo-

    in bewaring.

    Die verskeidenheid spesies wat

vanjaar te koop aangebied word, is

    besonder indrukwekkend en die

meeste van die inheemse spesies is

    beskikbaar. Skaars bloublaarplan-

Die publiek het dus hier werk-

lik die geleentheid om baie skaars

plante teen uiters billike pryse op

n wettige manier te bekom. Deur

broodbome in tuine aan te plant

    word hul voortbestaan verseker.

    Om verskeie redes word die

    voortbestaan van broodbome in

    die natuur bedreig, onder meer

    deur versamelaars wat plante on-

wettig uit die natuur verwyder, s

    Die dag bied uitstekende geleent-

Nie net lede van die broodboom-

    Toegang tot die verkoopperseel

is gratis. Lede van die vereniging

word toegelaat om plante teen 5%

van hul omset te verkoop. Nie-lede

is verplig om 10% van hul omset

    The Family Mediators Associa-

tion of the Cape (Famac) is offering

a free mediation week from 26 to

    30 October.

    Divorcing and separating cou-

ples often want to avoid contested

    court proceeding, but in the

    strained circumstances it is often

impossible for the couple to work

    things out on their own.

    A cheaper alternative to consid-

    er is mediation.

    It is usually much quicker,

cheaper and less stressful than the

legal route, and seven out of ten

people are able to reach full agree-

    ment. During freemediationweek,

a family mediation session can be

tried for free, whether they qualify

    for legal aid or not.

The mediator will work with the

couple to reduce conflict by help-

ing them consider the issues to be

settled and the options available to

    them to facilitate an agreement.

    They help couples work towards

    Workout, blankets and awedding

    Teams fighting off wrestlers.

    DESIRE RORKE

    @dezzierorke

    A

    gym workout in Brackenfell,

    washing blankets in Bloek-

    ombos and arranging tables

    for awedding inBellvillewereonly

a few of the tasks teamshad to com-

plete in a recent charity race.

    Dubbed the Amazing GRace and

similar in format to the actual tele-

vision show, the objectives of this

race were quite different to en-

    gage with communities and non-

    profit organisations, while doing

    some good and having fun.

Hosted for the third time this

year by local NPO HewLin Com-

    passion, in collaboration with the

    WesternCape Street Childrens Fo-

    rum (WCSCF), of which HewLin

Compassion is a member, the race

    kicked off at Willowbridge Centre

    last Saturday.

    Thirteen teams

The WCSF is a vibrant, high-im-

    pact network that represents pro-

    fessional street children organisa-

    tions in the Western Cape.

Each of the 13 teams of four

members each, made up of mem-

bers of the community, had to visit

    different pit-stops around the

    northern suburbs of Cape Town

where they had to either render a

    service or complete a challenge,

says Hewitt de Jager, co-founder of

    HewLin Compassion.

    After the opening ceremony,

teams had to overcome their first

    obstacle at the Olympians Acade-

my in Bellville, where Wendy Bos-

se aims to introduce and promote

    Olympic sport to the historically

    disadvantaged youth in the West-

ern Cape as a counter measure to

    gangsterism, substance abuse and

    involvement in crime.

Four of their youth formed part

of the opening obstacle, where con-

testants had to run a gauntlet of

    wrestlers, says De Jager.

From here teams raced to Virgin

    ActiveCapeGatewhereRalphPiet-

    ers and Mornay Richardson facili-

    tated the second obstacle.

Contestants had to row on ma-

chines, score goals and skip ropes

in order to advance, says De Ja-

    ger.

    This obstacle was designed to

    promote the TLC Network, by

    which Lorna Rutter empowers and

    trains children in impoverished

    communities.

    In Bloekombos we visited the

    Siviwe Crche, where different

tasks were divided amongst the 13

    teams. These included washing

    andcleaningblankets, floors,walls

    and windows, he says.

    At Shonaquip, an organisation

    committed to improving the quali-

ty of life of children living with se-

    vere disabilities by designing,

    manufacturing and supplying mo-

    bility and postural support equip-

    ment, contestants had to assemble

    stimulation kits for this organisa-

    tion.

    Cleaning the streets

From here the teams visited Ons

Plek, a shelter for girls in Cape

Town, where they handed out fly-

ers to the public and then joined

the VRCIDwhere they had to clean

    the streets.

The VRCID aims to create and

maintain a clean and safe urban

    environment along the Voortrek-

    ker Road Corri-

    dor, says De Ja-

    ger.

    Drivers of each

    team received

    waste bags and

gloves, and had to clean allocated

    areas in Bellvillewhile their teams

    raced toward them using public

    transport (taxis) from Woodstock

    to Bellville.

    Promoting the activities of

MES, teams had to sell MES meal

    booklets anywhere in the northern

suburbs and return with the mon-

    ey, says De Jager.

    MES is a non-profit organisation

that has served the homeless and

    destitute community of inner cit-

    ies in South Africa 1986.

The race culminated at the Col-

lective Arts Theatre (CAT) in Bell-

ville, where teams had to prepare

the wedding venue for a couple

about to tie theknot that afternoon,

    unbeknownst to the unsuspecting

    team members.

    Theatre for the people

    This theatre offers a platform

for up and coming artists to show-

case their work, says De Jager.

    Manager Gavin Wright, artist,

actor and also stage designer and

team director on the day, says his

goal with the theatre is to offer a

venue to local artists to practice

their acting skills. Helping to cre-

ate the wedding venue was an

    added bonus.

When I took on the CAT

    project, the most important thing

to me besides the renovations that

    had tobedone,was tobeable to cre-

ate a space within which the bud-

    dingamateur acting society ofBell-

    ville and surrounds can flourish.

Currently it is mostly very expen-

sive for them to train elsewhere,

and my hope is that the CAT will

    becomeanartistic home for them,

    he said.

    A huge success

De Jager says this years GRace

was a huge success in terms of

    reaching its core objectives.

    The community that took part

had the opportunity to be exposed

to a world they are not familiar

    with. More importantly they

learned that the work done every

day by all these organisations is

part of a greater strategy, which is

    compromised when members of

the public, in sheer ignorance, but

    with good intentions, assist street

people. If you want to help, rather

get involved as a volunteer in any

    of these organisations.

At the last pit stop, blushing bride Michelle Linnert married her beau Heinrich Jansen.

Teams during the workout at Virgin Active CapeGate.
