Sports clubs in Durbanville are upset af-ter the City of Cape Town has – withonly a two week notice period – dictat-

ed the implementation of a book, pay andplay system for the use of their facilities“from 1 July”.The effect of this system will be that clubs

will no longer have control over “their” fa-cilities andwill have to pre-book and pay forthe use of their “own” playing fields and fa-cilities for practising, matches and any oth-er events, based on a tariff system.These sports clubs are also already paying

the city forwater and electricity on amonth-ly basis.

The systemhas been implemented all overthe city “to institute equitable service deliv-ery and effective use of facilities”, it wassaid.

ActionThe decision to implement the systemwas

approved by the city’s sports and recreationportfolio committee to be rolled out fromFebruary 2012 already, but it was never ac-tioned by city officials.Until now, sports clubs were more or less

in control of their facilities, although theland belonged to the city.In most instances, the clubs built their

own clubhouses and did maintenance workto their facilities themselves.

The problem the clubs have with this sys-tem is that if the facility has not been bookedand paid for in advance, the city will havethe right to book out the facility to other in-stitutions and organisations who requirethe use of it.All bookings shall be done via a booking

office and in liaison with the local city offi-cial responsible for the facility.

City-ownedIn a letter to the districtmanagers of sport,

recreation and amenities of the city in June,the executive director of community servic-es, Lokiwe Mtwazi, stated that “the city isstill the owner of the facilities”.“No other authority or organisation can

assume this right, nor havewe as a city abdi-cated this right,” she said.However, the system has not yet been im-

plemented in Durbanville pending a meet-ing of the City’ sports and recreation depart-ment with all sports clubs in Durbanvilleand surrounds.Charles Clacher, chairperson of the Dur-

banville Sports Complex Facilities Manage-ment Committee (FMC), said in his chair-person’s report at the annual general meet-ing held at the Durbanville Rugby Club on31 July that the book, pay and play systemwill not be implemented in Durbanville be-fore a meeting has been held with all roleplayers.

existed since 1953, built its own clubhouse.“Most of the improvementswere also fundedby the club itself, such as the enlargementof its C field over three years from2003,” saidDr De Vries Basson, chairperson.“The club is already paying for water and

electricity, which amounts to R5 000 toR6 000 per month. It will have a massive im-pact on the club if we have to start paying

for every time we use the facilities as well,”he said.An artificial pitch for junior players has

been built by the club at a cost of R12 000.“We will now have to hire it from the cityif we want to use it,” Basson said.The club has this year been chosen as the

Western Province’s club of excellence of theyear out of 69 clubs and also has extensiveyouth developmental programmes in place.“We are unable to attract a main sponsor

due to lease agreements not being in place,but have to rely on small sponsorships andmembership fees. A lot of our players are un-employed,” he said.The Durbanville Hockey Club hopes to

build an astro field soon, but apart from nothaving landmade available by the city to theclub yet, the possibility of having to renttheir ownR5million astro turf from the city,makes the club reconsider.“It could mean the end of the Durbanville

Hockey Club if we do not build an astro fieldsoon, as this is the direction the sportmoves.“We will not be able to afford to rent the

facilities we build at our own cost, from thecity. The building of an astro field can bejeopardised if we shall not have full accessto it,” said Garth Hobbs, chairperson of theDurbanville Hockey Club.The club, which has about 400 members,

celebrates its 50th birthday in 2016.“Our club has been able to operate inde-

pendently over the years with fundraisingand has done plenty of maintenance out ofits own.”Hobbs said the city needs to look at sports

facilities in general as Durbanville has ex-panded in the last five to 10 years. The sportsfacilities cannot accommodate everybody.It is not possible to pre-book the fields six

months ahead, as fixtures change everyweek. “We also try to have as manymatcheson astro fields as possible,” he said.“We are in a corner. Our members are pa-

tient and loyal, but we are running out oftime. We are forced to rent astro fields fromlocal schools,” he said.Gerhard Fourie, chairperson of Subcoun-

cil 7 (Koeberg), says he supports the sportscodes and is worried about the future of de-velopmental training to youngsters fromdisadvantaged areas such as Fisantekraaland Morningstar.“Whowill pay for them to use the facilities

now? Development will definitely sufferfrom this,” he said. According to Fourie herequested a meeting with the sport and rec-reation department in June already, but iswaiting on a date.“It is frustrating that nobody knows how

Learn2Live is ’n bedieningsorganisasievan die kerk en fokus op die ontwikkelingvan arm gemeenskappe deur middel van ba-siese opleiding en ekonomiese bemagtiging.

Altesame 70 mense van kleingroepe is inspanne verdeel om die vyf crèches op teknap.

Die crèches is uitgeverf, herstelwerk is ge-doen, speelgoed is uitsorteer, skoon gemaaken die crèches is verfraai.

Die vyf crèches is Faith, Siphamandla, Za-makuhle, Ebenezer en Anathemba.

Volgens Melanie Labuschagne van Le-arn2Live is die crèches almal werklik be-hoeftig.

Daar veral ’n groot behoefte aan speel-goed, komberse, matrasse, skoonmaakmid-dels en toerusting, het sy gesê.

Een span het die crèches ontsmet en be-spuit met toerusting wat deur die Cape Gar-den Centre voorsien is.

Twee spanne het by Learn2Live se oplei-dingsentrum in Wallacedene speelgoed uit-sorteer en houtplankies met hakies gemaakwaaraan die kinders hul sakke kan ophang.

Die projek is moontlik gemaak met geldwat die kerk se kleingroepe in Junie met ver-skeie projekte hiervoor ingesamel het.

Alle verf, dekor en ander gereedskap ishiermee aangekoop. Elke crèche het ook ’nskoonmaakstel ontvang.

Die gemeentelede het hope kombersies ge-skenk, wat dan tussen die crèches verdeel is.

Some 14 children supported by the AmyBiehl Foundation picked up tennis racketsfor the first time at Milnerton Tennis Clublast week.The children were driven to the club to

The Durbanville Fire Department came tovisit the Kids Can Pre-primary School inKenridge.

“What fun we all had when a big, red fireengine pulled up into the Kids Can car parkand out jumped four firemen and one firelady,” said Lynda Lorimer, a Pre-grade Rteacher of the school.

“Oneof the firemengave an excellent talkon the fire outfit, the helmet and the emer-gency number to call.

“He also taught the children to stop, drop

and roll if their clothes catch on fire.“The children then went outside to see

the fire engine and all the goodies that youcan find on it. Then with great excitementthe children were allowed to hold the hoseand squirt water onto the passing cars inthe road,” Lorimer continued.

“While this excitement was going on ourschool building was full of smoke…

“The fireman taught the children thatthey have to crawl low on the ground to feeltheir way out of the building,” she said.

Snap Education, a special needs school inDurbanville, held a fashion show and la-dies’ tea on Saturday 29 July at Curro Pri-vate School in Durbanville.

The Snap children and their siblings par-ticipated in a fashion show with clothingsponsored by Jelly Planet.

The radio personality and TV presenter,Liezel van der Westhuizen, was the masterof ceremonies at the event.

The aim of the fashion show was to show-case the confidence of the children at Snap

and give them the opportunity to performon stage.

Funds were raised to support the teach-ers and tutors at Snap. Snap is also current-ly running an online campaign where mem-bers of the public can sponsor a child, tutoror teacher by pledging any amount via theironline donation facility.

Fairmont girls hit right notes for goldThe girls’ choir of Fairmont High School inDurbanville were judged the winners of thecategory for less experienced, non-mothertongue girls’ choirs in the ATKV Applous!choir competition.

The choir was also awarded the prize forthe best performance of prescribed musicby a high school, and achieved an overalltotal of 86,25 %.

Vier Kraaifonteinse ma’s het verlede weekhul siele blootgelê toe hulle die traumaopen-baar het wat hul dwelmverslaafde kindersin hul lewe gebring het.Dié geleentheid is Dinsdag in die Kraai-

fontein-stadsaal aangebied deur die Kraai-fontein-polisie en Abba-netwerk, ’n plaasli-ke organisasie wat dwelmverslaafdes in dieKraaifontein-, Brackenfell- en Durbanville-areas bystaan.Felicity Dirks, ’nma vanWallacedene, het

vertel hoe sy slegs twee weke gelede probeerhet om haar oudste dogter te vermoor deurslaappille in haar koffie te gooi.“Dwelms het ’n monster van my kind ge-

maak. Ek kon niemeer nie. Sy hetmy huwe-lik opgemors en dwelms aan haar twee jon-gers susters aangebied. Alles in die huis isal gesteel en ek het nie eers meer genoegkomberse om ons warm te hou nie. Ek wouhaar doodmaak en sou eerder tronk toe gaanvoordat ek toegekyk het hoe dwelms mykind vernietig,” het sy in trane aan die ge-hoor vertel.

Dié 26-jarige dogter is intussen opgeneemin ’n rehabilitasiesentrum.Renette Mauply het vertel van die drie

jaar wat haar seun ’n verslaafde was.“Die eerste jaar was hel en ek het baie,

baie gehuil. Dismoeilik omdie trauma te be-

skryf wat dwelmverslawing in ’n huishou-ding bring,” het sy gesê en ’n pleidooi gerigtot rehabilitasie-instansies om ouers te res-pekteer wat deur die proses saam met hulkinders gaan.Ook dié seun is opgeneem en leef reeds

drie jaar sonder dwelms.Die vroue is onderskraag en getroos deur

Ellen Pakkies, wat in 2007 haar tik-verslaaf-de seun in Lavender Hill verwurg het.“Ekmoet nog elke dagmet die pyn saamle-

we, maar ’n mens moet leer om dit te ver-werk,” het sy gesê.Volgens Pakkies moet die regering stand-

punt inneem in die oorlog teen dwelms, watbesig is om gemeenskappe stelselmatig tevernietig.Brig. Gerda vanNiekerk, stasiebevelvoer-

With a voice filled with soul and lyr-ics that elicit a rollercoaster of emo-tions, singer/songwriter, Li-Ann

Cummins, or Ann Jangle, as she’s knownon stage, is one of Cape Town’s folk bluesgems.The songstress paid her dues singing

back-up for SouthAfricanblues legend, PietBotha and performing with Akkedis fromtime to time, before starting her ownproject.“That’s kindawhere the journey started,”

Ann says. In 2011, she started playing withbassist, Nozomé Brink.At first Ann and Nozomé would just get

together to play two-piece, and before toolong they were joined by guitarist, GerhardCoetzee and drummer, Matthew Raven,Ann explains.

Music styleAnn says it’s tricky to describe the

group’s sound. “We touch on somanydiffer-ent styles,” she says.“We’ve got an old, 40s-invoking, hip-shak-

ing, bit of a rockabilly twist, type of style,and then we also do a lot of more dramatic,more folksy, hectic vocals,” she says, add-ing: “It’s very hard to explain.”Ann Jangle has recorded a song for the

Blues Breakers album, a project by VH Mu-sic and Publishing, which sees some ofSouth Africa’s biggest blues artists payingtribute to the history of blues.“It’s a huge privilege to play on the same

album as Albert Frost and Black Cat Bonesand Piet Botha,” Ann says.“These are the guys I used to just stand

at the bottom of the stage and drool over,you know what I mean,” she says.The album is set to be launched in Cape

Town in September, after it’s official launchat the Fellowship of Rock and Roll festival

in Mozambique.Ann Jangle is also busy working on a sec-

ond album and plans to shoot the groupsmusic video soon.Their debut album,Acoustic Archive, was

released in 2012 and was the CD that soldthe most copies at Table Mountain BluesSummit 2012. They are hoping to release thenew album by the end of this year.

eo for the single, “Moral Code”. Ann ex-plains that the song tells the story of a wom-an accused of cheating by her lover, whenhe in fact has a guilty conscience. She saysthe message of the song is that “all of us areactually the same”.“Everyone makes mistakes, we all do the

wrong thing sometimes,” Ann says. Themusic video will be about a scorned womanwho gets her revenge. “It’s going to be in anold-school setting with a desert cowboyscene,” Ann elaborates.“At the moment it’s pretty much writing

The legendary English rock/pop act,Mike and theMechanics, are gearingup to hit South African shores and

are set to perform live in Cape Town forthe first time.Band leader and founder of the group,

Mike Rutherford, is no stranger to CapeTown and says he regularly visits the city.Rutherford says he is particularly fond

of the Cape’s “outdoorsy” atmosphere andloves the wide open spaces and even ownsa home in Cape Town.In fact, while visiting here last year, he

even completedhis firstArgusCycleTour.

Living YearsAlso while in Cape Town last year, Ru-

therford re-recorded the band’s No 1 sin-gle, “The Living Years”, a song he says heis most proud of.The songwas recorded for the 25th anni-

versary version of The Living Years andfeatures Cape Town ensemble, Isango.Rutherford explains that he was intro-

duced to the group by a friend and pointsout that while they are relatively un-known in South Africa, they have per-formed often in Europe.Mike and the Mechanics had been rela-

tively quiet over past years until Ruther-ford, who initially started the band as aside project while in Genesis, decided tobreathe new life into it.Rutherford explains that he has always

enjoyed songwriting and wasn’t ready togive up and Mike and the Mechanics wasa good vehicle to be writing for.Having lost vocalist Paul Young in 2000

and having other vocalists in between,Mike and theMechanics released a newal-

bum, The Road, in 2011 with AndrewRoachford and TimHowar singing vocals,Luke Juby on keyboards, Gary Wallis ondrums, and Anthony Drennan on guitarand bass.Rutherford says there are plans for the

release of a ‘best of’ anniversary album.

Mike and the Mechanics played in SouthAfrica (in 1993), Rutherford sayshe is look-ing forward to performing in the city.He says fans can expect to hear all the

old Mike and the Mechanics favourites,along with one or two new songs and evena few Genesis classics.As part of the concert, the band will be

supporting the M-Net Naledi Children’sLiteracy Project. A portion of ticket saleswill be donated to the project and audience

members are being asked to bring alongbooks to donate, which will be distributedto school libraries.
