Despite a desperate outcry by re-sidents, the City of Cape Town re-cently decided that they will notbe erecting a permanent speedcamera on Okavango Road, bet-ween the N1 and Frans ConradieDrive.

This, despite the admission by sa-fety and security portfolio commit-tee chairperson, Councillor CarinBrynard that this road is used as

The People Living With Cancer (PLWC) Can-cer Buddies organisation has been ear-marked as one of the beneficiaries in thespectacular Want ons Kan/Cause we Can!concert.

PLWC Cancer Buddies was established in2000 by Linda Greeff and Carl Liebenberg, both of whom are cancer survivors.

Theorganisationdevelopsvolunteer coun-selling guidelines and support that helpspeople who have been diagnosed with can-cer.

After a person has been diagnosed withcancer, that is when he or she needs all thesupport they can get, says Greef.

The aim is to provide support to newly di-agnosed cancer patients when treatmentstarts, to assist with the initial adjustmentto the process. This service ensures that acancer patient and their caregivers have ac-cess to support services near their treatmentunits. We need them to be cancer survivorsand not cancer victims.

The organisation offers a buddy supportnetwork where cancer patients can interactwith and receive advice and support fromcancer survivors who have a similar profile, disease and treatment protocol.

She says the importance of support while

learning to live with cancer is fundamentalto developing a true cancer survivor ap-proach.

Dealing with each chapter of survival in-volves more than medical management itrequires attention to your psychological, so-cial, emotional, spiritual, working and prac-tical needs as well.

Developing a patient active approachwhich empowers the patient to take somecontrol over the process and which encour-ages them to see healing as more that justphysical, is an important outcome the cancerbuddies tries to achieve.

Greef says talking with someone who hassurvived cancer and has regained their lifeoffers hope and a sense of empowerment.

Through empowerment comes a positiveattitude, which has a profound effect on theoutcome of the treatment.

PLWC has branches in the Western Cape,Eastern Cape, Gauteng and in Mpumalanga.

Currently they are trying to set up supportgroups in all the smaller communities suchas Delft and Bishop Lavis.

Greef says funding is a challenge. We are in need of funding and thats why

we are so grateful to be a beneficiary of theCause we Can! concert.

Anyone who would like to assist or join theorganisation can call 021 949 4060.

. From page 1.In his communiqu to Van Jaarsveld he

stated that the city would however continuewith its mobile speed enforcement operati-ons on the road

But will this be possible in the face of theacute current shortage of traffic personnel?

This issue was addressed in an article in Ty-gerBurger on 7 March under the headline,Verkeersluit-tekort n groot krisis.

Youalreadyhave limited enforcement ca-pabilities, how can you commit to providingadequate monitoring or enforcement now? Itis just not understandable how you want to

commit people to the problem, which stilldont provide after hours enforcement, vsthe implementation of a much more effectivedeterrent and control measure that even ge-nerates revenue? He also requested an ex-planation as to why the criteria were notconformed to.. In a media enquiry to the city,TygerBur-

ger posed several questions to the city withregard to this issue, but had received no feed-back at the time of going to press.

Somebody should do something about it(someone)How hard could it be?Somebody should do something about it(someone)Maybe that someone is me

Jy is daardie iemand wat moet regmaak. In jou gesin, in jou woonbuurt, by die werk.

nie finansieel sterkgenoeg is omte help nie.

Haar kamer-deur was gesluit.

The South African Social Security Agen-cy (Sassa) seems to be blaming pensio-ners, parents and caregivers for the re-cent mayhem in the pay-out of socialgrants.

Both the minister of social developmentBathabile Dlamini and Sassa CEO VirginiaPetersen have repeatedly given assurancesthat the re-registration of beneficiaries ne-cessitated by the changeover to the CashPaymaster System would not disrupt grantpayments.

Sassa now admits that several systemglitches delayed the payment of grants sin-ce 2 April. In a full-page advertisement in theBusiness Report on Sunday, Sassa blamesthese glitches on beneficiaries who pa-nicked and put pressure on the system.

    This blame-shifting is unacceptable,

said Mike Waters, the DAs shadow ministerof social development in a statement lastweek.

The grants system is a national compe-tency managed by Sassa, which falls underthe department of social development. Sassaand the department therefore have joint res-ponsibility to ensure that grants are paid outtimeously during the re-registration pro-cess.

According to him the advertisementswould have cost Sassa at least R213 000 orthe equivalent of 177 old age grants or 803child support grants.

We have previously asked the chairper-son of the portfolio committee on social de-velopment to call both minister Dlamini andMs Petersen to appear before the committeeto give feedback on the management of there-registration process ... he said.

Its what her mom would have wanted.Thats why a businesswoman from Brac-kenfell is organising a fundraiser for athree-month-old girl who is in dire needof a hearing aid.

Jo-Ann Clayton and staff of the ButterfliesUnisex Hair Salon will be cutting and blow-drying hair on Sunday (15 April) to raisefunds for Chloe Beyers who suffers frommulti-moderate high frequency loss of hea-ring.

The idea came about after Claytons mom,Hester Verster (66), passed away on Tuesday13 March and in rememberance of her, shewanted to do something special.

My mom became deaf at the age of 19 andhad a cochlear implant. When I heard ofChloe, I thought I could help.

The aim of the fundraiser is to have a cutand blow at a price of R100 and the money

will go towards getting Chloes hearing aid.It is for a good cause and my mother

would be proud. I spoke to Chloes mom andshe said it would be great if I do this. All ofthe staff at the salon were excited when Imentioned the project to them and they weremore than happy to be a part of it.

Charlene Beyers, Chloes mother saysthey are thankful to Clayton for taking thisinitiative. I am very grateful that there arestill people willing to help others. When shetold me what she wanted to do I was estatic. My eldest daughter aged six also has a hea-ring problem and when I heard my youngestalso had it, it was tough. Medical aid doesntcover this operation and thats why I was sohappy when Jo-Ann contacted me and toldme what she wanted to do. It means a lot tome and my family.

The Butterflies Unisex Hair salon is situa-ted in the Glengarry Shopping Complex andwill be open from 09:00. Call them on021 982 8134.

En my God sal in elke behoefte van julleryklik voorsien volgens Sy wonderbaarlikerykdom in Christus Jesus. Filippense 4:19

When would allarrive alive? At last count, almost 200 people had beenkilled on South African roads over theEaster weekend, 13 of them in the WesternCape.

Although this figure is down comparedto 2011, this in no way minimises the im-pact from loss of lives.

Easter is a time of worship for Christi-ans celebrating the resurrection of Jesus,it is a joyous time to spend with family andfriends; not intended for mourning.

On 3 April, Western Cape minister oftransport and public works Robin Carlisleexpressed his hope for no fatalities in theprovince on the roads at Easter. This wasnot to be.

While the authorities have done every-thing in their power from Operation Exo-dus to the Arrive Alive Road Safety Cam-paign to keep South Africans safe on theroads, the same cannot be said of the moto-rists.

The primary and ultimate responsibili-ty rests with the person entrusted behindthe wheel. Every driver is well aware ofthe murderous implications of drivingdrunk, speeding and driving unroadwort-hy vehicles, yet many, in the foolhardy be-lief that it will never happen to me, risktheir lives, that of their passengers and in-nocent fellow motorists.

Next Easter, can we turn Carlisles hopeof zero road fatalities into a reality?

Renters also want to recycleIm reading the letters in todays (Wednes-day 4 April) newspaper about the recyclebins. The letter of Debbie Knipe from Dur-banville (Go fetch your recycle bin urgent-ly) sayswe shouldbe fined fornot recycling.I find that a bit unfair.

I am renting a property in Protea Heights,Brackenfell.

I dont have a recycle bin. Not because Ihave a no care attitude or want to protectour environment! I dont have one becausethe municipality wont issue me with a bin.

You see, last year I went to go ask wherecan I get a recycle bin. I was told that the OW-NER will have to go fetch the bin with a letterthat he/she will receive from the municipali-

ty. How true this is, I would like to know? Some renters dont even get to see the mu-

nicipality account in some cases. In my case, the owners arent even in the

country. Now my question is ... In the case of ren-

ters, who is responsible for fetching the bin?The owner or myself, the renter?

And if we can go collect the bin ourselves, what would we need? Our rental agreement?Do they even collect recycling materials inBrackenfell? And when?

Some clarity on this issue would be appre-ciated.

Dit gaanreeds jare lank so aan.

Boonop word my erf as ontlas-tingsplek gebruik.

So is daar baie ander voorbeelde.

The new Peugeot 508GT hasarrived on dealership floors, adding to Peugeots extendedrange of passenger and com-mercial vehicles now availa-ble in South Africa.

Graceful in style and appear-ance the new 508GT is equippedwith a 2.2 HDi 4 cylinder dieselengine which came as some-thing of a surprise for the testteam.

However, the combination ofa 150kW engine revving at3 500rpm coupled to a 6-speedautomatic transmission cer-tainly provides exhilaratingperformance and outstandingfuel economy; a combined fig-ure of 5,7 litres/100km beingachieved from the 72 litre fueltank.

Whats more, the new Peugeot508GT seems to perform effort-lessly, the engine being smoothand subtle on acceleration withthe automatic 6-speed changingover without any noticeablelapse or jerkiness, thus allowingthe driver to sit back and enjoythe drive with minimal fuss.

As with previous Peugeots, roadholding is of a high calibreand corrugated surfaces are tak-en in the 508GTs stride; if there

is a problem it is that the turn-ing circle is a bit on the wideside when it comes to negotiat-ing the likes of car parks.
