A man was critically injured on Saturdaynight after refusing to hand over his keys tosecurity personnel and speeding off instead.The man was driving with his lights on-

and-off, said Mark Horstman of Basset secu-rity.Two of their officers saw the man while

he was driving down Durban Road andcaught up with him at a nearby garage fur-ther along the road.

Horstman said the shift commander onduty asked the driver to wait for the police“as he was endangering the lives of otherson the road by driving under the influence”.The security officer thenattempted to take

the driver’s car keys, but “the driver hit hishand away and sped off down Durban Roadtowards Bellville”. The security officers no-tified the Bellville police as to where the carwas heading, Horstman said.CaptainFienieNimb, spokeswomanof the

Bellville police, confirmed that when theirofficers arrived, they found the blue Peugeot

on its roof opposite a business premises,with the driver lying outside the car.“Themanwas critically injured and taken

to hospital immediately by emergency serv-ices,” she said.Hewill be chargedwith reckless andnegli-

gent driving.

‘Drunk’ man critically injured in Durban Road

A car landed on its roof on Saturday after thedriver, allegedly inebriated, refusing to give hiskeys to security personnel and sped off.

Two people in a black BMW without num-ber plates or lights stopped at a garage onCarl Cronje Road in the early hours of lastFriday morning.Unbeknownst to them, Ben Wiese, a res-

ponse officer at District Basset security,had seen the “suspicious looking” car andfollowed them.“Wiese could see two occupants inside

the vehicle,” saidMark Horstman, a Bassetspokesperson.According toWiese the car was swerving

between the road lines. “Wiese suspectedthe driver to be driving under the influenceof alcohol and he immediately radioed our(control centre) to contact the police,”Horstman said.Two Bellville police officers arrived at

around 04:25.In themeantime the blackBMWhad stop-

ped at the Engen garage on Carl Cronje andthe officers investigated.“They found that the driver was definite-

ly intoxicated, the vehicle was not registe-red and the licence disk had expired in2013,” Horstman said.Wiese noticed holes in the car “that loo-

ked like bullet holes coveredwith body put-ty”. It appeared to him as if that part of thecar had been re-sprayed.“Wiese pointed it out to the police officers

as the vehicle could have been used in eit-her a cash-in-transit heist or an armed rob-bery,” Horstman said.Captain Fienie Nimb, spokesperson for

the Bellville police, confirmed the incident.“Two officers on duty attended the call

and brought in the driver. He was arrestedfor drunken driving,” she said.Nimb could not, however, confirm whe-

ther the holes were indeed bullet holes, orwhether the car was positively linked withprevious criminal offences.

Asof dit nie genoeg is dat sy die wyn ge-maak het om die Absa Cape Epic te ge-denk nie, wat vanjaar

ook op die Meerendal-wyn-landgoed eindig, gaan sysommer self ook dié moor-dende bergfietstog aandurf.

Moet Liza Goodwin, be-kroonde wynmaker vanMeerendal-wyne, egter nieonderskat nie. Al het sy soonlangs as net ’n jaar geledenog nie eens fiets gery nie,pak sy haar voorbereidingmet fyn beplanning aan.

Meerendal het dié EpicEndurance-wyn onlangs be-kendgestel om die eersteproloog van die Absa CapeEpic, wat in 2012 op Meeren-dal aangebied is, te gedenk.Slegs 600 bottels is van diéMerlot-wyn gemaak.

Terwyl dié wyn reeds in die Franse eike-houtvate in die kelder lê en verouder het, hetLiza, wat met haar gesin op Meerendal bly,in Januarie vanjaar op haar nuwe fiets ge-klim en “sommer op die plaas” begin fietsry.

“’n Mens het nie altyd tyd vir ’n sportklubof gimnasium nie. Ons het mos die trailshierop die plaas,” verduidelik sy. Die plaas hetdrie roetes oor 4 km vir beginners, 13 km-in-termediêre roete en 17 km vir meer ervare

ryers.Later het langer roetes ge-

volg – onder meer 40- tot80 km-roetes om stamina opte bou, vertel sy.

In die middae ná werkdoen sy steeds die roetes opdie plaas.

Liza kry ook twee keerper week Cadence Cycling-afrigting by ’n sentrum inTygervallei, waar ’n hart-monitor aan haar gekoppelword.

“Dit leer my nie net hoeom teen bulte en afdraendeste trap en die pedaal te be-heer nie, maar versterk ookjou core muscles,” sê sy.

Dít doen sy twee ure perweek reeds vir die afgelope vier maande.

“Dis ongelooflik intens.”Liza was op skool sportief en het vir die

Hoërskool Bellville aan atletiek en hokkiedeelgeneem.

Sy het ook WP-kleure in jukskei behaal,

maar haar gunstelingsport was beslis hok-kie, waarvoor sy ook aan die WP-proewedeelgeneem het.

Na skool het sy wingerd- en wynkunde aanElsenburg studeer en het sy nie meer aanformele sport deelgeneem nie.

Dié ma van drie se kinders, Bartho (7), Sa-di (11) en Emily (13), kan nie anders as trotswees op hul fikse ma nie en trap gereeldsaam op die plaas.

Liza se man, Jaco, het reeds drie jaar gele-de begin fietsry en hulle het reeds saam aantalle bergfietswedrenne vanjaar deelgeneem– onder meer die Philadelphia MTB-pret-trap oor 40 km en die uitdagende One Ton-ner-fietswedren oor 163 km.

As wynmaker gaan parstyd in Februarie– kort voor die Epic in Maart – al haar aan-dag verg, maar Liza het reeds ’n plan. Sy be-oog om vroegoggend vir twee ure te gaan oe-fen en oor naweke langer ente te ry, metMaandae as haar rusdag.

En op die spyskaart in haar kossakkie virdie Epic, beplan sy amandels, dadels en pie-sangs...

Consider any of the roadswhich intersect with DurbanRoad. These roads have onelane in each direction. DurbanRoad has two lanes in eachdirection.

If you wish to turn left ontoDurban Road, you are requiredto turn into the left lane; thesame for the right lane

There are solid barrier linesbetween the two lanes and it isillegal to enter the right lanefrom the left – and vice-versa –as it would entail crossing thesolid barrier line.

It is dangerous to cut into theright lane from the left side.Despite this, just about everytime I drive there some left-turning idiot tries to shove meinto the centre island when Iturn right onto Durban Road.

Exam season is upon us and soon hun-dreds of thousands of learners acrossthe country will be pulling caffeine-

fuelled all-nighters in an attempt to cram ayear’sworth of information into their heads.

But a pharmaceutical company warns ofcaffeine-induced anaphylaxis or allergy.

Mariska vanAswegen, spokesperson of anallergy medicine provider, says too muchcaffeine can lead to caffeine-induced anaph-ylaxis or caffeine allergy toxicity, especiallyin sensitive individuals.

Van Aswegen says a caffeine allergy canbe deceptive. The allergic person may expe-rience sneezing, difficulty breathing, hives,an itchy or swollenmouth and tongue, heartpalpitations, dizziness or eczema, but thesephysical cues are often accompanied by psy-chiatric responses. Depending on howmuchcaffeine is consumed, symptoms of caffeineallergy – also termed by some as a cerebralallergy – can range from mild to severewhich include lack of concentration andcomprehension, aggression, hyperactivityand disorganised thought processes.

She says a caffeine allergy is difficult todetect and can take several hours for symp-toms to become apparent.

Doctors also rarely diagnose caffeine al-lergy because few know of it and aren’t like-ly to ask about your caffeine consumption.

Energy drinks and cola also contain largedoses of caffeine.

Symptoms may vary depending on howstrong a person’s allergy to caffeine is.

“How you react to caffeine depends onhowmuch caffeine you are used to drinking.People who aren’t used to consuming lots ofcaffeine regularly can be much more sensi-

tive or allergic to its negative effects. Theconverse may also be true. According tomedical literature, the longer a person is ex-posed to an allergen, the greater the chancesof developing an allergy to the substance.”

Her advice to pupils studying for year-endexams is to:

. Ditch the caffeine for H²O. Water givesthe brain the electrical charge it needs forall brain functions including thought andmemory processes.

. Eat a well-balanced diet of fruit and veg-etables at least a week prior to and duringexam time.

. Take a five-minute break every hour toallow your body to produce more glucose –the fuel youneed for studying. Rather opt forsnacks such as almonds, blueberries, avoca-dos, fatty fish and yoghurt.

. Get enough sleep and avoid the all-nighters. Studies show that all-nighters im-pair reasoning and memory for up to fourdays. Review the toughest material right be-fore going to bed the night before the testwhich makes it easier to recall the informa-tion later.

. Andavoid distractions such as listeningto music, SMSing or tweeting while study-ing as this will limit your ability to retaininformation.

“By drinking three caffeinated energydrinks a day, students could be ingestingmore than 500mg of caffeine or 1.5 times theamount of caffeine that is regarded as safefor adult consumption.

Two to three cups of coffee (300mg of caf-feine) a day is considered safe and teenagersshould limit themselves to no more than100mg of caffeine a day.”

Coffee and allnightstudy not the answer

With matric exams underway, the next ma-jor step formanypupilswill be leavinghometo attend tertiary institutions – and findingsomewhere to live while they study.

Andrew Schaefer, managing director of aleadingnational propertymanagement com-pany, says SA tertiary institutions are “woe-fully short” of accommodation.”

“Tens of thousands of students are forcedto look beyond purpose-built students unitsevery year, and rent flats or rooms from pri-

vate landlords. Unfortunately, there are noset standards for this type of accommoda-tion, so students and parents need to havetheir own checklist of things to considerwhen making their choice.”

Schaefer says this checklist should in-clude:Distance from campus and access to relia-

ble public transportHousing far from campus may be cheaper

but unless students have access to a regular

shuttle service or affordable, reliable publictransport, they can spendmore on transportthan they save on rent.SecurityThe areamust be safe, clean and relatively

quiet so studens can sleep and study com-fortably.Building managementStrong property management ehanced by

the presence of an experienced on-site care-taker or “house mother” is best.

Single or shared rooms?Whatever students choose, they should

make sure there is a quiet place to study.What furniture is provided?Ideally, student rooms should be fur-

nished, with a working stove and fridge. In-ternet connection is essential these days.Boarding or self-cateringMany parents prefer communes and stu-

dent apartment blocks where the rent in-cludes at least one good meal a day.

last week to receive her prize as winnerof the school category of the 2014 EskomEnergy Efficient Lighting Design Compe-tition.Megan Laughton from Brackenfell

scooped the honours with her “ShreddedPaper” lamp, made from shredded tele-phone directory paper.The final judging of participants took

place at Radiant Lighting in Johannes-burg on 28 October, where semi-finalistspresented their lamps to the judges.Megan describes her winning lamp:

“The windows are covered with randomlywoven shredded telephone directory pa-per. The black writing on the white pagecreates a strong contrast, symbolising thesegregation during Apartheid. The tele-phone numbers on the paper are symbolicof the connections people havemanaged toform in the democratic South Africa.“The telephone directory paper was

shredded and put back together using amessy weaving technique. This resembleshow society was cut and divided duringApartheid, but have since joined togetherand united creating a beautiful society.“The crossing and overlapping shreds of

paper, as well as the strong steel frame,creates a sense of stability within the de-sign which resembles the new found sta-bility in our democracy.“The design is environmentally sustain-

able as it re-uses old materials, and reduc-es waste,” she said. Her lamp retails forR580.Megan will study a three-year interior

design diploma at BHC (BostonHouse Col-

lege) next year, said her proud mother,Sonya Laughton.Megan won a R10 000 cash prize, as well

the competition was todemonstrate that effi-cient lighting technolo-gies, such as fluores-cent technology andLEDs can be used in ul-

tramodern and attractive luminaires forresidential lighting.It was also intended to encourage the de-

roes, will be taking part in the Coro-nation Double Century on Saturday22 November, Chrisna said.

The event is a 202 kilometre roadcycling race from Swellendamthrough Suurbraak, Ashton, Mon-tagu, Robertson and then backthroughBonnievale to Swellendam.“This distancemust be covered in

a maximum of 10 hours, but we aimto complete it in nine.“We are an all-female team and

cycle for the charity SUBZ Washa-ble Pads andPanties,” Chrisna said.SUBZ is a registered NPO – their

slogan is “To give girls back theirdignity”.SUBZ distribute sanitary packets

to these girls each consisting ofthree panties and nine washablepads.

One packet cost R200 and can lasta girl up to five years, Chrisna ad-ded.She said they wanted to ensure

teenage girls did not have to missschool due to a healthy biologicalfunction.She said the group,mostlywomen

People came from far and wide to see theamazing production Roarr, which was pro-duced with endless energy and enormousenthusiasm by Durbanville PreparatorySchool over the past two weeks.The production was directed by Lesley

Greenwood and Elmarie Hendrikse. They

have been working on the school’s producti-ons for the past 15 years and this is definitelyone of thehighlights of the school’s producti-on history.Roarr is based on the story of theLion King, but many new songs have beenadded to enhance the story. The lights andchoreography were done by the staff.

A disabled boy (5) from Kraaifonteinin need of a wheelchair was beam-ing with pride when he blew the

whistle for a charity run to start.The charity run was presented by the

Kenridge Primary School on Friday toraise funds to buy awheelchair – or evena motorised wheelchair if there areenough funds – for Tiaan Louw.

Tiaan suffers from cerebral palsy andis a quadriplegic after a birth injury.

His mother. Leigh-Ann (39), is a singlemom who works in people’s houses andgardens for an income.

On 15 December, Tiaan will turn sixyears old – after he was born a breachbaby with his umbilical cord around hisneck and he was born a month prema-turely. According to Leigh-Ann, she wasnever asked to go for a scan at the clinicor hospital, where he was born. “It wasall very traumatic”, she said.

Tiaan, who is in Grade R at the PaarlSchool in Brackenfell, desperately needsa wheelchair, as he still sits in a strollerat home.

“He has to drag himself or roll wherehe wants to be,” said Leigh-Ann. She alsocompleted eight laps of the charity runcourse.

“He is such a lovely, friendly boy. Iwish I could afford a better education andmore therapy for him. My legs are soreafter all the running, but I did it for mychild,” she said.

The school hopes to raise about R80 000with the event. Last year about R70 000was raised with this annual charity runfor other beneficiaries, and the year be-fore about R100 000 was raised, said Jen-

ny Fisher, a teacher of Kenridge PrimarySchool and organiser of the event.

Horse riders and witches have very little incommon.The former rides a majestic animal and

the latter flies around on a broom in themoonlight.But on Sunday, the conflicting worlds of

riders and witches, ghosts and ghouls cametogether at Fat Pony Backpackers and Rid-ing Centre in Joostenbergvlakte.The Halloween Jumping Show, which in-

volved riders from different clubs, saw themdressing themselves and their horses up ingruesome fashion.Granted, the horses and the riders looked

slightly more adorable than gruesome, but

you get the picture.The events of the day were aptly named

pumpkin pole on the ground, trick or treat30cm AZ competition, flying broomstick50cm precision and speed, black cat 60cmcompetition, jumping spider 70cm competi-tion, witches brew 80cm clear round andspooktacular 90cm AZ competition.Organiser Lorna Hardie says competition

took a back seat to fun and younger ridersbecame more relaxed while competing.The riders certainly enjoyed themselves,

The guitarist behind Afrikaans rockband, Zinkplaat, has been quietlyworking on a side project that’s been

picking up steam.Basson Laubscher started Basson Laub-

scher & The Violent Free Peace in about2004, while still playing with Zinkplaat, asa way for him to play some of the music heloved outside of the band.“This project started very organically,”

he says. Being a fan of blues himself, TheViolent Free Peace started out as a coverband and a way to have fun.“It kind of grew into something else.”Today the band,madeupofBassonongui-

tar and vocals, Beitel Van Der Merwe onbass and Jan Fyfer on drums, plays whatBasson describes as a good mix betweenblues, rock, folk and country.

Raw and loudAlthough the band released their debut-

EP, Shakedown, earlier this year, Bassonsays their sound is rawer and a lot louderthan what you’ll hear on the album.When they band first started, the line up

was constantly changing. Die Heuwels Fan-tasties’ Fred den Hartog even did a stintwith The Violent Free Peace and it was hewho came up with the band’s name.The band was enjoying a “beer drinking/

rehearsal session”when Fred suggested thename “DieWrede Vrede”, but being an Eng-lish band, they decided to gowith a translat-ed version.

“It worked out well because it’s an abso-lute pun and it works in the context of theband,” Basson says of his three-piece. “Plusyour name gets used big on posters becausethey have to write it all out”.Basson will make his second turn on the

Table Mountain Blues Summit stage whenhe performs with The Violent Free Peace inDecember.“It’s an amazing event and there should

be a lot more every year.” But Basson saysit’s interesting that he’s on the line up as hesometimes tries to steer clear of the “blues”label.He says blues, especially in South Africa,

has a bit of a cliched stigma attached to it.“People usually think of old grey guys sit-

ting in a corner playing the same 12 bar stuff

over and over.”His music is definitely influenced by

blues though. As a child, Basson listened topunk and metal, preferring not to listen towhat his dad was listening to, until he dis-covered his father’s vinyl collection at theage of 14.“He had this vinyl of this crazy dude with

this big hat and pink cowboy boots and a re-ally beaten up guitar. I remember I put iton and from the first track, the virus set in.”The crazy dude was Stevie Ray Vaughn

and Basson was hooked on the raw honestyof the blues.

Undeniable“It’s undeniable, if it’s in you, it’s in you.”Basson says his songs are like his chil-

dren, and he’s not ready to choose the oneshe’ll take on stage for the summit, but hemight just throw in a Led Zeppelin numberduring his set.The Table Mountain Blues Summit runs

Gideon Drotschie is itching to getback in the hexagon after a year’slay-off with a back injury, and

looks forward to defending his heavy-weight title against Norman Wessels onThursday night.

Drotschie, known as the “Jugger-naut”, last fought at EFC 25 in Novem-ber last year when he successfully de-fended his title against Fraser Opie.

According to head coach Rico Hat-tingh of REPS Fitness in Bellville, Nor-man “Chef” Wessels will be the toughestopponent in Drotschie’s short but everso successful professional career thusfar. “This will be our toughest fight yet,no doubt. But having said that, we arevery confident that Gideon will retainhis title. We thoroughly did our homework and we are prepared.

Raring to go“We know Norman’s strong points

and we know where to attack. The im-portant thing for us is to focus on ourown game. Training has been excep-tionally good and Gideon recoverednicely from a niggling back injury. Heis fit and raring to go,” said Hattingh.

Gideon is counting the days to fight

night. “It’s been a while since I foughtin the EFC, and to make my comebackin front of my home crowd at Grand-West definitely counts in my favour. Iam ready for anything that Norman willthrow at me.

“If the fight goes the distance I will bemore than up to the challenge. Thisfight has the potential to be a great one,and hard at that,” said a confident Drot-schie.

Clean recordLuke Michael, who won his first pro-

fessional fight at the end of August atEFC 33 in Durban, is brimming withconfidence. Michael also trains underHattingh.

“It feels good to have that first win asa professional in the bag. I will also faceRegis Muyambo at EFC 35. I am lookingforward to getting in a solid perform-ance in front of our local fans and keep-ing a clean record,” said Michael.

Michael lives and breathes MMA. “Heis one of the most dedicated and hardworking individuals in the sport. He isstill a rookie, but give him a chance, heis going places in the industry. He istough as nails, and his technique isright up there. I am very excited abouthis future,” said Hattingh.

The Table View Football Club women’steams had a splendid year, receivingthree top awards at the recent Tygerbergsenior league awards dinner.

Following an exciting 2014 season, fiercecompetition marked the national finals ofthe Spur High School Mountain Bike Leaguethat was hosted at Bekker School in Maga-liesburg.

A record number of 355 riders represen-ting the cream of high school mountain bikeriders from more than 69 schools acrossSouth Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe whocompeted in the two-day event.

DF Malan, who formed part of the WesternCape team, came third in the interprovincialtournament. The 4.5km track at BekkerSchool proved more challenging than previ-ous seasons, boasting a lot of single trackstretches as well as tricky falls and climbsthat required both stamina and technicalskills from the riders. The lap-race formatof the event saw the various age categoriescomplete a specific number of laps ranging

from two laps for the sub-junior girls to a tes-ting five laps for the junior men.

The team from Menlopark High Schoolwas on top form and secured four podium po-sitions as well as logging a number of top tenpositions to secure both the girls and mixedteam national championship trophies, whileGrey College in Bloemfontein won the boysteam category.

The league was launched in 2009 as a jointinitiative between Spur and Amarider tocreate a fun racing environment for child-ren, and has also facilitated the building ofmountain bike tracks on school propertyand community grounds.

Earlier this year the league cemented itsposition as one of the leading sport develop-ment programmes in the country when itwas shortlisted as a finalist for the 2014 Dis-covery Sport Industry Awards.

Die HS D.F. Malan is die Tygerbergstreek senuwe Cemstone ses-aan-’n-kant-krieket-kampioen nadat hy verlede week in Bellvillein die eindstryd afgereken het met die span-ne van De Kuilen, Edgemead en Fairmont.
