yhet op n dag in die plaaslike

    kruidenierswinkel twee be-

    jaardes gesien wat hul sente

moes omdraai en dit het haar lewe

    verander.

    Johanna Kotze (69), wat onlangs

deur die Merriman Lions met n

    humanitre toekenning vereer is,

    se lewe het onherroeplik verander

n daardie dag, twee jaar gelede, in

    die winkel.

Die twee mense voor my moes

elke keer eers kyk of hulle genoeg

geld het vir die goed wat hulle wou

koop. Elke keer moes hulle iets te-

rugsit. My hart het uitgegaan na

    die twee verwaarloosde, weerlose

    mense.

    Uiteindelik het die goed wat

hulle wou koop net R27 gekos en ek

het aangebied om daarvoor te be-

taal. Die tannie het omgedraai en

vir my ges: Thank you, are you

an angel from God?. Ek moes op

    daardie oomblik daar wees, s

Kotze.

gevat. N drie weke het sy ons uit-

eindelik toegang gegee en ek kon

sien die plek is verwaarloos, ver-

    tel Kotze.

Sy het n beroep op kennisse ge-

doen om hulp. Ek het nie eens ge-

weet hoe werk Facebook nie, maar

ek was aanlyn. Nie lank nie toe

trek daar n bakkie met n groot

    sleepwa voormy deur in. Daarwas

n stoof, mikrogolf, n yskas en alle

soorte huisware. Ons kon die tan-

nie se huis skoonmaak en al die

goed daarin sit. Kort voor lank het

    die Facebook-groep meer as 3 000

lede gehad en skenkings het inge-

stroom, s Kotze. Sy het die orga-

    nisasie Locals Helping Locals ge-

stig en meer as 40 mense vind nou

    baat. Bejaardes wat in Wendy-hui-

se en agterplase in die Edgemead,

    Goodwood, Richwood en Bothasig

    woon, kry elke week kos.

    Volgens Kotze ontvang sy ver-

skillende skenkings wat sy dan vir

    nie-bederfbare produkte verruil.

    Ons ontvang van skilderye tot

potplante, maar ons kan mos nie

potplante vir mense gee nie. Ek

    plaasdandie goedopmyFacebook-

blad en verruil dit vir kos. Ons is

so gesend dat my huis al soos n

pakplek lyk. Dit is omtrent net my

    slaapkamer en badkamer wat pri-

vaat is. n Weldoener het selfs rak-

    ke in my voorkamer aangebring

om goed te stoor, s sy.

So vinnig het die hulp inge-

stroom dat Kotze en die ses mense

wat haar help, uiteindelik van die

    goed by n plakkerskampmoes uit-

deel. Ek het vir die eerste keer in

    my lewe n plakkerskamp besoek,

waar ons onder meer speelgoed en

    sopuitgedeel het. Die gesiggieswat

ek daar gesien het, sal ek nooit ver-

    geet nie.

Kotze s sy het nie die toeken-

ning verwag nie. Ek was heelte-

mal in die duister daaroor. Hier

moet ek nou n toekenning voor

mense ontvang. Vir my het dit ge-

voel asof ek dit glad nie verdien

nie. Ek dank die Here vir di werk

wat ek doen en hoop hy sen my

met goeie gesondheid sodat ek kan

    Contractor woes settled

    ANDR BAKKES

    @andrebakkes

    A

    four-month long dispute between a

    building contractor and his clients

will be resolved after the former

agreed to pay back the deposit.

The clients, Llewellyn and Tena Johnson,

asked a local building contractor to build a

wall with palisade fencing and a pedestrian

    and drive-in gate.

The contractor completed the wall, but

not the palisade fencing or the gates.

A job which the Johnsons expected to be

finished in January, has dragged on to

April, and by the time they contactedTyger-

Burger, it had still not been resolved.

According to the Johnsons, they paid the

    contractor R55 400, of which R15 000 was a

deposit on work still to be done.

Over the weekend the Johnsonswere still

    considering taking legal action.

    OnMonday the contractor toldTygerBur-

ger he has agreed to repay the deposit of

    R15 000 to the Johnsons.

Says Llewellyn: He has made promises

for four months and has not been forthcom-

ing. But if he repays the deposit, we will not

seek legal advice. We feel vindicated and

will be prepared to cut our losses.

According to him the work done to com-

plete the wall was satisfactory, even though

it needs a second coat of paint.

When the contractor was asked why the

jobwas postponedhe said its a long story.

Tena has posted many complaints about

the contractor on Facebook and the Hello

Peter website and when Llewellyn was

asked if they will remove the posts if the

    manpaysup, he saidhewouldhave to speak

    to his wife.

    WhenLlewellynwasaskedwhathewould

do differentlywhen looking for a contractor

he responded: I would contact their refer-

    ences before I hire them.

The contractor is not registered at theNa-

    tional Home Builders Registration Council

(NHBRC), but this is not a prerequisite for

    builders who do renovations.

Agnes van den Berg, branding coordina-

tor of NHBRC, verifies this, but adds that

it remains advisable for these type of build-

    ers to register nonetheless.

The NHBRC released some tips in a press

release when considering hiring a builder:

Check the reputation of the home build-

er, take time to talk to housing consumers

    whohavemadeuse of the builders services

in the past, make sure the builder gives you

a contract that covers the building of your

home, before signing the contract make

sure that you have read it and understand

it, and that the description of the work to

be done and specifications ofmaterials, fin-

ishes and fittings to be provided are in ac-

    cordance with your requirements. Varia-

tions to these during the course of the con-

tract can be very expensive. Consumers

who are in any doubt as to what is being

offered should ask the builder to clarify or

to obtain legal advice. Also, carefully check

the form of contract offered by the builder

    BRENDEN RUITER

    @ruitervaniewind

    T

he City of Cape Towns Planning and

    Building Development Management

    (PBDM)Department raised the issue

of why a building was marked as a place

of worship rather than a school in an ap-

    plication for a rezoning.

TygerBurger reported in its front page

story last week about how the community

of Monte Vista was up in arms over the

proposed erection of a cellphone tower on

the premises of a crche (Trouble over

tower, TB 20 April). The community

fears the tower will endanger the lives of

    the children at the crche.

Local resident and the driving force be-

hind the opposition to the tower, Larry

Bashkier, says the application should be

    withdrawn because of false information

    submitted in the application.

There is a big difference between the

two. It comes down to lying, he says.

Johan van derMerwe, the Citys Mayco

    member for energy, environmental and

spatial planning, says they raised the is-

sue with the applicant after it was adver-

tised. From the applicants feedback, it

appears as though they indicated the in-

correct information, based on what was

allegedly provided by their client, says

    Van der Merwe.

According to him it is not the Citys re-

sponsibility to inform parents about the

    tower. The applicationwas submitted by

a town planning consultant with the nec-

essary Power of Attorney from the regis-

tered property owner. It is therefore con-

sidered the responsibility of the property

or registered owner or operator of the ear-

ly childhood centre to inform the parents

    of the application.

    The application was advertised for

public comment and a large number of ob-

    jections were received from surrounding

property owners, says Van der Merwe.

Asked if there was any scientific proof

that the tower will pose no danger to the

children, he says there is none.

Generally, there is no scientific proof

of the impact that a cellular mast has on

the health of residents living around or in

close proximity to masts. However, the

    health department has electromagnetic

    fields (EMF) exposure limit guidelines,

which guide the levels of emissions from

    cell masts. The applicants installation

can be measured or reports may be re-

quested by the environmental health de-

partment from the applicant, which need

to indicate the emissions fromsuch instal-

    lations, says Van der Merwe.

It is, however, not final that the mast

will be erected. The application was ad-

vertised and the deadline for public com-

ment was 18 April. The department will

process the application and, as per the

    standard procedure for processing devel-

    opment applications, refer the received

    objections and internal departmental

comments to the applicant for comment,

    reiterates Van der Merwe.

Bashkier says hell write to the relevant

    authorities andask that thewhole process

be stopped. We cannot let this go. The

City must do the right thing and stop the

    whole process, says Bashkier.

A man who wishes to remain anony-

mous, says he was chased away from the

    crchewhenhewanted to informparents.

So you are hearing about cat shows con-

stantly, and seeing the pictures of winning

cats in newspapers and on social media, but

have you even wondered how your own

purebred or domestic would have done at

    such a show?

Now you have the opportunity to prove

that the Western Province Cat Club

(WPCC) will be hosting its first Champion-

ship Show of the year on Saturday 28 May

at the Edgemead Community Hall. To enter

the purebred section, your catmust be older

than 16 weeks on the day of the show and

    registeredwith the SouthAfricanCatCoun-

    cil (SACC).

However, the show isnt just for purebred

    and registered cats not-so-pure household

cats may be entered in a special section for

    domestics.

TheWPCC is very fortunate to have a spe-

cial celebrity judge for the domestic pets at

    this show. JanHendrik van derWesthuizen

earlier this yearbecame the first SouthAfri-

can chef in the countrys history to be

awarded the highly prestigious and elusive

Michelin Star. He is the owner of Restau-

rant JAN in Nice, France, and also an au-

    thor, photographer and stylist.

    Scottsville se 1985matrikulante hou renie

    T

he City of Cape Town and the

    WesternProvinceMotorClub

have teamed up for a weekly

event at the Killarney race track,

aimed at curbing illegal street rac-

    ing.

    According to a statement, theRo-

bot Racing event allows car enthu-

siasts to race against each other on

a track instead of the street.

The start of the race is signalled

by a traffic light turning from red

to green, hence the name Robot

Racing, and the first driver cross-

    ing the line wins.

    Basic safety check

All cars undergo a basic safety

    check before being permitted onto

the track to reduce the possibility

    of incidents involving the drivers.

The pilot event was held in De-

    cember, with the weekly events

    kicking off in mid-March.

    The Citys R450 000 contribution

split between the safety and secu-

rity and tourism, events and eco-

    nomic development directorates

    is for a six-month trial.

    Maycomember for safety and se-

curity, JP Smith, says in the past

    they have received feedback that

people resort to illegal street races

because there are too few events at

    Killarney.

So the City has literally put its

money where its mouth is by fund-

ing these events and taking the fre-

    quency from monthly to weekly.

Its taken a while to secure the

funding that I alluded to a year ago,

but the City has come to the party

and I hope that racing enthusiasts

will join us and stay off the

    streets.

    According to the Western Prov-

    ince Motor Club, race participa-

tion is free, but there is a gate fee

of R50. This, together with the

    Citys contribution, covers the cost

    of employing marshals, security

and safety officials as well as en-

    suring the presence of medical

    staff.

A portion of the Citys contribu-

tion will also be used to cover the

    cost of erecting noise abatement

    structures to minimise any dis-

    turbance to local residents.

    These structures have been de-

    signed by andwill be erectedunder

the guidance of the acoustic engi-

    neering consultants contracted to

    the Western Province Motor Club.

A portion will also be utilised to

    promote these events and road

safety in general via the well

    known radio personality Ready D.

    Committed to safety

    Wewelcome this joint initiative

    and the Citys tangible support,

says the executive manager at Kil-

    larney International Raceway, Des

    Easom.

    Killarney is an international

    multi-purpose event venue with

    ever growing popularity among

    racing participants, enthusiasts

and families, and we are commit-

ted to track and road safety for all

    users motorists, motorcyclists,

    cyclists and pedestrians,he says.

At Killarney we offer all the ex-

    citement and competition of street

    racing, but under safe conditions

and as a pleasant event experi-

    ence.

Plan to put a stop to illegal racing

    A new

    weekly

    street

    racing

    event will

    be held at

    Killarney in

    an attempt

    to curb

    illegal

    racing.

ie polisie in Goodwood het mense ge-

waarsku om uit te kyk vir swende-

    laars wat by kitsbanke rondhang.

    Diewaarskuwing komnadat dit vandees-

week op n Facebookblad, wat vir die be-

kamping van misdaad gestig is, gegons het

oor die bejaarde paartjie wat van R1 000 be-

roof is. Volgens n inskrywing op die blad

het die paartjie geld onttrek, waarna hulle

deur drie welgeklede mans genader is.

Die mans het hulle as polisielede voorge-

doen en ges hulle ondersoek n saak van

roof. N hulle die paartjie se bankkaart be-

kom het, het hulle R1 000 onttrek.

    Lt. Wayne Theunis, polisiewoordvoerder

van die polisie in Goodwood, s die saak is

nie by hulle aangemeld nie, maar hy is be-

wus van die slenter. Dis n ou slenter wat

nou weer kop uitsteek. Die boewe sit iets

in die kitsbankwatmaak dat jou bankkaart

vassit. As jy wegbeweeg, bly jou bankkaart

agter en hulle haal dit dan uit. Voor jy jou

o uitvee, is daar geld uit jou rekening

weg, s Theunis.

    iets weg, s Theunis.

    Hy gee die volgende wenke:

.Moet nooit sonder jou kaart wegbe-

    weeg van die kitsbank nie.

. Staan by die bank as die kaart vassit

en bel die nommerwat op diemasjien gegee

word om die kaart te kanselleer.

.Moet nooit jou kaart aan n vreemde-

    ling oorhandig nie.

. As jy by n sentrum is, vra die sentrum-

gehandel. In die een geval is n smokkelaar

    Bothasig police has reminded firearm

owners to check their firearm licenses

and competencies to ensure they are still

    valid.

    According to Warrant Officer Jacques

Naud, the designated firearm officer at

the Bothasig Police Station, the law re-

quires fire arm owners to apply 90 days

before the expiry date of the license and

    competency card.

Naud says his office has identified that

some residents are interpreting the law

incorrectly in terms of the renewal peri-

od. When applying for renewal of the li-

censes, the applicationmust be handed in

90 days before the license expires. In order

    to comply, the necessary documentation

needs to be obtained and handed back to

my office before the 90 day period starts,

    says Naud.

When applying for the renewal of a com-

petency certificate, it is not necessary to

go for training again. Firearm owners on-

ly need to apply for renewal of it and the

firearm license at the local firearm office.

If it has expired, they need to contact their

local firearm office as soon as possible.

V Anyone who needs more information regarding

the application or renewal process can contact

    MninaweDaweti on 021 559 9414 or 021 559 9425.

    theft from a motor vehicle.

On Wednesday 20 April at about 14:00 off

ing area of the Glenwood Shopping Mall.

Pieters decided to observe the suspects.Ac-

cording to her they were looking into a num-

ber of vehicles and took copper and electrical

    wires from a Chana bakkie.

Pieters called for backup and Constable

    Steven Drury immediately responded.

The two suspects, who are known crimi-

    nals inGoodwood,werearrestedwith the sto-

ocial media is clearly a potent tool to

    makeyourvoiceheard and even some-

times getting a reply from those in

    power.

    After last weeks Afrikaans TygerBurger

article entitled Arts was onbeskof the sto-

ry was posted on the newspapers Facebook

page. In turn the post was shared 11 times

    and reached 7 422 people.

    Where many people highlighted their

own strife theyve had with Tygerberg Hos-

pital, others said theyve only had positive

    experiences there.

Says Koos Carstens: Last week I went to

this hospital for the first time and I have no

complaints. On every floor the staff was

    very friendly.

Margie Meyer agrees with Carstens, but

there are others who have experienced sim-

ilar issues than Esther du Toit, the woman

    quoted in the original article.

An incident first reported on Facebook a

couple of weeks ago also came to the atten-

tion of TygerBurger. A man hit out at the

supposed ineptitude of the people in power

to do something about the state of public

hospitals, posting a desperate plea on his

Facebook page during one of his visits.

Oh my goodness, I am speechless. I am

speaking to patients and nowhear there are

patients who had been sitting here formore

than two days ... Noooooo, pleaseeee help.

These people are human beings ...!

His post, as well as the highly critical fol-

    low-upposts, reached authorities andhe got

    several responses from them.

In one of his next posts he wrote: I have

to acknowledge the Western Cape MEC for

    health, Nomafrench Mbombo. She was

alerted about the situation last night and

her office responded immediately. They fol-

lowed up today with me to assure me that

they are paying attention to the issue.

An article elicited the following response

from a reader: My husband was at Tyger-

berg Hospital for three months in which

time I have witnessed that nurses when

called by patients either take their time

or have abrupt answers, like the patient

needs to wait. When the shift changes at

19:00 half the nursing staff are already at the

bus stop, leaving only one or two toman the

    wards ...

The hospital cannot dictate which ave-

nues people should follow when they have

    complaints, but hospital spokespersonLati-

cia Pienaar nonetheless highlights the fol-

lowing possibilities: There is a provincial

SMS line where people can SMS Help to

Good follow-upwork led to the arrest of a sus-

pect for possession of stolen property.

On Thursday 21 April at about 19:40 Con-

stables Justin Mentoor and Steven Drury ex-

ecuted a stop and search operation at the cor-

ners of Voortrekker Road and Alice Street.

This areahas recently beenahotspot for theft

out of motor vehicles and robbery incidents.

They found one suspect carrying a shop-

ping bag with a JVC front loader CD player

and a passport. The officers traced the owner

of the passport who informed them that his

passport and front loader had earlier been

    stolen from his vehicle.

The 31-year-old suspect appeared in the

    Goodwood Magistrates Court.

Aan die voorpunt van die inhegtenis-

lt.kol. Patrick Jacobs. In die eerste voor-

val is n 29-jarige man van Philippi aan-

bedekte operasies uitgevoer toe hulle die

    inhegtenisnemings doen. Ons het eers

net n bietjie dwelms gekry, maar toe ons

sy motor deursoek, is nog dwelms en n

    groot hoeveelheid geld gevind.

n Ruk later, tydens die tweede gedeel-

te van die operasie, is n 42-jarige man

ook weens dwelmhandel in hegtenis ge-

neem. Beide gaan binnekort in die hof

    verskyn.

Volgens Jacobs gaan hulle volhou met

di soort operasies. Ek wil dwelmhan-

gereeld operasies hou en as jy iets onwet-

a man pushing and carrying a lawnmower

and weed eater. The officers followed the

man to Vasco Railway Station where they

    asked him about the property.

The suspect could not give a satisfactory

explanation for the property and took the

policemen on a wild goose chase. After the

officers visited three addresses, they decid-

ed to ask around where they first saw the

suspect. At one of the addresses in Murray

    Street, Goodwood, the owner recognised

    the goods as his property.

When he checked his garage where the

    Two sides to

    every story;

    only one truth

There are always two sides to every

    story.

Theres the side we see, and then

    theres the side we shouldnt.

In a world of capitalism and corpora-

tions, one has to wonder how much of

the information we consume is being

force-fed to us and how much is truly

    objective reporting.

In the US, for example, a number of

    independent broadcasters have been

gaining momentum with the help of the

    internet.

    With no influence

    from advertisers

    (or the presidential

    candidates they

    support), the

    stories they report

    on and how they

    report on them, are

    vastly different

    from mainstream

    broadcasters.

    It was BBC

    executive John

    Reith who first

    outlined the role of

    journalists as to

    educate, inform and entertain. Education

and information are the two most valua-

ble commodities of the modern age, yet,

very often, we are too busy looking for

entertainment to pay attention to these

    elements.

More importantly, as early as 1787,

print journalism is often referred to as

The Fourth Estate, which, in a nut-

shell, refers to a political or social force

    that isnt always officially recognised.

The medias role in changing the world

for the better in the past is undeniable.

    Here, for example, photographers like

Sam Nzima showed the rest of the world

the reality of Apartheid South Africa,

even when the government was blocking

these images from the local press.

A look at the history books shows that

governmental impact on the media is not

    uncommon, often with disastrous effects.

The Nazis ruled their people with the

help of Joseph Goebbels and his propa-

ganda while a string of American presi-

dents tried to control how their citizens

got their news about the Vietnam War.

The only difference between the 1940s,

1970s and now, is the shift of power. As

capitalism started to steadily rise in

popularity and influence after the Second

World War, the business sector slowly

gained more power over the people who

    should have been governing them.

A colleague once pointed out that every

news story should be measured by who

stands to benefit most from it. The news

looks a little different when you start

considering it with this question in mind.

    n Gesaghebbende onafhanklike

    navorsingsentrum, die Centre

    of Development and Enterprise

    (CDE), het in Januarie

    gerapporteer oor The real cost

    of compliance: The impact of

    South African regulatory

    requirements on independent

    schools. Hulle bevind onder

    meer dat die private skoolsek-

    tor hopeloos oorgereguleer is

en veel hor eise aan private

    skole gestel word as aan

staatskole; en dat die koste van

    die rompslomp om n private

    skool te registreer dit feitlik

    onmoontlik maak om klein

    private skole te registreer.

    Hulle bereken byvoorbeeld

dat die werklike koste om n

    private skool te registreer

    tussen R270 000 en R290 000

    beloop, ongeag die grootte van

    die skool. Dit vreet hulpbronne

op wat vir opvoeding bedoel is.

    Maar dit plaas ook registra-

sie buite die bereik van enige

    mikroskooltjie. Dit is n

    skending van sulke skooltjies

    se wetlike en grondwetlike reg

    om te bestaan.

    Dieselfde owerheid wat

    hierdie laste op private onder-

wys plaas, bedryf een van die

    slegste skoolstelsels ter wreld,

    volgens sy eie verslae. Die

    gevolg is honderdduisende

    desperate ouers soos Roelof

Coertzen wie se brief op 13

    April (TB Bellville) verskyn

het. Hulle bel en e-pos my

    daagliks.

Dit moet ons dus nie verbaas

    dat daar letterlik duisende

    onwettige private skooltjies

in al die gemeenskappe in die

land is nie selfs in die

    armstes. In n vorige ondersoek

    het CDE bevind dat hierdie

    skooltjies beter resultate lewer

    as beide staats- en geregistreer-

    de private skole.

    n Mens slaan jou hande

    saam oor die pronkende

    politici en opgeblase ampte-

    naartjies wat probeer jag maak

    op hierdie skooltjies wat slegs

    bestaan omdat dieselfde politici

    en amptenare sulke vrot

    onderwys verskaf. Wat hulle

    Vrot onderwys

    moet skuld kry

    Kobus of Kuils River queried

    the double increase recorded for

    his water usage (Hoekom

    skielik die groot waterlesing,

TB, 20 April). My latest meter

    reading also reflects exactly

    double the amount recorded last

month, amounting to a cost of

    over R900 extra. My December

    and January payments differed

by R1000, so it seems to seesaw

    from month to month regard-

less of efforts to contain costs.

    R427.13 has been charged for

    sewerage. My previous payment

was R137.25. I know that this is

    calculated as a percentage of

the water usage but I am a lone

    pensioner with no domestic

help. My cistern is not leaking.

I have not had diarrhoea nor

am I incontinent but it seems

the toilet is another luxury I

must forego if I am to continue

    living in my own home.

    The meter readings are all

    recorded as being actual

    readings but I question the

    validity of these statements, the

    honesty of the meter readers

and the powers that manage the

City of Cape Town. The crea-

tion of a mega city obviously

    creates a bigger basket for

    greater profit from ill gotten

gains. Kobus and I are surely

    The annual Twitter Blanket

Drive is back bigger than ever.

    This year the campaign has

spread its wings to Australia for

    the first time. Collections have

    already started in Melbourne.

    The Twitter Blanket Drive

started seven years ago and sees

    South Africas Twitter commu-

nity unite to help donate thou-

sands of warm blankets for the

poor just in time for winter.

Proteas Fire & Ice Hotel will

act as the main drop-off zone for

    anyone interested in donating

blankets. They will also host the

final event on Thursday 26 May

    where donors and Capetonians

are invited to join in counting all

    the blankets, while enjoying the

    sounds of some local artists.

    In the northern suburbs, the

    at beteken dit om

    God se kind te

    wees?

Dt is die ondertoon van pas-

    toor Lodewyk Spies van Son-

straal se nuwe boek: Bid s vir

    n wonderwerk.

    Lodewyk het die 40-dag-ge-

    bedsuitdaging in rekordtyd

    geskryf nadat hy n uitdaging

    van Carpe Diem Media ont-

    vang het.

    Toe hy met sy debuutwerk

    begin het, het Lodewyk geweet

    dat hy sy idees doeltreffend

    moes kommunikeer. Mense

is besig; meeste mense is nie

lus om n 700-blad-boek te lees

nie hulle het nie die tyd of

    kopspasie daarvoor nie.

Dis weens di feit dat hy be-

sluit het om die boek s te

skryf dat die leser so twee

blaaie per dag oor n tydperk

    van 40 dae kan lees.

    Ek dink daars genoeg

    voorbeelde uit die Bybel oor

waar 40 dae vandaan kom, s Lodewyk.

    Vroeg in boek

buis. Lodewyk s die boek praatmeer oor

    gebedsinfrastruktuur.

    Een van my gunsteling-onderwerpe

    waaroor ek praat is WhatsApp-gebedsket-

tings hoor God jou oor jy baie is, of hoor

    Hy jou omdat jy glo?

    Uiteindelik moet jy genoeg selfver-

troue h om te s: As ek regtig glo Hys

my pa, dan kan ek op n baie andermanier

    met Hom interaksie h.

    Verhouding

    Lodewyk voel dat godsdiens dikwels

    mense se verhoudingmet God pro-

fessioneel maak en dat daar geen

    ruimte vir vrymoedigheid is nie.

n Mens moet volgens hom dieself-

de verhouding met God h as wat

gewone kinders met hul pas het.

Nog n onderwerp in die boek is

die vraag: Het my gebede ten doel

omGod se arm te draai? Lodewyk

s Christene vra soms vir goedwat

    God waarskynlik klaar vir hulle

gedoen het. Oor jy nie weet hoe

om Hom op Sy woord te vat nie,

sien jy nie die realiteit van daai

goed in jou lewe uitkom nie.

    Wanopvatting

    MetBid s vir n wonderwerkwil

    Lodewyk die wanopvatting dat

wonderwerke soos dobbel is en dat

mense nie konsekwensie in hul le-

wens hoef in te bou nie, weer-

    spreek.

Hy sal bietjie verder oor die boek

uitbrei wanneer hy op Saterdag 30

April n Bid anders, leef anders-

    slypskool by DAria in Durbanvil-

    le aanbied.

Die oggend begin 08:30 vir 09:00

en Lodewyk s hy gaan deur die

loop van die oggend van die boek se kern-

    begrippe bespreek en mense aanmoedig

om deur die uitdaging te werk. Oefen op

    T

    he annual Slave Route Challenge,

which sees runners taking on a route

    that encompasses anarrayof SouthAf-

ricasmost historical sites, has become a fa-

vourite on the calendar of novice and elite

    runners alike.

The race, of which TygerBurger is a me-

dia sponsor, takes place on Mothers Day

    (Sunday 8 May).

Event spokesperson Fatima Allie is ex-

    tremely passionate about this race.

Born in the Bo-Kaap, Allie was raised in

Walmer Estate and went to school in Dis-

trict Six. She is a self-professed defendant

    of the Cape Malays.

When it comes to the Slave Route Chal-

lenge itself, we look at our ancestors who

came from Indonesia, Java and Malaysia.

They were the ones who came with all

the skills; they were the builders. Somy an-

cestors were not slaves per s; my ancestors

were exiled from Indonesia to the Cape,

    says Allie.

She goes on to say that because the slaves

were forced to work and interact with other

labourers brought to the area, that is how

all the cultures started to mix and that as

a result started to weave the fabric which

    meshes South Africas rich history.

If you look around, the oldest standing

building is the Castle of Good Hope. The

Castle of Good Hopewas built by the slaves.

Look at City Hall and the Grand Parade

all of these iconic and old places and struc-

tures in Cape Town were all built by the

    slaves.

Then you realise that there are so many

historical sites throughout Cape Town that

people did not even know of, adds Allie.

Besides the historical aspect the race af-

fords itself to, Allie says there is an amazing

atmosphere of togetherness on race day.

It is the spirit of Ubuntu that you feel.

You will see a grandmother who has never

ever walked (in an event) in her entire life.

She is nowwalking the 5kmwith her grand-

children because her daughter and her hus-

band are going to be running the 10km

while their teenager is running the 21km,

so this is a family event.

It is about people coming together from

all walks of life, all religious denomina-

tions, fromCape Town and from out of Cape

Town, from the continent and even over-

    seas, she says.

Allie reminded those who still wish to

participate in the 21km race to enter online

no later than Sunday 24 April. She con-

firmed that there will still be opportunities

to enter the other three events (5km fun

run/walk, 10km run and 10km big walk) on

Sunday 1May aswell as Friday 6 and Satur-

day 7 May at Cape Towns City Hall.

Come and explore this whole journey of

the Slave Route Challenge where you run

through the Castle, District Six, and Gar-

dens, through the Bo-Kaap and the Sea

Point area and back onto the Grand Parade

where you can see the beauty of Cape Town.

What other country can you stand on the

Grand Parade and look to see Table Moun-

tain, Devils Peak, and Signal Hill and then

you see Table Bay? Show me another place

that is as perfect as Cape Town, exclaimed

    Allie.
