Terwyl die nuus die laaste ruk oorheersis deur die storie van die meisie wat ná18 jaar deur haar ouers opgespoor is,

het ’n man van Brackenfell sy ma ná 47 jaarin sy arms gehou.

Hannes Binneman (55) en sy ma SarieArangies (84) het mekaar laas gesien toe hynege jaar oud was, maar hulle het al daardieverlore jare uitgewis toe hulle mekaar tweeweke gelede, op 24 Maart, by Sarie se huisin Ruyterwacht omhels het.

Toe Sarie die vorige dag ’n bietjie gaan lêhet, het sy nie te lekker gevoel nie. “Toe myfoon lui, het ek gewonder wie dit kan wees.Die manstem aan die anderkant het gevra ofek ’n dogter met die naam Marie, ’n broermet die naam Piet en ’n seun met die naamHannes het. Toe ek ‘ja’ antwoord, het hy ge-vra of ek sit of lê. Hy sê toe hy is Hannes,”vertel Sarie by haar huis in Princess Eliz-beth-straat in Ruyterwacht.

kon praat. “Ek en Hannes se pa is geskei toehy nege was, maar ek was werkloos en konnie vir hom sorg nie. Hy en sy suster het toeby sy pa gaan bly en ons het kontak verloor.

“Oor die jare het ek probeer kontak maakmet hom, maar familie het hom van my weg-gehou. Saans, wanneer ek alleen gelê het ennie kon slaap nie, het ek aan Hannes gedink.

“Was hy oukei? Watter soort mens het hygeword?” Die dag ná die oproep het Hannesby sy ma kom kuier. “Ons het mekaar eersnet vasgehou en het vir drie ure net gesels.Ek het ook al by hom en sy gesin gaan braai,”

vertel Sarie met trane van blydskap in haaroë.

Hannes, ’n sakeman, sê hy het ná die eg-skeiding nie veel aandag gegee aan ’n soek-tog na sy ma nie. “My pa is weer getroud met’n lieflike vrou. Sy was soos ’n maat vir myen soms het ek haar oor my skouer gedra.

“Soos ek egter ouer geword het, het dieverlange na my ma toegeneem. Ek het ge-weet my suster het my ma se nommer enadres, maar om een of ander rede wou sy ditnie vir my gee nie,” vertel hy.

na sy ma begin soek. “Haar nooiensvan wasVan Greunen en ek het uitgevind my oomwas die bestuurder van ’n Absa-bank in Ui-tenhage. My vrou bel toe die bank en hullehet wraggies nog die nommer van my oom.

“Sy eerste woorde aan my was ‘donner,nou praat ek weer na al die jare met jou’,”skerts Hannes.

By sy oom het hy toe sy ma se kontakbe-sonderhede gekry. “Toe ek die eerste keerbel, het ek haar net gesê wie ek is toe iemandin die kantoor kom. Ek moes sê ek bel weerterug. Dit isweird aan die begin, want jy ‘jy’en ‘jou’ nog – nog nie seker of jy moet masê nie. Die ontmoeting was vreemd, maarlekker. ’n Ou is mos nou ouer en bietjie onge-maklik met die vashouery, maar dit was virmy ’n wonderlike oomblik.”

Hulle het oor baie dinge gepraat, maar eending waaraan hulle nie wil peuter nie is dieverlede. “Ek het vir haar gesê ons moet watin die verlede gebeur het vergeet en voren-toe kyk. Sy is 84 en ’n mens weet nie hoe lanksy nog gaan lewe nie. So, ons moet die bestemaak van die tyd wat ons nog oor het.”

After various meetings between theWestern Cape education depart-ment (WCED), the department of

public works and the local councillor toaddress the issue of Valhalla High, theschool has been added to the list for sche-duled repairs in the 2015/2016 finacial ye-ar.The WCED provided this information

in response to an article in TygerBurgerlast week about the vandalism at theschool. The Ruyterwacht neighbourhoodwatch, which borders the school, com-plained that the vandalised classroomsare being used by unsavoury elements inthe community.WCED spokesperson Millicent Merton

said in order to protect schools in the pro-vince as far as possible fromburglary andvandalism, the WCED’s Safe Schools di-rectorate has increased security at someidentified high risk schools.“Unfortunately, despite these meas-

ures, some of our schools still fall victimto vandalism and burglaries. It is impor-tant for communities to take ownershipof the schools in their area and realisethey have an important role to play inprotecting their community’s assets.“The co-operation of the community is

essential in order to combat vandalismand create a safe school environment thatpromotes teaching and learning. We urgecommunity members to be extra vigilantthroughout the year and to immediatelyreport any suspicious behaviour or acti-vities that occur within the vicinity oftheir schools to report this immediately,”says Merton.She added therewere far toomany inci-

dents of vandalism at schools, which usu-ally occur in poorer communities. “Thisof course comes at a cost to the depart-ment, and diverts money away from ourlearners. The drive to get early learning centresregistered with the City and provincialgovernment is in full swing.

The Early Childhood Development(ECD) drive, which is a joint project be-tween City and province, will equip un-registered crèches, day-care centres andplayschools with the necessary informa-tion to ensure they become fully compli-ant ECD centres.

The drive began in February and willrun until 11 June, with visits by relevant

officials to all 24 City subcouncils.Heading the drive is the City’s social de-

velopment and ECD portfolio committeechairperson, Raelene Arendse.

She said the drive aims to supply infor-mation on the legal requirements and pro-cedures for registration to all relevantcentres.

Arendse said the City would meet withECD role-players in communities, offer-ing guidance and support with the regis-tration process.

Michael Britz, raadslid vir die gebied, sêdaar is ’n sterk vermoede dat mense wat indie bos woon, betrokke is by inbrake by dienabygeleë Hoërskool Valhalla en Apostolie-se Geloofsendig-kerk.

“Die grond is staatsgrond en ons het in dieverlede gevra dat dit skoongemaak word enbome en gras gesny word. Ek dink daarmoet versoek word dat die grond vir behui-singsdoeleindes gebruik word,” sê Britz.

A young resident in Stellenbergwas approached by one of thebicycle patrollers while walkinghome recently. Both he and I,and probably most residents inthe area, welcome the investiga-tion. However, the aggressiveand demeaning manner inwhich the patroller addressedthe resident is utterly unaccep-table. He was verbally abusiveto an innocent person.When challenged on his

attitude and his rationale, thepatroller said that he wastipped off by another resident.As it happens, this accostedresident is black and anotherpedestrian who is white wasnot suspected at all.This young man has walked

manShepherds,Huskies,Malamutes,Wolfhybrids,Rottweilers, PitBull Terrier,Bull-terriers, Staffordshire Bullterriers andGreyhounds.Yorkshire Terriers and other toy breeds

are increasingly popular. Persian and Sia-mese cats are also sometimes taken, Da-vies says.“Many people still don’t realise pet theft

is a very real problem. Stolen animals, usu-ally purebred dogs, are taken mainly forbreeding, guarding or dog fighting.“By not taking proper precautions, you

areputtingyour animals at risk, especiallyif you’ve chosen to keep a high risk breed.It’s very sad because most stolen dog casescould be prevented,” Davies says.According to the National Animal Wel-

fare Task Team, the main reason dogs arestolen is for breeding. Therefore, unneu-tered male dogs, lactating or pregnant fe-males or those on heat, and puppies are atparticular risk.“These ‘puppy mill’ dogs live in horrific

conditions and usually meet an equallyhorrific end,” Davies says.Thieves even lure unneuteredmale dogs

bywalkinganon-heat bitch throughneigh-bourhoods.“By having your pet sterilised, you re-

duce the risk of their theft and save everyanimal yourpetwould otherwisehave end-ed up giving birth to.“Responsible, caring pet owners who ar-

en’t registered breeders should have theirpets sterilised,” Davies says.Most dogs are stolen from their homes

–many are opportunistic crimes, but oftenthieves have been watching for a while.“Never leave dogs – especially puppies

or toy breeds – alone and visible, especiallyif you’re out all day. Consider ‘doggy day-care’ or leave them indoors.“Dogshave evenbeen stolenwhen let out

to ‘do their business’, so accompany them.If need be, separate front and back yardsand hide your dogs at the back. Even ifyour dog avoids strangers, it could still bedrugged or snagged with a catch pole,” shewarns.“Be aware of strangers in the area, in-

cluding children, especially if they arepeering into yards, watching dog walkersor questioning you about your dog.“Never allow dogs to roam the street or

leave them in your car or tied up in frontof a shop,” she says.Davies suggested pet owners put a collar

and tag on their pet and have them micro-chipped.The FAW, which works in the township
