Soos ek aangery gekom het, hetek gesien die ou gaan by my huis in.
as jywerk soeknie.
“Ek is net dankbaarniemandhetseergekry nie.

sekering gehad nie, so alles wat binne-in diehuis was, is daarmee heen.

Ao.
Honde is steeds jou beste afskrik-middel,” sê Mostert.
Hy het die volgende wenke gegee:. Wanneer jy sien sekere items word by
jou bure se huis in ’n motor gelaai, stel on-dersoek in. Jy is nie nuuskierig nie, net pa-raat;
. Wees op die uitkyk vir mense wat doel-loos in die straat ronddwaal;
. As jy ’n geskree of harde stemme laatin die nag hoor, bel die polisie. Jy kan ie-mand se lewe red;

Arecent Changing Lives for Good sum-mit held at the Parow Civic Centreresolved that, in order tomanage and
overcome the homelessness, street peopleand vagrancy crisis in the northern sub-urbs, a “whole of society” approach needsto be adopted.
Five speakers of key organisations deliv-ered presentations on how they tackle thisdilemma daily and on a practical basis.
According to Wilma Piek, head of theVRCID social development programme, itis not easy to help a homeless person be-cause they have complex needs. But, shesaid, it is crucial for organisations to be“on the same page” in order to make a dif-ference. The main aim, she said, is to “getthe street person to a space where he canact responsibly to the opportunities of-fered” and added that in the Bellville andParow areas, there are currently up to 700destitute people.
“We need shelter, reunifications withfamilies, IDbooks, more rehabilitation ser-vices and employment opportunities withskills development,” she said.
“We need to acknowledge that the mosteffective solutions will often be designedand delivered at a local level by being pro-active,” said Clive Justus, chairperson ofsubcouncil 4, who hosted the summit.
He referred to organisations such asMeals on Wheels that have made morethan 1,3 million warm, balanced mealssince 1969 with the help of volunteers anddonors.
Cornelia Finch, who leads the City’sGive Responsibly campaign, said in her
presentation by now it is common knowl-edge that handing out money to the home-less sustains the poverty cycle.
“Many people feel that it is their Christianduty to help in this way, but there are otherways of giving.”
She said there were many organisationswhere financial support can help the home-less to be rehabilitated and reintegrated.
These include:. The Bellville Haven night shelter in
South Street.“Instead of giving someone money, you
can buy him or her a Haven passport for R50.With this passport they can come and show-er, get a toiletries pack, have a warm mealand sleep in a bed. We also offer a social anda rehabilitation service,” says George Nark-edien of the shelter.
He says this is a basic service, but theyhave many positive outcomes. Still they arevery poorly supported by the communityand bed space is limited.
“We can use anything from cleaning prod-ucts to old clothes and what we do not use,we recycle or give to other organisations,”he says. Contact The Haven on 021 945 1413or [email protected].
. Metro Evangelical Services (MES) haveoffices in Davies Street, Bellville and inVoortrekker Road, Parow. They cook closeto 1 000 meals per week, of which most isbought with a meal voucher. They mainlyoffer job rehabilitation through their Growprojects. Grow is a participation processwhere one can work as a general worker ina teamand canmoveon to becomea foremanor supervisor. There is opportunity to betteryourself and to earn money.
“You can move to the next level if you hadsessions with the social workers and made
certain goals. In the last six months we had2 210 shifts, 1 620 opportunities to get cashin hand, 93 street people benefitted and 59newpeople entered the programme,” IlseElsfrom MES said at the summit.
Els says MES needs cleaning and mainte-nance contracts for their Grow workers.

River Industrial, has evolved into an assess-ment and skills development centre assist-ing with access to rehabilitation pro-grammes, job placements and the integra-tion of the individual back into society.
Liza Ortell, house mother of Elim, sayswhat they primarily need is for people to de-liver on their promises.
“Many people say they want to help, butthen we never see them again. We alwaysneed food. We have a wonderful gardener, butweneed seeds.Weneedwood suchaspal-lets for our furniture workshop,” she says.Ortell says any second-hand donations aresold in their thrift shop that help finance theshelter, where 70 people can stay.
Contact Elim on 021 591 2824 or [email protected].
. The Tygerberg Association for StreetPeople (Tasp) in Charl Malan Street, Bell-ville, aims interventions at retaining thefamily unit by encouraging the breaking ofbad habits and providing support for thosein crisis always working toward an exitstrategy where independence and self-worthis achieved.

“It is time we as community take careof the police,” says pastor LouiseHoneyman, a volunteer at the Bell-
ville police trauma room.Honeyman, an intern at Vredelust NG
Kerk, studies social services andhumansci-ences, specialising in criminology and soci-ology.All of thishas created apainful awareness
of what kind of stress members of the policework under, she says.“My research shows that there is only one
psychologist available for every 100 policeofficers. Where other service providers likelaw enforcement have a functioning emo-tional wellness programme, I think the po-lice are being neglected,” she says. With the support of the Synod of the NG
Kerk, she initiated a training and develop-ment workshop to look at trauma and thewell-being of individuals in the safety andsecurity sector. In collaboration with psychologists and
care workers from across the globe the firstof these workshops were held at the Vrede-lust Auditorium on 12 October.Doctors Robert and Terri Watson, post
traumatic stress syndrome counsellors andpsychologists from Illinois led the work-shop while Richard Petersen, a retired sen-
ior sergeant who runs an emotional well-ness programme also in Illinois, took partin the proceedings on a Skype connectionthat was projected on a screen in the audito-rium.The programme consisted of talks about
understanding trauma, how policing in theUnited States correlates with policing hereand how to take “soul care” of yourself.Almost 70 attendees, which included
members of law enforcement and the metropolice from as far as stations in Wellington, turned up at the first workshop, and al-though 150 were expected, Honeyman feelsit was a roaring success.“Thiswas just the start.Once Ihave estab-
lished a care network, theVredelust churchand the synod will be supporting it. We nowjust need the buy-in from the department ofsafety and security and the police.”Attendees all had to take part in a survey
about how they experience and deal withstress and trauma. What is alarming aboutthe results of this survey, Honeyman says,is the general consensus that there is notenough debriefing opportunity for officerson the ground and that a “us versus them”mentality exists with their management. The majority also do not feel respected andsupported by their community.“I would like to meet Dan Plato and JP
Smith now and talk about the results of thissurvey. We need buy-in from them to utilise
the network of psychologists, councillorsand socialworkers that is already available.“Wealsowant to build anetworkof people
who can help on a pro-bono basis with oneon one therapy.“What I need right now is suggestions. I
need to grow a network and then I canmakeinformeddecisions. Thisworkshopwas justthe start,” Honeyman says.Immediately after the workshop she cre-
ated a Facebook group “Police Care andSupport Network” which is steadily grow-ing. “I am already receiving messages frompeople whowould like to become involved,”she says.“(MajorGeneral Thembisile) Patekile has
not responded to numerous emails I sent,”she says, but adds that she will not be dis-couraged by this.“I bite into something like a pit bull. I do
not let go.” Attendees of the first workshopwere sent home with an “assess yourself”worksheet, a questionnaire that rates thelevel that individuals look after themselveson a physical, emotional, mental, spiritualand relational way. Honeyman says hope-fully this will help to break the perceptionthat it is not OK to talk about trauma.V Contact Louise Honeyman at louiseh@churchadventure.co.za or visit the Police Care and SupportNetwork Facebook page for more information andjoin them if you would like to become involved inthe care network.

aangekom.
Dié spanhet hul eie tokskamermet foto’svan vorige spanne as aansporing.
“Arthur is voorwaar ’n staat-maker. Sedert hy gematrikuleer het, hethy steeds ’n ambassadeur van die skoolgebly. Hy help met bemarking en fonds-insameling en het ook gereël dat ’n mo-nument by die skool opgerig word. No licence disc renewal notices were issuedin September and October and many motor-ists now have to pay fines for late renewalsbecause they were not notified. This is be-cause of the National Department of Trans-port’s (DOT) transfer of the Electronic Na-tional Traffic Information System (eNaTIS)to the Road Traffic Management Centre.
The City’s Mayco member for finance, IanNeilson, has now called onDOTand theRoadTrafficManagement Centre to sort this prob-lem out before November, which, he says, istraditionally the busiest month of the yearfor vehicle disc renewals.
Motorists are normally issued with renew-al notices three to fourweeks before the expi-ry date on the current licence disc. licencediscs that expire on 31 Octoberwill be renew-able until 21 November.
Nielsen urges motorists to act proactivelyto ensure that the necessary arrangementsaremade and to renew discs online at http://goo.gl/Kql0tT.“Under the Motor Vehicle Licensing tab,
click on ‘register’ (for new applicants) or ‘lo-gin’ (for those already registered for e-Servi-ces). Youwill be prompted to complete an on-line registration form and will be requiredto upload the necessary documents.”The application process takes three work-
ing days for new applicants and twoworkingdays for applicants who are already regis-teredHe says theCity’s call centre canbephoned
on 0860 103 089 to find out the amount owing.Alternatively, motorists can visit their
nearest vehicle licensing office.“Take your identity document, complete a
green Application for Licencing of Motor Ve-hicle form (ALV form), and renew your li-cence at the counter,” Neilsen says.

The suburb of Bothasig celebrated its50thbirthdayonSaturdaywith apartyat the Bothasig Community Hall.
The town was established in 1964 after aproclamation appeared for the rezoning ofa portion of property known as Bosmans-dam. The purpose was to create a muchneeded housing development for themiddleincome group.
Local ward councillor Helen Carstenssays the development was done during thetime when PW Botha was still the housingminister. “Botha handed over the firsthouse on 26 October 1965. An applicationwas made by the residents the followingyear for a name change. A competition wasrun in a local newspaper and the name waschanged from Bosmansdam to Bothasig. The first pioneers ofBothasigwerenot how-ever welcomed by an instant paradise. What they did find was a township whereonly the essentials had been provided.
“With the cleaning of building plots, theyhad a lot of sand to contend with. This, cou-pled to the fact that there were virtually nofacilities, called for total commitment fromthe first inhabitants,” says Carstens.
First a primary school, then the post officeFirst to come was a primary school, then
a post office and by July of 1968 the erectionof a community hallwas approved, followedby the establishment of a bilingual crèche.
“Development and growth continued andin 1983 when the private sector was calledupon to further develop the last section ofthe town, which was then known as Viben. To think back to the humble beginnings andto look at Bothasig today, we see a vastgrowth in residents, in facilities and in in-frastructure. Bothasig has a deep heritage
and every single resident can indeed beproud. The suburb has changed and growntremendously over the past 50 years.“From amere 300 dwellings in 1965, Both-
asig nowhas, as per the 2011 census, a popu-lation of around 12 000, and has approxi-mately 4 000 dwellings.“When comparing Bothasig of yester-
year to the Bothasig we know today, it isquite remarkable how this suburb, being avery family based suburb, has changed overthe years. There is a great diversity of peo-ple who now reside in Bothasig in compari-son to the people who initially started off inBothasig 50 years ago,” according to Car-stens.
Four malls, high schools, clinic . . .Today Bothasig has four shopping cen-
tres, a high school (BosmansdamHigh), twoprimary schools (Bosmansdam Primaryand Wolraad Woltemade Primary) and acombined primary and high school (Tafel-berg School). There are a number of crèchesand a few private schools. The suburbboasts a health clinic, post office, police sta-tion, a fynbos reserve, many churches ca-tering for most congregations, many medi-cal consulting rooms (doctors, dentists, op-tometrists) as well as small businesses.Bothasig also has a first class sport cen-
tre, namely the Abe Sher Stadium, whichcaters for a large variety of sports from soc-cer to baseball and more.“Fromthevery first residentsup to today,
many people have helped to shape and growthe area, to which we extend our thanks to,including Kent Durr, the late Tony Fraque,Claudette Lee and James Vos.“Bothasig means various things to vari-
ous people and what many people don’tknow, for me, Bothasig was the first placeI called home when my husband and Ibought our first house here.”
The Bothasig police would like to remindfirearm owners to check their firearm li-cences and competencies to ensure thatthey are still valid.
According to Warrant Officer JacquesNaudé, the designated firearm officer atBothasig, owners need to apply 90 days be-fore the expiry date of the licence and thecompetency card. When applying for the renewal of a com-
petency certificate, it is not necessary togo for training again. Firearm owners on-ly need to apply for renewal of it and thefirearm licence at the local firearm office.
Firearm owners need to take note of thefact that if they have applied and receivedthe new licence, then the old green cardfor that weapon will no longer be valid. They must also inform SAPS regarding achange of address if theyhavemoved fromthe premises where they resided whenthey originally applied for their licence. This should be done at the SAPS officewhich serves the new address.V Anyone wishing to enquire more information regarding the application or renewal process cancontact Naudé or Mr Mninawe Daweti during office hours on 021 559 9414 and 021 559 9425.

“It doesn’t matter that I amdeaf. This is who I am andI am proud to show others
that we are just as capable as anyother person,” says Jean-ClaudeSmit from Kraaifontein. This 17-year-old smashed bound-
arieswhenhewas recently elected, with amajority vote, as the first ev-er disabled person to be none otherthan Speaker of theChildren’s Par-liament.And itwasprecisely this courage
and leadership skills that prompt-edhis deputyprincipal at theDeLaBat School for the Deaf in Worces-ter to nominate him to this pro-gramme.The fifth annualNelsonMandela
Children’s Parliament congregat-ed in the Free State Legislaturefrom 5 to 7October to tackle a num-ber of serious issues pertaining tothe protection of children. Those included forced childmar-
riages, the death of young boys ininitiation schools, and girls due toillegal abortions, as well as vio-lence in schools.
Huge step for deaf peopleFor Jean-Claude, this was the
ideal opportunity to correct mis-conceptions the public have aboutdeaf people.“Being deaf and having deaf par-
ents, this is really a huge step for-ward for me as well as other deafpeople, especially deaf kids whonow know anything is possible. InSouth Africa many people viewdeafness as an illness and some-thing that needs to be fixed. But
now I can stand up and saythis is not true. As a deafperson I have many oppor-tunities and can participatein many things. I am notafraid to show that I can doanything,” he says.He describes the Chil-
dren’s Parliament as anamazing opportunity forchildren to learn what gov-ernance is all about.“During these few days
we participated in severalcommissions and identifiedmany problems within ourschools. Kids from all theprovinces were representedand it was enlightening tosee that communities allover the country are afflict-ed by similar problems.Drug abuse, teenage preg-nancies and gangsterismare plaguing our youth andIwould like to see the adultsat parliament take us aschildren seriously,” hesays. The issues discussed over
the two-day session weredrawn up into a declarationand signed and Jean-Claudeis quick to add that this dec-laration should not just beseen as a piece of paper, andthat it was drawn up for areason. The Children’s Parlia-
ment is a key programme of SocialDevelopment Month (October),hosted by the Department of SocialDevelopment to provide a platformfor children to participate in de-mocracy – to be seen and heard, ex-plains Lumka Oliphant, spokes-
person of the department. And Jean-Claude is adamant
that these rights be obligated.“I believe that change startswith
us, the youth of South Africa. Itwill not help if we sit back andwaitfor others to do the work. All of us
should work together to-wards the same goal, nomatter who you are, whereyou live or what languageyou speak,” he says.
‘I am deaf, not dumb’He also said he wanted to
focus on helping childrenwho face challenges athome.“Many children are ex-
posed to bad things in theirhomes, like abuse and par-ents who abuse drugs andalcohol. These childrenthen bring their experien-ces to school leading to bul-lying, peer pressure and theformation of gangs inschools. We therefore needto find ways to improve thehomeenvironmentbecausethat is where most prob-lems start.”Lumka says the outcome
of the Children’s Parlia-ment will now be incorpo-rated into ongoing plan-ning for the advancementof children’s rights. In his free time, Jean-
Claude loves playing sportssuch as swimming and golfand like any other kid hisage, he also loves technolo-gy.“I think it is important
for deaf kids to be able touse technology. We are normal likeany other person, but becausehearing people cannot communi-cate with us, some think we aredeaf and dumb. We can read andwrite other languages and we canspeak with our hands!”

What is the problem withresidents who, after their binshave been emptied, ignore therubbish which has been leftbehind and littering thepavements after the homelesspeople have ravaged theirbins? Yes, I realise it is not theresidents who put it there butsurely we should all haveenough pride in our communi-ty to pick it up and put it backin our bins? The dustbin mendo not have time to clean upas they move down the street, yet it only takes a few minutesfor homeowners to do so. Theresults are obvious – rubbishand debris are left to blowabout in the wind.
I wonder too, just how manypeople take the time to cleanout their dirty bins? I so oftenpass many bins which arefilthy and very unhygienic.
Summer is coming and soare the flies. Let’s do our bit.

I refer to the letter fromAnonymous “Why have kids ifyou are poor?” (TB, 14 Octo-ber) which was in response toRonel Button’s letter “Whatcan we do to really help” (TB,7 October).
Why do you assume that the“poor” person wanted to havechildren? Have you everconsidered that perhaps hercircumstances might havechanged over the years?
There’s a huge differencebetween someone who is poordue to circumstances and onewho abuses the system, havekids and take the money forthemselves. I meet a lot ofpeople who are poor, clean andhappy. They may not have foodevery day but try their best todo their best for their children!Think twice before you judge
Think before youjudge poor people
and offer your “free” advice.Don’t think that birth control isgoing to solve all of our socialproblems. That’s a very narrowminded perspective.

I am an eager patron andhave always visited the libraryduring my lunch break when-ever I needed to take a break. Ihave always been a bookwormand it is so refreshing to escapeto such a welcoming library. Iurge all residents of Parow,Bellville and the surroundingareas to support this library. Iam also proud of the library asthey support worthy causessuch as breast cancer aware-ness. May the Parow library gofrom strength to strength.

Our drivingbehaviourshould changeWhile Transport Month (October) is aninitiative by the South African govern-ment to create awareness about theimpact of transport on the economy, it’salso a good time to highlight issuesaround road safety.
According to a report by the RoadTraffic Management Corporation, roughly40 people die on South African roadsevery day. There were around 1 368fatalities over the 2014/2015 festive seasonalone.
The sad reality about this high numberof deaths is the fact that road accidentscan often be avoided.
The Automobile Association of SouthAfrica (AA)’s top road safety tip isalways wearing a seatbelt. A close secondis: “Never drink and drive”. They dopoint out however that pedestrians whoare above the legal alcohol limit are justas vulnerable as motorists.
Another cause of road deaths is fatigue. The AA suggests safety breaks every twohours when travelling long distances toavoid eye strain and tiredness whichaffects a driver’s ability to focus.
A few simple changes in our drivingbehaviour, especially as we head into thefestive season, could be the major differ-ence between being involved in anaccident or arriving at your destinationsafely.
While it’s easy to say “I’m in a hurry”or “it’s just around the corner”, one hasto ask: Is it really worth the risk not totake a few seconds to make sure youarrive safely?

SMSV I applaud you for the cell etiquette arti-cle. It’s disconcerning when this happensin church. What are we teaching our futu-re generation? Our kids, God bless them, will point out that it’s uncool and disres-pectful to be on your phone around a din-ner table and in church. They are 7 and 4.Parents! Wake up! You are responsible fortheir behaviour and our country’s future!- Melanie

- Thanksfor the memory

LOUISA STEYL@lounotes
When she was just five years old, ateacher told her she spoke too much.
Her teacher said she should rathersing until she got tired of hervoice. It didn’t work; insteadKarla Christene’s passion forsinging was ignited.
“If I’m sad, if I’m excited –what-ever I’m feeling, musicjust speaks to me,” the Bell-ville singer says.
Although she competed inmany competitions, her pro-fessional career took off in2008, when she was invited toperform at Club Mykonos inLangebaan. Since then shehas performed on festival sta-ges all over the country.
Karla, or Kaycee as shesometimes calls herself onstage, struggles to define thegenre of her music.
Being a people pleaser, she has a diverserepertoire on stage – from her own Englishand Afrikaans originals to the “golden ol-dies” she adds to be able to better connectwith her fans.
Karla released her second album, EersteLiefde (first love) in March. After hearing thetitle track, a Belgian fan invited her to launchthe album and tour in Europe.
“The tour was amazing.” She played at abig South African music festival in Belgiumbefore heading to the Netherlands andFrance and says her audiences enjoyed herstyle and danced along to the music.
“Everyone in Belgium welcomed us withopen arms.”
Since returning, she’s been performing hernormal shows, along with a few fund-raisers,and was nominated a second time in the New-comer of the Year category at this year’s Bok-kie awards.
She has also been commissioned to be partof the international Euro Cov-ers project. She has beenasked to sing Afrikaans trans-lations of two of the songsfrom this year’s EurovisionSong Contest for a compila-tion album due to be releasedin Austria in May.
She is already performingone of the songs Dis nou dietyd vir my at her local per-formances.
“I must admit it’s a big hon-our to be approached to be in-volved in something that’ssuch a big opportunity.”
Karla says having an activefan base sharing her posts andthe fact that her music is play-
ing on quite a few internet radio stationshave helped her gain these international op-portunities.
She often links her name to benefit con-certs and is the ambassador for Happy Heartscare centre, a non-profit organisation thatworks with children and the elderly.
Locals can see Karla in action this week-end when she performs at the KraaifonteinOctober Fest at Zoo Park on Saturday from12:00.
On Friday 30 October she’ll be performingat a fund-raising concert for the Justice forNadia Stephanie Bond group.V For more information about Karla or her upcomingshows, visit her website at www.karlachristene.comor visit her Facebook page: “Karla Fan Page”.

KILLARNEY: LAMBO, PORSCHE RACING AT ITS BEST
Viper to take a bite
Francis Carruthers closely followed by Johan Engelbrecht, are two of the local sport and GTdrivers to keep an eye on on Saturday. PHOTO: DAVE COLINS
ADRIAN PHEIFFER
With exciting sports car entries thatinclude the first appearance ofCharl Arangies in his racing V10
Lamborghini Galardo LM2 at Killarney, theCape round of the national Extreme Festivalon Saturday promises to be one of the bestever.
The result of the battle between the Lam-borghini and Craig Jarvis’s 8.4 litre V10Dodge Viper that has finally been cured ofits transmission problems is difficult to pre-dict.
However, with current champion FrancisCarruthers (Juno SS3), Gauteng driverNicky Dicks (Porsche GT3 Cup) and JohanEngelbrecht, who was in magnificent formin his Porsche GT2R during the most recentround of the Extreme Festival at the Zwart-kops Raceway in Gauteng also on the entrylist, the Lambo and Viper may not have theadvantage of a clear track.
Then there’s the South African Produc-tion Car series that is still wide open and iscurrently being fought out between the su-per quick all-wheel-drive S4 Audis of Mich-ael Stephan (Engen Extreme) and a pair ofSasol entries that have been entrusted toformer WesBank champion Hennie Groe-newald and Gennaro Bonafede.
Others who have to be considered here in-clude Simon Moss in another Engen Ex-
treme Audi S4, Graeme Nathan (GenuineParts Golf GTi) and possibly Greg Maloneyin his quick Mini Cooper S.
The Cape challenge is being provided by
a selection of BMW models in the hands ofEbrahim Levy, Junaid Slamang, AchmatAchmat and Philip Booysen.
Although teenage star Sheldon van der
Linde (VW Polo) is expected to be the guyto beat in the Engen Volkswagen Cup events,he will not find it easy against the likes ofDaniel Rowe, Shaun Le Reservee and im-pressive young lady driver Tasmin Pepper.
With the Single Seater Formula Fordevents, the closest to F1 anyone is ever likelyto see at Killarney, the entry list offers inter-esting reading.
Apart from a pair of Van Diemens in thehands of leading contenders Nicholas vanWeely and Allen Meyer, the balance of thefield consists of a variety of Mygale models.
Drivers to watch here include formerchampions Ian Schofield and Robert Wolk.
An excellent entry has also been receivedfor the Bold Marine GTi Challenge eventswhere reigning champion Paul Simon willbe defending his crown against the likes offellow class C driver Ebrahim Levy. Aheadof them, the battle will almost certainly befought out between class A front runnersChristopher Swart, Bessie Bester and the ag-gressive young Marco Busi.
While the racing will be the main attrac-tion, there will be a host of static events toemphasise the festival’s family appeal. These include a fun fair with a number ofcarnival rides, displays of racing cars andmotorcycles, radio controlled model planesand high altitude stilt walkers, while a 170-year old Penny-Farthing bicycle will be onthe circuit during the lunch break.

Zoë looking good on skatesCentury City runner and three times Com-rades winner Vladimir Kotov recently re-turned from his native Belarus where heparticipated in the Minsk half marathon atthe invitation of the Belarus minister ofsport and president of the Belarus AthleticFederation.
Celebrated as a national hero and “thechampion of Belarus”, Vladimir’s recordtime for a half marathon has not been bro-ken in 31 years and his record for the fullmarathon not for 35 years!
Vladimir, who runs for the Century CityAthletic Club and owns a sports shoe shopin the Fives Futbal complex in Century City, has been invited back to Belarus again nextyear to not only participate in the Minsk halfmarathon in September, but to precede this
with a 1 500 km run around the country pro-moting running as a sport.
He will be accompanied by fellow long-dis-tance runner David Grier, starting in thetown of his birth, Vitsyebsk, and workinganti-clockwise around the country throughmajor towns such as Hrodna, Brest, Homyel,Mahilyow, Orsha, Barysaw, Zhodzina and fi-nally Minsk in time for the half marathon.
“While cycling is a huge sport in Belarus, running is not nearly as popular, so we willbe running 50 km to 60 km a day for a monthto promote running,” he says.
Asked how he prepares for races, Vladim-ir says when he is not competing, he eats allkinds of food.
Before a competition he follows a strict di-et with lots of protein.
Vladimir still has it after 35 yrs
