dwarsboming van die gereg, korrupsie, be-

    drog, rampokkery, vuurwapenhandel en

    geldwassery in.

    Die ondersoek na ongerymdhede tussen

die polisiehos en Dawjee is reeds sedert

2013 aan die gang, met uiteenlopende beta-

lings deur Dawjee wat glo reeds sedert 2011

aan hulle gemaak is. Van die onrelmatig-

hede sluit in betalings vir verblyf, vlieg-

    tuigkaartjies, weelderige voertuie wat vir

die beamptes gekoop of gehuur is.

    taal vir swembaddienste en petrolverbruik

    by n vulstasie in Goodwood.

mekaar haal, in die noordelike voorstede be-

    drywig is.

sy bakkie by N1-stad gesteel is. N net drie

ure is die bakkie in Phillipi gevind, onher-

stelbaar beskadig. Die onderdele word glo

    onwettig landuit gestuur.

    Ao.WayneTheunis, polisiewoordvoerder,

    shoewelhulle bewus is vandie eenvoorval,

    ander motors, s Theunis.

Load shedding is endangering the lives of

residents in Bothasig as roads become dan-

gerous when traffic lights stop working.

    Community Policing Forum chairperson

Neal de Witt said after constantly hearing

complaints about how badly people were

driving during blackouts, he decided to go

    see for himself.

I went out for two nights to witness it for

myself. I must say how disgusted I am with

those residents who blatantly disregard the

traffic rules and common road courtesy.

When a traffic light or lights are out it be-

    comes a four-way stop, not a four-way go-

    for-it, says De Witt.

He urged residents to reduce speed when

    they approach an intersection.

When load shedding is in place, people

should reduce their speed. They must stop

at an intersection too. I know that when ap-

proaching an intersection and you dont see

the lights of another vehicle coming to-

wards you, you presume it is safe.

De Witt said he saw how dangerous that

    presumption can be.

In the first incident a speeding motorist

drove through an intersection where the

traffic lights did not work due to load shed-

ding. He did not see any lights coming from

the other direction and he drove on. There

was a pedestrianwhowas crossing the road

and luckily for him it was a near miss. If

he hit and killed the pedestrian, it would

    have been culpable homicide,which carries

a prison sentence. I personally would have

stood witness against the driver, he said.

In the second incident, hewitnessed a car

without any lights on skip all the traffic

    lights in Vryburger Avenue.

    City traffic services spokesperson Max-

ine Jordaan said there hasnt been and in-

crease in road accidents during load shed-

    ding.

Road users have been really compliant

and we are really grateful for that. I think

because the load shedding is scheduled, peo-

ple can prepare their driving times in ad-

    vance, says Jordaan.

She urged drivers to always treat inter-

sections as four-way stops as a general

rule and not only during load shedding.

    @gvdcapejazz

    A

    local entertainment family has initi-

    atedaproject to empoweranewgener-

    ation on the Cape Flats.

Jonathan Butler is well-known on the in-

ternational jazz scene, but when you hear

Jonathan performing with some of the best

in the business, it is easy to understand his

talent was fostered by multi-talented sib-

lings, some of whom are still plying their

trade on the local entertainment scene.

Now, they are about to share that knowl-

    edge with a new generation.

This family legacy has its roots in Seventh

Avenue in Belgravia where Jonathan was

the youngest of 17 children. His siblings San-

dra, Vicky, Veronica and Danny became

household names on the cabaret circuit in

the 1970s and 1980s. Musicians such as Pon-

ties, Paul, Ian, Tony andGregory are still re-

vered by the older generation and a new gen-

eration has started making inroads on the

music scene now its about to grow.

Michael-John Sias, Sandras son, is lead-

ing the sharing of that legacy through start-

ing Butler Youth Development based in Bel-

    har.

The timehas come for us tomake the peo-

ple aware of this family, the rich history in

music, and empower them through this mu-

    sical development programme by making

them aware of their talents, he said.

Through music we can keep them off the

streets and away from so many negative in-

    fluences around them.

Michael-John said the project will also

run as a group associated with the Cape Dis-

    trict Minstrel Association.

Our family roots are with the minstrels

because it all stemmed frommy grandfather

Abraham Oupa Kool Butler and his wife,

Elizabeth. He had a group in those days

where all the children got their start in the

music business. The time has come for the

family to get back to those roots.

    Sandra, now

    Miller, was excit-

    ed about the ini-

    tiative and said

    her son had been

    nagging her to

    get something

    started.

    The two of us

    share a love for

    music, especially

    the minstrel tra-

    dition, and we at-

    tend all the com-

    petitions every

    year, she said.

    He under-

stood the legacy of the family and always

said we must start something to preserve

that legacy because some of the family have

    already passed on.With this projectwewant

to show the children that hard work will get

you success in life and music is one of the

    tools we want to use.

Michael-John also pointed out they have

some challenges and are looking for busi-

nesses to partnerwith them in this new initi-

ative. Were working very hard to raise

some money but we need people to come on

    board and help us.

My uncle, Jonathan, was in town during

the festive season. He sawwhatwe are doing

and is very supportive. If we can grow I am

sure there are others who can obtain the

    same success.

Liewe Heksie: Flower Power, n amperse

pantomime, is van 19 tot 31Mei opdie planke

    in dieBellville-burgersentrumenTygerBur-

    weer kyk.

Haar resensie, wat in Die Burger verskyn

    het, lees as volg:

Ek het laas soveel pret gehad op die slippe-

ry slide by die kerkbraai verlede somer.

Liewe Heksie en al die geliefde karakters

van die oorbekende stories is daar, maar

    hulle skopgat.Heksie (MargitMeyer-Rden-

is n tipiese dame soos in elke pantomime

gevindword.

Skuins

opmerkings word so flink ingegooi dat n

mens hulle amper mis. Die stukkies musiek

tussenin s feitlik net soveel soos die dia-

loog.

Hannes vanWyk as koning Rosekrans is be-

hoorlik dof en bewerig, die feprinses (Zan-

ne Stapelberg) kook letterlik en figuurlik n

storm los enKarel Kat katermaai soos nwa-

re heer. Matewis (Luca Human) is opvreet-

baar, die gifappels Kerrie en Borrie (De

    KlerkOelofse) verpersoonlik n gesplete per-

    soonlikheidperfek enashoenderhetCrystal

Donna Roberts werklik haar droomrol ge-

vind. Die humor bespring jou, die kostuums

is wonderlik. Die dekor is pragtig, maar in

n volmaaktewreld sou swart figure die toe-

rusting onsigbaar verander het terwyl die

verhoog sou draai na die volgende toneel.

LizzMeiring se regie is so vrolik soos haar

polkadot-spanbroek en -hemp. En die hele

produksie is bedot, betotteld en betowerend,

    aldus Malan.

Kaartjies vir Liewe Heksie: Flower Power

    is beskikbaar by Computicket. Bespreek

Staff from GrandWest Casino and learners

from De Waveren Primary School recently

cleaned up the Elsies River canal duringNa-

    tional Water Week.

They were joined by councillors from the

    different wards, GrandWest concessionai-

    res, the Metropolitan Community Forum,

and City of Cape Town staff.

The event, which highlighted the impor-

tance of conserving fresh water resources

    and promoting environmental sustainabili-

ty, included educational talks by guest spea-

kers as well as activities with Manzi, the

City of Cape Towns watermascot, to convey

    serious water-savingmessages in a funway.

    GrandWests Grannies Green Nursery, City

Parks, and the Invasive Species Unit also

hosted interactive learning sessions on wa-

    ter saving plants, and fynbos.

Water is a scarce and precious resource

which must be used mindfully. We all have

to make an effort to preserve the environ-

ment so there is enough water and food to

sustain the population. Water Week serves

to highlight the obligation everyone has to

save water and protect natural resources.

GrandWest appreciates the efforts of everyo-

ne who participated in our water awareness

    event, says Bongeka Ndikinda, environ-

    mental officer at GrandWest.

    Elsies canal gets cleaned up

Learners from De Waveren Primary School were

amongst the team of 146 greenconscious

people who spent a day cleaning up the Elsies

River canal to mark Water Week 2015. At the

event, hosted by GrandWest, are from left

Raees Van Niekerk, Max Dingaan, Jesse Lukas,

    Reece Maloy, and Chadlyn Arends.

    The consolidation of the Citys

    Technical Operations Centre

    (TOC) will uproot families.

    So says Lennox Bonile, regio-

nal chairperson of the South Af-

    rican Municipal Workers Union

    (Samwu). Bonile spoke after

    TOC workers staged strike acti-

on on Friday to highlight their

    grievances. The TOC is moving

    from Hardekraaltjie in Bellville

to the city centre. Members we-

re not informed in good time. So-

    me people design their lives

around where they live, so mo-

ving the place of work will also

have an impact on their lives,

    says Bonile.

    The City disputed Boniles

    claims. The staff disruption has

occurred as a result of the Citys

    efforts to consolidate the Citys

    Corporate Call Centre andWater

    TOC Call Centre. The objective

of this merge is to streamline re-

    sidents communications with

the City into one single access

    point, as statement read.

    The City has engaged with

    employees about the merger for

some months but some have, for

    a variety of reasons, demonstra-

ted their resistance on the basis

that they were not properly con-

sulted and engaged on the transi-

    tion. The City refutes these

    claims.

The Friends of Medecins Sans Frontieres

    (Doctors Without Borders) Stellenbosch will

be hosting a 6 km trail run at the Tygerberg

    Nature Reserve on 25 April.

The society was formed by medical stu-

dents at Stellenbosch University to support

the work done by Medecins Sans Frontieres

    (MSF).

As the Friends of MSF we aim to raise

awareness and funds for the organisation,

    said organisor Megan van Grensen.

Registration starts at 07:00 on theday in the

parking area, and the fun run at 09:00.

Tickets cost R50 per person and will be on

sale at the reserves shop on the day.

Participants are encouraged to bring their

own water, but snacks and other beverages

will be supplied by the Seattle Coffee Compa-

ny and Huis Francie van Zijl Residence.

    Limited parking is available.

Med students host run for borderless doctors

    Theyhave finallymoved into their newpre-

    mises lock, stock and children.

They refers to the staff of Iris House, a

home for terminally ill children who were

granted a very run down property by the

department of publicworks on the Stikland

    grounds in December last year.

The hospice, which used to be a mobile

service, will now operate from these premi-

ses after extensive renovations were com-

pleted, having officially opened their doors

    last week.

There will be week day respite care sessi-

ons held at the centre for children not atten-

ding school or receiving adequate carewhi-

le their parents are working, said Sue van

der Linde, the driving force behind Iris

    House.

There is also a Saturday session forwor-

kingmoms and dads to allow them some ti-

    me off, Sue said.

    Emergency and planned overnight care

will be provided to parents who find them-

selves exhausted and not able to cope, she

said, adding that short stay holiday care

was also set up to give parents a complete

    break.

This would ensure parents had time to fo-

cus on their other children and their own

    relationship, Sue said.

The end of life care service will be provi-

ded in a family room where Mom and Dad

can spend the last precious days of their

childs life together with their child in a lo-

ving and caring environment, she said.

Iris House Childrens Hospice was origi-

    nally startedwithSue andherhusbandFer-

di providing the running costs, but the fun-

draising team has since raised over

    R2.5 million through corporate donations,

online platforms, an e-shop and events.

The Western Cape department of social

development has also increased their initi-

    al funding of R220 000 in 2012 to R540 000 in

    2013, to R1 million in 2014.

This provides 41% of the charitys run-

    ning costs, Sue said.

A business plan has been submitted for

approval for the 2015 to 2016 funding period.

Sue said they were in talks with the de-

partment of health and Iris House is extre-

mely optimistic they will receive support

V Visit www.irishouse.org for more information or

support, or SMS IRIS to 40131 to donate R20.

    swimming round and round in

its tronk getting fed what its

    given. The ocean where it

    should be is possibly 100

metres away. Then we can go

to Hout Bay to the World of

Birds and see all those animals

    in their tronke. They have

    Black eagles and others there

    permanent in draadhokke

who can see the blue sky and

    mountains close by but cannot

soar to hunt and catch their

    own prey. Monkey World

    Somerset West, the lion park

and so we can go on, even to a

    well known nursery who keep

a few animals in a cooped up

    space. Perhaps for selfsugtige

    finansile genot as you say.

    However, many people can

    take their children and grand-

children to see the animals for

a day of fun. Go and see the

    smiles and happiness it brings

    to the children. Also, they

    create employment.

    I personally, and Im sure

    there are many others, would

    like to urge Maclarens circus

    and others Ive mentioned, to

keep up the good they do and

    the pleasure they bring to

many who are not able to go to

    the Kruger and Etosha Parks.

And on a sad note Zelda, we

humans are all living in our

    own tronke en draadhokke

    titled Flood of queries over

    water usage, TygerBurger, 15

April, I would like to inform

you that I am disputing a water

    bill of over R7000.

    I disagree with the statement

that a water meter cannot jump

    and an intermittent fault would

    be easy to identify.

If a foreign object in the

    water lodges in the counter

    mechanism, when it dislodges,

    the mechanism suddenly rotates

at high speed and can skip a

    gear tooth without leaving any

    evidence because the gear teeth

    are plastic and the foreign

    object washes away. Testing the

April. I had a similar problem

    and it was finally discovered

    that the geyser overflow pipe

    was pouring directly into a

    drain which was not easily

    visible. A plumber sorted out

    the geyser and solved the

    SLICE OF LIFE

    No top cop

    left we all

    share blame

What message are we sending our

children when the top cop in the prov-

ince faces suspension after charges of

    corruption are levelled at him?

    Western Cape police commissioner

Arno Lamoer and three senior officers

appeared in court and are facing suspec-

sion on 109 counts including corruption,

    money laundering and racketeering, with

    a Cape businessman.

These are officers who, filling the

highest policing position in the province,

should be beyond reproach to the

extent that a parking ticket could not be

    held to their names.

Yet daily we are faced with stories

about police officers flouting the law.

The very men and women who are

meant to protect us, are committing

    crimes and endangering others.

Where are the days when becoming a

police officer was an honour, a calling for

only the bravest and most trustworthy?

Perhaps it has seeped in from our

society, where breaking the law is so

widespread it has become the norm.

How often do we think nothing of

    jaywalking, driving after drinking or

keeping money found on the street?

We turn a blind eye to drug dealing

and gangsterism, quick to pull our

curtains closed or avert our faces.

We should not only hold our police

    officers accountable, reporting their

failures to uphold the law, but also our

    community members, friends and family.

The fight against corruption is the

responsibility of each and every one of

    us.

he effect of load shedding on house-

    hold electrical circuits cameunder the

    spotlight last week.

Electrical faults are often stated as the

cause of fires in houses and businesses, if

no other cause is known, said Wentzel van

    derMerwe, national claimsmanager of CIA

    in Johannesburg.

In the incident last Tuesday morning in

which the house of Dr Mariana de Jager in

Durbanville burnt down, it was speculated

that the power surge created when the elec-

tricity flow was restored after load shed-

    ding, caused an electrical fault.

An independent assessor for CIA, Mike

Hill of Mike Hill & Associates, was first on

the scene at the gutted house last Wednes-

    day morning.

He said there is a good change the electri-

cal surge after load shedding had affected

some electrical equipment. It may have

well been the geyser, hi-fi or television. It

looksas if the fire started furtheraway from

the spare room where Mariana slept, he

    said.

Van der Merwe said the outcome of the

forensic investigation is not yet known.

Fanus Coetzee, head of Santams claims

assessment services, said at Santam the

number of load shedding claims is not high

compared to the overall number of claims

    they receive in general.

They have received several claims rela-

ted to load shedding eight claims inFebru-

ary, 122 in March and 67 in April.

These claims were primarily related to

house contents, such as damage to electri-

cal appliances and the deterioration of ref-

    rigerator contents, he said.

We have received reports of power sur-

ges due to load shedding, but not a specific

case such as the abovementioned example

(in which a house burnt down).

In the instance where a fire is caused by

anelectrical fault due to load shedding, San-

tam will cover the insured under the house

owners for building and household con-

tents section of their personal policies, he

    said.

Coetzee advised people to try minimise

damage and loss during load shedding

    using the following tips:

. Alarm batteries: Most batteries will

last at least six hours, but they should be

tested regularly to ensure they are functio-

    ning properly;

. Electric fencing: An electric fence

should have a back-up battery, which needs

to be tested regularly and replaced if nee-

    ded;

. Arriving or leaving home: Home ow-

ners should be alert when arriving or lea-

ving homewhen street lighting and outside

    lighting is not functioning;

.Automated gates and garage doors: Ho-

me owners should ensure they have alter-

native ways to enter and exit their home if

electric security gates and garage doors are

    not functioning due to load shedding;

. Contact your security company: If con-

sumers feel unsafe at any time during a po-

wer failure, they should contact their secu-

    rity company emergency number.

oad shedding is a hot topic at

    the moment.

    Cape Towns mayco member

    for utility services, Ernest Sonnen-

berg, recently told Fin24 why some

    areas never experience load shed-

ding, while others appear to receive

    an inordinate amount.

As far as exclusions from load

shedding is concerned, the city is

    guided by regulation NRS048-9,

    Sonnenberg said.

    This deals with the appropriate

treatment of critical loads and the

    essential load requirements of vari-

    ous customers.

    Fin24 reports areas exempt from

load shedding, as identified by the

NRS048-9, are measured by a num-

    ber of criteria.

These include: the safety of peo-

    ple, the environment, the potential

damage to plants associated with a

    critical national product (for

    example wastewater treatment

    works), and technical constraints

on executing load shedding and cur-

    tailment or restoration.

Based on these criteria and whe-

re possible, the City excludes major

    hospitals, and major central busi-

    ness districts and areaswhere there

    aremajor crowdsgathered for speci-

    fic events, Sonnenberg said.

    Areas previously excluded are

the Table Mountain cable car, as

well as parts of the CBDs across the

    city, and major hospitals, Sonnen-

    berg said.

He said some residents and busi-

nesses may be excluded from load

shedding if their properties share a

    dedicated circuit with exclusion

    areas.

Eskom shed some light onwhy so-

me peoples lights do not come back

    Spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe

    told Fin24 that some municipalities

    used automated technology to ma-

nage the process, while others use

    manual switches.

If the technician is stuck in traf-

fic and needs to get to the switchbo-

ard, perhaps there might be a de-

lay, he said, using a hypothetical

    example.

    Sonnenberg said nuisance trip-

ping sometimes led to load shed-

ding lasting longer than it should as

    the restoration of power sometimes

    results in circuits tripping, which

often went unreported as it was as-

sumed the outage was due to load

    shedding, he told Fin24.

    LaunchLab, a business accelerator

    hub based at Stellenbosch Universi-

ty, is running its bi-annual Pitching

    Den for innovative entrepreneurs.

The contest is open to aspiring en-

trepreneurs and is a platform to

pitch business ideas and stand a

chance to win a share of the R50 000

    prize money.

    Participants enter their business

idea by recording an informal pitch

    on video.

    Although any business idea can

    be pitched, LaunchLab is putting

out a challenge for ideas in one or

more of their new focus areas: pay-

ments and big data, paid media, cle-

    an technology, agricultural techno-

    logy, and education technology.

    Participating campuses include

    Stellenbosch University (SU), the

    University of the Western Cape

(UWC) and the University of Cape

    Town (UCT).

    LaunchLabs Pitching Den is a

    great platform for aspiring and

    emerging entrepreneurs to test the

viability of their business ideas and

gain access to a valuable entrepre-

    neurial network, said LaunchLab

    CEO Philip Marais.

    Winning ideas will receive seed

    funding and incubation support ser-

    vices like mentorship and space.

The Pitching Den at SU, UWC and

UCT is an effort to promote entre-

    preneurship among their students.

Pitching began at UWC and UCT

on 14 to 16 April and at SU on 21 to

    23 April.

The final judging will be hosted at

    the Nedbank LaunchLab in Stellen-

bosch on 6 May and experienced en-

    trepreneurs, academics and local in-

    vestor representatives have been se-

lected as judges to determine the

    winning ideas.

The public is invited to attend the

final pitching event on 6 May.

jaag net soos ekmy eie dromemoes najaag,

het die stigter, Michelle Louw, by die be-

    kendstelling van die veldtog ges.

    Die deftige geleentheid het Donderdag-

    aand by Neethlingshof-wynlandgoed buite

    Stellenbosch plaasgevind.

Michelle was vir vyf jaar in n verhouding

kundig afgekraak.

    Terwyl diemishandeling voortgegaanhet,

het Michelle groot baadjies gedra om haar

merke te verbloem, terwyl haar mishande-

laar haar van die wreld gesoleer het.

Hy het my in die huis toegesluit, my By-

bel in stukkies geskeur en my familie een-

kant toe geskuif.

gegooi en n kussing is oor my kop gedruk.

keer.

wys. Hy was ernstig.

gesig vanwoede vertrek was. Ek het gesien

    hoe sterf ek daardie aand.

hondjie waarvoor ek baie lief was, gemartel

nesing begin. Nadat sy 14 jaar terug in die

Kaap was, moes sy mond- en kaakchirurgie

ondergaan omhaar gesig te rekonstrueer na

    die tallose aanvalle op haar.

Met jare se pastorale berading, die onder-

steuning van haar nuwe eggenoot en haar

onwrikbare geloof, het Michelle weer haar

    pad gevind.

Super Mama is n sa-
