The N7 between Richwood and Dunoonclaimed another victim over the wee-kend when a man was struck by a ve-

hicle while crossing the road.The road has become a hotspot for fatali-

ties as people cross it to get to work in theearly hours of the morning, sometimes invery misty conditions. TygerBurger re-cently reported that the provincial govern-

ment is planning a footbridge over the N7in order to curb the accidents (“N7 Foot-bridge mooted”, 1 July).

The footbridge will, however, be too latefor the 33-year-old security guard who diedon Friday night.

According to Bothasig police spokesper-son Warrant Officer Jacques Mostert, theman was dropped off by his colleague atabout 19:30.

“When he tried to cross the road, he washit by a white Toyota Hilux bakkie trave-

ling in the direction of Goodwood. He diedon the scene.

“A case of culpable homicide has beenopened,” said Mostert.

He urged road users to be extra vigilant,especially before dawn and after sunset.

“Because of the bushes next to the road,it is difficult to spot a person suddenly cros-sing the road.

“During peak hours the problem is wor-se because people are in a hurry to get ho-me or to work and will cross the road indi-

scriminately.“While we wait for permanent action to

tackle the problem, it is important we takecare of our own and other people’s lives,”says Mostert.

Richwood Ratepayers’ Association chairDanny Bolton says many deaths could ha-ve been avoided if authorities had listenedto them years ago.

“We have been from pillar to post withthis case for years on end.

Officials have reported two fa-talities following a microlightaircraft crash on Wolwerivierfarm on Saturday.

City of Cape Town Fire andRescue Services officials madetheir way to Wolwerivier farmnear Melkbosstrand just after19:00 on Saturday.

According to a report fromCity of Cape Town Fire and Res-cue Services spokespersonTheo Layne, thick vegetationprevented firefighters from ac-cessing the area immediatelyand officials had to carry thenecessary equipment on foot.

On arrival, they found a manand a 15-year-old had died in thecrash. Shortly after 21:00, res-cue vehicles and paramedicscould be seen leaving the site.

“There was no fire and the in-cident has been handed over topolice,” he concluded.

Ná ’n vrou van Monte Vista in TygerBur-ger gelees het van ’n hengelprojek watdeur die Bothasig-polisie bedryf word,het sy en haar vriende saamgespan om ’ngroot hoeveelheid hengeltoerusting teskenk.

May Hannah sê sy het gelees van dieprojek, waarin die plaaslike polisie leer-ders op hengeluitstappies vergesel en diefynere kunsies van die sport leer en ge-dink dit is ’n goeie projek. “Ek was besigom my hengel-aktiwiteite af te skaal enhet na ’n projek gesoek waarvoor ek mytoerusting kon skenk. Die een van die po-lisie het uitgestaan as die ideale projek.

“Toe ek met sommige van my vriendepraat, het hulle ook hul motorhuise inge-

vaar en van hul goed geskenk,” sê Han-nah.

Sy het die Westelike Provinsie in hen-gel verteenwoordig en het ook al aan dienasionale proewe deelgeneem. Hannah sêsy is bly die toerusting kan nou die nuwegeslag hengelaars bevoordeel.

dan deur die goed wat hulle deur die loop van die dagbymekaargemaak het.

“Dit wat hulle nie kan verkoop nie, los hulle netdaar en dít is die grootste rede vir die gemors.

“Wanneer hulle daar is, gaan hul lewens ook netaan – hulle slaap en doen alles anders daar.

“Die Stad het groot uitgawes aangegaan om die plektoe te maak, maar wanneer haweloses binne ’n plekwil wees, sal hulle ’n plan maak om in te kom.

“Van der Westhuizen kan met graagte ’n brief skryfen vra dat die plek op ’n ad hoc-basis skoongemaakword.

“Ons waardeer sy insae as ’n bekommerde lid vandie gemeenskap, en hy weet hy kan enige tyd kontakmaak as daar ander probleme is,” sê Janse van Rens-burg.

gaan word nie.Die grond vorm deel van ’n suksesvollegrondeis en verlede jaar is die mense watdaar gewoon het, na Wolwerivier verskuif.Die eisers gaan die grond vir 99 jaar aan ’nontwikkelaar verhuur.Volgens Rudi Adams, verteenwoordigervan die eisers, gaan die eerste sooi eers-daags gespit word. “Dit was ’n lang en uit-mergelende pad wat ons tot hier gestap het.Daar was baie uitdagings en struikelblok-ke, maar ons het volhard.“Die hele proses het reeds in 1996 beginen verlede jaar het ons ons grond terugge-kry. Die grond gaan tot voordeel van die ei-sers ontwikkel word,” sê Adams.Sowat R16 miljoen is reeds onder die ei-sers verdeel. “Elkeen het reeds R40 000 ont-vang en gaan weer in Oktober R60 000 kry,”

sê hy.“Die hoofdoel van die ontwikkeling is omdie lewens van die eisers te verbeter. There are numerous awards for sustain-able building developments but surelyone of the most fulfilling is getting the

thumbs up – on a five-star plaque – from theGreen Building Council of South Africa

(GBCSA).This was what the Bridge Park office devel-

opment at Century City received from councilthis week. The 18 000 square metre develop-ment received the five-star Green Star SA Of-

fice v1 Design rating.Developed at a cost of R450m, Bridge

Park is a joint venture betweenGrowthpoint Properties and the RabieProperty Group.

GBCSA chief executive Brian Wilkinsonsaid achieving a five-star rating demon-strated going above and beyond greenbuilding requirements.

“It shows a commitment to people andthe planet and the GBCSA commends Rab-ie and Growthpoint on their achieve-ments.”

Wilkinson said the South African prop-erty sector was becoming a “growing forcefor good” in the country, not only for theenvironment, but also for people and busi-ness.

Rabie director Colin Anderson said theywere delighted with the rating they re-ceived in the design category and were

now aggressively pursuing another fivestars for Bridge Park in the “As Built” cate-gory.

The development consists of two four-sto-rey buildings – the 9 900 squaremetreBridgePark East, and the 8 100 square metre BridgePark West – which have a shared basementand podium.

The development was completed in Julyand final touches were now being undertak-en.

Anderson said there was strong corporateinterest in Bridge Park and they expected tobe fully let in the near future.

Bridge Park was designed by DHK Archi-tects and constructed by Murray & Roberts.Sustainable building consultants were PJCarew Consulting.

Bridge Park falls within an all-green pre-cinct, which includes the R1bn Century CitySquare development.

A course on value-driven parenthood inwhich teachers and social workers earnpoints will be presented in Durbanville.

The Value Driven Parenthood courseis being run by Badisa Trio - a non-profitchild protection organisation - the West-ern Cape Education Department and Ev-ergreen Parenting.

The course will be presented on 19 Au-gust, 14 October, and 17 February nextyear.

Maya is ’n 12-jarige hondjie wat so op-gewonde geraak het toe sy ’n manmet sy hond in die pad sien loop het,

dat dié hond se eienaar haar oog verminkhet.Dié gru-verhaal van dieremishandelinghet homself Maandag in ’n pad in Welgele-gen afgespeel toe Maya by hul woning seswaar houthek uitgeglip het, onder die toe-sig uit van haar eienaar, Rista Jansen.“Ek het van die werk gekom. Die erf hethoë mure met groot houthekke. Die windhet verskriklik gewaai en ek het gesukkelom die hekke oop te maak,” vertel Rista.“Daar het ’n man met sy skaaphond aan’n leiband in die pad geloop. Die man het ef-fens agter die hond geloop. Toe hol Mayasoontoe. Sy het geblaf en vorentoe en terug-gehardloop. Die man het haar ‘weggewaai’met sy loopstok – of dalk was dit ’n kierie– terwyl ek nog met die hek gesukkel het.Dit alles het binne sekondes gebeur. Toesien ek hoe slaan hy haar.”Rista sê Maya, ’n miniatuur-pincher, hetin die pad gelê en “krioel van die pyn”. Ristase motor-enjin het nog geluier in die pad –sy het nog nie eens kans gehad om dit in tetrek nie, sê sy, so vinnig het alles gebeur.“My hond weeg nieeens 3 kg nie. Die manhet eenvoudig aange-loop. Toe sê hy: ‘Keep yo-ur dog on a leash!’ enloop verder.”Rista het Maya dade-lik na die Panorama-die-rekliniek geneem, waarsy in die hoësorgeenheidgeplaas is. Capetonians are invited to fight hunger inhour schools by participating in the Penin-sula School Feeding Association’s (PSFA)47th annual Blisters for Bread Charity Fa-mily Fun event.The popular walk will take place at theGreen Point Cricket Club on Sunday 23 Au-gust.This event was established in 1968 withthe aim of raising money to feed hungryschool children. It has since become one ofthe major highlights on the Cape Town ca-lendar.It will start at the Cape Town stadiumwith the route looping along the promenadeandending in theusual fun, foodand festivi-ties at the Green Point Cricket Club.Themandate of PSFA’s Blisters for Breadthis year is not only to mobilise people towalk or pledge donations towards feedinghungry school children, but also to raiseawareness about the overall benefits ofschool feeding programmes.Research shows the provision of food atschool increases food security by providingmuch neededmeals and reducing the finan-cial strain on families.School feeding increases the nutritionalstatus of young children and helps improvetheir educational profile – thismeans incre-ased school attendance, cognitive abilityand concentration, which translates intoimproved academic achievement.It is shown to decrease drop-out rates, acommon problem in South Africa.The child is also less likely to suffer fromillness related to malnutrition. This easespressure off the health system and taxpay-

ers.It also brings about gender equality, asstudies show that in certain cases, girls ha-ve to help with household chores and neces-sary care work. a Hawks official, was stabbed to deathnext to the N2 while changing a flat tyre.He stopped after his vehicle hit obstaclesplaced in the road by the culprits to forceunsuspecting victims to pull over. Arrestsfollowed two days later.We constantly hear about attacks and

stone throwing at certain hot spots onthe N2 and the R300, but we almost neverhear of anyone being arrested for thecrime. Upon investigation, it turns outmany of these incidents, much like manyother crimes, were never reported.The police cannot act when they don’t

know a crime has been committed. Theycan’t arrest anyone on hearsay, and theycan’t investigate a crime they heard ofthrough the grapevine. Yet they are firstin line when the public starts handingout blame because nothing was done.The problem is there is still a percepti-

on among many that reporting a crimewon’t bear any fruit – just another docketto add to the unsolved pile.In too many communities people live in

fear of criminals, so they rather keepmum on what they have seen. As long aswe remain quiet, criminals have theupper hand and will continue to terroriseour communities. The local band, which originallyformed in the early ’70s was a well-known name in Cape Town coverline-ups before disbanding a fewyears ago.The music kept calling though, so

earlier this year members Oros Ko-tze and Johan de la Querra decidedit was time to get back on stage.At first theydecided toput theorig-

inal line-up back together, but in theend only keyboardist Bobby Forbeswas able to come on board.With the blessing of the rest of the

oldmembers, Bad Apple reformed asBad Apple Revival with the additionof bassistMariusDoubell and guitar-ist Richard Black.This new version has already

played to sold-out venues in thenorthern suburbs and has been

booked to play all over the WesternCape later this year.“We’re on our way,” Johan says,

AANSOEK OM TOELAEBEFONDSING VIR2015/16: MAATSKAPLIKE ONTWIKKELINGEN VROEËKINDONTWIKKELINGDie Stad Kaapstad se direktoraat maatskaplike ontwikkeling en vroeëkindontwikkeling(SDECD) nooi geregistreerde gemeenskapsorganisasies en organisasies sonder winsbejagom aansoek te doen om befondsing vir ontwikkelingsprojekte. Die aansoekers sekernbesigheid moet in pas wees met die SDECD se mandjie dienste hieronder. Hierdieversoek is in pas met die strategiese fokus in die Stad se geïntegreerde ontwikkelingsplanwat gerig is op die bou van ‘n omgee- en inklusiewe stad, en is verder daarop gemik om diedoelwitte van die Stad se strategie vir maatskaplike ontwikkeling te bevorder.

Doen op die amptelike aansoekvorm aansoek, tesame met die volgende gesertifiseerdestawende dokumente:

• ’n Afskrif van die jongste, geouditeerde finansiële state of ouditsertifikaat indien daar invorige boekjare toelaebefondsing van die Stad ontvang is. Die bedrag van die toelaeontvang moet aangedui word. Indien die bedrag minder as R25 000 was, is slegs ‘n afskrifvan die finale bestedingsverslag ten opsigte van die vorige toelae nodig.

• ’n Afskrif van die organisasie se grondwet.• ’n Afskrif van die organisasie se registrasiesertifikaat.• ’n Afskrif van die organisasie se jongste munisipale eiendomsbelasting-en-

diensterekening (indien van toepassing).• ’n Nulkoers-BTW-rekening indien die aansoeker ’n BTW-verskaffer is.• Die oorspronklike en jongste onvervalde SAID-belastingklaringsertifikaat Aansoeke sonder

‘n geldige belastingklaringsertifikaat sal nie aanvaar word nie.• Besonderhede van ander finansiering wat vir die huidige boekjaar van die Stad ontvang word.• Breedvoerige beskrywing van die projek wat met die finansiering en volgens die doel

van die toelae geïmplementeer sal word. Projekte moet in pas wees met die SDECD semandjie dienste, wat insluit:• Jeugontwikkeling (lewensvaardighede, entrepreneurs- en

werkgereedheidsvaardighede en organisatoriese vaardighede)• Bewustheids- en voorkomende intervensies vir middelmisbruik• Intervensies vir armoedeverligting• Programme vir die hantering van kwesbare groepe se behoeftes, in die besonder

bejaardes, vroue en kinders. Een van die direktoraat se kernfokusse is intervensies vir ‘ngesonde leefstyl vir bejaardes

• Programme ter ondersteuning van die direktoraat se doelwit om die getal mense watop straat leef, te verminder

• Programme ter ondersteuning van vroeëkindonderrig en -ontwikkeling• Programme met die doelwit om gemeenskapskohesie en -integrasie te kweek

• Gedetailleerde ontleding van projekkoste. ’n Minimum toekenning van R100 000 perprojekkoste sal oorweeg word.

• Die sakeplan wat saam met die toelae-aansoek ingedien word, moet ’n begin- eneinddatum vir die projek bevat.

• Eiendom wat vir die projek gebruik word, moet aan die Raad se beleide en verordeningevoldoen.

• Indien hierdie eiendom gehuur word, moet die huurkontrak as stawende dokumentasieingedien word.

Mieke Burger (13) van die HoërskoolDurbanville het vanjaar haar WP-kleure in biathle, triathle, vyfkamp

(“pentathlon”) en WP-Federasie-halwe-kleure in swem verower – sy is ook die WP,Boland en Wes-Kaap se kampioen in vyf-kamp vir 2015, en die afgelope twee jaarreeds die WP en Boland se vyfkamp-kampi-oen in haar ouderdomsgroep. Mieke is metdié puik prestasties gekies as dieTygerBur-ger se sportster van die maand.

Mieke het sedert 2012 elke jaar haar WP-Federasie-halwe-kleure vir swem ontvang.In biathle het sy in 2013 en 2015 haar provin-siale kleure ontvang, asook die afgelopetwee jaar in vyfkamp.

Triathle is vir die eerste keer in 2015 aan-gebied en hier het sy met die intrapslag ookhaar provinsiale kleure gekry.

Verder het sy die afgelope twee jaar ty-dens die nasiona-le SA vyfkamp-kampioenskaptwee bronsmedal-jes verower.

In 2015 het sygoud verower inbiathle bydieWP-kampioenskap ensilwer by die Wes-Kaap-kampioen-skap. In triathlehet sy vanjaar on-derskeidelik sil-wer en goud ge-wen tydens dieWP- en Wes-Kaap-kampioenskap.

Mieke het ty-dens die gekombi-neerde nasionaleSA biathle- en tri-athle-kampioen-skap in Oos-Lon-don in die afgelo-pe Junie-skoolvakansie ’n

16de plek uit 23 deelnemers behaal in biath-le, en ’n plek in die SA triathle-span latervanjaar in September na Batumi in Georgiënet-net misgeloop met ’n vyfde plek in haarouderdomsgroep.

Tydens die onlangse Metro-Noordsone-hoërskoolstreek-landloopkampioenskap op6 Augustus het sy gekwalifiseer vir deelna-me aan die WP se skole-landloopkampioen-skap, wat op 15 Augustus plaasvind.

Mieke ontvang ’n sonbril van haar keuseby Bosman, McNulty en Du Toit-oogkundi-ges in Durbanville. Shihan Hennie Bosmanvan die Welgemoed Kyokushin-kan-dojogee vir haar ’n R1 000, en dr. Costa Kapniasvan Ready Room gee vir haar ’n paar gratissessies wat sal verseker dat sy tot die bestevan haar vermoë kan presteer.

Kuilsrivier is feitlik verseker van die titelin die B-afdeling van die WP se Super-rug-byliga ná sy wegholsege van 67-7 die afgelo-pe naweek oor Raithby Universals.
