Die bekende Kaapse radio-persoon-likheid en sanger, Allistair Izobel, kon niedie begrafnis bywoon nie, maar het ’n videogestuur wat tydens die diens gespeel is.Daarin sing hy Michael Jackson se lied “Go-ne too Soon”. Devanish en sy vrou, Victoria,het ook saam met hul gospel-groep, Prophe-tic Joy, sangitems gelewer.

“My seun was die slimste in die wêreld,”het Devanish in sy huldeblyk gesê.

“Dit het nog nie tot by my deurgedring dathy regtig weg is nie, maar hy sal altyd in myhart wees.”

Victoria het Liam as ’n klein engel be-

The penguin stood forlornly in the shal-low surf staring at the water washingrhythmically over his feet.

“So this is it,” he thought to himself.His short lifewould come toanendon this

beach.He turned around, barely able to keep his

balance, and looked at Robben Island dip-ping below the waves on the horizon.

His parents left him to fend forhimself tooearly...

Behind him people started gathering innumbers, perhaps to join in the funeralmarch of a penguin.

For a moment his heart beat faster andthe urge to flee gripped him.

He of course didn’t know he was standingon the shore of Melkbosstrand and that so-meone would soon rescue him.

Regardless, he is a penguin, and duringthebrief periodhis parents lookedafterhimthey explicitly told him to be wary of hu-mans.

The fledgling, who has been christenedHappy Feet by one of the onlookers and lo-cal community police forum chairmanJohn Taylor, was just hours away from dy-ing of starvation.

Happy Feet will one day tell his childrenabout the time when Melkbosstrand Priva-te School’s teacher, Liezl Bestbier, lovinglytook him to Table View’s Southern AfricanFoundation for the Conservation of CoastalBirds (Sanccob).

Darkest momentBut late on Saturday afternoon, he was

scared.About 10 peoplewere looking at him trap-

ped between the beach and the wide ocean.And then, during his darkest moment, he

saw someone jogging towards the group ofuncertain onlookers.

The self-assured woman, who would tem-porarily become like a mother to HappyFeet, talked briefly to the onlookers andthen slowly moved towards Happy Feet.

She had a welcoming look in her eyes.Bestbier held out her hand, picked up

Happy Feet and tenderly wrapped him ina towel.

Days later Bestbier toldTygerBurger shehas rescued birds before, but never a pen-guin.

“I knew that if the penguin just standsthere and just looks at you then there is nofight left in them,” says Bestbier.

“The people there said they phoned Sanc-cob, but there was doubt whether the orga-

nisation could come and collect the pen-guin, so I decided to take him there myself.”

Peeking at the busy world through the to-wel, Happy Feet saw others staring curious-ly as he was placed in a box.

The drive to Sanccob was quite awkwardfor a bird notorious for awkwardness.

During the trip the penguin’s namemightjust as well have been Flappy Feet.

Once the two arrived in Table View hewas immediately taken in, weighed, andthoroughly embraced.

Global warming“He weighed just one kilogram, which is

much lighter than a bird his age shouldweigh,” says Bestbier.

“I was told by Sanccob that the chick sea-son and the parents’ moulting season areoverlappingnowbecause of globalwarmingand human interference. The adults fattenthemselves up, but then there’s nobody loo-king out for the chicks.”

Going to sea is then the most hazardoustime of a fledgling’s life and only about halfof them who go out for the first time everreturn home.

Sanccob’s development and marketingcoordinator, Francois Louw, says it is quitecommonduring chick season for them to co-me to the rescue of starving and dehydratedpenguins.

“The penguin was very undernourished,but he was very strong nonetheless. We sus-pect he was abandoned by his parents. Du-ring this three week process when the pa-rents replace their plumage with a brandnew set of waterproof feathers, they areunable to hunt for fish and feed their young.The chicks not yet ready to fledge are aban-doned and face starvation.”

Happy Feet will show the world he cansurvive. He will return to the sea, complete-ly reinvigorated by the caring Bestbier andSanccob.

One day he will have chicks of his ownand he will tell them of the wide world outthere and about his brush with death.

There are people who can be trusted, hewill tell them, and then when they are bigenough to feed themselves, he will leave.

Right now, he is sure he will keep an eyeon them from a distance.

Happy Feet’s chicks will never be comple-tely alone.

“Aweek fromnow, perhaps even a fewye-ars, Iwill think of the penguin I saved,” saysBestbier. “I hope I made a difference.”

A man from Ruyterwacht is taking it uponhimself to repair the Stan Abbot SportsComplex in Ruyterwacht.

The complex was recently vandalised re-cently after the City of Cape Town removedall security guards working at sport com-plexes in the city.

Since then, over four complexes have

mans wat gevang is ’n gevangene op paroolis. “Hierdie tipe voorvalle is nie geïsoleerdnie, want mense uit die gemeenskap pro-beer voortdurend om ongemagtigde itemsoor die muur te gooi. Met intensiewe seker-heidsmaatreëls het ons die situasie onderbeheer.” Volgens haar is hulle nog nie be-wus wie die ontvanger van die dagga souwees nie, maar daar is nou ’n ondersoek.

Inwoners wat naby die Goodwood-sport-kompleks woon, is keelvol vir die leeglêery,dronknes, dwelmmisbruik en algehele wet-teloosheid wat by dié kompleks heers.Roger Wiehahn, wat in Riebeekstraat

woon, sê haweloses wat by die sportkom-pleks uithang, hou hul huise dop.“Hulle het reeds amper almal se krane en

The third annual inter-disaster risk mana-gement volunteer unit first-aid competitiontook place recently and local units did notdisappoint.

This year the competition incorporatedfirefighting for the first time.

The participating units were from Atlan-tis, Athlone, Belhar, Fish Hoek, Milnerton(defending championswhohad two first-aidteams participating) and Plumstead.

The winning team for the firefightingcompetition was Atlantis, and in the first-aid was Milnerton A.

The fire teams comprised four people.Each had to perform a drill in a simulated

situation within a specified time period.The drill included setting up a hydrantpoint, running out three lengths of hose andhitting a target with the correct nozzle set-ting, rolling up all hoses and securing allitems used.

The first-aid team competition scenariowas three casualties injured in the “fire”.

The teams had to treat a severe bleedingwound, cardiac arrest, burns to the chest,arm and hand, and an open leg fracture.

The aim of the competition is to test theskills and preparedness of volunteers inany disaster situation, as part of their com-mitment to create a safe city.

anofficialWorldDesignCapital 2014projectin which people who took part in the pro-ject, collected an “ikomityi” – their own, iftheywere lucky enough to find it, or someo-ne else’s. The idea was that the project willconnect people by “shaking hands” with astranger when they hold someone else’s“ikomityi” made in the handprint of theother person.Ukusela eKapa, which means “Drink Ca-

peTown in”, is a joint venturebetweencera-mic artist Hennie Meyer from Durbanville,and architect Janine de Waal.The project raised design awareness du-

ring Cape Town World Design Capital 2014,connecting 10 000 people through design.Each participant created a unique drin-

king vessel by imprinting their hand on softclay and writing their first name and ageon the base.The mobility of the project enabled Uku-

sela eKapa to “squeeze” in each of the city’s24 subcouncils. Visitors to Cape Town fromaround SouthAfrica and from over 50 coun-tries took part in the project.The installation was built by renowned

land artist Strijdom van derMerwe. He toldTygerBurger at the official opening of theinstallation on Saturday evening that thesymbolic meaning of this specific designwas that the lines represent the connectionof communities by roads and streets.The “islands”, which were connected

with lines, represent towns and cities –each with the names of all the people thatlive in them, represented by the names atthe bottom of the “iikomityi”.The pentagonal design if the installation

is also based on the structure of the Castle,consisting of five corners, he said.He also made an installation last week on

Robben Island, prior to the one at theCastle.

A survey of street people conducted inshelters and on the streets of CapeTown showed significant numbers in

the northern suburbs.The first phase of the survey was recently

completed after 220 trained field workers forthe city’s Social Development and EarlyChildhood Development Directorate collec-ted data over a four-day period in June.A sample of 2670 street people over the age

of 18 was taken, a headcount done and ques-tionnaires completed by these respondents.The data established how long they had

beenon the streets, their communities of ori-gin, what they do to survive on the streets,andwhether ornot theyuse shelters and ser-vices within the city.The highest numbers of street peoplewere

counted in the Cape Town city bowl, but lar-ge numbers lived in the northern suburbs.The larger part of Durbanville, Vrede-

kloof, Protea Heights, Philadelphia, Klip-heuwel, Fisantekaal, Richwood, Bloekom-bos and a small portion ofWallacedenewerehome to 6% of respondents.At Goodwood, up to De La Rey Road, Pa-

row and Ravensmead, (as far as VanguardDrive), the number was at 7%.At Eerste River andMfuleni (as far as Ma-

cassar and the western part of SomersetWest), 17%of respondents slept on the steets.“We already have numerous interventi-

ons in place,” said Suzette Little, city maycomember for social development and earlychildhood Development.Little said the city’s data was outdated, so

they “decided to gain a better understandingover timeof howmanypeopleweare dealingwith and look to repurposing our interventi-ons if need be”.The survey foundwomenwouldmore like-

ly be found in shelters and men more likelyon the streets.A third of the respondents were between

26 and 35 years old.Of the 1593 who reported on the length of

time that they have been on the street, 17%had been homeless between one and five ye-ars, 15% for less than amonth to sixmonths,and 7% had been on the street 16 years ormore.Approximately 15% of respondents repor-

ted being on the street out of choice, withmost reporting lack of housing (26%), the

loss of family (18%), substance abuse (15%),and unemployment and poverty (15%) as re-asons for homelessness.The survey showed income on the streets

was predominately generated from begging(45%), temporary or contract employment(37%) and social grants (2%).Those in shelters had more access to tem-

porary employment (43%), social grants(29%) and fewer than 8% resorted to beg-ging.“This is only the beginning of the process

forus. I have to stress that this is not a defini-tive figure of the number of people living onthe street, but it is a start,” Little said.The next phase of the project is to compa-

ring the latest datawith findings fromprevi-ous surveys and establishing trends.

masters themselves, Brewery FreshCastle 1895 Draught Tank beer is pipeddirectly fromNewlandsBrewery’s tanksinto a dedicated “Fresh Beer Truck”,straight to 500L copper tanks and in toyour glass, all in a matter of hours afterit has been brewed.“Nearly all South African beer is pas-

teurised to afford it a longer shelf life,but during this process some of beer’s li-vely characteristics can be diminished,”said SAB trade brewer Denis da Silva.He said the pasteurisation process re-

The City of Cape Town’s festive season co-ordinating committee has drafted a plan toensure thehighest level of preparedness forthe busy holiday period.

The plan focus areas include emergencyresponse, policing, ensuring safety at pub-lic amenities such as beaches, road safety,cleansing, enforcement of by-laws, and sub-stance abuse.

The city will make the following servicesavailable over the festive season:

. 1 430 Metro police, law enforcementand traffic officers patrolling roads andbeaches and conducting operations

. 900 firefighters available for anymajorincidents

. 240 firefighters on shift at any giventime at the city’s 30 fire stations

. An additional 120 seasonal firefighters

. 250 lifeguards available on a rotationalbasis; on average there will be about 70 life-guards manning city beaches every day

. 1 864 temporary staff members to en-hance the cleansing services capacity

This year, Transport for Cape Town willpilot a plan for theAtlantic Seaboard on theDay of Goodwill (Friday 26 December) andNew Year’s Day (Thursday 1 January),which will see a dedicated team of 20 trafficofficers deployed to manage traffic flow onthe two major beach days.

The community services directorate willensure blue flag beaches are kept pristine,andwill prioritise the safety of beachgoers.The city has partnered with LifesavingWestern Province, who will deploy 250 life-guards in addition to their volunteer serv-ices at all popular beaches.

In order to deal with the increased de-mand on services during this period, thecity’s plan provides for top-up cleaningservices covering all business areas, scenicroutes, and beaches throughout the metro.A total of 1 864 temporary staff from the Ex-panded Public Works Programme (EPWP)will be deployed to various areas and willprovide the added capacity needed.

In a ground-breaking initiative, medicalstudents of Stellenbosch University cannowundergo part of their training at accre-dited Mediclinic hospitals.

This initiative was announced last Mon-day between Stellenbosch University (SU)and Mediclinic Southern Africa.

The programme was tested as a pilot pro-ject this year at Mediclinic Durbanville, inpartnership with the SU Faculty of Medici-ne and Health Sciences (FMHS).

Fourth and fifth year students completedtheir four-week internal medicine rotati-ons at the hospital, and received clinicaltraining from private sector doctors.

Based on the success of the pilot project,the FMHS and Mediclinic agreed to expandthe programme to three other hospitals inthe Mediclinic group.

They are Mediclinic Cape Gate, Medicli-nic Louis Leipoldt and Mediclinic Panora-ma.

The project was the initiative of Profes-sor Rafique Moosa, executive head of thedepartment of medicine of the FMHS, Pro-fessor Elvis Irusen, chairman of the under-graduate programme in general internalmedicine of the FMHS, and two specialistdoctors with practices at Mediclinic Dur-banville – Dr René Truter, a radiologist,and Dr Rust Theron, an internal medicinespecialist.

“The pilot project was very carefullyplanned and we are pleased it has been re-ceived so positively. We have to give creditto all the stakeholders for being so braveto go on this journey with us. I wouldhighlight two of the success factors as thewonderful support of Mediclinic Durban-ville and the specialists coming on board,”said Moosa.

“It is the first time such a programme forthe formal training of undergraduate stu-dents in the private sector has been succes-sfully implemented,” he said.

The specialists at Mediclinic Durbanvil-le received accreditation by the FMHS totrain students.All participating staff atten-ded a short course to ensure they are equip-ped to transfer the appropriate skills andknowledge to the students.

Health MEC Theuns Botha said it is theprovincial government’s objective to effectlegislative changes to enable the privatesector to become involved on a considera-ble scale in the training of doctors.

“Atpresent it is not possible, becauseme-dical training is public sector driven. It isnot reasonable to expect the private sectorto accept co-responsibility for health care,but prohibit them from participation intraining.

“The private sector is involved in thetraining of nursing staff, and I see no rea-son why this cannot be expanded to medi-cal doctors.The issueof the shortageof doc-tors in South Africa is well-known, as wellas is the dire need to improve public healthcare,” said Botha.

As Spud fans across the country pre-pare for the release of Spud 3: Learn-ing to Fly, at the end of the month,

Spud’s Rambo is enjoying being a big fishfor a while.Lansdowne’s Sven Ruygrok plays the

role of Rambo, a member of “the CrazyEight” in themovie franchise based on thebooks by South African author John vande Ruit, but says he was “not prepared atall” for the success of the films.Sven says that books and films are two

very different mediums.“A lot can gowrong in converting a book

to a film,” he says, adding: “We were alsoall young kids then, coming together toshoot our first ever feature film. The suc-cess of the film was not even a synapse inour minds.”Sven originally auditioned for the role

of Pike, the school bully andAlan “Boggo”Greenstein, anothermember of “theCrazyEight” before being chosen to play Robert‘Rambo’ Black.His involvement in the first film ignited

a passion for film and put him “on the act-ing map, so to speak”.He’s since been involved with film pro-

duction like City of Violencewhich was re-leased in October, where he co-starred op-

posite Orlando Bloomand Forrest Whitaker.He will also be seen in

the sci-fi movie Outpost37, set to be released nextyear and the Ellen DeGe-neres film, Sophia Graceand Rosie’s Royal Adven-ture.Theatre-lovers will

have seen Sven on theMaynardville open-airtheatre stage where heplayed Puck in their lastproduction of A Midsum-mers Nights Dream andhe performed in Alice inWonderland under the di-rection of Fred Abra-hamse earlier this year .While he has worked

lined up, Sven says he isn’t always busy.“Often people can glamorize this indus-

try. It’s not glamorous at all.”Instead, Sven says, the film industry is

filled with “unpredictability, instabilityand long dry patches”.Between films, he is involved inmotiva-

tional talks for childrenwith the JAGBul-ly-Proof foundation.Bullying is one of the subjects that

comes up in the Spud films, but on set,Svendescribes the cast as a big rowdy fam-

ily.“When we get together

you can imagine the she-nanigans,” but one of hismost memorable anec-dotes doesn’t even involvethe cast.Sven recalls that the

cast were staying in ahouse in Cape Townwhenfans caughtwind ofwherethey were. Two youngwomen were so keen tomeet the cast they threwtheir cellphone over thewall, as an excuse to ringthe doorbell.“Unfortunately, they

did not know that on theother side of the wall wasa pool…”

While he has many favourite Spudscenes, Sven says it’s the dorm scenesfrom the first film, some of the first theyoungactorshadever shot, and the climat-ic “night swim” that are top of his list.Once promotion for the new movie is

In January this year an ex-Ty-gerberger woke up one mor-ning and was blind in her righteye due to retina detachment.

The retina in MarindaHoltzhausen’s left eye was han-ging by a thread and by Juneshehadonly 30%blurredvisionleft in her remaining eye.

The eye surgeon gave her un-til December until total loss ofsight due toProliferateDiabeticRetinopathy (PDR).

Holtzhausen, who matricula-ted at Tygerberg High School,but now resides in SomersetWest, needs to undergo an ope-ration known as a vitrectomy

on both eyes to save her sight.The cost of these operations areabout R60 000 each.

The third Bikers4BandanasMotorbike Ride was held at anew venue, Killarney Internati-onal Raceway, on Sunday andwas, as always, a huge success.

The MOTH Motorcycle Asso-ciation fund-raiser to grow theSouth African Bone MarrowRegistry is an annual event.

Motorbikers have the mostgenerous hearts and 1 140 ri-ders participated in the bikeevent, arriving on all makes, si-zes and types of motorbikes.

The MC for the day was well-known surf-reporter DeonBing, and live music providedby “Off the Record” and “ Bour-bon Street” entertained thecrowd.

Various stalls displayed theirlatest biking merchandise, whi-le food and beverage stalls wereavailable to the many bikersand their families.

One stall provided an oppor-tunity to have hair shaved ordyed to show solidarity for leu-kaemia patients who often losetheir hair as a result of the tre-atment they receive.

All funds raised will be usedto pay for new donors to join theSouth African Bone MarrowRegistry and build a registry re-presentative of all ethnic racesto help save the lives of patientsdiagnosed with leukaemia andother life-threatening blood dis-orders.

film, Matthew is busy working on a followup to his record-breaking debut release.He became the first South African to en-

ter the iTunes album chart at number one,with The Home We Built last year.Between shows, he’s focusingonwriting

for the new album, which he hopes torecord early next year, but Matthew sayshe feels like people are putting a little bitof pressure onhim, after the success ofTheHome We Built.

“I’m just trying to focus on the secondalbumwithout trying too hard.” He’s onceagain teamed up with Matthew Fink, theproducer behind the first album and sayshe’s looking forward to hearing his ideas.“All the stuff he comes up with is amaz-
