The safety hub – a pilot project of the City of Cape Town and other role players – will be based at the Hillcrest Clinic, said ward 17 councillor Wilma Brady. The hub will be made available to neigh- bourhood watch groups from across Eerste River and used as a base where they will be able to operate from, as well as report emer- gencies, Brady said recently. The neighbourhood watches will also have the assistance of the city’s metro police and law enforcement. Brady said the initiative is the result of a partnership between herself, neighbour- hood watches, the city and the CPF. “This hub initiative began three years ago with the Tuscany Glen neighbourhood watch where we interacted with other neigh- bourhood watch groups to see how we could alleviate our problems,” said Brady. She said crime has increased in the area over the years and as a result the decision was taken to establish the hub. “The aim of the satellite station is to de- crease crime,” she told a group of concerned residents last week. Most residents in attendance complained about the unsafe vacant plots, bushes and de- fective street lights. Crimes plaguing the area, Brady said, in- clude learners being robbed of their person- al belongings on a regular basis, learners be- ing forced to sell drugs at schools, and young girls being sexually harassed. Housebreaking have also become the or- der of the day, and residents are being hi- jacked in their drive-ways. A new crime trend is also emerging, she warned. “Someone knocks on your door, and when you open the door, you are robbed at gun- point.” Drug dealers utilising play parks is anoth- er reason the safety hub is being established. It is still unclear when its doors will open, but it is set to operate from early 2015. “The outstanding work that our neigh- bourhood watches do at their own risk is greatly appreciated and as a community we really appreciate what they do, but we have realised they cannot do it alone. “I understand the police cannot be every- where and it is for this reason the project is of vital importance, to keep our community safe.” A total of R40 000 from the ward allocation fund has been allocated to the project. This will assist with training and equipment. A similar hub has already been estab- lished in Fish Hoek. Cape Town is getting ready for a groovethatwill set the tone for a fantastic fes-tive season.

On Saturday 6 December the beat will betaking place with a musical extravaganza, featuring the cream of Cape Town artists onone grand stage.

Headline Entertainment in associationwith Heart 104.9FM, People’s Post and Ty-gerBurger, will host the Hot SummerGroove concert at the GrandWest Arenaand it should not be missed.

Taking to the stage are some artists need-ing no introduction to local music lovers, some of themhaving started in the businessas children.

Many moons ago in Mitchell’s Plain thefather of Emo and Loukmaan Adams start-ed the Kinners Vannie Ses project (it is stillgoing strong) and the tiny talents that werefeatured in this show included RamaineBarreiro and Alistair Izobell.

The rest, as they say, is history, withEmo,Loukmaan and Alistair eventually gettinginvolved with the Kramer/Petersen pro-ductions. All of them played the role of Bro-ertjie in District Six – The Musical at onestage.

They were also part of the phenomenalKat and theKings that toured international-ly and won a Laurence Olivier Award.

Heady daysAlistair smiles when he recalls those

heady dayswhen theywere performing andtouring with the best on the local entertain-ment scene.

“TheRockets andAlEtto playedabigpartin taking our talent to another level, eventhough we were so young,” he said.

“Loukman and myself were part of a tourto Japan as part of Ricardo and Friends. When we got back we were joined by Emoand Ramaine and we were encouraged toform the group Nu Fancy.

“This was about 1990, and we first record-ed with the Rockets and then on our own.Remember that the recording studio wasnext to Club Fame in Elsies River.”

“I think after a few years we realised thisis what we were destined to do with our

lives,” says Alistair, “all of us had music inour backgrounds,” he said.

“The Adams’s always had some peoplepractising there for theminstrels or theMa-lay Choirs. They participated in those com-petitions from a young age.

Destiny“At Ramaine’s place the whole family

loved music, she was always singing tothem. And inmine therewere somany fami-ly members who played music but I am theone that took to it professionally.”

The international connections and acco-lades also came early for some of this crew,as Alistair explains.

“When we were 12-year-olds, Loukmanand myself worked with Stevie Wonder, BJThomas, Jonathan Butler and variousgroups like Atlantic Star and Imagination,so we were just motivated to keep going.

“Then came the Kramer/Petersen yearsand the experience is something that stayswith you forever. This experience also gaveus the confidence to find our individualpaths in our music and we all have workedhard to make a success in our careers.”

He laughs at the thought that Hot Sum-mer Groove is a “reunion” concert. “Noman, we’re all a bit different musically andeach of us has grown into a talent that canstand on its own. But we’ve always re-mained friends, we’ve been there for eachother andperformed in eachothers’ produc-tions over the years,” he explains.

The concert will also be featuring Sama-nominated female vocal group Blackbyrd.

The Take Note band will be on stage toback these talented artists.

If you buy a ticket to this show you standa chance of winning a brand new car – thelatest FAWV2 1.3. All tickets go into a luckydraw and the winner will drive away intheir new car. R5 of each ticket will be do-nated to the TraumaCentre in Zonnebloem.V Booking is open at Computicket for the showwhich starts at 19:30.

Selfs by die begrotings-rede.”

Hy is ookdeurdiedepartementvankorrektiewedien-ste hulp beloof.

People occupying council owned propertiesand sub-letting them, have this week beendescribed as a big issue in sub-council 21.

Speaking on Wednesday during a sub-councilmeeting,ward 108 councillorThem-ba Honono, said it’s a sensitive issue.

Councillors were discussing the draft al-location policy for housing opportunitiesreport when Honono raised his concern. The report seeks to obtain comments fromsubcouncils on housing allocation policy.

Honono suggested the municipality em-bark on proper training to educate peopleabout their rights.

“The law is clear – no owner can subletif the property is not in his or her name.

“Some people are doing it, however, andit needs to be addressed.”

He said property owners who reside inhostels and flats in Mfuleni rent out theirhomes and are illegally benefiting.

“This is a big issue in my area,” he said.Another issue is “so-called non quali-

fiers. Those people who are not even SouthAfricans but who qualify for a house whenSouth Africans do not have homes.

“The policy does not address this,” Hono-no added.

Ward 21 councillor Bert van Dalen saidhe is fighting a similar battle in Happy Val-ley.

“People come to Cape Town, they have ahouse somewhere else, they apply for a se-cond house and they end up getting it. Allour backyard dwellers in Cape Town areimpacted by this,” he said.

Wilma Brady, ward 17 councillor, saidanother issue the council faces is the trans-fer of council-owned property ionto the na-mes of the occupant after a few years. “Of-ten people pass away without ever havingowned a house,” she said.

Chair of the council, Steven Vuba, said acommittee should be formed to address allof these issues and a meeting should be setup with a representative from the depart-ment of human settlements.

The closing date for comments on the re-port is Wednesday 3 December.

Why should residents travel far to enjoy fi-reworks, was a question raised at the sub-council meeting by ward 17 councillor, Wil-ma Brady last week.Brady recommended public spaces closer

to home be considered when celebratingGuy Fawkes, Diwali and New Years Eve.Brady made the suggestion last week whenthe review of current recommended sitesfor discharge of fireworks were discussed. It is recommended that the current appro-

ved eight sites be reviewed by subcouncilsand alternative sites proposed, after consul-tationwith their respectivewards. Fire andRescue will then inspect the proposed sitesto ensure hey comply with relevant legisla-tion, before approval can be granted.

Brady said residents in herward oftenha-ve to travel to Macassar to enjoy fireworks.“WhyMacassar, why not the Blue Downs

Sports Field?“Macassar is 20 kilometres away. I am on-

ly suggesting these activities be here too,”she said.ANC PR councillor Majidie Abrahams,

said it is not entirely clear how many siteseach sub-council is allowed to recommend.“The sites are often far and people cannot

travel there, that is why they dischargetheir fireworks in their areas,” Abrahamsadded. The current sites include theTheoMarais

Park in Milnerton, the Bishop Lavis, West-fleur and Swartklip Sports Fields, MaidensCove’s parking area, Athlone Stadium aswell as the parking areas at Sunrise andMa-cassar Beach.

Toe ek begin

kunsonderwyser by Jan Kriel.“Sy hetmy gehelp ommy liefde vir kunsge-

create an environment where qualityhealth and education is available to all.“We firmly believe that health care

Raadslede wou by hom weet hoe ver die

opknapping van die stelsel vorder.De Villiers het hulle meegedeel dat die

projek moontlik teen einde Februarie 2015afgehandel sal wees.

By Saterdag se begrafnis het sowat 250

Ideal for the market“We lookedat thedevices currently in the

market in South Africa and realised therewas amassive gap.The smartphones and ta-blets on offer were either prohibitively ex-pensive or cheap and badly specced. Wesketched outwhatwe thought the ideal spe-cificationswere for SouthAfrica, andusingthe purchasing power of Vodafone’s globaldevice team, we were able to have the devi-cemanufactured at a price point thatworksout at R2 per day,” Vodacom’s chief com-mercial officer, Phil Patel said. The Smart Tab 3G, which weighs in at

coverage everywhere we have 2G and beef-ing up our systems to handle the huge datagrowth we see in the cities and townships.Next, we’ve been working hard to make da-tamore affordable, and on average our dataprices is down 30% on last year, which isa big achievement given the increase onthings like electricity and fuelwhich are al-so our input costs,” said Patel.

Heavenly harmonies are taking a youngman from Delft to the top stages in SouthAfrica - and the world beckons.Nizaam Singh, 24, is proving that coming

from humble beginnings on the Cape Flatsshould not stop you from ever achievingyour potential in life and reaching for yourdreams. His love for music

has already seen himjoining greats likeJudy Boucher on stageand that journey justkeeps growing.Music was always

part of family life forhim, having started tosing when he was a 5-year-old.He smiles when he

recalls that MichaelJackson was alwaysplaying somewhere inthe background intheir home.“My brothers and I

would listen toMichael Jackson’ssongs while playing onmy father’s drums,” he says.“One of the first songs I lovedwasBen but

we just loved playing music and singingfrom very young.”Nizaam also plays guitar and piano be-

coming a huge fan of people like Andrea Bo-celli, Michael Buble, Brian McKnight andCeline Dion. While he admits he will always have a

love for the “pop” side of music his lifechanged when he was 12.“I was introduced to themusic of Luciano

Pavarotti and my life changed,” he says.

“The magic of his voice, the music I justfell in lovewith it andmore importantly dis-covered I have a natural talent for it.”While he started vocal training to hone

his skills nothing prepared him for gettingto grips with some of the Italian arias thathe had to sing.“I enjoyed the training but at first Italian

was very difficult, but if it is your passionyou must just knuckle down and work

hard.”Music is not his only pas-

cover their talent to be thebest that they can be. All ofus will not become singersbut we can also becomegreat soccer players, art-ists, actors, even plumb-

ers, bricklayers, teachers, doctors, nurses, the world is yours for the taking but youmust be prepared for the hard work that isin wait for you.“ We cannot all use our circumstances as

an excuse the talent is there just find it.“Young people must also start making

and apply the following precautionarymeas-ures:

V Do not get into water alone, not even ifyou are a strong swimmer.

V Children should never swim alone orcross running waters when it is unsafe.

Tips for staying safe in the water this summer

The National Institute for Crime Preventionand the Reintegration of Offenders (Nicro),Arrive Alive and South African Brewerieshave joined forces to reduce drunk drivingand keep SouthAfricans safe on the road thisfestive season with the Road Offence PanelProgramme.People arrested for road traffic offences,

will be able to accessNicro support and servi-ces via a 24-hour hotline (072 184 6483). As astart the hotline will only servicing the Wes-tern Cape. This campaign will run until the end of Ja-

nuary next year, aiming at heightening awa-reness of road safety and holding offendersaccountable for their behaviour. With police figures showing that some 195

people are arrested daily driving under the

influence (DUI), and that 71 065 arrests weremade in 2012, drunk driving is one of the gre-atest threats to road safety in the country. The Road Offences Panel Programme is ai-

med at tackling the challenge of drunkdriving through a behavioural programmeand has seen tangible results.Nicro believes the programme is amore ef-

fective long-term solution than sentencingsomeone to imprisonment for drunk driving,as prison is not necessarily the best optionfor all DUI offenders. However, it is up to the discretion of a ma-

gistrate to decide whether to impose thecourse as opposed to a jail sentence or a fine. The course canalso be imposed in combinati-on with other interventions, strengtheninglong term behavioural change.

Hundreds of people searched for their na-mes on the more than 11 000 “iikomityi”(drinking vessels) in an installation on thelawn of the Castle in Cape Town on Sunday. It was the culmination of Ukusela eKapa,

anofficialWorldDesignCapital 2014 projectin which people who took part in the pro-ject, collected an “ikomityi” – their own, ifthey were lucky enough to find it, or someo-ne else’s. The idea was that the project willconnect people by “shaking hands” with astranger when they hold someone else’s“ikomityi” made in the handprint of theother person.Ukusela eKapa, which means “Drink Ca-

peTown in”, is a joint venturebetweencera-mic artist Hennie Meyer from Durbanville, and architect Janine de Waal. The project raised design awareness du-

ring Cape Town World Design Capital 2014,connecting 10 000 people through design. Each participant created a unique drin-

king vessel by imprinting their hand on softclay and writing their first name and ageon the base. The mobility of the project enabled Uku-

sela eKapa to “squeeze” in each of the city’s24 subcouncils. Visitors to Cape Town fromaround SouthAfrica and from over 50 coun-tries took part in the project. The installation was built by renowned

land artist Strijdom van derMerwe. He toldTygerBurger at the official opening of theinstallation on Saturday evening that thesymbolic meaning of this specific designwas that the lines represent the connectionof communities by roads and streets. The “islands”, which were connected

with lines, represent towns and cities –each with the names of all the people thatlive in them, represented by the names atthe bottom of the “iikomityi”.The pentagonal design if the installation

is also based on the structure of the Castle, consisting of five corners, he said.He also made an installation last week on

Robben Island, prior to the one at theCastle.

The stories of women in Delft will be com-ing to life with the launch of a publicationon Saturday. The Institute for Healing of Memories(IHOM), Community Healing Programme,in partnership with Sakha Isizwe andYouth Art Development Co-operation(YARD) will be launching it within the 16Days of Activism Campaign because manyof the stories are of their triumph over ad-versity.Titled Building and Healing a Communi-ty - a Story from Delft this publication isa collection of biographical stories fromseveral women living in Delft. They are refreshingly positive stories oftriumphover adversity despite all thenega-tive publicity that continues to plague thecommunities of Delft. Most wonderful of allis to see this group of women/woundedhealers becoming role models and signs ofhope for Delft. Each of the women speak very openlyabout their lives in what often seemed likean emotional roller coaster. Of course aswell as too much pain, the women eachhave a great deal of resilience. The role played by Sakha Isizwe, theIHOM, YARD and others, in the upliftmentof theDelft community in general and thesewomen in particular is patently demon-strated in their narratives.Their stories clearly illustrate that heal-ing is not an end in itself. As people becomehealed they become freed to reach out incompassion to others and work for thetransformation of their communities. To read these stories is to be acutelyaware of the role of gender violence thatwomen suffer and endure at the hands ofmen. Also evident is the destructive powerof alcohol and drugs on individuals andcommunities. The guest speaker at the launch, whichwill be held at the Homecoming Centre inBuitenkant Street, Cape Town, is Ellen Pa-kkes, a person who can empathise withthese stories through her own experiencesof a family ravaged by drug abuse.

length of lessthan a month tosix months, and7% had been onthe street 16years or more.Approximate-

ly 15% of thesample reportedbeing on thestreet out ofchoice, withmost reportinglack of housing(26%), the loss offamily (18%),substance abuse(15%), andunem-

ployment and economic factors(15%) as reasons for their con-tinued stay on the street. The survey showed incomeon

the streets was predominatelygenerated from begging (45%),temporary or contract employ-ment (37%) and social grants(2%).Those in sheltershadmoreac-

cess to temporary employment(43%), social grants (29%) andfewer than 8% resorted to beg-ging on the street.“This is only the beginning of

the process for us. I have tostress that this is not a defini-tive figure of the number of peo-ple living on the street, but it isa start,” Little said. The next phase of the project

is to compare the latest datawith previous surveys and es-tablish trends that could furthershape the directorate’s streetpeople interventions, and the fi-nal phase of the project will beto establish a database.

Most children think of theirschool shoes as just a part of adreary uniform. They represent 12 years of

slog and for many the first signof freedom is to relegate them toa pile of discarded clothes im-mediately after writing that lastmatric exam. But imagine if youdidn’t have

shoes, especially during ourcold winters when you have tonegotiate puddles. In some families children

have to share the same pair ofshoes, with siblings takingturns to wear them. This is the reality for many

children from less fortunatebackgrounds. Their parentssimply don’t have themoney forschool shoes. So many of themgo to school barefoot. You can help. Simply leave

your school shoes at your deskafter you have written your lastexam for the year. Please ensure

you ask your parents’ permis-sion to do so. The shoes need tobe in usable condition. Tie theshoes together so the pairs arenot lost. People’s Post requeststhe shoes are boxed and readyfor collection in the new year.V Participating schools donatingshoes can contact People’s Post [email protected] with thewords “Walk Away” in the subjectfield.

Matrics to lose shoes

You can assist children who maynot have the means to buy theirown school shoes by donatingyour used shoes through thePeople’s Post Walk Away project.PHOTO: CARINA ROUX

An empowerment project in Delft got a ma-jor boost recently when they received a do-nation of sewing machines from South Afri-can Breweries.

Vision 2002 is a youth and women empow-erment project in Delft that is expandingand making a difference in the community.

They recently received a donation of sew-ingmachines fromSouthAfricanBreweriesto start manufacturing garments to raisefunds for their projects.

RowanDunne, corporate affairs specialistfor SAB, said the company was very im-pressed with what the organisation was do-ing andwanted to help them in thismanner.

“They are making a major difference inthe community and growing all the time,”he said.

“With this donation we hope that we willhelp them empower more people in this ar-ea.”

Ursula Joubert, explained that the organi-sation had grown from offering counsellingat school to expanding to skills development.

“Initially we started because schools inthe area needed help with problem chil-dren,” she said.

“From those counselling sessions we saw

the need to expand to lifeskills developmentfor the youth, and for women.

“It kept on growing as we partnered withthe FET College Boland where many of ourclients have gone for skills training in avari-ety of trades.

“Last year some of them started the sew-ing courses and that is why we are so happywith this donation so that they can use theseskills to empower themselves financially.”

Deon Britz, also from the organisation, pointed out that there were still many plansfor growing the organisation.

“It is important that we fight the risingpoverty and unemployment in the area,” hesaid.

“Eventually we want to build our owntraining andmulti-purpose centre so thatwecan help many more people closer to home.

“We are currently busy with an audit onunemployed youth in the area so that wehave figures toworkwithwhenweapproachpotential sponsors.

“With these figures and a databasewewillalso be able to see where we can accommo-date them in our training programmes.”

V For further information about the project or register with the organisation call Deon on 084 888 0597or visit their offices at 79 Eindhoven Road, Eindhoven,Delft.

An organisation in Delft is concerned atthe tragic loss of life in the area followingthe death of a toddler in a fire while play-ing in an abandoned car.

Fazlin Fransman of Afrika Tikkunpointed out that the tragic death (Toddlerdies in fire,TygerburgerWednesday 12No-vember) raisesmuchneededquestions re-garding the availability of structured andsafe play and learning areas for childrenin Delft.

“Most parents on the Cape Flats, worklong hours for minimum wage and areunable to afford proper pre-school or af-ter-school programs for their children,”she said.

“As a result, more than 50%of childrenin these communities are unsupervisedfrom the time their parents leave home, till they return in the evening.

“This is a worrying statistic due to thehigh rates of drug and alcohol abuseamongst teenagers within Delft. Thesenegative influences feed into the socio-economic conditions of the communityand cripple the youth, ensuring that theystay shackled in the cycle of poverty.”

She pointed out that at Afrika Tikkun, their primary aim is to ensure that chil-dren and youth in impoverished commu-

nities are holistically developed fromCradle to Career, to ensure that they be-come the next generation of productivecitizens.

“Through our extensive work in thecommunity of Delft, we realise the direneed formore structured programs to en-sure that children and youth are super-vised and gain much needed positive af-firmations tobeable todevelopholistical-ly.

“The death of the toddler is a symptomof a bigger problem within communitiesacross South Africa. To be able to ensurethat children are consistently in a safeand secure environment, we cannot sole-ly depend on the parents – who many atimes spend their entire livesworking fora minimum wage.

“In this instance the African Proverb,‘it takes a village to raise a child’ ringstrue.”

It is for this reason that Africa Tikkunhas launched the Early Childhood Devel-opment and Child and Youth Develop-ment programmes, to ensure that chil-dren in themost impoverished communi-ties across South Africa are in a safe andsecure environment while their parentsare at work.”
