Die onwaarskynlike vriendskap tussen’n Afrikaner en die apartheidsrege-ring se nommer een vyand, het die wê-

reld gaande.Christo Brand van Ruyterwacht was een

van oudpresident Nelson Mandela se tronk-bewaarders op Robbeneiland en by diePollsmoor-gevangenis. Hy het verlede jaar’n boek die lig laat sien oor sy vriendskapmet Mandela. Dié boek is in 16 lande en 10tale versprei en in sommige lande is ditreeds 4 keer herdruk. In sekere dele vanAmerika was die boek 4 weke lank die top-verkoper.Maar terwyl mense in onder meer Ameri-

ka, Engeland en Duitsland hulle verwonderaan die storie, bly Brand rustig in sy huisinRuyterwacht, regoor dieElsiesrivier-poli-siekantoor. “Ekverwylmyvryetyddeurmo-tors wat in ongelukke was, te restoureer endan te verkoop. Dit is vir my lekker om metmy hande te werk,” sê Brand, wat steeds opdie eiland werk. Hy bestuur die winkels.

VriendBrand sê Mandela was sy vriend.“Ons het mekaar gereeld gesien ná sy vry-

lating en hy het my gesin ontmoet. Hy hetselfs verwysings vir my oorlede seun ge-skryf toe hy werk soek.”Dan onthou Brand van die brief wat Man-

dela uit die tronk vir Brand se vrou gestuurhet. “Hy was bekommerd oor ek nie verderstudeer nie. Toe ek op die eiland kom, wasMandela reeds sestig, maar hy het vir almalomgegee. Die man wat weier om te trek van diegrond wat vir ’n ontwikkeling terwaarde van miljarde rande geoor-

Brian Verwey is deel van ’n groep van 401mense wat ’n suksesvolle eis vir ’n stukgrond naby Richwood ingedien het. Sy enander families is deur die apartheidsrege-ring van die grond afgesit en is na Atlantisverplaas. Hulle is nou die eienaars van diegrond, maar gaan dit vir 99 jaar aan ’n ont-wikkelaar verhuur, wat hulle lewenslankjaarliks vir dié voorreg gaan betaal.

Elke eiser is geregtig om aanvanklikR100 000 te ontvang, maar weens Verwey seweiering om te trek is die proses vertraag.

Nou gaan elke eiser teen die middel vanFebruarie hul geld kry, of Verwey nou blyof ry. “Hy hou nou nie meer die geld op nie,maar wel die ontwikkeling,” sê Gerald Be-ziek, ondervoorsitter van die komitee watdie eisers verteenwoordig.

Intussen het iemand wat ook in Rich-mondpark gewoon het, bevestig dat Verweyeiendom in Atlantis besit. “Hy en sy vrouhet ’n huis in Atlantis waarin die kinderswoon. Vir hom om daarop aan te dring om’n huis te kry, is onregverdig,” sê die bron,wat anoniem wil bly. Hy het ook bevestigdat Verwey reeds vir jare dagga verkoop enook al in die tronkwasweens dwelmhandel.

Die polisie in Bothasig, wat verantwoor-delik is vir die polisiëring van Richmond-park, het by navraag bevestig dat Verweyse naam twee keer in hul boeke verskyn.

“Die eerste aanklag is die besit vandwelms en met die ander was daar fout metsy perde,” sê ao. JacquesMostert. “Hy is eg-ter nooit vervolg nie.”

The City of Cape Town law enforcement ser-vices cracked down on drug trafficking andlawlessness on the roads in a number of ope-rations across the Metropole over the pastweekend.

Metro police officers arrested 85 suspects,including 65 drunk drivers, during road-blocks, operations and patrols in, amongstothers, Parow, Goodwood and Table View.

Motorists were arrested for drunk drivingand reckless and negligent driving.

Meanwhile, the City’s traffic service arre-sted 36 suspects and issued 1 169 fines for va-rious offences during its different operati-ons. Officers issued 415 fines for variousother offences.

TheMetro police gang and drug task teamhas also beenmaking inroads in theManen-berg area with various arrests for possessi-

on of drugs and illegal firearms, says JPSmith, the City’s mayco member for safetyand security.

“Most of the arrests and successes are asa result of tip-offs from the community anda good working relationship with the SouthAfrican Police Service. “We have stepped upour operational capacity in the Manenbergarea in recentweeks in response to a flare-upin gang violence and our efforts are payingoff, as is evident from these arrests. A pet spider who crossed at least threestreets and an open field, was foundunharmed by a Pinelands resident.

Ricardo Kock’s wife and children wereplaying around at his house in Disa Streetwhen his eight-year-old son Jordan saw thespider.“He had the fright of his life.When I came

around the corner I saw it as well and gothold of a piece of Tupperware and my fish-net. I reckoned the spider could be danger-ous, but I realised it was no ordinary oneso I caught it alive,” says Kock.He took the spider to the local animal

shelter, but also got hold of the owner.What surprised Kock was that the spider

walked so far. “I’m sure a person’s first in-stinct is to kill it, but I’m glad I didn’t. Itwould be interesting to know how far a spi-

der can walk,” wonders Kock.After he posted pictures of it on

Facebook someone recognised thespider as one belonging to a womanliving three streets away fromKock.He reckons the spider walked atleast a kilometer. “The owner of thespider says it has been missing foralmost two months.”Norman Larsen, an arachnolo-

gist, says the spider is a ChileanRose Tarantula. “It is a very harm-less spider, but illegal to own one.The distance it covered is not un-common. Spiderswill walk and rest.I hoped they gave himwater as soonas they found him because he wouldhave been dehydrated after beingexposed to the sun for that long,”says Larsen.Larsen educates people on spiders

every Saturday between 11:00 and12:00 at Cape Union Mart at CanalWalk.“I would like to educate people on

spiders and they can come look atmy ten tanks of spiders,” he says.TygerBurger tried to get hold of

required to report to thespecific police station on aregular two week basis.Should the dog appear

healthy, and the street personis “drug free” they will beassisted ( by vouchers) to stayat an official shelter withmeals, and receive coupons tobuy nutritious food for the dogfrom a volunteering pet shop .This gives the street people a

new purpose in life, not justfending for themselves fromdrugs and trash, but caring for“man’s best friend”.This is what I call “Humani-

With their brand new album and end-less supply of positivity, Glo Wors-hip Band is on a mission to sing the

truth.The group started out as a church band,

doing outreaches that just got bigger overtime. And as their ministry evolved, so didthe band and their goals. The band’s unusu-al name, which is pronounced as glow, wasthought up by band member Pierre Schoe-man’s wife.

“It’s got to do with light and that we arethe light of the world, which the scripturetells us.”

They’re not sure why they dropped the“w”, but it happened to make the name workwell in English and Afrikaans.

Glo launched their debut-album, Sons ofGod, at Jamrock Theatre in Brackenfell lastweekend.

In the heart“All of us kind of had it in our heart to

record an album somewhere along the line,”explains Roedie Nortier, but it was onlywhen their pastor suggested their materialwas good enough to record that they startedseriously considering it.

They experimented with recording atChurch, but in the end their album was pro-duced by Gideon Murray from Katalyst Stu-dios.

“One thing we have in common is thatwe’ve loved music since we were little,” Wil-liam Loedolff says of his band members.They’ve also asked the Lord to use them sin-ce they were young.

With this in mind, William points out thatwhile a lot of Gospel music is beautiful, Gloask: “Is it also beautiful to God?”

“Many songs that people write misunder-stand God’s love for people,” he says. He

says people sing about personal experien-ces, like being far from God, instead of whatthe Word says. “It’s not necessarily thetruth.”

This concept changed the band’s view onmusic, shifting their focus from melody tolyrics, which are written with the idea of lis-teners singing along.

Sing along“Having people sing along to a CD is much

easier than getting them to sing in church,”says Elmi Nortier. The album has giventhem a way to get people to sing positivethings about themselves in a fun way. “Theydon’t even realise it but they are puttingtheir lives in order by singing with us.”

The idea of singing the truth also led Gloto the realization there weren’t very many

songs they could use, so they had to writetheir own. This job mostly fell to William,who wrote most of the tracks on the album.

The music has elements of rock and folk,but unpretentious and simple, making theiruplifting lyrics easy to sing along to.

Rather than being known as just a band,Glo is a movement. Together with PastorLood Spies, the group run a ministry calledMach C. They want to help worshippers andsongwriters do what they do.

While the album is English, the band isalso busy sampling an Afrikaans single,Ditis Gedoen, to stations across the country.Sons of God is available through Nue-

The Goodwood Harriers Running Clubwhich joined forceswith theTygerbergAthletic Club back in 1985 is no more.

Faffa de Jager has decided it’s time for theHarriers to run solo again.The club officially opened its doors again

on 12 January.“The club was originally established in

1980 and now the Goodwood community feelthey want a running club and to revitalisethe Goodwood Harriers.“Way back then the Tygerberg Athletic

Clubwas just for track and field athletes andthe Goodwood Harriers was for long dis-tance runners, so they amalgamated to havethebest of bothworlds, because theHarriersin those days had some athletes that wantedto participate in both disciplines,” said De

Jager, who fills the role of club captain.Thewheels are also set intomotion to visit

the local high schools and promote road run-ning, because they are the future of the club.We will also be using the facilities of theGoodwood Sports Club where our memberscan have Sunday lunches in the comfort ofthe club and just have a good time andmakenew friends,” explained De Jager.The members will train at the Goodwood

Sports Club on Mondays, at the Virgin Ac-tive Value Centre in Goodwood on Wednes-days and at the church parking area inTownsend Street on Thursdays. Trainingstarts at 18:00.Saturdays will see a change of scenery as
