Unemployed members of thecommunity might see theirlearner and driver licensingtests paid for by the city if anew initiative is given the go-ahead.

The staggeringly low pass ratesin this regard, might however,sink the initiative.

The Bergdal Subcouncil wasthis month provided with anoverview of this project as pro-posed by the safety and securityportfolio committee of the City ofCape Town, and requested to con-sider making funding available

to assist the unemployed in theircommunities in this regard.

According to the report tabled,the provincial department ofcommunity safety currently hasa programme in place to providelearner licence training, but theydo not make provision for testingfees, resulting in many recipientsof this training not booking forthe test due to economic hard-ship.

This according to the city pro-vides an opportunity for sub-councils to assist.

The typical cost involved for a

learner’s licence would come toR140, which includes the applica-tion, issue and photos. For a driv-er’s licence it would cost R295. Intotal it would thus cost an appli-cant about R435 to obtain a driv-er’s licence, excluding drivinglessons.

Members of the subcouncil ap-peared to have conflicting viewsabout this proposal.

They felt that this initiative,however developmental, could bea waste of taxpayers’ funds if oneconsiders the dismal pass rate.

In Brackenfell only 87 appli-cants from 263 passed their driv-er’s licence tests in May. Of the447 applicants who wrote their

learner’s licence test, on-ly 292 passed.

In Durbanville, 61 outof 195 applicants passedtheir driver’s licencetests, while 345 from 562applicants passed theirdriver’s licence.

Calculated to rands andcents this adds up toR51 920 wasted revenuein terms of applicantswho failed their driver’slicences in Brackenfellduring May, and R21 700for those who failed theirlearner’s tests.

Subcouncil chairman GrantTwigg believes this proposalcould have a positive impact onthe community provided that thesubcouncil be involved in the exe-cution of the project.

“It’s a good idea, but before weconsider this proposal we firstwant to know to what extent wewill be involved in the project,and how we could monitor it,” hesaid.

The subcouncil resolved tohave the proposal investigated indepth before making a final deci-sion.

The shortage of traffic officers in the nort-hern district of the northern suburbs re-mains critical, with now only 10 officers onthe beat in the northern district, and onlyone more being recruited for the entire area.

Earlier this year TygerBurger reported onthis crisis after it was established that onlynine traffic officers served the entire areafrom Bellville South to Kraaifontein, whichincludes Brackenfell, Durbanville, BellvilleNorth and the entire Kraaifontein. Thisenormous area includes 18 schools and 17town areas. (See “Verkeerslui tekort grootkrisis – TygerBurger 7 March).

According toTygerBurger sources, this ni-

ne-man unit is divided into two shifts, com-prising about four or five per shift with anightshift of only two officers, at times, pro-viding nobody is sick or on leave.

The City of Cape Town later admitted tothis shortage and in April made R23 millionavailable to the safety and security portfolioto address this issue.

Committee chairperson Carin Brynardsaid that this money would enable the cityto train another 115 officers for the safetycluster of the city, which includes traffic, me-tro police, law enformcent, fire and rescueand disaster management. This week it was revealed to TygerBurger

that the northern suburbs a month ago recei-ved fivemore traffic officers – two for theMil-nerton district, two for the Goodwood dis-trict and one for the northern district. Thisaccording to our sources is a welcome relief,but not nearly enough to address the dilem-ma in the northern district.

In response to a media enquiry RichardBosman, executive director of safety and se-curity last week stated that 13 traffic officersare currently in traffic college and he is ex-pecting that an additional 12 will be appoin-ted throughout the city in the new financialyear. However, local businessman SchalkBurger, claims that the city lacks the neces-sary planning to tackle the problem head-on.

“Like with any successful business or or-ganisation one has to determine, by a speci-fic formula, the exact amount of manpowerneeded. Then based on that you should havean action plan with specified objectives andtarget dates,” he said.

He said he posed these questions to the ci-ty’s traffic department on many occasions –individually and via a civil forum, but hasnever received comprehensive answers.

“You can’t just continuously tell the publicthat there isn’t enough money, or that the ci-ty is doing its best with the funds available.We need the facts to reason this out,” he said.

City’s traffic officer shortage crisis continues

The average person in the City ofCape Town generates about 2kg ofwaste a day. A startling fact andsomething everyone needs tothink about.

A few years ago the City of CapeTown launched the WasteWise pro-gramme to educate communities inliving a “greener” lifestyle.

As a legendary “ambassador” forthis cause Zibi, the adorable mascotof yesteryear was resurrected for theprogramme.

Famous for his anti-littering mes-sage, Zibi along with WasteWise isnow approaching the third year backin the driving seat, with his age-oldmessage: “Zappit in a Zibi and keepCape Town beautiful!”

Last week Zibi was a guest of hon-our at the Wastewise Year Twoprogress meeting, which was held atthe Kraaifontein Integrated WasteManagement Facility, and as usualused this opportunity to spread hismessage with passion.

Originally the brainchild of ClaireMcKinnon and cartoonist Dov Fe-dler, Zibi was born in 1979 as part of

the then Keep SA Beautiful cam-paign. After this organisation dis-solved in the 90s, Zibi went into re-tirement only to be re-called againwith the approach of the SoccerWorld Cup tournament in 2010.

According to Wastewise spokes-person Hugh Tyrrell, McKinnon (theprevious head of Keep SA Beautiful),was the head of cleansing at the Cityof Cape Town at the time, andthought it the perfect time to bringZibi back.

The city purchased the rights to Zi-bi and his catchy slogan and soon hewas back to spread the message aspart of Wastewise’s education pro-gramme.

Wastewise is a public educationprogramme of the city’s Solid WasteManagement Department, whichaims to raise awareness and actionamong citizens to stop littering anddumping, to minimise waste and re-cycle.

started Nutty Knitters eight months ago andnow she has members who come from as faras Edgemead and Milnerton.

“Iwokeuponedayanddecided to take con-trol of my life,” she says.

By doing so she has changed the lives ofthousands of others.

“Our objective it is to knit for charitieswithin our environment, particularly thosewhere children or the elderly are concerned.At present we support the Little Lambs inDu Noon, the Durbanville Children’s Home,Tygerberg Hospital, the Smile Organisation,two old age homes in Woodstock, as well asneedy groups in Delft and Atlantis,” elabo-rates Potgieter.

It becomes crystal clear that Potgieter is

a woman on a mission. She quotes AnneFrank when she says: “How wonderful it isthat nobody needs to wait a single momentbefore starting to improve the world!”

Nutty knitters keep kids and aged warm

The badge with the letters CGD is mountedproudly on the front of the white Jeep inCharles Dyer (60) garage.

The letters are Charles’ initials and thereis very good reason for this badge. The jeep,as it stands in its complete state, was builtfrom scratch by Charles over a period of sixmonths at his home in of Kenridge.

Charles has always wanted to build a carand in September 2010 he gave the first steptowards making his dream come true.

Getting started he bought a Honda TRX 250quad bike and stripped it down to the bareessentials. He used the engine as the startingpoint for his design.

First up, was building the frame, afterputting together a model of the car on hiscomputer.

“I am a civil engineer by profession whichmeant I could do the structure. I used a quadbike engine as my basis and built the car inLand Rover style, because on the old LandRover one can seal with rivets,” he explains.

Althoughheobtainedpolice clearance, thejeep is not roadworthy yet.

“To have it declared roadworthy one hasto have a diffuser.” He bought a Nissan 1200bakkie diffuser to solve the problem.

Within six months his home-built jeep wasas good as completed.

“When building a jeep the things youthink will take you five minutes to completetake a week and vice versa,” Charles says.

On his computer he has a varie-ty of photos while the jeep was stilla work in progress.

There are photos of the quadbike and more photos of how itwas dismantled and used as theheart of his jeep.

Only original Land Rover partswere used for the door handlesand windscreen wipers.

Even the seat covers Charlessewed himself, on his grandmoth-er’s Singer sewing machine.

During the process, there werea couple of things Charles wasn’tcertain about so he experimenteda bit.

For the sheeting, he used a typeof material normally used for roof-ing sheets and wall cladding.

The indicator lights he madefrom perspex, by heating it up andpressing it into a mould. The head-lights he used are those from a VWGolf.

Charles calculates the jeep willreach a speed of approximately90km/h. He cannot wait to drivethe jeep.

“It sits nicely on the road,” hesays.

All that now stands betweenCharles, his jeep and the open road is theroadworthy certificate, which should comesoon.

Then it’s off to explore the world in his“dream”car, build entirelybyhis ownhandsand with lots of love.

Waar staan jy op hierdie oomblikmet jou lewe? Wat is die situasiemet betrekking tot jou verhou-dingslewe, jou familie, finansieel,beroep, gesondheid? Indien jy enigeomstandigheid van jou wil verbe-ter, moet jy nie wag vir iemand an-ders om dit vir jou te doen nie. The Non-Governmental Organisation(NGO) People Living with Cancer, will behosting the first-ever Cancer Empower-ment Day in Cape Town on 14 July.

This NGO focuses on providing peer topeer support to newly diagnosed cancer pa-tients and support groups country-wide.

During the day, there will be expert paneland introductory topic discussions entitled“Cancer advocacy in South Africa”, “Cosatuand lessons learned: a survivorperspective”,“Cost of cancer care, medical perspectiveand the role of cancer advocates”, and“Sadag: Health advocacy in action in SouthAfrica”.

Registration starts at 08:30 and the pro-gramme starts at 09:00.

Twee slagoffers van ’n beweerde laven-telhaan met ’n oënskynlike identiteits-krisis waarsku ander vroue om op die uit-kyk te wees vir dié man wat met systroopsoet beloftes geld uit hulle kry.

Hoewel minstens sewe vroue reeds dieslagoffer was van die man wat homself as adokter of veearts voordoen, word slegs tweekriminele sake tans by polisiestasies in dienoordelike voorstede ondersoek.

Albei vroue het sake van diefstal en intimi-dasie geopen teen die man bekend as Gert Ja-cobus van Tonder, maar ook die naam G.J.en Van Rooyen gebruik.

Die vroue se verhale stem baie ooreen.Kort ná G.J. hulle ontmoet, “leen” hy glo

geld vir verskeie redes. ’n Gunstelingrede isvir die aankoop van eksotiese voëls – sy stok-perdjie – ’n ander is vir mediese voorraad.

Een keer was dit “om mense te betaal watsy swembad herstel het” en in een geval selfsvir ’n televisie en DVD-speler. Van sy belof-tes om die geld terug te betaal, kom niks.

Twee van die slagoffers met wie G.J. in dieafgelope maande uitgegaan het, het hom opdie sosiale aanlynnetwerk Badoo ontmoet en’n derde vrou het hy by ’n plaaslike casinogenader.

Een van die vroue, Vanessa Bagmin vanPanorama, het hom as G.J. van Tonder by ’nplaaslike casino ontmoet. “Hy het vir my ge-sê hy is ’n veearts.”

Toe Vanessa se eksman Johan Maritz egtersy honde na G.J. se praktyk wou neem, hethy skielik sy storie verander en gesê hy hetnie ’n praktyk nie, maar locum.

Dié voorval het Johan onrustig gemaak en

hy het ’n privaatspeurder aangestel. “Onshet uitgevind 18 bedrogsake is tussen 2001 en2012 teen hom geopen, maar al die sake be-halwe een is deur die klaers teruggetrek,” sêJohan.

Intussen het G.J. by Vanessa ingetrek.Vier dae later het hy gevra vir R12 000 ommediese voorraad aan te koop. “Ek het virhom R5 000 geleen,” sê sy.

Vanessa moes ook weer uithaal en wys toeG.J. nog voëls aangekoop het en hy haar be-sonderhede verskaf het vir die verhaling vandie uitstaande bedrag. Sy moes noodgedwon-ge betaal nadat die voëlverkoper haar metdie gereg gedreig het.

Haar minnaar se ontrouheid het aan dielig gekom toe hy een oggend haar motor ge-leen het en sy dit met die ingeboude opspo-ringstelsel na Somerset-Wes gevolg het.

Dís hoe sy van Valerie uitgevind het.Valerie (’n skuilnaam) van Somerset-Wes

sê G.J. “mors nie tyd nie”.“Twee dae ná ek hom op Badoo ontmoet

het, het ons mekaar persoonlik ontmoet. Hyhet gesê hy is ’n dokter en op sy foto op Badoostaan hy ewe voor ’n Mediclinic met ’n ste-toskoop om sy nek,” sê Valerie.

Vir haar het hy vertel hy woon in Platte-kloof. Reeds op die eerste aand van hul ont-moeting wou hy R2 000 kontant leen om men-se te betaal wat sy swembad herstel het.

“Ek het slegs R1 800 by my gehad, wat ekvir hom geleen het,” sê sy. “Ek was sekerbaie naïef, maar hy lyk baie ordentlik,” sêValerie.

Nie lank daarna nie het G.J. voorgestel hyen Valerie begin ’n besigheid. Sy moesR30 000 gee om eksotiese voëls by ’n veilingte koop terwyl hy die hokke sou verskaf. Ditwas op pad terug van die veiling af wat sydie oproep ontvang het dat die motor voorhaar huis ’n “gesteelde motor” (Vanessa s’n)was.

“Hy het vir my gesê hy is ’n dokter wat asveearts spesialiseer en dat hy nie ’n praktykhet nie omdat hy eers onlangs klaar studeerhet,” sê ’n Table View-inwoner, Trish, wathom as Jacobus leer ken het. Trish wil niehaar van genoem hê nie.

Die twyfelagtige vryer in die middelpuntvan die situasie is ene George van Greunen.

“My voorletters is G.J en my ‘regte van’ isVan Greunen maar weens iets ‘persoonliks’tussen my en my pa het ek my van veranderna Van Rooyen,” verduidelik hy.

Verder sê hy hy sóú in ’n stadium die VanTonder-van aangeneem het. George het ont-ken dat hy ooit beweer het sy naam is GertJacobus. George sê hy woon nie meer in dieKaap nie. Hy voer aan dat hy en Vanessa wel’n verhouding gehad en toe ’n besigheid be-gin het. “Sy het klomp liegstories vir die poli-sie gaan vertel.”

Volgens hom wil Vanessa en haar vriendehom “in die hande kry om hom pak slae tegee”. Oor die diefstalsake sê hy: “Hulle moetbewys ek het die voëls gesteel. Julle vrou-mense kom weg met moord,” was sy ant-woord aan TygerBurger.

Having their headquarters in the heart ofthe newly formed Table Bay Nature Re-serve will greatly help local conserva-tionists to protect the unique biodiversi-ty found only in Cape Town.

This was the sentiment of Koos Retief,manager of the newly proclaimed Table BayNature Reserve last week.

The proclamation of this reserve – whichnow incorporates seven local protective por-tions of land under one entity – as well asthe newly built headquarters at Rietvlei wasofficially launched during a ceremony onWednesday.

“This is a process that started 12 years agoand we feel we have now taken a massivestep towards being able to manage Rietvleito the best of our ability,” Retief said duringthe event which was attended by localFriends groups and dignitaries includingthe executive mayor of Cape Town, Patriciade Lille.

Retief extended an appreciative word ofthanks to the Friends of Rietvlei and theFriends of the Paarden Eiland Wetlands whoplayed a big role in uniting the seven parcelsof conservation land under one name andmanagement body.

The proposal to combine the Rietvlei wet-lands, Milnerton lagoon, Milnerton beach,Milnerton race course, Zoarvlei wetlands,Diep River and the Parklands fynbos corri-dor as the Table Bay Nature Reserve cameabout during a public participation processearly last year which was part of the applica-tion to proclaim 15 sites with unique andcritical biodiversity as contract nature re-serves.

The city’s plans to proclaim these sites ascontract nature reserves were aimed at giv-ing these portions of land greater conserva-tion protection.

Other speakers highlighted the importantrole Cape Town’s biodiversity plays in tour-ism, job creation and poverty alleviation.

“Cape Town only covers 0,1 percent ofSouth Africa but has 18 percent of the coun-try’s Red List species. Table Mountain for in-stance has more plant species than the UK,”said the city’s Osman Asmal, director of en-vironmental resource management.

Asmal added that tourism is the corner-stone of the Cape Town economy and that thecity’s conservation image is therefore a verypowerful draw-card.

Louise Stafford, invasive species co-ordi-nator, stressed the current threat to thecity’s freshwater bodies.

“The two main problems are pollution andinvasive vegetation,” she said.

She said political will and support throughfunding is what is needed in the fight againstinvasive plant species.

In her speech De Lille said the city has putin place various environmentally friendlyinitiatives to ensure that future generationscan cherish the natural beauty of the land-scape of the city. One such initiative is theKader Asmal integrated catchment manage-ment project which aims to keep local riversand waterways clean.

“The aim of the Kader Asmal integratedcatchment management project is the resto-ration of our freshwater ecosystems throughbringing alien plant infestations under con-trol; addressing sources of pollution; raisingawareness and thereby engaging civil socie-ty to become custodians of our freshwater;and ensuring long-term sustainabilitythrough a river warden system,” De Lillesaid.

She added that the river warden systemwhich ensures longer term job creation is de-signed to serve as an early warning systemfor pollution and alien plant invasions, acti-vating a rapid response before the problembecomes wide-spread.

The only way parents can try and pro-tect their children is to teach them valuesand set a good example. Then trust that itwas enough for them to make the rightchoices under difficult circumstances.

We agree with Crous theobvious place for this second commercialcentre is along Voortrekker Road in Bell-ville, fed by the existing railway infra-structure – essential for a successful CBD.

Perhaps, as Planning’s Mr Rudman isquoted as saying in your article, “policyhas no force”, although you’d think itshould have.

What particularly concerns us aboutthis situation is where does this so calledsecond CBD expand to? Cities expand out-wards from their CBDs as business at-tracts business, but Tyger Valley is sur-rounded. To the north is our suburb, Ken-ridge, and the Durbanville Hillswinelands.

According to the policy documentsthese areas should be conserved. They are“good quality neighbourhoods ... it is notthe vision for these areas that the com-mercial precinct should expand into these(not now and not subsequent to the timeframe of the District Plan) ... businesscreep can easily threaten these areas and(they) must be protected against such on-slaughts ...” So if not into these areas, CityPlanners, how will your second CBDgrow? Or perhaps this protection for resi-dential areas is only the policy and policy,as City Planning says, “has no force”.

Harsh words from a mother of aspecial needs child, who admits toonce having the same kind of atti-tude towards disabled people.

We see them sitting at a shop en-trance. People walk past pretendingnot to notice. Some might stare andothers will stop briefly to add a cointo the donations tin in front of them.

“I was that person,” saysFaranaaz Rinquest. “I used to lookat people and I felt sorry for them,it’s not to say people are not con-cerned or compassionate, but theydon’t really understand.”

Faranaaz’s reality changed on 23January 2008, a date now engravedon her memory. A heart procedureon her son Ziyaad went horriblywrong and left the then five-year-old with severe cerebral palsy.

“It was worse than death for me,that was how I felt, because theygave me someone else back.”

She resigned from her job andover the past four years most of herlife has revolved around takingcare of Ziyaad.

About a year ago things started toregress out of nowhere. Ziyaad’smobility slowed down, he couldn’tswallow properly and he developedapnea, where there is an impulsefrom the brain to stop breathing.

Increasing episodes of apnea ledto his readmission to the Red CrossChildren’s Hospital. After twomonths in hospital, with his dad athis side 24/7, Ziyaad is now back athome. His parents want to give him

comfort care.“The doctors asked me what I

think, whether he is regressing to-wards death, and I said, well he’sdefinitely going somewhere and it’snot the positive way. They saidwhenever we treat him, we’re nothealing him, we’re just interveningwith theprocess thathewill eventu-ally not be here any more. We’reputting his body through morework, because he has pushed fur-ther than what they expected for hiscondition,” she explains.

“He will have no further surgeryas any anaesthetic will be deadly.He cannot even be resuscitated. Sowe decided to give him comfort carefor these last months. No more anti-biotics, no more drips, no more in-terventions because his body is just

doing too much work.”The Rinquests are one of 28 fami-

Founder Sue van der Lindefeels strongly about a holisticapproach. She returned aftereight years in the UK, whereshe worked with the children’shospice Julia’s House. Backhome she was determined to

open a similar facility in the CapeTown area. According to Sue theoriginal intention of the charity

was to raise money to build a con-ventional children’s hospice. How-ever, in order to meet the needs ofthe children and families more ef-fectively, the charity has concen-trated its efforts firstly on provid-ing care in the families’ own homes.

At present Sue’s home in Welgele-gen doubles as an office from wheredonations are distributed and careworkers are trained. She is current-ly innegotiations to acquire abuild-ing to call their own, hopefully oneon the premises of the Karl Bremerhospital in Bellville.

Her vision is not that of a tradi-tional hospice, but rather to pro-vide a place where children are en-couraged to reach their full poten-tial, however limited that may be.“We aim to make Iris House a placewhere children can attend day ses-sions, overnight care and short res-pite periods, a home away fromhome.”

Metal bands will be invadingBuckleys in Edward Street thisweekend for To the Stage Two.

To the Stage is set to become aregular series of events on thenorthern suburbs calendar thanksto Numero Productions.

Alex Toua, from Numero, ex-plains that the concept was startedby Charl Strutt and Neil Schoe-man, who had been hosting rockshows in the area.

Alex, who is friends with Charl,was asked to help them break intoa heavier genre.

Buckleys recently acquired atheir entertainment licence andhosting the event there would helpNumero promote To the Stage andBuckleys as a live entertainmentvenue.

The first To the Stage was hostedin June as a rock event. The planis to alternate monthly betweenrock and metal events, giving localbands the opportunity to perform.

TheTo theStage eventnamewaschosen by means of a competition,while their logo was designed bya local art group, City Lights Col-lective.

Paul Bothners has come onboard as a sponsor for the eventsand Mirage Custom Tattoos willbe doing tattoo demonstrations atall the metal events.

Two of the bands performing atTo the Stage Two will be MarchingDead and Suiderbees.

Marching Dead, the brainchildof Igor Crouse, has been goingsince 2007. Their current line-upconsists of Pierre van Niekerk on

guitar, Christiaan Blom on bass,Werner von Waltsleben on drumsand Igor on guitar and vocals.

After a short sabbatical when Ig-or was overseas, the band startedhitting stages again at the begin-ning of the year, after performingat Rock the River.

Marching Dead, who have neverreleased any of their music, arehoping to have their debut EP,with the tongue-in-cheek title, The

Greatest Hits, ready for the showon Saturday.

“I think it’s ridiculous thatwe’ve never released anything,”Igor says, pointing out that mostof their fans know their songswell.

Alex points out that MarchingDead have opened a lot of doors inthe metal community since theirconception.

“They kind of set the level at

which bands are recognised froma professional side,” he says.

Suiderbees is an equally bigname in the metal community,having opened for internationalband, Fleshgod Apocalypse, whenthey toured SA.

The band, who has been togeth-er for about two and a half years,is also busy with its debut album,The Segregation, which they hopeto release in early 2013.

The band is made up of ColeGrainger on drums, Karin Preto-rius on keyboards, Marc Olwageon bass and lead vocals, Divan deKock on lead guitars and backupvocals and Dawie Pretorius onrhythm guitar.

Cole describes their music as “abit of everything”, while Marccalls it: “Epic music with a brutaltwist and a splash of melody”.

Virtuoso choreographer, Cindyvan Acker, is set to mesmerise ina magical mix of body, spirit,sound and rhythm.

The Geneva-based choreogra-pher Cindy Van Acker will be visit-ing the southern African region forthe first time, with two solos out ofa series of six, which focus on a so-ber, intimate, virtuoso explorationof body movement, through a slowinteraction with gravity.

The South African premiere ofthe two solos, Lanx and Obtus willtake place at the National Arts Fes-tival in Grahamstown.

In Cape Town she will present

Fractie, which will be followed by atalk from the artist and a screeningof the dance films made on the sixexisting solos.

As part of the Cape Town experi-ence, there will also be workshopswith youth dancers and other dancecompanies at Joseph Stone Audito-rium, hosted by Eoan productions,delivered by the artist. These willprecede the Lanx and Obtus per-formance at the same space.

Trained in classical ballet, CindyVan Acker first worked in the Flan-ders Royal Ballet, Belgium. Afterjoining Geneva’s Grand Theatre,she began creating her own piecesin 1994, and launched into an inter-

national career with Corps 00:00 atthe Geneva ADC in 2002.

She will be in Cape Town from 8July with workshops for EoanGroup youth dancers, youth fromschools, dance schools and commu-nities.

On Tuesday 10 July she will be atHiddingh Hall at UCT from 17:30with a performance of Fractie anda talk and screening of the dancefilms.

On Wednesday 11 July she will beat the Joseph Stone Auditoriumfrom 20:00 with performances ofLanx and Obtus.

The wheels are in motion withthe upcoming South AfricanElite Amateur Boxing Champi-onship – an attempt to regain theglory days of yesteryear in CapeTown.

The Western Cape Sports Schoolin Kuils River will host the champi-onship from tomorrow to 7 July.

“The glory days I refer to werewhen the likes of Cape boxing

champions such as Skeleton Mbo-ma, Sydney Hoho, Bashew Sibaca,Sipho Mange, Chris and BramleyWhiteboy dominated the South Af-rican boxing scene,” said Dr IvanMeyer, provincial minister of cul-tural affairs and sport at a medialaunch last week.

All nine provinces will be repre-sented in this prestigious event.

“I am particularly pleased that fe-male boxers will also be participat-

ing in this event as wehave to ensure thatgreater access happensso that all boxers, irre-spective of gender, aregiven the opportunity toparticipate and develop

to their full potential.”This championship is seen as the

perfect platform for the revival ofWestern Cape and Cape Town box-ing.

The hard work starts now to en-sure that development grooms thenew crop of future stars.
