If you receive a nicely wrapped package atyour house, it might not be from your lov-ing family.The South African Post Office (Sapo) has

warned the public to be on alert of a scamdoing the rounds where customers areduped into depositing money into fraudu-lent Postbank accounts.

According to Martie Gilchrist, WesternCape regional communications manager ofthe Post Office situated at Ruyterwacht, thescheme starts when you receive a sealed

Speed Services Couriers package deliveredat your doorstep or workplace.

“Inside the package is a laminated certifi-cate claiming that a substantial amount hasbeen paid into a Postbank account openedfor you. The instruction in your deliverypackage states to activate the Postbank ac-count in order to claim your winnings, youneed to pay a certain amount of cash into an-other account. This is when you are connedbecause you will not be seeing the moneythat you have deposited into that other ac-count again,” says Gilchrist.

Sapo advises the public to ignore items ofthis nature when they receive them.

“Postbank, the Sapo or any of its subsidi-aries will never open an account on your be-half and request an activation fee. Youshould always be wary of any promises oflarge sums of winnings for competitions younever took part in. Also, you should knowthat you are probably being scammed in anysituation where you are required to pay anamount of money upfront, either as an ad-ministration fee or for any other reason, toaccess large sums of money,” says Gilchrist.

At this stage they are not sure how manypeople have been victims of the scam.

“We were alerted about the scam when awoman went to her local post office wanting

to claim her money. She was told she hadbeen scammed.

“We immediately alerted the police aboutit. At this stage we cannot comment on howbig or far reaching the scam is, but we be-lieve if we stop it before it spreads, it willbe a good thing. It is outrageous what thesescamsters come up with, so people need tobe extra vigilant,” says Gilchrist.

Sapo is working with law enforcementagencies to trace the perpetrators of thisscam, and the public is requested to call thepolice or the Post Office’s Crime Buster Hot-line on 0800 020 070 with any informationthey might have.

The Bothasig Girl Guides and Rangersthis past Saturday joined the Merri-man Lions from Goodwood and the

Bothasig police in an environmental projectcalled Bag-a-Burger.

The fifteen Guides and Rangers were eachhanded a black bag and protective gloves byWarrant Officer Jacques Mostert and KevinLeach and briefed on their mission: pick uplitter.

According to Mostert a police van was onhand to help move the bags filled with rub-bish. “The Guides and Rangers left the po-

lice station on a designated route and start-ed cleaning up the environment. They wereaccompanied by Reservist Constable JohanPrinsloo. While this was taking place,Leach and I braaied the hamburger pattiesand prepared the burgers which they verydeservedly worked for,” says Mostert.

When everyone had a drink and a burger,Mostert started talking to them about sub-stance abuse.

“I was supported by two members fromthe UCAN rehabilitation centre who sharedtheir experience regarding substance de-pendency and the impact on their lives aswell as the lives of their families. The ques-tions raised by the audience were honestlyanswered and stern warnings issued by thetwo guest speakers that help should beasked instead of going down the addictionroute,” says Mostert.

Dennis (not real name) explained how hegot involved in drugs and the lengths hewould go to get hold of drugs, even if itmeant he had to steal from his mother tosupport his habit. “I have been in rehab fora while and my mother had spoken to meonly a few weeks ago for the first time inthree years,” he says.

Tanya Prinsloo, a Ranger guide, ex-pressed everyone’s thanks to the MerrimanLions Club and Bothasig police for arrang-ing the project and inviting them to be partof it.

Old Tokkie’s steam(y) love story

Oom Jim’s sons and their families made a special trip to Cape Town to see Old Tokkie.

Old Tokkie, one of two steam enginesguarding the entrance to Intaka IslandEco-Centre, was the subject of a profoundlove story.

The other protagonist of this love storywas Oom Jim van Rensburg, an enginedriver at the Douglas Colliery near Emah-lahleni in Mpumalanga.

Oom Jim started working at the collieryin 1958. At the time the colliery had threesteam locomotives – two large ones to haulcoal from the mine to the nearest railwaystation at Vandyksdrift and a small Doug-las No 3 engine to help shunt the trucksand occasionally to help nudge the largerengines if they were battling to haul coaltrucks over the hill, says Lewellyn Jansevan Rensburg, the third of Oom Jim’s foursons.

He says the small engine was lovinglycalled Tokkolos after the small Zulu myth-ical figure Tokoloshe but to Oom Jim shewas just Old Tokkie.

“Oom Jim loved steam engines. He usedto joke that when he went for blood tests,the doctor had to squirt out the first 10ml,as it was just steam.”

Lewellyn says when his dad worked thenight shift, they would listen for the soundof the steam engine coming back from thestation.

“My dad would then use the steam en-gine’s whistle to say to us ‘I love you’ bygiving his signature whistle: one longwhistle followed by three short ones - tuu-uuut, tu-tu-tut, repeated a few times. I canstill hear it.”

Shortly before Oom Jim retired in 1986,

the mine decided to retire Tokkolos by plac-ing it on display in front of the mine’s offices.

“It was my dad’s honour to extinguish thelast fire in her belly, and fasten the handbrake for the last time.”

In a letter Oom Jim wrote in 1991 to PeterHolz, the then editor of Mining World, hespoke of his affection for Old Tokkie.

“I love Old Tokkie....If she could talk shewould say ‘I Love Oom Jim also because healways cleaned me till I looked like a lovelylady with a beautiful dress and shoes.’

“I always used to talk to Old Tokkolos andsaid if you pull this load for me nicely, I’ll takeyou to the Drive In on Friday night. She al-ways obliged. Whenever I go to Douglas I al-ways go to see her and climb into the cab,work the controls and do a little bit of dustingoff for her and believe me when I leave, myeyes are wet ...”

Lewellyn said his dad’s wishes were to beburied next to Old Tokkie.

“Unfortunately the mining company decid-ed to use open cast mining in the area whereI grew up, including Tokkolos’ prime positionin front of the mine’s offices. Tokkolos wasremoved and we had no idea what happenedto her.”

Oom Jim passed away on 14 September1998, and was buried in Witbank’s ceme-tery.

“The only thing we could do to honour hislove for steam engines was to put a head-stone on his grave in the form of a steamengine’s chimney and steam dome.”

He said they always wondered what hadhappened to old Tokkolos.

“Then, last year, I happened to watchKwêla on DSTV with my wife and there wasa glimpse of old Tokkolos standing in Centu-ry City! I quickly rewound the decoder tosee if my eyes were playing tricks on me.I was sure it was old Tokkolos. After a bitof searching on the internet I found a sitethat confirmed this was indeed Old Tokko-los.”

Two weeks ago Lewellyn and his youngerbrother, Lionel, together with their wivesand children, travelled to Cape Town to visitOld Tokkie at Intaka.

“It was very special and it is wonderfulto know that Old Tokkie, the proud old lady,finally has a special spot where she can givevisitors a glimpse into the very special rolethat steam engines played in our history.Oom Jim would have been very proud!”

Members of the Merrimen Lions, the Bothasig police and the Bothasig Girl Guides and Rangerswith the bags of rubbish they collected.

AR11.7 million project to make the N7highway safer, is nearly complete.The project being undertaken by

the provincial transport and public worksdepartment, has seen the installation ofnew street lights on theN7 between the Bos-mansdam and Potsdam interchanges tomake this section safer.Once this project is complete, theWestern

Cape government will have installed streetlights along three critical roads, namely theN1, N2 and N7 up to the point where theSouthAfricanNational Roads Agency (San-ral) is responsible.The new lights are being installed along

the median, which includes the laying ofnew cable and four new electrical connec-tions.During winter last year, many motorists

raised the alarm about people crossing thedark road and the transport departmentconfirmed several fatalities.According to departmental spokesperson

Byron La Hoe, the erection and installationworks have been completed but the Eskom

power supply connections are still out-standing.Asked whether the recent protests in Du-

noon and the subsequent closures of thehighway affected or delayed the project,La Hoe said these protests have not affectedthe construction works as a result of the ef-

forts of the contractor to liaisewith the localcommunity.“The project has created work opportuni-

ties for the residents of Dunoon in particu-lar. There have been several labour issues,but this has been resolved during the courseof the project.”

tooi, sal Jacques dit graageers in die noordelike voor-stede uitstal voordat dieWeense staatsoperahuishom en die klaviertjie naWene laat vlieg en by ’n for-mele geleentheid onthul.Maar Jacques erken dat

die enorme uitdagings wathom in die gesig staar dalkte groot sal wees vir hom omdie paal te haal.“Ek moet dit doen. Ek

moet.“Daar is vreemde bloed-

selle wat lek op my retina,wat veroorsaak dat my sigvan uur tot uur wissel. Soos ek nou hierstaan, sien ek net ’n klomp swart kolle. Ekbly maar positief, maar ek plaas baie stresop my gesonde oog met al hierdie fyn werk.“Ek moet seker maar aanvaar dat ek my

slegte oog heeltemal gaan verloor. Al wat ekkan doen, is my beste en ek moet maar posi-

tief bly. Dit is virmybelangrik. Daar sal pro-bleme wees. Die spertyd plaas my onder ge-weldige druk en ek moet dit probeer ver-werk. Maar ek sal wen!”Die laaste rooi lig van die weerkaatsende

wolke val op Jacques se gesig, en vir ’n oom-blik lyk hy nie ouer as 50 nie.

En dan twyfel ’n mens nie dat hierdie vas-beslote en passievolle man sy beste werk salvoltooi voor die donkerte op hom toesak nie.Hy kan dit egter nie doen sonder ’n bietjie

Die kompetisie was die afgelope sewe jaarslegs vir leerders, maar volgens JapieGouws, die uitvoerende hoof van die ATKV,was daar nog altyd ’n aanvraag van volwas-senes wat ook ’n platform gesoek het om huleie gedigte te publiseer.

“Die gedigtekompetisie was ook gewildomdat daar ’n groot behoefte onder tienersis om uiting te gee aan hul drome, emosiesen bepaalde kwessies in gedigte. Dit het indie verlede aan duisende aspirantdigtersdie platform gebied om gedigte te skryf ente publiseer,” sê Gouws. Maar nou vat dieATKV enKuierdit ’n tree verder. Hulle nooiook alle volwassenes uit om ’n Afrikaansegedig in te skryf en moontlik in die prosesvet pryse los te slaan. Die wenner van diehoërskool-kategorie wen R3 000 in kontant,terwyl dié in die tweede en derde plekke on-derskeidelik R2 000 en R1 000 kry.

In die volwasse kategorie is R5 000 vir dieskrywer van die wengedig op die spel. Die

tweede en derde plek se wenners kry onder-skeidelik R4 000 en R3 000. Inskrywings kanin enige variant van Afrikaans wees.

Die beoordelaars gaan dus ook besluitwie van die volwasse of hoërskoolwennerdie beste oorspronklike gedig geskryf het,waarna Hemelbesem, bekende kunstenaaren Pasella-aanbieder, dié gedig op ’n videogaan vertolk. Gouws sê: “Die beste gedigteis ook in 2013 in ’n spesiale bundel, Ek enals tussenin, uitgegee. Vanjaar trek diekompetisie ’n nuwe baadjie aan en kry vol-wassenes ook die geleentheid om met hulledigtalente te woeker.”

Construction of Manhattan Quarter,a complex of 63 apartments over-looking the Grand Canal in Century

City, has topped out and is on schedulefor completion in October.

Being developed by the Rabie PropertyGroup at a cost of R150m, ManhattanQuarter comprises generously sizedapartments which were all sold outmonths ahead of construction, whichstarted in July last year.

make us all sleep a little more uncomfort-ably at night.

You know those days when you feel asif something is wrong, but you can’t puta finger on it?

It’s probably the feeling of guilt.Many think a “thank you” is all that is

expected from us when a nurse tends to aloved one in hospital.

I’m obviously not a nurse, so I can’tspeak for them, but while I wouldappreciate a “thank you” as a nurse, itdoes not pay the rent.

When the first winter stormhit the Cape on 22 April, myneighbour’s and my electricityflickered at about 17:00 andthen went out.

It appeared that everyoneelse in the street had lightsexcept the two of us. Notworried, we both phoned theemergency number 086 010 3089as they have always beenexceptional in their response towhatever the problem was.

Not this time, unfortunately.Between the two of us, we

must have spent several hourswaiting for an answer from theemergency number, but to noavail.

The long and short of it wasthat apart from two hours onSaturday afternoon when thetechnicians came out after Isent an e-mail from work indesperation, and after they hadleft, the electricity trippedagain. We were withoutelectricity for the wholeweekend until Sunday night at22:00.

What happened was thatwhen whoever dug trenches tolay fibre optic cables, theyruptured one of the electriccables which supplies power toour two houses. The repair hadnot been done correctly andwhen the wet reached thecables, it caused a short.

The technicians who cameout on Sunday night andworked for two hours torestore our power were fantas-tic, to say the least. They saidthat as a result of all thedamage the storm had caused,the telephone lines as well asthe SMS lines were totallyoverloaded. It appears that theonly e-mail address which wassuccessful in making contact,was “[email protected]” and thiswas given to me by an ESKOMemployee who was one of the

“I call it my cause album,” Auriol Hayssays of her upcoming release.The local singer will be officially

launching her aptly namedDreamingMusicat a secret location on Saturday 28 May andwith it, shehopes to give a voice to thosewhoneed it.While she’s very aware that the songs on

her new albummay not suit commercial ra-dio, Auriol says: “They come from a verydeep place and they aremeant to create a dif-ference.”One of the songs on the album, for exam-

ple, is “Come to Me”, which she wrote toraise awareness about “The Arctic 30”, agroup of Greenpeace activists and journal-istswhowere arrested for protesting againstoil drilling in the Arctic.She was invited to perform the song on a

Greenpeace boat last year when their Rain-bow Warrior was docked in Cape Town.Another of her songs, “Pray for Rain”, has

been used by the Dress Jozi Campaign, anorganisation that helps care for the home-less residents of Johannesburg. “That’s awonderful thing.”Then there’s her track “Help me Out”

which has been used by the South AfricanDepression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).“I like that themusic is beingusedbyorga-

nisations that want to create some kind ofchange.”Auriol says many fans refer to her previ-

ous album, Call it Love, as “a break-up al-bum”. “It was sad and beautiful,” she says,adding: “This album, I’d like to think, is somuch happier and bolder.”The music switches between blues, folk,

reggae with elements of many other genres,including what Auriol calls her “Bond in-spired song”. “Because I’m a storyteller, Itell the story in whichever way works best.”She’s also quick to point out that the fan-

working in Johannesburg for three years,Auriol says a random person “out of thegoodness of his heart” connected her witha group. While André is the only survivingbandmember, the situation evolved into onewhere she now works with what she calls“an amazing bunch of musicians”.While many of them play for other artists,

Auriol says shealwaysworkswith the groupwhen formulating a song “so that it’s ourmusic and not my music”.“We always have a good time on stage.”Away from the stage, Auriol is also mov-

ing into the film industry, playing the roleof the “seer” in the local Sci-Fi series Spe-lonk. A song she released with CrimsonHouse frontman Riaan Smit, “Child Atone”,will also be featured in the postapocalypticpiece that exploreswhatmusic and languagewould sound like in 2044.Auriol is in the process of writing a book

which she is releasing in segments on herwebsite. “I am essentially writing to mygreat granddaughter about music and life,”she explains.“When I sit and write, I have a greater

Western Province’s Gerlou Rouxstaved off Shaun Stapleton fromCentral Gauteng to claim back-to-

back titles in the SA Mid-Amateur StrokePlay Championship recently.“I guess I got a jump on that old adage

that life begins at 40; if 39 is this good, Ican’twait to hit the forties,” jested theBell-ville golfer after he sealed a two-stroke vic-tory on eight under 280 with rounds of 68,73, 68 and 71 at Silver Lakes Country Clubin Pretoria.Roux swept to a four-shot triumph last

year, but this time around, the country’snumber one ranked mid-amateur said vic-tory tasted a whole lot sweeter.“It’s taken a few days to sink in, because

it was mentally a lot tougher to go the fulldistance this year,” said Roux.“When I set myself a goal to represent

South Africa on both the Open Amateurand Mid-Amateur circuits last year, Icouldn’t even describe the feeling when Iachieved it. But like most of the guys onthemid-amateur circuit, I hold downa full-time job and that had to take priority.“I came into the tournament knowing

that I have a target onmy back. It was real-ly tight at the top over the four rounds. Ikept my head down and got the job doneand that’swhy thiswin feels somuchmore

special.”Roux started the final round with a one-

stroke edge over Stapleton and a two-shotlead on Central Gauteng’s Ryan Dreyer.“I knew the last round would be tough,”

Roux said. “When you have three ex-Sun-shine Tour pros going head-to-head, it wasalways going to be an extreme test of pa-tience and willpower.”Rouxburst from theblockswith abirdie,

but short-sided himself at the second hole.“There is a tree right in themiddle of the

fairway at this par five,” he said. “I hit agood tee shot, but the ball just kept goingstraight and it finished up a few inchesfrom the trunk. My only option was topunch out, but I still had 210 metres to thepin. I took my medicine and moved on.”Rouxnotchedbirdies at sevenand 10 and

had a two shot lead on Stapleton when thepair reached the par four 17th.“I pulledmy tee shot in the rough,” Roux

said. “With the pin at the back of the islandgreen, I decided to lay up rather than gofor the pin. I hit a decent chip, but I missedthe par putt. Shaun nearly flew the green,but his ball stayed up. His chip landed twofeet from the hole and he holed the putt tosave par. Going to 18, my lead was cut toone and I was going to go all out. Shaunplayed first and hit his tee shot in the haz-

ard on the right. I knew he would struggleto save par, so I put the driver back in thebag, took out a rescue and a moreconservative approach. All Ineeded was a regulation fiveto win.”Roux parred the hole to

seal victory, Stapletonmade six for a 72 to finishsole second and Dreyerclosed with a 74 to takethird on 285.“I beat kids more

than half my age toreach the numberone spot in therankings and itwas a huge dealfor me when Ireached my goal torepresent South Afri-ca on both circuits last year, butwhen you start knocking onthe door at 40, you have tomake sacrifices,” Roux said.“Now that I have back-to-

back wins, I’ve given my-self a new goal for nextyear. I’m going to go for ahat-trick and that gives every guy on themid-amateur circuit the goal to stop me.”
