oop te sny.Die jongste voorval het Maandagoggend in

Goodwood plaasgevind toe verdagtes probeerhet om ’n FNB-kitsbank by die OK Minimarkoop te sny.In dié voorval het ’n alarm afgegaan, wat die

booswigte die skrik op die lyf gejaag het en hul-le is onverrigter sake vort.Volgens ao. Wayne Theunis, polisie-woord-

voerder van Goodwood, is ’n staalhek met ’nboutsnyer oopgebreek, waarna daar probeer isombydie agterkantvandiekitsbank in tekom.“Dit wil voorkom of hulle met die eerste pro-

“Die man het beweer hy is gedreig en sy peten kontant is by hom afgeneem. Die klaer hetdie naam van sy aanvaller geken en toe hy ditvir die polisie gee, het die lede hom onthouvan ’n vorige klag,” sê Theunis.

Konstt. Llewellyn Brandt en Bernard Engel-brecht het na ’n adres in Goodwood gegaan.

“Toe die lede daar kom, het die verdagte ag-ter sy ma se rug weggekruip. Dit het hom egternie gehelp nie en hy is in hegtenis geneem,”sê Theunis. Die verdagte het op ’n klag vanroof in die hof verskyn.

Volgens Theunis ervaar Goodwood tans ’ntoename in rooftogte.

“Ons wil ’n beroep doen op die gemeenskapom geïsoleerde en donker plekke te vermy.Daar is ook gevalle waar aanvalle in die dagplaasvind. So, mense moet maar waaksaamwees as hulle op straat is. Baie van die aanval-lers is gewapen met messe en ander skerpvoorwerpe – selfs vuurwapens,” sê Theunis.

Verdagte wordagter sy ma serug uitgehaal

Two suspects were arrested on Monday 27 Ju-ly after they tried to steal a motorbike.

At about 20:15 Constable Wendell Keteldasresponded to a complaint of theft of a motorbi-ke in Cambridge Street, Goodwood. On hisway to the scene he saw a man was chasingtwo people, a man and a woman. Keteldas joi-ned the chase and caught the man, who turnedout to be a suspect.

The complainant said he saw the two sus-pects pushing his red Motomia. When askedwhat they were doing, they told said the bikebelonged to them. He then took the key out ofhis pocket and started the bike.

The suspects fled with the complainant inpursuit.On his way to the police station, Ketel-das spotted the second suspect hiding behindcars and arrested her.

A foster mother claims a local Bell-ville clinic refused to assist herwhen she went to collect medication

for her two foster children.Bubby Killian lives in Goodwood, but

says she regularly visits the Reed StreetCommunity Day Centre, a clinic in Bell-ville.

During visits last Monday and Tuesday,when she went to collect the chronic med-ication for Attention Deficit and Hyperac-tivity Disorder and epilepsy, Bubby saysshe had to wait for hours.

“When I go to the clinic, I normally goat 11:00. This means I miss the morningrush. There are people who sit outsidethose doors from before five in the morn-ing. I have to leave at two to collect thekids from school.”

Official channelThe twins are 12 and both attend the Al-

ta du Toit School in Kuils River, says Bub-by.

She claims to have previously com-plained about poor service, following theofficial channel.

“The manager never even responded to

that first complaint. There is such a longwaiting time and the gates of the facilityare closed for the staff’s lunch time,” shesays.

She plugged her laptop into the facili-ty’s power supply to work while waitingand was “disrespectfully” asked to un-plug it, Bubby says.

A doctor had prescribed aqueous lotionand disposable nappies for her children,but when Bubby went to the clinic’s dis-pensary, the staff would not give her thesesupplies, she says.

After her child had suffered a severe ep-ileptic attack, Bubby says she asked thepharmacist for advice, but he “wouldn’ttalk to me”.

The clinic’s senior sister phonedTyger-Burger after the complaint was put tothem. “We will have to investigate the al-legations regarding the alleged incidentbefore any comment can be given.”

Provincial health department spokes-person Sithembiso Magubane sent Tyger-Burger an official response.

He says the clinic is open eight hoursdaily and its services include acute andchronic adult curative services, antire-troviral decanting and minor emergencycare.

“Reed Street was experiencing staff

shortage on the day in question, and espe-cially in the pharmacy,” he says.

“The client was asked nicely to unplugher laptop and reasons for asking weregiven. The facility has an electricity ac-count which is used for service deliveryand not for personal use by clients,” Ma-gubane says.

ProceduresHe stressed there are procedures for or-

dering miscellaneous items such as nap-pies – these are not dispensed from a phar-macy, and are ordered and collectedmonthly.

“The department’s policy only allowsnappies to be issued to the elderly who arediagnosed with conditions such as uri-nary incontinence and living in old agehomes.”

He said it is standard practice thatwhen medication is issued to clients, theyare given the required health informa-tion.

“New medication must at all times bediscussed with the client to educate andinform them. The Triage system is themethod used for walk-ins to determine theseriousness of a patient’s illness.”

He says all patients are assessed accord-ing to their Triage rating on arrival.

Forum for Bothasig and EdgemeadThe Bothasig and Edgemead Stakehold-

ers’ Forum was recently established asa means to interact with the communi-

ty.It is also a platform for residents and

stakeholders within various sectors of Both-asig and Edgemead to put forward their con-cerns and interests, says forum secretaryLesley Niemand.

She said it did not replace any other exist-ing community organisation, forum or asso-ciation.

“As the community’s needs are constantlychanging and growing, whilst not writing offand disregarding what we have learnt andachieved in the past, the various membersand sectors of the community must move

forward and embrace change and growth.“We all have vested and very different in-

terests in the area, which is why differentsectors have been created within the forum,for example the neighbourhood watch,sports, business, schools, crèches, senior cit-izens, churches, private security, residentsof varying age groups, with the variousmembers reporting back to and obtaining in-put from the various sectors they repre-sent,” says Niemand.

The forum committee meets every secondmonth with an annual public meeting to pro-vide feedback to the community.

“Areas of interest that have been dis-cussed include the ongoing development ofthe Edgemead Park at the Bend, assisting

crèches and day-care centres with a view tooffering advice and assistance, the astro turfrecently laid at Edgemead High School andtraffic congestion in Edgemead and Bothas-ig.

“We also spoke about the possibility ofopening further entrance and exit arteriesin Edgemead, the MyCiti public transportservice and Integrated Development Plan.

“Residents are urged to forward any ideasto the City of Cape Town to be placed on thebudget, the public participation process re-garding the proposed runway re-alignmentand new flight corridor. Development musttake place from which the community andthe Western Cape will benefit, but noise pol-lution must also be considered.

“Possible tweaks to the proposed flightcorridor enabling air traffic to fly on the pe-riphery of Bothasig and Edgemead (which iscurrently the position) thereby reducingnoise levels has been suggested, notificationfrom the police and neighbourhood watchesof any liquor licence renewals or new appli-cations, feedback on crime trends and thelike will be discussed and we’ll try and findpossible solutions.”

The Riverside College has started a Robot-ics Academy in order to broaden learners’horizons.

According to principal Dave Swart notevery learner is a sport star, a budding art-ist or a chef in the making. “Some of ourlearners were really interested in gettinginvolved in the exciting and often misun-derstood world of technology. The greatestpart of doing this for the learners is watch-ing them grow. At first they were a little in-secure and unsure of what they should bedoing, but then their confidence kicked inand that’s when the magic happened. Theyare transformed into another world andthis is where their creative juices start toflow,” says Swart.

He said the learners have realised theycan do so much more than they initially

thought possible. “Robotics has helpedthem with problem-solving, as well as crea-tive and lateral thinking. Technology ispart of the world we now live and work inand we will expand the Robotics Academyto include our younger learners as well.Our children live in a visual world andmaking such programmes part of theirschooling experience will have great bene-fits for them now and in the future.

“Education needs to be interactive, in-formative and challenging in order for ourlearners to grasp the various subjects andthink out of the box,” says Swart.

Nina Jade, a Grade 10 learner who takespart in the programme, says robotics has avery bright future. “As we all know, tech-nology is the future and more and more of-ten we see that robots are used to performfunctions that people used to do. Roboticsis loads of fun too and children will love it,”says Nina.

For Alister Stewart(Grade 8) it is all aboutprogramming. “This isthe absolute best part ofthe course for me be-cause we learned to pro-gramme the robot our-selves. Just by using dif-ferent sensors you canmake the robot do verycool stuff. The future isall about technology andif you know about robotsand programming youwill know a little moreabout the future,” saysAlister.

Interacting with therobots was the highlightfor Joseph Els (Grade10). “Learning how theywork. I learnt how toprogramme a robot, togo through a maze and todo other things,” hesays.

A solution to that is makethem as uncomfortable aspossible during the night. If onebuys veggies at certain shops,they have a fine water spraysystem that automaticallyswitches on and off at intervalsto keep the veggies fresh. Whynot uses something like thisoutside the shops? Pipes andsprinklers could be installedhigh under the overhangoutside the shop. These couldswitch on at night for everyhalf hour or so for 30 seconds,or whatever works. The sprayis fine but wetting and notmuch water will be used. It willalso keep the pavements clean.What do you think?

Verlede jaar was ek bietjie indie nood en moes ek my seunse selfoon verpand by ’n winkelin die Parow-sentrum. Ek kondit egter eers oor twee maandeterugkoop.

Toe ek tuiskom en dieselfoon vir my seun teruggee,kom hy agter die selfoon geeonmiddellik probleme. Ek hetdit daar gelaat, omdat dit myeie onnoselheid was om nie dieselfoon te toets toe ek dit byhulle gekry het nie.

’n Maand gelede neem myman sy selfoon en verpand ditby dieselfde winkel. Toe hy syfoon gaan haal, het hy dit ooknie nagegaan nie en kom eersby die huis agter dat daarlelike skrape op die skerm is enlater die dag ook dat dieluidsprekers foutief is. Dieselfoon was slegs twee maandeoud en in uitstekende toestand.

Hy kon dit egter nie terug-neem nie, want hulle soueenvoudig net sê hy kon dit oppad huis toe beskadig het.

So wees maar versigtig as jyjou goed verpand by die winkel,omdat hulle nie versigtig metjou goed werk nie. Dit is mosnie hulle s’n nie. Baie swakvan hulle. Ek’s nogal teleurge-steld.

Tygerberg is the sub-district hardesthit by ongoing vandalism, burglariesand the impact of gang violence at

health facilities says City mayco memberfor health, Siyabulela Mamkeli.

Mamkeli said moneyspent on damagesand security couldmake amajor differenceto primary health care facilities.

The health department has allocatedR10,6 million for security at health facili-ties in the eight sub-districts in this finan-cial year. This is R2m more than last year.

“Some of our facilities are really takinga battering at the hands of vandals and cri-minals and security therefore continues tobe a big headache,” said Mamkeli.

“It is a sad day when our clinics start re-sembling prisons. This is not the ideal envi-ronment for staff or clients and the realityis that increased budgets do not account forthe emotional toll on the people who workin the clinics or use the facilities. We arestruggling to retain staff in some areas andfill vacancies in suburbs considered high-risk. This impacts on service delivery,” hesays.

Apart from the increased budget, thehealth department will also liaise with thesafety and security directorate about guar-ding facilities, as well as investigate howthe newly launched Stabilisation Unitcould assist in high-risk areas.

In addition, the directorate is prioriti-sing interventions to address staff morale.

“We cannot simply continue throwingmoney at the problem. Until people changetheirmind-set and start recognising the va-lue of protecting assets in their communi-ties, we will continue to face this problem.I amhoping that the increased securityme-asures will go some way toward makingstaff feel more at ease,” he says.

If you keep struggling with some of the following symptoms for longer than about a monthyou could have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD):• The trauma keeps frightening you by repeated memories or nightmares

• You try hard to avoid thinking about the trauma and you avoid people, places or situationsthat remind you of the trauma

• You have negative changes in your thinking or feelings, like blaming yourself, having strongnegative beliefs about yourself or others, feeling cut off or distant from other people

• You become sensitive for danger so you fight more than before, you are always on thelookout for possible danger, you struggle to concentrate and you sleep poorly

You could take part in the Shared Roots study if:• You have been diagnosed with PTSD OR• You think you may have PTSD based on the

symptoms listed above

What’s involved?You travel in to Stellenbosch University medicalcampus next to Tygerberg hospital for 3 visitsAt the visits we ask you questions about your health,we do physical exams, we take bloods (likecholesterol and glucose) and we do a brain scanAfter each of the visits we give you money fortravelling costsAfter your visits you will get a report about yourgeneral health (like blood pressure and cholesterol)

paardgaande met uitstekende verdediging,het die weg gebaan vir sy sege van 32-13.

Wesley Krotz is without doubt one of thevery best ice hockey players in the country,proven by the fact the Canadian ParrySound Islanders team has acquired his ser-vices.

Bearing in mind, the 19-year-old fromMilnerton was already selected to repre-sent South Africa on a seniorlevel when he was 15.

“Between the age of 10 and13, I used to skate with mycousin at every public ses-sion because we enjoyed iceskating so much. One holidayin Johannesburg, we wereskating at Northgate Ice rinkand the manager approachedus and asked if we would liketo play ice hockey for them.

“On our return to CapeTown, my mother made en-quiries about ice hockey andwe immediately signed up forthe Learn to Play Academyon Sunday mornings.

I then joined the Penguins Club after at-tending the academy and the next monthwas selected to represent Western Provinceu.14s. That was the beginning and I neverlooked back,” says Wesley.

His accolades are astonishing. Represent-ing his country in Mexico in 2011 he wasvoted the best u.18 player of the tourna-ment. He received this honour again in Tur-key in 2013, possibly making him the onlynational ice hockey player to receive the

best player of the tournament award as botha junior and senior.

“I have been fortunate to play in Mexico,Turkey, Bulgaria, Spain and New Zealand.You learn a lot by travelling overseas andseeing how other countries play. The sportis also much bigger overseas and playedprofessionally. For example they train sixdays a week for up to five hours a day.

“That is one of the reasonswhy I am so excited to jointhe team in Canada. I want toplay well and work hard andbecome the best player I canpossibly be.

“It is my dream to becomea professional player and oneday become a coach and helpgrow the sport in our coun-try.

“The Canadian seasonstarts on 6 September and Iwill be flying out, God will-ing, on 4 or 5 September tostart this exciting journey inmy hockey career. ParrySound Islanders is a club

that attract scouts from all the pro teams,and this will give me the opportunity to getto the next level.
