FROM FR. QUINT On Tuesday I had the honor of serving as one of the three judges

for Patriotic Day at Xavier Elementary School. Students were asked

to dress in red, white, and blue in honor of the election. The kids did a

great job of digging through the closets and finding such clothes. We

saw bow ties, shoes, hats, glasses, and dresses with our national

colors. It probably seemed like Halloween all over again to the kids!

Our dedicated teachers and principal likewise got into the spirit by

dressing up. Then students were invited to vote for a presidential

candidate. There was a clear winner. Two ballots were left unmarked

– even kids can be undecided!

I’m writing this column on Tuesday night before the election returns

are completed. For now, I plan to stay up late and watch the returns.

I figure if I stayed up for the Cubs I can do it for the election ☺.

give him glory and honor by upholding his commands. • We welcome our Confirmation Class This Sunday, as they attend

their 3rd preparation session. Please keep them in prayer as they

grow in faith.

Hennessy ~ Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Dubuque are very strong! This school year we have nearly 10,000 students in our 52 schools and over 3,000 children in our early childhood programs. Students benefit from daily religious instruction, gospel values being infused through rigorous academic programs, and the safe and nurturing environment to foster the gifts of each child. These programs come with much hard work, sacrifice, and challenge. Local schools and parishes work diligently to recruit students, retain excellent staff, and provide innovative programming, all while trying to balance budgets, reduce parish subsidies, and keep tuition affordable.

STO ~ NOVEMBER 2016: What’s STO all about? It’s about supporting Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Dubuque and making the most out of your charitable contribution. If you file an Iowa Income Tax Return, your contributions to the Our Faith School Tuition Organization (STO) qualify for a 65% tax credit. That means for every $100 you donate, you receive an Iowa income tax credit $65, which reduces your Iowa tax liability by $65. Thus, a $1000 contribution reduces your Iowa tax liability by a whopping $650 AND the entire amount of your gift qualifies for federal deductibility. Go to www.ourfaithsto.org, or call the parish / school office or Dubuque Archdiocese, 800-876-3546. Be sure to check the giving thermometer at www.ourfaithsto.org for the most current giving information. Donations are ahead of a year ago at this time, so we anticipate reaching our goal early too. For our local cluster Catholic schools to benefit the most you will need to give earlier.

ADORATION of the Blessed Sacrament The Apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” We too desire to have a greater faith in Christ. And yet, how is faith supposed to increase if we do not take the time to be with our Lord? As our Psalm says, “Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the Lord who made us; for he is our God.”

For centuries, Catholics have come to worship, kneeling before the Lord, in Eucharistic adoration. Through this wonderful devotion, many have been led to a deeper, more intimate faith in Christ, including right here in the Spires of Faith. We plan to expand our practice of Eucharistic adoration in our cluster, offering Adoration Tuesday 8:00 am through Wednesday 8:00 am. Some have signed up but there are still many openings, especially the overnight hours. Check the sign-up sheets at your church or call the Dyersville office and see if you can fill an hour or half hour in Adoration. Let us together ask in prayer: “Jesus, increase our faith.”

IRA ~ Individuals 70 1/2 or older who are required to withdraw funds from his/her existing IRA can make direct contributions to our parishes and/or schools. These gifts are a great way for individuals to support the parish and school mission as well as provide great tax benefit for the individual. It is important to know that to qualify, the person must request his/her financial institution send the money directly to the parish or school. By doing so, they avoid paying in-come taxes on the distribution. This is very lucrative for those who do not rely on the IRA distribution for retirement income. But to qualify it is required the donor have the financial institution send the money directly to the parish and school. Please consult your tax preparer for more information.

BAPTISM CLASS for first time parents will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 7:00 pm in the Dyersville rectory. Please call your parish office to register. THANKSGIVING DINNER and all the trimmings will be served at 11:30 am at Dyersville Senior Meals on Wednesday, Nov. 16. Reservations needed by Nov. 14 to 875-2600.
