Sing praise to the L with the harp, with the harp and melodious song.
— Psalm 98:5
Pastor's Corner Beatitudes by Pope Francis - This year, on the Feast of All Saints, Pope Francis said that the saints' "ID card" can be found in the Beatitudes. And throughout the ages, they confronted the troubles and anxieties of our age with the spirit and love of Jesus. He said that new situations require new energy and a new com-mitment so he offered the following beatitudes for modern Christians: Blessed are those who remain faithful while enduring
evils inflicted on them by others and forgive them from their heart.
Blessed are those who look into the eyes of the aban-doned and marginalized and show them their closeness.
Blessed are those who see God in every person and strive to make others also discover Him.
Blessed are those who protect and care for our com-mon Home (our Mother Earth).
Blessed are those who renounce their own comfort in order to help others.
Blessed are those who pray and work for full com-munion between Christians.
And the Pope concludes, "All these are messengers of God's mercy and tenderness. Surely they will receive from Him their merited reward." The Pope shared this beautiful insight on the occasion of his visit to Sweden for the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. Replacing our Carpet - I'm not quite sure how old our carpet is. A long time parishioner said it may be as old as 40 years. In any event, our carpet is worn and in need of replacement. Encouraged by a couple of generous donors, we'd like to replace it before Christmas. We have scheduled to begin the work on December 12 and it should be completed by the end of the week. If you'd like to make a contribution to the Carpet replacement, please make a check to St. Anne Church and include on the memo line, "Carpet." Thank you! Save the Date - Our Archdiocesan Annual Appeal is up to 86%. We were assessed $54,292 to support the work of the Archdiocese from training Seminarians, on-going education for teachers and catechists, ad-ministrative work like HR and Property Support, to Chaplains for hospitals and prisons. We only have about $8K more to go. And if you're able to join me at the 1% level ($543), or it's younger sibling 0.5% level ($272) or higher, we'd like to invite you and a significant other to a New Year's Eve dinner at Mori-arty Hall, following the Saturday's vigil mass. Save the date and invitations will soon follow. Gratefully, Fr. Dan
GOD’S HEALING JUSTICE An old expression holds that the sun-warmed stone heals. Perhaps. But Malachi explains that only dark, sunless days are in store for those who do not find a place for God in their lives. Conversely, he tells us that the warmth and light of God’s healing justice await those who fear the Lord. That’s a pretty com-forting notion—especially now in the already short and growing even shorter days of November. It’s the sun-warmed stone, and then some. Paul speaks to us of justice as well, but points out that it is not a passive thing. To be treated justly, we need to do our fair share. If we are diligent and per-severe we will be rewarded with and by the fruits of our labor. Lastly, Luke, too, tells us to persevere—in faith, this time—and our lives will be secure in God regardless of how we are treated by our enemies. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION With Thanksgiving approaching, we think of the quest of the Puritans who arrived on the Mayflower from their first exile in Leyden, Holland. Like the Catholics of England, they were religious dissenters who suffered penalties for not participating in the worship life of the established church. The Catholics established monasteries, schools, and convents on the continent to assure the vigor of their faith’s intel-lectual and spiritual life. The Puritans fled to the toler-ant Netherlands with similar hopes of preserving their way of life, but were unable to adapt to Dutch ways. There were Catholics who made a similar colonial journey. The hero of the story is George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, the former Secretary of State of Brit-ain and a Catholic. He proposed that King Charles I establish a proprietary colony that he would own and rule, named Maryland in honor of the Catholic Queen Henrietta Maria. George Calvert died unexpectedly in the midst of this project, but his son Cecil faithfully carried out his father’s wishes. Maryland became a symbol of freedom for wealthy recusant English fami-lies, as well as for the poor who held to the Catholic faith despite great hardship. From the start, the colo-ny was open to Protestants and Catholics equally, and the seeds of the religious freedom so dear to the American spirit were sown with the first colonists in 1634. —Rev.
