Reflecting on the Readings

I don’t like apocalyptic writing. I struggle to identify with the “end times” message and thus find myself tuning out anyone who preaches about doom’s day or classifies current events as signs the end is near. Growing up in the South, the message I received about the end times was heavily focused on division and coupled with a hyperawareness of our sinfulness. We, at the ripe age of 12 and 13, had better be prepared, for we know not the hour when God will come and save his few chosen ones to spend eternity with Him in heaven. All sinners will be left behind for a life of despair and destruction.

Who are the elect?

I sit with deep sadness as the picture of the drowned three-year-old Syrian refugee floods news outlets. We politicize the migration, we analyze the economic and social impact these refugees will have in countries where they have been offered refuge and we offer judgment upon the people, systems and countries who have not offered such. Meanwhile here in the states we talk of building bigger walls to “keep our borders safe.”

Who’s in? Who’s out? Enough already.

Like the apostles, I think we are totally missing the point. Jesus calls us to be tender like the fig tree. I can only imagine that God weeps as he sees his sons and daughters the world over so divided and seemingly choosing power and privilege over mercy and forgiveness. Need we be reminded of a youthful couple by the names of Joseph and Mary who fled dangerous circumstances only to find accommodation among animals?

A Woman Campus Minister

Questions for Reflection:

What does the word tender mean to you? Where are the places, relationships, experiences in your life where it is easy to be tender?

Conversely, where are the places, relationships, experiences where it is challenging to be tender?

Looking for more reflections like this one?

Watch for our weekly blog #faithsharingfridays series online or you

can find them on the SMSP news-page: http://www.stmarystudentparish.org/category/faith-sharing-fridays/

The blog will include the upcoming Sunday readings, a reflection written by a

St. Mary parishioner, as well as a connection to art. This blog is a great way to

read and reflect on the scripture before Sunday mass and better incorporate

the Word into daily life. It will continue through November 20th.

ST. MARY STUDENT PARISH ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN

At the Intersection of Faith & Science:

Astronomy, God, and the Search for Elegance

Sunday, November 22, at 2:30 pm

St. Francis of Assisi Parish

You’re invited to attend the presentation on Astronomy, God,

and the Search for Elegance by Brother Guy Consolmagno,

Director of the Vatican Observatory

A lot of people might be surprised to hear that the Vatican has its

own observatory. That's one of the reasons we have it: to

surprise people. With the observatory, we remind people that

the Church supports and embraces science. We are not afraid of

the truth; we actively seek it. St. Paul reminds us that God

reveals himself in the things He has created. The Vatican

Observatory was first founded by Pope Leo XIII in 1891.

Scientific theories must do more than merely satisfy the data;

they must do so in a way that is (to use a term much favored by

mathematicians) "elegant." By looking closely at a handful of

astronomical images, we'll explore the way that one proceeds

from an emotional appreciation of the beauty of the stars and

planets, to a deeper understanding that satisfies both reason and

emotion. Ultimately, this link between "elegance" and rational

truth has profound theological implications.

No charge, but you will have the opportunity to make a free will

offering. A light reception will follow the event.

Contact the St. Francis Parish Office at 734-769-2550. Infant Baptism Class Upcoming classes: Nov 30 & Dec 14

We offer a baptism class in both English and Spanish once a month on a Monday night from 7-8 PM. Information packets are available in the Parish Office and should be picked up at least a week prior to the class date.

PRAYER FOR OUR BELOVED DEAD

Almighty God and Father,

it is our certain faith that your Son,

who died on the cross,

was raised from the dead,

the first fruits of all who have fallen asleep.

Grant that you through this mystery

your servants,

who have gone to their rest in Christ,

may share in the joy of his resurrection.

I ask this through Christ our Lord.

AMEN.

Liturgy 101

St. Mary Student Parish is taking a deeper look at the way we

celebrate the Mass. Each week in the bulletin (and at

stmarystudentparish.org) we will explore the meaning and origins

of the Sacrament that is central to who we are as Catholics.

Liturgy of the Word

(The Gospel Acclamation and Gospel)

In preparation for the Gospel, we stand and sing

Alleluia, which is a Hebrew word, meaning “Praise

God.” Just as in the Introductory Rite, when we saw

a procession that helped us transition from the

outside world to Mass, we now process with the

Gospel Book to help us transition and prepare to

hear from Jesus himself.

We stand, out of respect, and prepare to hear the

very words and life of Jesus. When the presider

begins the proclamation, he says these words:

“The Lord be with You.”

Response: “And with your spirit.”

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to….

Response: “Glory to you, O Lord.”

We also respond with a ritual gesture, tracing the

cross on our foreheads, lips and heart – reminding

ourselves to let the words of Christ remain in our

minds, on our lips and in our hearts.

When the Word of Christ has been proclaimed, the

priest or deacon shows reverence by kissing the

book of Gospels.

(Adapted From Walk Through the Mass, Todd Williamson and Nancy

Polacek, 2012, Archdiocese of Chicago and from Mass 101, Liturgy

and Life, by Emily Strand, MA (Liguori Publications)

The proclamation of the Gospel embodies this

sacramental encounter between God and us

most completely. This Gospel Word is Christ,

the Wisdom of God incarnate, come among us

to instruct and save. – Emily Strand
