The Election and the Will of God I write this article on Tuesday, November 8, which happens to be my brother John’s birthday (Happy Birthday, bro), so I have not learned who has won yet.

Four years ago, the day after the election, I was in my car running an errand, and surfing the dial on the

radio. I came upon a talk show, conservative in nature, with the host bemoaning the reelection of the president and what went wrong for the Romney campaign. A caller tried to take solace with the idea it was the will of God because we have not suffered enough to really wake up to the reality of our waywardness. Really? The will of God? Really?

The next day at Bible Study, one of the nicest ladies in the parish mentioned after she voted, she prayed that God’s will be done with the election, so, the results of the election must be the will of God, even though the Marriage Amendment was defeated. The will of God huh? We can try to make sense of what happened in this election, why our side of the issue lost, but to pin the blame on God and say it was God’s will, I do not think so. I certainly hope I was not too hard on her when I admonished her.

Let me make this perfectly clear: God’s will is not determined by majority vote. It was not God’s will that President Obama won reelection. It would not have been God’s will if Mitt Romney won the election. And was certainly not God’s will that the Marriage Amendment was defeated. People do not get to determine God’s will and God’s will does not assent to majority rule. God’s will is God’s will. The election results are that of the majority of the voter’s will, fallen human beings will, which may or may not coincide with God’s will.

To say that this was God’s will would mean that somehow God programmed enough human beings to vote a certain way. Here lies the folly of that type of thinking. One of the greatest and most dangerous gifts God has given each human being is the gift of free will, the gift of free choice. If we did not have the gift of free will, the Marriage amendment would have passed by a unanimous decision. For that matter, there would be no need to waste our time with such an issue because everyone would be programmed love and obey all of God’s commands. There would be no selfishness, no sin. Of course, one would question the wisdom of God giving us free will, when clearly all too often human beings neglect God’s will and God’s love. How can that possibly be the greater good?

God chose the most dangerous route in giving us the gift of free will as the greater good. After all, is it really love if we really have no choice in the matter? How can there be any satisfaction of victory if the result has already been determined? There is no joy when there is no choice. There is no striving to be holy if there is no choice. There is no love if there is no choice. Of course, the wrong choice is sin, but God chose the dangerous path of love. Our sin is what is expressed at the Easter Vigil when the Exultet is sung: “O happy fault, O necessary sin of Adam, which gained for us so great a Redeemer!”—TB

Stewards Among Us

Jeff & Valerie Dockter Family

Jeff works at Amesbury Truth in Cannon Falls and Valerie works at the Dakota County Attorney’s Office. Their daughter Leah is a dental assistant with Rochester Community Dental and is making wedding plans, soon to be married to DJ Buck in June. Zach is a junior at UW River Falls, studying Geology and Math.

Val has been a parishioner of St. Pius her entire life, minus a couple years when Jeff and her lived in Lakeville for a couple years. Jeff has been a member for over 20 years and Leah & Zach—the only church they have ever known.

Valerie is active as a teacher for Faith Formation, Eucharistic Minister and treasurer for the Feed My Starving Children community event. Jeff was an usher along with being a greeter with the family and Fall Festival, FMSC volunteers. Both kids have been altar servers and Eucharistic Ministers. They also enjoy volunteering with other community groups/events.

Val’s parents taught her the importance of service in the church, so Jeff and Val have continued this discipline in service and passing this value down to Leah and Zach. “It gives us joy to serve in this way. We have also met many great people and have gained wonderful friends from being involved. Just do it. Serving is very gratifying and is the reason why we’re here. Being involved allows you to help people in need. Making friends along the way is an added blessing.”

Many years ago, my wife and I traveled to New York City with friends of ours from South Carolina. They had never seen a Broadway show before so we landed some seats to see "Les Misérables." It was a perfect night filled with excitement, fun, and a sense that the Big Apple was a magical place.

That is until we started walking back to the ferry station so we could get to our car in New Jersey. I had been to the city several times, so as we proceeded to walk down some streets that perhaps were not the best choices in some minds, I had little fear. But for our friends, suddenly prayer seemed essential to our survival. The pace of the walk increased, as did the pace of their beating hearts. Of course, we did get to the ferry without an altercation and all was well. We laughed as we created an extra memory from our adventure.

As Christians, we will walk through hostile territory and darkened streets throughout our lives. The dangers that surround us will be real and will provide us with causes for caution and concern. The defense we try to mount for ourselves will never be enough for our victory. It is the Father that will give us the wisdom to refute and resist our enemies. It is the Father that will prepare a defense for us, one that no power will prevail against. But we must persevere, trust in God, and surrender all to him. Then we will never need to surrender to anyone or anything ever again, and one day, we will find the streets that were dark and scary will be turned to gold and filled with the Light. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS © Liturgical Publications Inc

“America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has aggravated the derogation of the father’s role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts—a child—as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience. It has nominally accorded mothers unfettered

dominion over the independent lives of their physically dependent sons and daughters. And, in granting this unconscionable power, it has exposed many women to unjust and selfish demands from their husbands or other sexual partners. Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being’s entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleaser of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign.” Saint Teresa of Calcutta
