NOVEMBER 15, 2020 | 33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME God gives us the gift of His very self and asks us to invest it. Investing God’s greatest gift of Himself wisely, allows God’s kingdom to grow and flourish. God trusts us with this pearl of great price in hopes that it will produce abundant fruit. While God’s gift of self is realized in the gifts of faith, hope, and love, they are not meant to be solely for personal benefit. They are intended to be shared and are at the heart of Jesus’ blueprint for happiness, the Beatitudes. When we properly invest God’s greatest gift, His most treasured possession, we invest in the wellbeing of all of our broth- ers and sisters and the world in which we live. We take up most seriously our call to be stewards and properly manage, not only our own affairs, but the affairs of those around and before us. God has put tremendous confidence in us. Do we have that same confidence in God? We often go the extra mile and put in the additional effort when it comes to those concerns closest to us: our families, friends, careers, home and securities. But when it comes to things that are not as close to us, we can become lax and less conscientious. Tending to God’s treasure requires a great deal of focus and persistent hard work. It demands that I see the bigger picture, God’s picture, in which self-sacrifice is a given as we labor for the establishment of God’s kingdom, God’s vision. Fear and a lack of trust can loom large, however. We are afraid of letting go of what is “mine” and apprehensive of jeopardizing what we have in order to venture into something bigger and more promising. Fear and a lack of trust serve no purpose in God’s kingdom. They benefit neither the person nor God. What is required is a courageous resolve that produces the fortitude necessary to stay the course and do what God is asking. Doing all in our power to cultivate the seeds of faith, hope, and love in our world, working diligently to put all of our relationships in proper order, becoming attentive to systems and ideologies that hurt and oppress people, being mindful of injustice, and laboring on behalf of the poor and the needy are at the core of what each of us is asked to do. It is how we invest God’s most pre- cious gift wisely. If persistent, alert and attentive, then life will gradually improve around us, there will be greater peace and we will experience joy. ©LPi

PRINCIPAL’S REFLECTION

Being a steward permeates in everything we do; in what we say, how we

act.It is infused in our prayer and relationship with Jesus.

Stewardship is the only way of life for a disciple of Christ. “Becoming a

disciple of Jesus Christ leads naturally to the practice of stewardship.

These linked realities, discipleship and stewardship, then make up the fab-

ric of a Christian life.

Living a stewardship way of life in 2020, in this year of COVID 19, we are

being asked to step out of our comfort zone to follow Jesus as the best

steward we can be at this moment in time.

This weekend, November 1415, 2020, is Stewardship Weekend. Sharing, Service, and Prayer will be

combined. You will receive an email with links to the commitment form. You can fill the forms out and

submit directly from the website. For those who do not have email, you will receive the forms in the

mail.

Please return all forms by December 6.

As Bishop Robert Morneau said, “Stewardship is what I do after I say, “I believe.”

Thank you for your generosity of sharing, service and prayer!

DOWNTON ABBEYDOWNTON ABBEYDOWNTON ABBEYDOWNTON ABBEY

I share this with a tinge of embarrassment, but I've been rewatching (yes, a second time) Downton Abbey with Laura. We are in the early seasons set during World War I. It has caused me to reflect on suffering and sacrifice a great deal. These extremely young men go off into arguably the bloodiest war we have seen in the modern era. And yet, for many of the soldiers we get to know, the biggest battle they face is their

internal struggle. Downton becomes a hospital of sorts for the wounded, and we observe the family battle their own internal wounds and fears as the soldiers suf-fer from their war wounds. Interestingly, and most profoundly, this external suffer-ing provokes deep reflection for each of the family members on their own anxie-ties, hurts, and anger. Which battle is greater? This battle in the heart and internal pain, or the battles in the trenches?

During this time of pandemic, we have a medical battle going on. Likewise, we have this medical crisis evoking issues of mental health, insecurities, and well-founded anxieties. In a conversation with a children’s psychologist I had last week, the doctor shared with me that she has never seen so much suffering, and that this time is rousing unprecedented responses in children and families. All of this amidst deeply political and scientific questions of what the right way to re-spond might be.

As Downton Abbey concludes, we see real life unfold. Real external and inter-nal pain resolves but never completely goes away. Questions of self-worth and true happiness are tempered but are not resolved. In some ways, it is this pain and this drama that brings life meaning. This struggle to be at peace with oneself despite the melodrama of the heart is at the very center truth of life. This moment we are in now is no different.

The episode I watched last night ended with Anna and Mr. Bates, amidst some drama the likes of day-time television, kneeling to pray. And although there was no end in sight, and a certainty of more pain to come, they knelt in prayer. No words were shared, but rather stillness. I pray each of us finds this same stillness and peace amidst the turmoil of 2020.

In Christ,

Andrew Mulloy

Dear Family of St. John the Baptist,

Thank you to all who participated in our Annual Par-ish Meeting after 10:00 a.m. Mass last Sunday. Over 40 persons attended, 27 households live streamed, and over 400 views have been enjoyed on Facebook and YouTube. I love the interest shown by our parish community and, true to form, the good questions and thankfulness expressed. Special thanks to our presenters: Michelle Dahlke (Finances), Dan Tooley (Mission Plan), Andrew Mulloy (School),

Sarah Wulf (one by One Campaign), and Diana Ball (Prayer Builders). The meeting ended with our annual Trustee election. This year the Treasurer-Trustee position was being voted upon and Jeff Taylor (incumbent) was running unopposed. I am happy to report that Jeff was elected unani-mously with a vote of 39-0! Congratulations, Jeff, and thank you for your willingness to serve our community in this way, God willing, for the next two years.

With gratitude and thanksgiving,

Fr. Jim

The first prayer that Fr. Jim shared with me after he arrived at St. John’s was The Surrender Novena. He prayed day 1 with me, and I felt a weight lifted and tremendous peace. I have prayed it every day since.

The Surrender Novena is from the words spoken from God to a Neapolitan priest, Fr. Don Dolindo Ruotolo (1882–1970). In this novena, Jesus speaks to Don Dolindo, a prophet in our time, and to you about total abandonment to God.

To pray the novena, begin with day 1. After the first part of the prayer, pray 10 times: “O Jesus, I sur-render myself to You, take care of everything!” Conclude with a prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary:

“Mother, I am yours now and forever. Through you and with you I always want to belong completely to Jesus.”

A novena is for nine days, but I pray this and many other novenas every day. I hope this beautiful prayer is as much a blessing to you as it has been to me. (The Surrender Novena prayer can be found on the next page of the bulletin.)

Blessings,

Karen Buchinger

THE SURRENDER NOVENATHE SURRENDER NOVENATHE SURRENDER NOVENATHE SURRENDER NOVENA Day 1Day 1Day 1Day 1

Why do you confuse yourselves by worry-ing? Leave the care of your affairs to me and everything will be peaceful. I say to you in truth that every act of true, blind, complete surrender to me produces the effect that you desire and resolves all diffi-cult situations.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 2Day 2Day 2Day 2

Surrender to me does not mean to fret, to be upset, or to lose hope, nor does it mean offering to me a worried prayer asking me to follow you and change your worry into prayer. It is against this surrender, deeply against it, to worry, to be nervous and to desire to think about the consequences of anything.

It is like the confusion that children feel when they ask their mother to see to their needs, and then try to take care of those needs for themselves so that their childlike efforts get in their mother’s way. Surren-der means to placidly close the eyes of the soul, to turn away from thoughts of tribula-tion and to put yourself in my care, so that only I act, saying, “You take care of it.”

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 3Day 3Day 3Day 3

How many things I do when the soul, in so much spiritual and material need, turns to me, looks at me and says to me, “You take care of it,” then closes its eyes and rests. In pain you pray for me to act, but that I act in the way you want. You do not turn to me, instead, you want me to adapt your ideas. You are not sick people who ask the doctor to cure you, but rather sick people who tell the doctor how to. So do not act this way, but pray as I taught you in the

Our Father: “Hallowed be thy Name,” that is, be glorified in my need. “Thy kingdom come,” that is, let all that is in us and in the world be in accord with your kingdom. “Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven,” that is, in our need, decide as you see fit for our temporal and eternal life. If you say to me truly: “Thy will be done,” which is the same as saying: “You take care of it,” I will intervene with all my omnipotence, and I will resolve the most difficult situations.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 4Day 4Day 4Day 4

You see evil growing instead of weakening? Do not worry. Close your eyes and say to me with faith: “Thy will be done, You take care of it.” I say to you that I will take care of it, and that I will intervene as does a doc-tor and I will accomplish miracles when they are needed. Do you see that the sick person is getting worse? Do not be upset, but close your eyes and say, “You take care of it.” I say to you that I will take care of it, and that there is no medicine more power-ful than my loving intervention. By my love, I promise this to you.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 5Day 5Day 5Day 5

And when I must lead you on a path differ-ent from the one you see, I will prepare you; I will carry you in my arms; I will let you find yourself, like children who have fallen asleep in their mother’s arms, on the other bank of the river. What troubles you and hurts you immensely are your reason, your thoughts and worry, and your desire at all costs to deal with what afflicts you.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 6Day 6Day 6Day 6

You are sleepless; you want to judge every-thing, direct everything and see to every-thing and you surrender to human strength, or worse—to men themselves, trusting in their intervention—this is what hinders my words and my views. Oh, how much I wish from you this surrender, to help you; and how I suffer when I see you so agitated! Satan tries to do exactly this: to agitate you and to remove you from my protection and to throw you into the jaws of human initia-tive. So, trust only in me, rest in me, surren-der to me in everything.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 7Day 7Day 7Day 7

I perform miracles in proportion to your full surrender to me and to your not thinking of yourselves. I sow treasure troves of graces when you are in the deepest poverty.

No person of reason, no thinker, has ever performed miracles, not even among the saints. He does divine works whosoever surrenders to God. So don’t think about it any more, because your mind is acute and for you it is very hard to see evil and to trust in me and to not think of yourself. Do this for all your needs, do this, all of you, and you will see great continual silent miracles. I will take care of things, I promise this to you.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 8Day 8Day 8Day 8

Close your eyes and let yourself be car-ried away on the flowing current of my grace; close your eyes and do not think of the present, turning your thoughts away from the future just as you would from temptation. Repose in me, believ-ing in my goodness, and I promise you by my love that if you say, “You take care of it,” I will take care of it all; I will console you, liberate you and guide you.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 9Day 9Day 9Day 9

Pray always in readiness to surrender, and you will receive from it great peace and great rewards, even when I confer on you the grace of immolation, of re-pentance, and of love. Then what does suffering matter? It seems impossible to you? Close your eyes and say with all your soul, “Jesus, you take care of it.” Do not be afraid, I will take care of things and you will bless my name by humbling yourself. A thousand prayers cannot equal one single act of surrender, re-member this well. There is no novena more effective than this.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)
