The Annual Giving Tree

This weekend we once again launch a

longstanding tradition of holiday

sharing at St. Rose, The GivingTree,

sponsored by the Women’s Guild. In

the alcove on the left side of the church

you will see our tree.

Each ornament on the tree describes a

gift requested by one of the local

agencies we sponsor at Christmas. We ask

parishioners to take an ornament, purchase and wrap

that gift, place the ornament on top of your

package, (the color lets us know where to deliver it)

and place the gift under the tree when you return to

church.

The last day for placing your gift under the tree will

be Sunday, December 8th. NO PACKAGES CAN

BE ACCEPTED AFTER DECEMBER 8TH, IN

ORDER TO HAVE THEM DELIVERED IN

TIME FOR THE CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES

AT THE AGENCIES.

We are amazed by your generosity each year for this

project, and we appreciate all that you do.

El Arbol Anual de Donaciones

Este fin de semana, una vez más, lanzamos

una larga tradición de compartir las fiestas

en St. Rose, The Giving Tree, patrocinado

por el Gremio de Mujeres. En la entrada

del lado izquierdo de la iglesia verás

nuestro árbol.

Cada adorno en el árbol describe un regalo

solicitado por una de las agencias locales

que patrocinamos en Navidad. Pedimos a los

feligreses que tomen un adorno, compren y envuelvan

ese regalo, coloquen el adorno en la parte superior de

su paquete (el color nos permite saber dónde

entregarlo) y coloquen el regalo debajo del árbol

cuando regresen a la iglesia.

El último día para colocar su regalo debajo del

árbol será el domingo 8 de diciembre. NO SE

ACEPTARAN PAQUETES DESPUÉS DEL 8 DE

DICIEMBRE, PARA QUE SE ENTREGEN A

TIEMPO PARA LAS ACTIVIDADES DE

NAVIDAD EN LAS AGENCIAS.

Santa María, Nuestra Señora,

La Madre de la Divina Providencia

Este fin de semana, conmemoramos la

fiesta de la Virgen María, Madre de la

Divina Providencia. La fiesta actual es el 19

de noviembre - el día en el cual Cristóbal

Colon llegó a la Isla Borinquen.

La devoción a la Virgen de la Divina

Providencia se fundó en la intercesión que

la Madre de Jesús, María, hizo en la boda

de Cana (Juan 2:1-11). La devoción

particular se originó en Italia, y se extendió

a Francia y España. La devoción fue traída

a Puerto Rico a principios de la década de

1850 por los Padres Serenes y promovida por el

obispo de San Juan, Monseñor Gil Tomas, originario

de Cataluña, España. Nuestra Señora de la

Providencia fue declarada patrona de Puerto Rico por

el Papa Pablo VI el 19 de noviembre de 1969.

Si bien podemos tener nuestras intenciones

personales, me gustaría invitarlos a orar por todos los

damnificados del huracán María (2017). Según un

artículo de New York Times (09.12.19), había entre

2650 a 3290 puertorriqueños, ciudadanos de los

Estados Unidos, que fallecieron en el periodo que

siguió al huracán. El mismo artículo notó que el

numero de escuelas ha bajado de 1515 a 855. Las

áreas más impactadas siguen siendo del campo.

+++ Oh Santa María, Madre de la Divina Providencia,

patrona de Borinquen, intercede por nosotros y por

todos los damnificados del huracán María para que

Dios nos de la fuerza para acompañarlos, buscar

maneras para aliviar sus sufrimientos y luchar

derrotar la corrupción que ha impedido la

recuperación que nuestros hermanos merecen.

Saint Mary, Our Lady, The

Mother of Divine Providence

This weekend, we commemorate the

feast of the Virgin Mary, Mother of

Divine Providence. The actual feast is

November 19th - the day Christopher

Columbus arrived on Puerto Rico.

Devotion to Our Lady of Divine

Providence is biblically based on the

intercession that the Mother of Jesus,

Mary, made at the wedding of Cana

(John 2:1-11). The particular devotion

originated in Italy, and spread to France

and Spain. The devotion was brought to

Puerto Rico in the early 1850s by the Servite Fathers

and promoted by the Bishop of San Juan, Gil Tomas,

originally from Catalonia, Spain. Our Lady of

Providence was declared patron of Puerto Rico by

Pope Paul VI on November 19, 1969.

While we may have our personal intentions, I would

like to invite us to pray for all those affected by

Hurricane Maria (2017). According to a New York

Times article (09.12.19), there were between 2650

and 3290 Puerto Ricans, citizens of the United States,

who died in the period following the hurricane. The

same article noted that the number of schools has

dropped from 1515 to 855. The most impacted areas

are from the countryside.

+++ Oh Saint Mary, Mother of Divine Providence,

patron of Puerto Rico, intercede for us and for

all the victims of Hurricane María so that God

will give us the strength to accompany them, find

ways to alleviate their sufferings and fight the

corruption that has prevented the recovery

our brothers and sisters deserve.

30° Aniversario del Martirio

de los Jesuitas Al comenzar la década del 80, durante la guerra civil en El

Salvador, San Oscar Romero, arzobispo y mártir, fue

asesinado porque denunció la opresión del gobierno contra

los campesinos que buscaban una vida mejor y digna. De

hecho el día anterior de su martirio, San Oscar Romero

mandó a que los militares desobedecieran los órdenes de

oprimir al pueblo. Fue asesinado mientras celebraba la

Santa Misa.

En la madrugada del 16 de noviembre de 1989,

en medio de una ofensiva guerrillera sobre San

Salvador, efectivos del ahora proscrito batallón

Atlacatl asesinaron a seis sacerdotes y a dos de

sus colaboradoras, madre e hija, en el campus de

la Universidad Centroamericana (UCA).

Estos jesuitas asesinados se habían destacado por

promover una solución pacífica al conflicto

armado salvadoreño y por denunciar las injusticias sociales

hacia los grupos minoritarios del país centroamericano. Por

su liderazgo espiritual a favor del pueblo y su voz de

denuncia, resultaban incómodos para el poder político y

militar de la época.

Debido a la indignación internacional por la matanza de

tantas personas inocentes, se iniciaron las negociaciones de

paz que resultaron en el acuerdo de paz 1992.

“Teacher….what sign will there

be when all these things are about

to happen?"

Jesus challenged us to “read the signs of

the times.” The challenge here is not so

much to have an intellectual insight into a

particular event as it is to see the finger of

God in that event.

John of the Cross says: “The language of

God is the experience that God writes into

our lives.” To read the signs of the times

is to look at each event of our lives and

ask: “What is God saying through this

event?”

Jesus invites to a vibrant life as his disciples. As such, we

cannot tolerate or settle for this world as it is today, full of

hatred, tears, injustice, hunger, lies and violence. Anyone

who does nothing to change this world doesn't believe in a

better one. Whoever does not fight injustice does not want

"new heavens and a new land where justice dwells"

(1 Peter 3:13). Those who do not work to free human

beings from suffering do not believe in a new and happy

world.

"Maestro.…¿cuál será la señal de

que ya está a punto de suceder?"

Jesús nos anima a "leer los signos del

tiempo." El desafío aquí no es tener una

visión intelectual de un acontecimiento en

particular, sino ver el dedo de Dios en ese

evento.

San Juan de la Cruz dice: "El lenguaje de

Dios es la experiencia que Dios escribe en

nuestra vida." Leer los signos del tiempo es

mirar cada acontecimiento de nuestra vida y

preguntar: "¿Qué está diciendo Dios a través

de este acontecimiento?"

Jesús nos invita a tener una vida vibrante como sus

discípulos. Como tal, no podemos tolerar ni conformarnos

con este mundo como lo que es hoy, lleno de odio,

lágrimas, injusticia, hambre, mentiras y violencia.

Cualquiera que no haga nada para cambiar este mundo no

cree en uno mejor. Quien no luche contra la injusticia no

quiere "nuevos cielos y una tierra nueva donde mora la

justicia" (1 Pedro 3:13). Aquellos que no trabajan para

liberar a los seres humanos del sufrimiento no creen en un

mundo nuevo y feliz.

30th Anniversary of the Martyrdom

of the Jesuits At the beginning of the 1980s, during the civil war in El

Salvador, St. Oscar Romero, archbishop and martyr, was

assassinated because he denounced the oppression of the

government against peasants seeking a better and dignified

life. In fact, the day before his martyrdom, St. Oscar Romero

commanded the military to disobey orders to oppress, to kill

innocent civilians. On March 24,1980, he was killed while

celebrating Holy Mass.

In the early morning of November 16, 1989, in

the midst of a guerrilla offensive on San

Salvador, government troops murdered the six

priests and two of their collaborators, mother and

daughter, on the campus of the University of

Central American (UCA).

These murdered Jesuits had stood out for

promoting a peaceful solution to the Salvadoran

armed conflict and for denouncing social injustices towards

minority groups in the Central American country. Because

of their spiritual leadership on behalf of the people and their

voice of denunciation, they were uncomfortable for the

political and military power of the time.

Due to international outrage over the slaughter of so many

innocent people, peace negotiations began that resulted in

the 1992 peace agreement.

up to 3 months old. Items like

pampers, clothing, blankets, etc.

We do not accept toys, cereal, or baby food. All gifts

will be donated to The Birthright Center. There will be

a baby bassinet at the entrance of the church for those

who wish to donate but are unable to attend.

español. La entrada es completamente gratis.

Solamente te pedimos que traigas un regalito (sin

forrar) para un bebé recién nacido hasta los 3 meses de

edad. Artículos como pañales, ropita, sabanitas, etc.

No se aceptan juguetes, cereales, ni comida de bebé.

Todos los regalos serán donados a Birthright. Habrá

una cunita de bebé en la entrada de la iglesia para

aquellos que desean donar pero no pueden asistir a

este evento.
