Fr. Bob’s Briefs In the Gospel this Sunday, we hear Jesus tell His followers of persecution to come. “You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” However, for most of us in the comfort of our homes, these words of Jesus regarding persecution do not resonate with us. Our lives, the lives of our loved ones, are not physically threatened for being Christian, for believing in Christ. Yet, persecution of Christians has always been part of the Church’s story, from the very beginning until today. For most Christians today, we are ignorant of Church history, and do not know the persecutions that early Christians suffered for being a follower of Christ. The early Christians learned very quickly that they will be hated and persecuted for being a Christians. The painting that we see is a moving image depicting the persecution of early Christians that we hear from the Roman historian Tacitus (55-117 AD). Tacitus writes in his history that Nero laid the blame on Christians for starting the great fire in Rome, in order to cover up the truth that Nero had set fire to Rome. “Therefore, in order to abolish that rumor, Nero falsely accused and

executed with the most exquisite punishments those people called Christians. The originator of the name, Christ, was executed as a criminal by the procurator Pontius Pilate during the reign of Tiberius; and though repressed, this destructive superstition erupted again. First those were seized who admitted their faith, and then, using the information they provided, a vast multitude were convicted, not so much for the crime of burning the city, but for hatred of the human race. And perishing they were additionally made into sports: they were killed by dogs by having the hides of beasts attached to them, or they were nailed to crosses or set aflame, and, when the daylight passed away, they were used as nighttime lamps. Nero gave his own gardens for this spectacle and performed a Circus game, in the habit of a charioteer mixing with the plebs or driving about the race-course.” Persecution of Christians is not something that exists only in the past, in the pages of history. For most Christians today, we are unaware of the persecutions that Christians are suffering for being a follower of Christ today. There are many Christians around the world, our sisters and brothers in Christ, who are suffering persecution for believing in Christ now. Several hundred million Christians around the globe are currently suffering. They are real, and they are our brothers and sisters in Christ. Estimates are that approximately eleven Christians are martyred each hour. The list of afflictions and cruelties endured by these Christians is unimaginable, and often indescribable: amputation, bombing, crucifixion, displacement, flogging, kidnapping, murder, imprisonment, rape, slavery, and torture.

Catholic author John Allen Jr. wrote a book entitled The Global War on Christians: Dispatches from the Front Lines of Anti-Christian Persecution (2013). He cites reliable studies which estimate that more than 45 million Christians have been martyred in the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first, most of them falling victim either to Communism or Fascism. He also cites human-rights experts who estimate that 80 percent of all acts of religious discrimination in the world today are directed against Christians. Using data from Open Doors' World Watch List, Allen delineates the countries where Christian believers suffer most for their faith. While Muslim-majority nations are prominent among them, many other nations persecute as well, particularly in Asia and Eastern Europe, many among countries belonging to the former Soviet Union. Whether in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, or Eastern Europe, many Christians are living through a time of great tribulation. Allen says it is a mistake to conclude that Islam is the lone force in the global war on Christians. To be sure, Christians in the Middle East and the Islamic parts of Africa are treated as second-class citizens in their societies, and many suffer much brutality, but in certain Asian countries such as Sri Lanka and Vietnam, radical Buddhism regards Christianity as an unwelcome "foreign" influence. In India, tens of millions of Christians carry the stigma of multiple forms of discrimination because of the influence of radical Hinduism. Christians living in North Korea suffer brutally. Yes, Jesus’ words about persecution are true.

While persecution may not affect us, it does affect many members of the Church. If some of the members of the Body of Christ are affected by persecution, then it affects all of us, the whole Body of Christ. This is why it is very important for us never to forget about persecuted Christians. We must always pray for our sisters and brothers in Christ, and help them and support them. Please pray for the Church Suffering, all persecuted Christians around the world, and for all the souls in Purgatory. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us.

Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Informes Padre Bob

El autor católico John Allen Jr. escribió un libro titulado The Global War on Christians: Dispatches from the Front Lines of Persecution Anti-Christian (2013).

W dzisiejszej Ewangelii, Jezus ostrzega Swoich uczniów przed nadchodzącymi prześladowaniami: „I z powodu mojego imienia będziecie w nienawiści u wszystkich.

Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!

In the grade 2- 3 division: Joaquin, Josue, and Matthew all finished with 3 wins and 1 loss tying for second place. Likewise, in the 6 – 8 division Sammy finished in second place with a 3 – 1 record. Chris, while not placing in the top 5, did have 2 wins to contribute in bringing how a FIRST PLACE TROPHY for our 6 – 8 team. With their strong play our 2 – 3team also finished in FIRST PLACE by a large margin over the second place team. Have a great week! God bless. Lawrence Manetti, Principal
