In some suburbs big egos bask in the heatcaused by constant friction betweenneighbourhood watches, the police and

the local Community Policing Forum (CPF).In the Bothasig Police precinct, however,

no such friction exists.Here police, CPF and neighbourhood

watches regularly work hand-in-hand tomake life a little tougher for criminals andmuchmore serene for residents of Bothasig,

Edgemead and Richwood.It got to the point of the three watches

sharing one radio network and joining oneanother on crime prevention operations andemergencies.This collaboration has slowly fallen into

place ever since the community driven CPFchairperson, Neal de Wit, made it his goalto lead by example and inspire the watchesto stand together against crime.EdgemeadWatch chairpersonMark Rich-

ards sums it up by saying the three suburbsare not silos for criminals, who move freely

about from one to the other. According tohim it only makes sense to share informa-tion and resources as much as possible.Says De Wit: “I don’t want our kids to be

afraid to leave the house. Together thewatches, the CPF and the police must forma lasting partnership.”De Wit has been identified as the catalyst

that united the different safety and securitysectors in the area, withmany residents reg-ularly thanking him for what he’s done inthe area.But he shies away from the spotlight and

insists that the police deserve a lot of thecredit.“The community should see the police in

a positive light, because they really areamazing,” he explains, before adding that hewill always take a hard stance on corrup-tion.The commitment ofBothasigpolice officer

is regularly praiseworthy according toRich-ards, who says some members even assistwatch operations on their off days.“They are top class,” raves Richards.V To page 2.

private security companies that play an in-tegral part in the whole picture.DeWit emphasises that the true pillars of

The chance of finding a dirty carpet inGareth Sheen’s house is zero, becausehe owns more than 400 vacuum clean-

ers.Yes, this man is Cape Town’s undisputed

king of the vacuum cleaner.“I have no ideawhy vacuum cleaners. Ev-

er since I could remember I have had a fasci-nation with them,” explains Gareth. “I ownroughly 400 to 450 vacuums. That numberis always changing though. If I am interest-ed in a new vacuum cleaner, I will purchaseone, but I often sell these newer ones whenI have finished researching them.”

When Gareth speaks about his vacuumcleaners, it is clear that he has a passion forwhat most people only see as a householdcleaning tool.

“I like many things about vacuum clean-ers. In the vintage ones it’s the design. I loveworking on them and restoring them to

their original condition. I buff up the plasticandalloyandrespray thepaintwork, fit newbearings to the motor or in the case of thereally old ones regrease the bearings as theyare designed for just that motor. In the new-er ones it’s the technology,” enthuses Ga-reth. He says he was amazed to find that hewas not the only one mad about vacuumcleaners. “I belong to a vacuum cleaner col-lecters clubbased inAmericawithover 2600members, and that’s just one of manyclubs.” The collection started when he wasabout eight years old, but it really startedgrowing about 14 years ago.

Once he starts talking about his collec-tion, it’s difficult to get a word in.

“I mostly collect pre-90s machines withthe majority of my collection coming fromthe ’40s, ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.“Dysons are my favourite modern brand

of vacuum. I think they completely revolu-tionised the vacuum market in 1994. I ownone of the very first Dyson cleaners, a Dc01,and I own the latest – aDc42.Myoldest vacu-

um cleaner is from 1929 and still works. Ihave some vary rare vacuums in my collec-tion which mostly consist of South Africandesigned and manufactured machines likethe Electrolux 404, amachine designed herein SouthAfrica, and as such no informationexists on it on the internet.Mygrandmotherhad one and I searched long andhard to findanother and eventuallymywife’s aunt fromCalvinia found one for me.

“During the 1970s and 1980s South Africahad a wonderful setup of companies manu-facturing vacuums here, and even morewere designed just for our market. Electro-lux had a huge manufacturing plant inPaarden Eiland,” says Gareth.Gareth’s wife, Joanne, finds most of his

vacuums for him.“The ones she finds aremymost precious

ones. She really supportsmypassion,whichI think is pretty awesome. My favourite isa Tellus which looks nothing like a vacuumcleaner at all. Joanne found it in an antiqueshop in Kalk Bay,” says Gareth.

re verwoes het.Sipho Radebe (skuilnaam) se vrou en kin-

ders woon nou by familie ná verlede maandse brand. Volgens Radebe moet hy in sy een-heid agterbly, al is die dak sodanig beskadigdat die reënwater inloop.

“Ons het al baie by die bestuur van diefasiliteit gekla, maar niemand luister naons nie. Dit is onmenslik om in ’n verwoestegebou te bly, veral noudat die winter hieris,” sê Radebe, wat sy naam uit vrees virviktimisasie verswyg wil hê.

Radebe se vrou, Babalwa, sukkel met ’nlongkwaal en moes inderhaas ander bly-plek soek. “Ek was in die hospitaal toe die

brand in een van die ander eenhede ont-staan het. Met my tuiskoms het ek gesiendit is nie gesond vir my om daar aan te blynie, aangesien ek gesukkel het om asem tehaal. Sommige inwoners is na alternatieweverblyf verskuif, maar ons moes aanbly,” sêBabalwa.

Om die aandag te vestig op die problemewat hulle ondervind, het sy briewe geskryf,maar tot op hede nog niks gehoor nie.

“My kinders moes in die middel van hulvoorbereiding vir die eksamen geskuifword en hulle het geweldig gesukkel. Dingehet so swaar geword dat hulle beradingmoes ontvang. Hulle verstaan nie hoekomdie gesin nou weg van mekaar moet blynie,” sê Babalwa oor haar kinders wat on-derskeidelik 13, 12 en 8 is.

’n Barmhartige familielid, wat ook ’n me-diese dokter is, het haar intussen oor Babal-wa en die kinders ontferm.

“Ons is dankbaar vir die hulp, maar onskan nie vir altyd hier woon nie. Die departe-mentmoet laatweet of hulle vir onsalterna-tiewe verblyf gaan verskaf. Daar is nie ’nmanier wat ons kan teruggaan na daardieverwoeste plek nie, want ek en my kindersse gesondheid is in gedrang. Dit is net jam-mer my man moet nog daar bly,” sê Babal-wa, wat voorheen ook vir korrektiewe dien-ste gewerk het.

Volgens haar het die brand glo ontstaantoe ’n besope inwoner omstreeks 03:00 be-sluit het om te kook. Die man het vermoede-lik aan die slaap geraak en die brand het uitsy woonstel na die res van die vertrekkeversprei. Net ses woonstelle is nie beskadignie. Onbevestigde gerugte wil dit hê dat diegeboue gesloop moet word.

Hy was ’n uitblinker oplaerskool,maar net ’n skaduwee ophoërskool.

Dié man van die westelike kus-streek was aan heroïen verslaaftoe hy in ’n ernstige motorfietson-geluk betrokke was.

“Ek was altyd siek en vol pynevan die dwelms. Ek moes toe myouers alles vertel. In Januarie 2011is ek na ’n kliniek vir dwelmbehan-deling,” sê die man.

Dit is op tye soos Dwelmbewus-makingsweek – van 24 tot 28 Junie– dat hy sy eie en ander se gruwel-stories onthou.

“Ek het begin branderplankrytoe ek 10 was en begin sigaretterook op 13. Op 14 het ek en mymaats dagga begin rook. Op hoër-skool het ek begin raves bywoonsaam met ouer vriende en kennisgemaak met ander dwelms soosLSD, buttons, ecstacy, crack en he-roïen,” vertel hy.

Iemand anders sê: “Die dwelm-probleemhet bymyal hoe erger ge-word en ek het alle dwelms pro-beer. Op 40 het heroïen amper mylewe gekos toe ek vir dood in diehospitaal gelos is.”

Storie agter verslawingDaar is ’n storie agter elke ver-

slawing, besef diemanvandiewes-telike kusstreek.

“Toe ek in die vroeë sewentigs indie Kaap kom werk het, het ek niegedrink nie. Nou, soveel jare later,kan ek nie eens meer onthou wan-

neer of hoekom ek begin drink hetnie of wanneer dit buite beheer be-gin raak het nie. Wat ek wel weet,is dat ek een Maandagoggend weerhalf dronk en siek wakker gewordhet en besef het dat ek nie so konvoortgaan nie,” sê ’n ander per-soon.

“Ek het begin dwelms gebruik asgevolg van kleintyd-trauma. Ekwas baie sensitief, was vas aan Mase rokspante en baie bang vir Pa.

“Ek was ses jaar oud toe Ma diehuis verlaat het en Pa al sy woedeopmyuitgehaal het. Pahetmybaierondgeruk en gepluk. Ek was bangvir alles en my pa het my vir allesblameer. Ek het begin sigarette endagga rook en het baie gedrink,” sêdie man van Namibië.

Almal van hulle is óf verwys na’n rehabilitasiesentrum óf het selfbesluit tot hier toe en nie verdernie.

“Toe ek op 17 verslaaf gewordhetaan heroïen, het ek baie gewig ver-loor. Op 18 het ek 46 kg geweeg. Myouers het iets begin vermoed,maarek het gesê dit is van akademiese

spanning dat ek nie kan eet nie.“Hulle het gedink dit is gewone

adolessente probleme.Ekdinkhul-le was te skaam en bang om te dinkdat hul kind dwelms gebruik.”

Hy het later vir vier maande op-gehou en baie goed gedoen. Hy het’n motorfiets gekry en het “lang en-te gery” as hy niks gehad het omte doen nie.

Was verveeldMaar toe een Sondag ...“Ek was verveeld en sonder om

te dink het ek weer heroïen gaankoop en gerook. Tot vandag toe kanek dit nie verstaan nie, want ekwou regtig nie terugkeer na die oulewenswyse nie. Ek was toe in ’nmotorfietsongeluk enmygesigwasvermink en ek was blind. Dit was’n aaklige tyd vol pyn en selfver-wyt. Ek het geglo God straf my oormy dwelmgebruik. Die versoekingis altyd daar om terug te val in diegreep van dwelms,” sê hy.

’n Ander een sê: “As ek in diestrate in Ravensmead stap en ekruik die daggawalms, dan sper myniesgatte oepe soes ’n pêd s’n. Danknyp ek my neus toe en stap weg.

“Die lus duur net ’n minuut oftwee en dan gaan dit weg. Ek dinknet aan die string negatiewe gevol-ge wat wag as ek weer dwelms ofalkohol gebruik.”

Die man wat in die vroeë sewen-tigs Kaapstad toe gekom het, en“bevryding” in alkohol gevind het,voeg by: “Vandag is dit nie vir mybelangrik om daardie jare te ont-hou nie. Daar is niks wat ek daar-aan kan verander nie en ek kan ditnie terugkry nie. Wat nou vir myonmeetbaar belangrik is, is dat ek

vanoggend nugter wakker gewordhet en dat ek hopelik vanaand nug-ter sal gaan slaap. Ná meer as 16jaar leef ek nog steeds een dag op’n slag en ek weet dat my nugter-heid met een onbesonne daad vanmy weggeneem kan word. Ek hetnie ‘planne’ om nugter te bly nie;slegs hierdie een wete: dat ek nooitweer wil drink nie, dat ek nie hier-die nuwe ‘ek’ weer in drank gaanverdrink nie. My nugter lewe is tekosbaar om weg te gooi.”

Die vinnige reaksie deur ’n beamptevan ’n sekerheidsmaatskappy en ’ninwoner van Monte Vista het verhoed

dat ’n bejaarde vrou en haar hond in ’n huisdoodbrand.

Die brand het verlede Dinsdag in Le Seur-straat begin toe ’n broodrooster vermoede-lik aan die brand geslaan het. Weens diebrand kon die vrou en die hond, wat op dieboonste verdieping was, nie na buite gaannie.

Volgens Gawie Venter van DistrictWatch het hulle ’n noodoproep van die be-trokke huis ontvang.

“Toe een van ons beamptes, Ryan Capes,by die huis aankom, het hy gesien die boon-ste verdieping brand. Hy het uitgevind daaris ’n vrou en ’n hond vasgekeer. Capes hetdadelik terug beheerkamer toe gery om ’nleer te kry. By sy aankoms op die toneel hethy gevind ’n ander man het reeds sy bakkieteen die huis geparkeer en hulle het die leerbo-op die bakkie gesit,” sê Venter.

Die man, Shaughn Rousseau, is met dieleer deur die venster. “Rousseau kon net diehond na veiligheid help. Dit was moeiliker

om die bejaarde vrou by die venster uit tekry. Capes is saam met Rousseau deur dievenster en in daardie stadium was diebrand al so geblus dat hulle met die vrouby die trappe kon afkom,” sê Venter.

Rousseau, wat van sy huis af werk, sê hyken die inwoners van die huis baie goed enry elke dag daar verby. “Wanneer ek daarverby ry, kyk ek altyd in daardie rigting ofalles in die haak is. Toe ek daar verby ry,het ek gesien daar kom rook by die vensteruit en die vrou en die hond leun deur dievenster. Ek het die hond uitgekry, maar dievrou was bietjie skrikkerig,” sê Rousseau.

Volgens Rousseau voel hy nie soos ’n heldnie. “Ek dink nie ek is ’n held nie. Dit is eer-der Capes wat die held moet wees. Al watek gedoen het was om te help, want dit isin my geaardheid. Soms sê my familie ekdoen iets sonder om te dink – só graag wilek help,” sê Rousseau.

Hy sê hy is ook vir rookinaseming ge-toets, maar was nie so erg geraak soos Ca-pes nie. “Ek het ook die vrou se dogter agter-na na die hospitaal geneem om haar ma tebesoek.”

Kapt. Wayne Theunis, polisiewoordvoer-der, sê hulle dra geen kennis van die voor-val nie.

On 27 June 1990 Francis August wastold there were complications in herpregnancy and that there was a

chance that her baby girl might bebreached.

The doctors were concerned that eitherthe baby or Francis' life could be in danger,but Francis was a fighter and pushedthrough unabated.

Five hours later Crystal was born.Now the 25-year-old Crystal is gearing up

for her 26th birthday by continuing the ex-cellent humanitarian work she has doneover the last four years.

Every birthday she spends five hours ofher time to alleviate the lives of the less for-tunate, an initiative she calls Birthday ofHope.

“It is my way of giving back to the com-munity. I am a young woman aspiring to in-spire future generations of young girls torise above their circumstances and achievegreater heights. Birthday of Hope providesa platform to encourage young ones andgive them hope for a better tomorrow.”

This year the Parow Valley resident willbe distributing blankets to Parow ValleyWelfare, the Greyton Red Cross Society, Ge-nadendal Old Age Home and Huis MartinaOld Age Home, but she needs everyone’shelp to get as many blankets as possible.

“I have already managed to get 43 blan-kets through a social media drive, but myaim is to deliver 200 blankets to thebenefici-aries,” she explains.

As with her previous four birthdays shewill again spend five hours at an orphanageor an old age home (or even both!)

Whenaskedwhyshe feels theneed tohelpthe less fortunate and when this realisationoccurred, she answers: “While I was livingin the CBD I always walked past droves ofhomeless people. Some of them even hadchildren. I realised then and there that Ineed to do whatever I can to help people.I can’t solve their problems, but I can lenda helping hand.”

When Crystal talks about the desperate

need of others or how much she depends onher mother, her pillar of strength, she cries.

Suffice to say she is very committed tohercause, “but as with all things in life themore help you can get from others the bet-ter”.

“People can contact me via email orphone me if they have blankets or any othergoods to donate,” she insists, before con-cluding: “I have learnt to appreciate whatI have – something that is lacking in theworld. To have a father and a mother whocare for you, and want to provide you withthe best possible childhood, is a blessing.The cliché is that charity begins at home,but this is incomplete. Winter holiday programme running againFocused and committed on the next

generation, Edge Church will be run-ning a holiday club over the midyear

school break once again.Last year no less than 1450 children at-

tended Holiday Club, with a staggering 430volunteers.Loads of activities have been tailored for

each age group, including singing, danc-ing, drama, Bible story time, arts andcrafts, group games and snack time.The impact of Holiday Club has left

Chloe, my oldest daughter, start-ed going to Holiday Club even before westarted going toEdgeChurch tenyears ago.She discovered and fell in love with Jesusat Holiday Club. “Holiday Club has been around for over30 years and it’s amazing to see the impact

The programme is run over three venueswhere everyone is welcome, starting atEdgemead Primary School for aweek fromMonday 27 June until Friday 1 July, and atEdge Church’s Melkbos campus and theSummer Greens Community Hall the fol-lowingweek fromMonday 4 July until Fri-day 8 July.

The two themes for this year are “BlastOff” and “Infinity”. Structured in a waybest suited for various age groups, “Blast

Off”will run in themornings for ages threeand up until Grade 3, and “Infinity” willrun in the evenings for Grade 4 up untilGrade 7. Children are placed in groupswith children of their own age, and eachgroup has a dedicated group leaderthroughout the week.There is no cost to attend, but if parents

“Ek is gebore en getoë in Belhar en het se-wesbydieSekondêreSkoolExcelsior enver-skeie provinsiale en internasionale spanneafgerig, terwyl ek nog steeds by ’n finansiëleinstelling gewerk het. Ek was voorheen byNedbank en is tans by Ou Mutual, een vandie borge van die klub,” sê hy.

Van die spelers wat hy onder hande gehadhet, is Justin Geduld, Cheslin Kolbe, EdwinZass en Dennis Cox in die WP se o.18-span.

Hy was ook die afrigter van die SA sewes-studentespan van 2009 tot 2011, wat die Cen-trale 7’s in Parys enMorokko gewen het. Hyhet ook Kenia Shujaa 7’s afgerig, wat dieAfrikabeker gewen het.

“Excelsior sal my altyd na aan die hart lê,want ek het baie sukses daar behaal. Ek hetook deur Afrika gereis en het afrigting inlande soos Uganda en Kenia gedoen.”Belhar speel in die A-kompetisie van die

WP se Superliga en die klub se sterkpunt issy hardlooprugby. Die klub spog met lojaleondersteuners wat weekliks die span komondersteun, wat bydra tot die span se suk-ses. Belhar het ook al Blitsbokke opgelewer.“Tans oefen vyf klubspelers by die WP se

amateurspan. Vanjaar is my eerste jaar ashoofafrigter van die A-span en my doelwitis om ’n sterkwenkultuur indieklub te skep,wat met dissipline, harde werk en waag-moed gepaardgaan.Ons is nognie daarwaarons wil wees nie, maar hopelik sal alles inplek val,” het Weir gesê.Belhar het nie uitblinkers nie, maar die

span in sy geheel dra by tot die klub se suk-ses. Die klub het ’n paar sleutelspelers ver-loor en hopelik sal die jong spelers hul voete

vind.“Ons gebruik hoofsaaklik spelers uit Bel-

har en omgewing en doen ’n beroep op hulleom by die klub se speelstyl in te koop en bydie klub te bly. Belhar se uiteindelik doel isom in die Gouebekerkompetisie, voorheendie Community Cup, te speel, sodat ons ta-lent op televisie gewys kan word.

“In ons wedstryd teen Tygerberg hetmeeras 1 000 toeskouers kom kyk en dink net watkan gebeur met televisiedekking,” sê hy.Omdat die klub ’n gemeenskapsklub is,

probeer hulle om meer by die omliggendeskole betrokke te raak, maar wil dit op ’ngroter skaal doen. “Diemeeste van die afrig-ters het ’n voldagwerk, wat verhoed dat hul-le by skole betrokke kan raak.“Virmy is dit belangrik dat die jeug inBel-

har moet opkyk na die spelers, sodat hullekan sien daar is beter keuses as bendes endwelms. Wanneer ons Saterdae op die velddraf, gaan dit vir die spelers nie net oor die80minute nie, maar jy is ’n ambassadeur virjou gemeenskap,” sê Weir.

Die klub is in 1992 deurwyle Arthur Booy-sen gestig en sy seun, Jerome, is tans die pre-sident van die klub.
