Anew primary school is to be built inKlipheuwel, a settlement on theKlipheuwel Road outsideDurbanville.

This was discussed during a visit by Don-aldGrant,Minister ofEducation in theWest-ern Cape, to Durbanville on invitation byTheresa Uys, councillor of Ward 21 of Sub-council 7 (Koeberg), and Denise Robinson,

local member of parliament.The schoolwill cater for between 460 to 620

children.These primary school children are cur-

rently travelling by bus to Klipheuwel Pri-mary School inMikpunt, while some also at-tend the Alpha Primary School in Morning-star.Thenewprimary schoolwill open inJanu-

ary 2016. The school is being planned on 5 hafarm land, which will be donated to the De-

partment of Transport and Public Works(DTPW) by Telkom.“The deed of donation has been approved

by the provincial treasury and signed by thepropertymanagement at DTPW,” saidMilli-cent Merton of the directorate communica-tion of the Western Cape Education Depart-ment.“This document was couriered to Telkom

and we are waiting for the document to besigned by their representative in order for

the donation to be concluded,” she said.About 2,5 ha will be required for the con-

struction of the school facility.“The school will be planned according to

the latest norms and standards,” she said.Construction is due to start late in thenext

financial year, which ends in March 2015.During his visit, Grant thanked a group

of volunteers in reading and maths pro-grammes in rural areas in Durbanville.

Among them were a group of volunteersfrom the Durbanville Presbyterian Church,who assist with teaching and other tasks atthe Meulenhof Primary School in Philadel-phia. Some help with English reading.

Brenda Romburgh, leader of the churchgroup, said they are concerned about theshortage of classrooms and the fact that thelibrary is used as a classroom.

“We are hoping to get the library going, sothat the children can go there to read.”

She said they have found that the childrenbattle with instructions and the vocabularyin mathematics rather than the mathemat-ics itself.

MathsAlso present were Hans Smidt of the Lions

Club of Durbanville. He is also involved withthe Meulenhof Primary School in Philadel-phia. Elaine Smith, a member of the LionsClub of Durbanville, does projects at TheValley Primary School on the Altydgedachtfarm. Representatives of the Memory Insti-tute in Durbanville were also present. Theinstitute assists with mathematics andmemory training in the rural areas.

Loekie van Wyk (“Oom Loekie”) and AnneKing, who are involved with the DurbanvilleSchools Foundation and organise literacyand mathematics olympiads for learners infarm schools, were absent.

Grant said about 47 new schools were builtin the past three years. “I am aware of thegrowth in Durbanville and that even moredevelopment is coming,” he said.

“Durbanville schools are full to capacity.I know that. If we have done one thing prop-erly, is that we have good quality data now.We can go on the internet and download howmany cars are parked in a school’s car park.It is possible to get information where thepressure points are,” he said.

“Literacy and numeracy remain our pri-mary goals.

“On 18 February the test results will be re-leased. The good news is that the mathemat-ics results for Grade 3 and 6 have improved.The result for Grade 9 is still disappointing.We must lift them up from the bottom.

“The help you give is very important forthis. We need people from outside the systemto help inside the system,” Grant said to thevolunteers.

Digitise“But, they must not be disrupting to what

is going on in classroom. In some schoolswith volunteers the teachers are sittingback,” he said.

“According to strategic plan put in placein November 2009 about 1 000 of the biggestschools will be connected to the internet us-ing local wireless network.

“This way we can digitise lessons and les-sons can be downloaded. All information,textbooks and the curriculum can be down-loaded.

“The teaching profession will have majorchanges in future. The challenge is to upskillteachers to be able to use the technology,”he said.

The plan is to have this in place by 2030

and will ensure children have access to qual-ity education, he said.

“The department also hopes to ensure thereduction of underperforming high schools.This year the department will also look atthe largest underperforming primaryschools. These schools must be put in ICU,”Grant said.

“We must make a plan to have more dis-trict resources available to improve theseschools. Mathematics has improved, but weare not happy with the level of literacy. Ifyou are not able to read and write, you can-not solve problems,” he said.

“Children are constantly on cellphones,watching television and not reading. Theyare not using their imagination. If you do not

develop logic by writing complex sentences,you will not be able to solve problems,”Grant continued.

“The work children learn in the founda-tion phase is absolutely critical. If childrenare not properly taught in the foundationphase from Grade R to Grade 3, we will losethem along the line.

“They will struggle to keep up in Grade 4to 6, and in Grade 8 and 9 they will be repeat-ing grades,” he warned.

Grant was accompanied by Uys to attendthe opening of the MTBS athletics event. Healso visited Fairmont High School and otherschools such as the Alpha Primary Schoolin Morningstar and Trevor Manuel PrimarySchool to address problem issues, said Uys.

motor coordination, usually apparent inchildhood. It manifests as difficulty inthinking, planning and executing plannedmovements or tasks.TadaKids is amulti-disciplinarydevelop-

mental programme that integrates the prin-ciples of occupational therapy, speech ther-apy, psychology and other inter-discipli-nary therapeutic principles that aredesigned to ensure that children receivemaximumfunctional independence in theirvarious environments.The focus is to care for the whole family,

also assisting parents with managing thisdisorder, said Dr Athena Pedro, pro-gramme director.“Our approach is simple. We evaluate

your child’s needs and develop a tailor-made, individualised programme as we be-lieve that all our children have differentneeds and ‘one shoe does not fit all’,” shesaid.“We then wait for those Tada! moments”,

Pedro said.Dyspraxia is a variable condition, mean-

ing that itmanifests in differentways at dif-ferent ages, she said.Symptoms depend somewhat on the age

of the child.Younger children (six to 24 months) will

The Kraaifontein cluster of the South Afri-can Police Service, which includes Durban-ville, Brackenfell and Kraaifontein policestations, had its celebration of National Po-lice Day at the Blue Ridge Sportfield in Wal-lacedenein in Kraaifontein.Prior to the celebrations at the sport

Dozens of City of Cape Town trafficcops merely got slapped on the wristsrecently, for scores of speeding viola-

tions recorded in traffic vehicles duringNo-vember and December.The speeding reports generated by the

traffic vehicle fleet’s tracking system weregenerated a few weeks ago.These reports reflect some 40 traffic offic-

ers from all over the city including thenorthern suburbs, excessively breakingthe speed limits on local roads.Hundreds of violations are recorded

where some officers drove at speeds doublethe allowed speed limit.Speeds in excess of 170 km/hwere record-

ed in 60 km/h speed zones, that of 170 km/hin 80 km/h speed zones and that of morethan 190 km/h in 120 km/h speed zones,many of which occurred in and around thenorthern suburbs and on the N1.According to a TygerBurger source, in-

formal hearings were held earlier this yearto investigate the violations.“Although some of these officers could

prove that the speedingwas executed in act-ing in the course of their duties, themajori-ty could not account for the speeds theywere travelling,” this source said.According to the source the times on the

reports reflect that many of these officerswere on their way to or from work whenthe violations were recorded.“Guiltymembers were issuedwithwarn-

ings,” he said.Speeding can result in traffic fines of up

to R3 000, but a motorist caught driving196 km/h – like one officer did – is arrestedon the spot and has to defend himself incourt.

Not toleratedRichard Bosman, executive director for

safety and security for the city, respondedby saying that traffic officers must obey all

rules of the road, unless they are acting inthe course of their duties.“Failing to do so is unacceptable and such

behaviour will not be tolerated,” he said ina statement to TygerBurger.“..not driving in accordance with the

rules does portray a negative image. How-ever, while there are a handful of traffic of-ficers who have been found guilty of flout-ing the rules of the road, themajority of ourteam are law-abiding and continue to set asterling example for motorists.”Bosman continued to say that the directo-

rate will be reporting the matter to thecity’s civilian oversight committee at theirfirst meeting in February.According to Bosman, the on board com-

puter reports are issued regularly by thecorporate fleet for all city employees, notonly traffic officers.

agement Corporation (RTMC) termed theseincidents as unscrupulous and stronglycondemned it.“It is in such that we experience ever-in-

creasing road carnage in our country andthat is regrettable,” said spokespersonThato Mosena.Arrive Alive and the RTMC distinguish-

es speed as one of the leading causes of seri-ous injuries and deaths on our roads.“It increases the risk of collisions and it

comes with a high price. Excessive speed-ing remains a problem as people among ushave chosen to ignore road safetymessagesor think that they won’t get caught. On av-erage 20 people a day are being arrested forexcessive speeding, especially in urbanmetropolitan areas, which is a concern tous,” she said.“Emergency personnel such as the police

and trafficmayonlydisregard certain rulesof the road in cases of emergency...”

spreek, waarop Fritz Rauch, die leesunie seeerste manlike lid, ’n heildronk ingestel het.Dié leesunie, een van die oudstes in die

land, is op 1 Maart 1938 gestig. Dit het sy ont-staan te danke aan ’n leesunie wat in 1919deur ene Mabel Malherbe in Pretoria gestigis. Lulu Briers, wat met Malherbe bevriendwas, het haar voorbeeld gevolg en die Dur-banville-leesunie met ander stigterslede,

Miemie Loubser, Herta Louw en Marie Sie-berhagen, begin.Briers was voorsitter tot 1944, waarna Sie-

berhagen haar as voorsitter opgevolg het endié amp vir 38 jaar beklee het.Die heel eerste spreker wat die leesunie in

LGFB is part of a global initiative whichwas established in 2004 by the Cosmetic, Toi-letry and Fragrance Association.

The LGFB foundation helps patients in ac-tive cancer treatment by addressing the ap-pearance related side-effects of their treat-ment in a practical and positive way.

Free workshops are held at major hospitalsand clinics. Each patient receives a free cos-metics bag with products to be used as toolsto address the distressing side-effects of chem-otherapy and radiation.

Patients leave feeling uplifted and empow-ered. They had fun and enjoy the support andkinship that they experience with like-mind-ed women. A group of five patients attendedthe workshop which was more like a make-over for the spirit.

TheDivorce Care for Kids support groupwill help your children heal from the painof divorce, while the Divorce Care supportgroup will help you recover from the painof divorce or separation and teach you howto rebuild your life.

The support group for single parentingwill give help and hope to anyone who isparenting alone or most of the time.

These three groupsmeet simultaneouslyso that parents can bring their childrenalong.

The 99er Cycle Tour and MTB Chal-lenge had a record 4 676 entries onSaturday.

TheMTBevents inparticular sawa tre-mendous growth in competitors. Thiswas the 16th time that the 99erCycle Tourhas been held.

This year’s new MTB routes were wellenjoyed and the 35 km route proved to bevery challenging. The 99 km race had astrong field of competitors.

Local winnerLocal cyclists from the Durbanville ar-

ea can be proud of Craig Boys, who wonthe men’s 99 km event. Jenny Stenerhag,top international cyclist from Swedenwon thewomen’s event. Jennyhasmovedher way up the winner’s podium fromthird place in 2012, to second place in 2013and now top position in 2014.

The ladies’ 35 kmMTBracewaswonbyMatie student Mariska Straus, who is atop national and international MTB com-petitor. The men’s 35 km MTB event was

won by Jurgens Uys, a top competitor inthe South African Downhill MTB Cham-pionships.

MedicalThere were some cyclists who sus-

tained injuries on the day, the more seri-ous of these occurring on the R44 stretchof the race. Medical services en routewere top class with fivemedical points intotal and four roaming ambulances.

The total value of performance prizeswas R42 000, 45 % up from 2013. Luckydraw prizes, which totalled R100 000 invalue, included two swimming pools.4 000 goodie bags and medals.

There were 190 enthusiastic partici-pants in the 5 km Fun Walk, introducedthis year, and each walker received amedal and Sterrie Stumpie.

Over 350 volunteers in the form of par-ents, staff and pupils from El ShaddaiChristian School in Durbanville onceagain ensured that this was a well organ-ised and well run event.

weerstaan en die Hoërskool D.F. Malan seaanslag afweer.Tydens die byeenkoms, geborg deur Die

Burger, het D.F. Malan uiteindelik tweedegeëindig in ’n titaniese stryd teen die Stel-lies wat tot op die einde in die weegskaalwas. Die Hoërskool Bellville het verrasdeur die derde plek in te neem, met dieHoërskool Tygerberg vierde.Die leerders en atlete het hul plekke reeds
