Murwillumbah Public School Promoting Excellence in Education Newsletter 19th September 2019 Term 3 Week 9 PUBLIC SCHOOL Prince Street 6672 1467 Murwillumbah Principals Message PLANNING FOR 2020 As a school, we have started planning for 2020. It is important we have plans in place which will assist with a smooth transition to 2020 classes for all students, parents and staff. If you know that your family will not be at Murwillumbah Public School in 2020, we ask that you please let us know as soon as possible by sending a written notification to the school office. Alternatively, if you have a child commencing Kindergarten at Murwillumbah Public School in 2020, we ask that you please make contact with our school office for the relevant paperwork (if you have not already done so). Our anticipated enrolments for 2020 were submitted to the Department of Education a few weeks ago and need to be updated regularly for whole system planning. It is important these numbers are reflective of what we expect 2020 to look like in terms of student enrolments and to assist with planning according to our anticipated student enrolments. KINDY 2020 TRANSITION Our Kindergarten transition program is running very smoothly. We are about to enter our third week of transition. This takes place each Friday from 9.30-2.30pm. The children are very settled and are enthusiastically participating in a number of classroom activities. They are working cooperatively together to develop relationships with other school students. It is wonderful to watch them familiarise themselves with our school, current students and staff. The following transition dates will continue to occur for students and parents joining us in 2020. Friday 20th & 27th September, October 18th & 25th, November 1st and our last day of transition Friday 8th November. NSW PARLIAMENT HOUSE I am in Sydney with our school captains Ruby and Kohen along with Mrs Ross as we head to NSW Parliament House today. As reported earlier in the year, our school has been invited to attend the NSW Resilient Australia Awards as a finalist in the Resilient Australia School category. We are very proud to be one of two schools to make the final. STUDENT SUCCESS Swim School is going along swimmingly! All staff have commented on our children and their outstanding listening, participation and responsibility in the sessions. Well done students. A special congratulations to Riley P who finished third in his long jump event at the North Coast Championships last week. Riley will now travel to Sydney to take part in NSW PSSA State Championships! Outstanding work Riley.

WE ARE A POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) SCHOOLBeing a PBL school means that we aim to teach positive behaviours explicitly to students through modelling and teaching behaviour expectations across a variety of settings. Positive behaviours are rewarded through our green chance cards, Possy Pete along with our weekly prize draw and end of term excursion for positive behaviour.

NAPLANParents and carers of students in Year 3 and Year 5 will receive their child’s NAPLAN results before the end of term. When you look at these results, please bear in mind they are a snapshot in time of your child’s learning. If you would like to discuss these NAPLAN results, please contact the office to make an appointment with your child’s teacher.

TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEYOur school will be participating in the Tell Them from Me survey this semester. The Tell Them From Me survey platform provides all of the school community with the opportunity to give feedback on what we do as a school. Parents and carers are invited and encouraged to provide their perspectives on the school through the parent carer version of the Tell Them From Me survey platform. This can be accessed on any device with internet access by clicking on the following link

http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/r5z2sOur school leaders will also be out and about with an IPad between 2.40 and 3.00pm each day for the next few weeks for people to complete surveys. We rely on your feedback to know what we do well and to identify areas we could improve in, so your encouragement with the survey is greatly appreciated. All responses are completely anonymous.

ATTENDANCE Below I have included information around school Attendance procedures. I have attached them to this newsletter for your information. Some important notes for parents/carers –• Staff monitor patterns of student absence• Staff follow internal processes of support – they will discuss any attendance concerns with their Supervisor/Assistant Principal. They will also bring the concern to the attention of the Learning and Support team, which meets fortnightly with the Executive, Teacher, Learning and Support Teacher and School Counsellor. They may also bring the concern to the attention of the Principal.• Students with equal to and/or under 85% attendance are discussed at the Learning and Support meeting and are of concern. This is equal to five days absent this term. If your child has had

more than five days off this term already, his/her attendance is of concern.• The principal will communicate with the Home School Liaison Officer for habitual or consistent absence.• Parents/carers have the responsibility to ring the school, email the school or send a notification when your child is not at school to explain absence. All absences must be explained within seven days of the absence.• If your child is marked absent on the roll and it has not been explained you will receive a text message.• Parents/carers must apply for an extended certificate of leave of absence for approval if having a holiday/extended leave during school term• Parents/carers must explain the absence, if you have not done so already, when student returns to school.

PUBLIC SPEAKINGCongratulations to all our children who were selected to participate in the Public Speaking Finals held on Thursday 5th September. It was fantastic to hear a vast array of interesting speeches and a special congratulations goes to Finnian stage 3, Mia stage 2 and Edith stage 1 who will now go on to represent the school at the Tweed Heads Public Speaking Finals today! Good Luck.

RESPECTING EACH OTHERAs a school, we are a community and are expected to work together. I would like to thank those parents who have offered assistance lately. It might be something as small as holding a door open for someone else or a friendly smile at another parent or teacher. Thank you for your kindness, it is very much appreciated.
