Murwillumbah Public School Promoting Excellence in Education Newsletter 8th February 2018 Week 2 Term 1 PUBLIC SCHOOL Prince Street 6672 1467 Murwillumbah Principals Message I would like to welcome all existing students and their families back to Murwillumbah Public School and extend this welcome to many new families that have moved into the area. Currently we have 300 students enrolled which means we have maintained 13 classes. I was delighted to see the happy, smiling faces who walked through the school gate on Tuesday morning. What we also saw was the exceptionally high standard of school uniform! Thank you so much to our parents and carers for their support in completing their child’s uniform with black school shoes – thank you, thank you, thank you! – school pride is so obvious. We formed classes late last Friday in the same way it has been done the past few years. We started in our 2017 classes so their teachers from last year could settle students who were anxious about the new school year while we also formed our final numbers. The transition into new classes was seamless. A very smooth start to the school year indeed! I do this as a matter of practice each year and again, I reiterate the importance of this happening for a smooth transition for students. Class placement at Murwillumbah PS takes a number of weeks as careful considerations are made about wellbeing and learning so that we optimise opportunities for every student to shine! give your child the opportunity to connect and make new friends and allow teachers the opportunity to get to know your children. As parents it is really important that we encourage our children to accept change by focusing on the positive aspects of their new environment. A very special welcome to all our Kindergarten children and parents to Kindergarten 2018 at Murwillumbah Public School. We trust your child feels welcome and cared for. These next few weeks are a transition period for our new Kindergarten students as they become familiar with the school grounds, routines, school staff and their peers. This year there are two Kindergarten classes. The Kindergarten teachers have worked together very closely to create well balanced classes, considering a range of needs. We will continue to observe the students during this time. Today, I have sent home a hard copy of the newsletter to all families. This process will be followed at the start of each new Term. Please be aware that all future newsletters for each term will be available online and only hard copies will be sent home to parents who forward a request. If we do not have your email address, please forward this to the office so you can receive an electronic copy.Next Monday 12th February we will be holding our Leaders Induction Assembly. This will take place at 9.15am in the school hall. School Captains and Leaders, Band Leaders, Student Counsellors, Library Monitors, Class Leaders along with Sporting Captains will all be presented with their badges. All parents are most welcome to join us and assist with the presentation of these badges.Keep an eye out for ‘Meet the Teacher’ meetings in the next few weeks. This is a great opportunity for you to meet your child’s teacher and find out a little more about what they do each day at school and how you can help at home. Our Student Welfare Policy can be found on the school website. It contains all information about our school policy and how it operates. It can be found under the heading Caring For Students. The policy is broken into four sections. I encourage you to read this policy if you are uncertain about Student Welfare. Excellent News!! Our school choir have been accepted to perform at the Sydney Opera House

later in the year. Mrs Armour is very excited and has already started auditions for all positions that will be available to our children. I know that children who were involved in this opportunity last year had a wonderful experience and are again looking forward to these auditions. Health Care Plans 2018 If your child has a health care plan (anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetes and any medical condition identified and recorded by the doctor on a health care plan) please provide an updated copy to the school office as soon as possible. Thank you to those parents that have already done so for 2018.2018 Parent Volunteers – WWCC Declaration We are very appreciative of all our parent volunteers in the classrooms and around the school. Please ensure you have completed a WWCC Declaration for volunteers and contractors (Appendix 5) at the school office. You will also need to complete the Proof of Identity that meets the 100-point check. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. If you have previously completed this in 2017, you will not need to do so again this year. School Visitors and Volunteers Please come to the front office and sign in to receive a visitor’s badge when you arrive on the school grounds. You will need to sign out when you are leaving too.

Enjoy your week,

Regards

Les DaleyPrincipal

Swimming Carnival Results What an absolute fantastic day all students in years 3-6 and some 8 year old year 2 students had at the Swimming Carnival on Monday. All 4 houses cheered on their competitors and all swimmers swam well. Non-swimmers had a great time in free swimming. Thank you to all the parents who supported us at the Carnival and a big thank you to Bill Savins who volunteered his time to help with the timekeeping for the Carnival. 23 competitors have been successful in qualifying for the District Swimming Carnival which will be held at the Murwillumbah Pool on Friday 16th February 2018. A note will be sent home very soon for this carnival. For the District Carnival we are looking for parent volunteers to help with the timekeeping. Please see me if you are interested. Thank you, Tristen Hill

Healthy Eating Active LivingHave fun while walking! How long does it take you to get to the local park, library, shops, or to a friend’s house? Consider walking if it is nearby! Walking can be fun for kids, especially if you include some games such as ‘I spy’ or ‘Follow the leader’. Look for beautiful flowers in the gardens, or count all the red cars. When you were little, did you step over lines or cracks in the pavement, pretending they are rivers filled with sharks or crocodiles? Walking to places increases children’s fitness and concentration, and has social benefits too!
