Year 11 Industry Study ExcursionOur Year 11 Industrial Technology – Timber class enjoyed their excursion to a selection of cabinet makers in the local industrial estate. Students were able to obtain a vast range of knowledge and understanding pertinent to their current area of study, while making some necessary connections within the Murwillumbah community.
A heartfelt thank you goes to PCS Cabinets, D&L Custom Cabinets and Commerce Joinery and Cabinets for generously hosting our group of students.
We are very grateful to the Riverview Hotel, who were once again immensely generous in providing the transport for our students to attend the excursion. Thanks also to Mr Owen Kirk for his assistance with transportation and his attendance on the day (Photographs below).

As a three time WA U18 State Champion he competes at the national titles every year and has also landed a number of sponsorship deals. He is about to travel to Bali to make some promotional video footage for his sponsors. In Bali, Brad will be going on a number of surfing trips with World Champion Ryan Hardy and professional coach Aiden Salmon, who co-own Bali Bodyboarding School.
Brad’s ultimate goal is to compete on the world tour. He is one step closer to his dream as he is due to compete at Kiama in July at the world tour qualifying trials.
Alyssa Stavar Year 10 student Alyssa Stavar (photograph below) successfully auditioned to be part of the 2018 NSW Public Schools State Dance Ensemble. Sport newsDuring the past week Riley Lack and Ryan Foran (photograph opposite) both attended the CHS state Rugby League Trials near Newcastle as representatives of the U15 Northern NSW team. Their team were only beaten once throughout the trials and both players impressed selectors enough for them to be chosen in the NSW CHS team which will compete in the National championships at Gympie in Queensland. To highlight this achievement, it has been many years since a Murwillumbah High School student was selected in this elite level team let alone two players at once.
Also competing at the state level for North Coast was Kyle Jeffery-Prestwich in hockey. Kyle was honoured with being named captain of the North Coast team which he led to first place in a very competitive finals series. This is the first time that North Coast has performed so well for many years. Kyle’s leadership and skills were further acknowledged with his selection in the NSW Combined High Schools Open Hockey team.
On Friday 1 June the Far North Coast Combined High Schools Cross Country was held at North Byron Parklands for the first time, combining with the PSSA for the first time in several years. Murwillumbah High School was represented with a team of 22 on a sunny yet windy day. The Murwillumbah High School star of the day was Edward Hubbard (photo opposite) who placed first in the 8km 18 years boys and was crowned Far North Coast age champion. In fourth place was Nick Everest (12 years), Callan Francis finished sixth (16 years), Charles Bullus (16 years) and Ben Lindsay (14 years) finished seventh and finally Cooper Stavar (13 years) and Ebony Woollard (12 years) finished ninth. All these students qualified for the North Coast trials which will be held at Nana Glen on Wednesday 13 June.
Other great performances from our students included Brad McCabe, Connor McCollough , Charlie Munro, John-Joseph Coleman, Max McCollough, Kelsey Dudgeon, Daniel LeDan, Noah Hill and Alexander Andrew. Tom O’Brien-Freeman, Owen Findlay and Chester Durrant also competed in the MC event but only Tom achieved the qualifying time.
MAT18On Thursday 24 May, Pearl Lee, Olympia James-Ainsley, Mackenzie Turner and their Visual Arts teacher Bev Cooke were invited to view Jack Quilter’s sculpture studio which was open to the public during the exciting MAT18 creative arts event. Jack was very generous with his time giving the students an overview of his professional practice and walking them through the making of his recently created sculpture series that you can see in the background of the group photo opposite.
