Murwillumbah Public School Promoting Excellence in Education Newsletter 27th June 2019 Term 2 Week 9 PUBLIC SCHOOL Prince Street 6672 1467 Murwillumbah Principals Message It’s hard to believe we are at the end of Term 2. This term has disappeared very quickly with students being involved in some wonderful learning opportunities. I must acknowledge the work of all the teachers at Murwillumbah PS. Their dedication and professionalism is on show each and every day. To our Student Learning Support Officers, a big thank you also. You do a fantastic job supporting the students at Murwillumbah PS and I know we all appreciate the effort you put in. To the School Office Staff, I also thank you for all of your work and the professional way you represent the school. FESTIVAL OF PERFORMING ARTS During wk 10 nearly every child will perform at the Murwillumbah Performing Arts Festival at the Civic Centre. It is a very busy time with choirs, band and individual performances from many of our students. Please ensure that all notes are signed and returned promptly. It is very important that all students are in full school uniform for every performance. A big thank you goes to the staff for their support of the Music program. I would also like to say thank you to Mrs. Armour for her dedication and enthusiasm with all things music. We are very lucky to have Mrs. Armour here at Murwillumbah PS. Monday – 3/4, 5/6 Choir and Whopping Big Band Tuesday – Concert band, Bunyip band, Drum solos, Brass solos, Duets and Trios and Recorder Ensemble Thursday - Infants Choir, Recorder Duets and Trios For exact times please see the Festival of Performing Arts Program. RAISING RESILIENT CHILDREN It was great to see a number of parents attend the free workshop organised by the family centre. The information shared by Zelinda was both informative and appropriate for our students. The parents who did attend said what a fantastic session it was and how much they learnt. I hope we can provide more of these sessions in the future. The Murwillumbah Community Centre will be hosting a similar session tonight starting at 6pm. VERSE SPEAKING Congratulations to all the students and staff for their excellent performances on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Verse Speaking competition.

Around the School with Primary SportOver the past week, students at Murwillumbah Public School have enjoyed using high jump equipment borrowed from Wollumbin High School. We are exceptionally thankful to Wollumbin High and Mr Lambert for providing this opportunity for our students. Mr Lambert also delivered some high jump coaching to the Year 5 & 6 students on Wednesday which was amazing! Additionally, we thank our own Mr Williams for collecting and returning the colossal mats!

Students from years 3-6 have had many sporting opportunities this term including representative competitions across netball, soccer, softball, touch football, the list goes on. Congratulations to all students who trialled, competed and represented the school with pride. Thank you to our wonderful teachers who have given up many of their own break times to trial and train these students. Without you our children wouldn’t have these fabulous opportunities.

In the second half of the term students have been participating in athletics rotations. It has been fantastic to watch students’ skill level improve in a short space of time.Looking forward to more great opportunities next term! Mrs Ross

Woolworths Earn & Learn ProgramThe Woolworths Earn and Learn Program is finished for another year. Thank you all for your contributions. If you have any stickers at home, please remember to bring them in for us to begin counting.

Enhancing Learning Outcomes for Academically

What is a Selective Class?

Selective classes cater for talented and enthusiastic students who have displayed above average ability. These classes enable students to interact with their peers at a higher level than can normally be provided within a regular classroom or school.

What does it mean for my child?

These students will have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom to ensure that students reach their full potential. Students will be able to access workshops, guest speakers, excursions and competitions to maximise their learning experience.

Who can apply?

All students in government and non-government schools in the Murwillumbah and surrounding area are welcome to apply for entry into our Selective Class.

How do I apply?

A registration form must be submitted in order for your child to be considered for our Selective Class. Please contact Murwillumbah High School if you would like a registration form sent to you. You may also collect a copy from our school.

What is the selection procedure?

Entry into the Selective Class is highly competitive and there are three components in the selection process.1. An academic entrance exam that willtest literacy, numeracy and abstractreasoning ability.2. Students and parents/caregiverswill also need to attend an interview with members of the Selective Class coordinating team at which they will present a portfolio. Guidelines for the portfolio and registration forms are available at Murwillumbah High School.3. A student’s academic record in his/her current school and National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy(NAPLAN) results will also be taken into account. How many places are available?

In 2020, Murwillumbah High School will have approximately 25 places available for the Year 7 Selective Class.

Where will the Selective Class Placement Test be held?

The test will be held in the Murwillumbah High School Elliot Centre (entry via Nullum Street). Conditions for the test will be as for other formal school examinations such as the NAPLAN. The 40 minute test will be held in Term 3 on Tuesday 20 August 2019 at 3:30pm.
