Murwillumbah Public School Promoting Excellence in Education Newsletter 13th June 2019 Term 2 Week 7 PUBLIC SCHOOL Prince Street 6672 1467 Murwillumbah Principals Message DANCE What an absolutely awesome performance by our school dance group last Monday night at the Gold Coast Arts Centre. How fabulous were our students! I was delighted by their precision and their commitment to their performance and their costume was just spectacular. The whole dance was just amazing. I captured so many smiling faces that accompanied the dancing feet and the applause at the end was the loudest on the night! Congratulations to all our children and to Mrs Scott for all her time and effort in preparing the students and to Mr Stowe for supporting our students on the day. Thank you also to Deb Lowe for her work with the costumes and to all our parents for your assistance leading up to the dance and on the night. The children will be performing the dance at our whole school assembly in the last week of term…Wednesday 3rd July. Please come along and join us. STUDENT REPORTS As we approach the end of Semester 1 our teachers are busily writing each child’s report, which will be sent home with your child on Thursday, June 27. The primary purpose of the Student Report is to provide parents (and students) with feedback on their child’s achievements in learning as well as their social development. Each Student Report will contain information about your child’s learning in each of the subject areas i.e. English, mathematics, science, CAPA, history, PDHPE & geography. It will also provide parents with areas their child may require further attention, thus becoming a future goal for the student. These ‘goals’ were discussed at the Parent-Teacher Conference at the start of Term 1. PEER SUPPORT In order for every student to have a strong sense of belonging at Murwillumbah Public School we have re-introduced Peer Support lessons which are running smoothly. The benefit of Peer Support lessons is to provide an opportunity for students from all year levels K-6 to get to know other students & participate in a small group activity which is led by a senior student. I recently sat in with several Peer Support groups and it was terrific to see how well the seniors were leading their groups as well as the high level of participation shown by the younger students.

NAIDOC WEEK Murwillumbah Public will celebrate NAIDOC Week during the first week back in Term 3. The theme for this year is ‘VOICE TREATY TRUTH : Lets work together for a shared future’. The students will participate in a variety of in class activities throughout the week such as studying Indigenous literature and art. The main event will take place on Thursday 25 July and will include a special one hour performance by visiting Aboriginal performer Sean Chooburra. The school will be covering the cost for this performance. Please note that we will also be providing a BBQ which will include kangaroo sausages and crocodile meat and may not be to the liking of all students so please still pack recess and lunch. We are looking for parent helpers to help with the BBQ on the day. Please contact the school to inform of availability. THE LEGALITIES OF COMPULSORY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE In Australia, regular school attendance is compulsory between the ages of 6-17. Children of compulsory school age MUST attend school every day that school is open for instruction. It is important to understand that the New South Wales Department of Education may prosecute parents (including carers) if children of compulsory school age have recurring numbers of unjustified absences from school. SCHOOL PHOTOSSchool photos will take place on Tuesday the 2nd July. Order forms are attached to this newsletter. You may return the pre-paid envelope to the office or send in with your child on Tuesday 2nd July. Please ensure that the correct money is inside the envelope as change will not be given. You may also use the option to pay online using the school code on the envelope. Students should wear full school uniform on the day. ACCEPTIING ENROLMENTS FOR 2020 If you have a child who will be starting school at Murwillumbah Public School in 2020, we

are accepting enrolments now. It is a good idea to bring in your forms early as you will then be placed on the contact list for our special orientation program and classroom visits. Please come in and meet with us to help ensure the beginning of your child’s primary school journey is a positive start for all. Our staff will be making visits to our local pre-schools in the very near future.TOO SICK FOR SCHOOL?It’s often hard to know whether to send your child to school or let them stay home to recover, especially when that means an adult cancelling work. For safety’s sake, if your child seems unwell you should always keep them home from school and seek medical advice. School A to Z and the NSW Health have created an at-a-glance chart to help answer your questions about common childhood illness and how long sick kids need to miss school.CONGRATULATIONSA very special congratulations to our school captain Ruby, who has been successful with her audition to perform a sopranino soloist item at the Sydney Opera House during the 2019 Festival Music Mimosa Concert early next term. There were a number of applications throughout the State with a very high standard. This is wonderful news! Well done, Ruby.SUNSHINE COAST CAMPPlease find attached to this newsletter, information regarding the end of year Sunshine Coast camp for students in years 4, 5 and 6. If you are interested in your child attending, please return the deposit with your note of intention. Please be aware that spots will be allocated on a first in, first paid preference.Enjoy the weeks ahead.RegardsLes DaleyPrincipal

PBL News

Around the School with 5/6R & 5/6S

Stage 3 playground leaders have provided fun and interesting activities for the last two weeks. All students are encouraged to participate in lunchtime games like Duck, Duck, Goose and Simon Says, relay and hurdle practice and footy drills. Well done leaders, keep up the good work.

This term Stage 3 have been excitedly experimenting with robotics from the STEM Share Kits. Students have learnt how to code Micro:Bits using the MakeCode online space. They have written code and downloaded it to make their Micro:Bit perform simple functions (like reading the temperature). Some students have even created an alarm system for their lunch box using the Micro:Bit light sensor.

STEM education, including coding and innovative technologies, are such an important part of preparing our students for the future. We are very fortunate to have had the STEM Share Kit on loan this term.

Far North Coast Dance FestivalLast Monday, the 3rd of June I was lucky enough to take a group of 19 dancers to perform at HOTA on the Gold Coast. The group has been working really hard all year, giving up many of their lunch times and also Thursday mornings before school. They demonstrated our school values throughout the day of rehearsals of being respectful and responsible and making our school very proud. To pass the time waiting for our performance on the night, the girls learnt how to play the game “Boxes” which I used to love playing growing up. I would like to say thank you to all of the group as well as their parents for again supporting us to be able to make this day possible. Thank you also goes to Deb Lowe, who again made our beautiful costumes for the dance. Congratulations to all of the group, it was an amazing performance. The group will be performing in assembly Wednesday 3 July, week 10.Mrs Hayley Scott

Stop The Press - ATHLETICS CARNIVAL DATE CHANGEUnforeseen circumstances have led us to change the date of the school’s annual athletics carnival. Due to a miscommunication a double booking has been made. We have therefore moved our athletics carnival to Wednesday 24th July, this is in Week 1 of Term 3. We thank you for your understanding. In more pleasing news, Wollumbin High School has kindly loaned us their high jump mats for next week. Teachers will each run heats within their classes and we will run the age finals on Friday 21st June. Parents are most welcome to come and watch the finals, your child will be notified if they will be competing on Friday. Times to be confirmed.

Canteen NewsFrom the 21st June to the end of term the eftpos machine in the canteen will be unavailable, sorry for any inconvenience. It will be available again next term. PSSA Netball Gala DayYesterday our Murwillumbah Blue Netball Team played in the PSSA Knockout competition at Arkinstall Park in South Tweed Heads. It was a very busy, highly active day with the girls playing 4 x 40 minute games. The girls won 2 of their 4 games and played exceptionally well. They conducted themselves in an honourable manner and should be proud of their achievements. Well done.Monique Williams
