Principals Message Dear Parents,
As we quickly approach the end of Semester 1, our teachers are busily drafting reports for the students in their class. The primary purpose of our school-based report is to provide parents (and student) with valuable feedback on each child’s achievements in learning as well as their social development. Each report will contain information about what students know about each of the key learning areas i.e. English, mathematics, science, CAPA, history, music & PDHPE. It will also provide parents with areas their child may require further attention, thus becoming future goals for the student.Parents are encouraged to support their child’s learning each and every day by helping with homework, reading books, cooking, playing games etc. It’s important to remember that any investment of time you can give to your child is never wasted. I want to thank all staff at Murwillumbah for the huge amount of time and effort that has gone into preparing these reports.
I recently spent time reviewing our students’ attendance and was pleased to see more than 50 students have not missed a day of school this year. This is a mighty achievement.
Obviously, to get the most out of a good education, you need to be at school. School attendance has a major influence on every child’s educational outcomes i.e. students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve better results at school and are more likely to complete their schooling. Parents can make it easier for their child to attend school by having a positive attitude to learning and education. Poor school attendance patterns can start as early as Kindergarten. It is important that from the first day of school parents set an expectation that their children will be at school every day. Missing an average of ten days of school a term adds up to missing two full years of schooling by the end of Year 10.
During the upcoming weeks, many of our students will be involved in the Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts. All aspects of music

P&C News
Stage 1 NewsKindergarten were particularly keen to save the koalas. They spent the week learning the letter ‘k’ and producing some amazing artworks. They also learnt some interesting facts about koalas. Some students went all out with their costumes in particular, Callum. Hunter came up with the quote of the century, “We will be the superheroes that save the koalas”. Make sure you come and visit the kindergarten rooms and admire the fabulous displays made by KA and KP.As part of our HSIE unit “The Past in the Present” Years 1 and 2 have been looking at how things have changed over time. A highlight of this unit was interviewing our parents about their favourite toy and our sharing afternoon where we were able to show toys from both past and present.

Community NewsSHARE A SLICE OF YOUR LIFE THIS JULY - HOST A WEP EXCHANGE STUDENT!Welcoming an Italian or French-speaking exchange student to your family is rewarding in so many ways. You can share your family’s Aussie way of life with a student from another culture, connect to your community in exciting new ways, and bring the world into your home. And for the student you welcome into your family, you’re providing a once-in-a-lifetime experience they’ll treasure forever. It’s the simple things! For our exchange students, it’s the little things that make their stay so memorable: trying Vegemite for the first time, attending our high school, seeing a kangaroo, koala or cockatoo. Hosting an exchange student doesn’t take anything fancy — just a warm, welcoming spirit and the love you’d give to your own family. WEP is currently looking for families interested in inviting an Italian or French-speaking exchange student this July. If this is of interest to your family, please contact Sylvia Kelly at WEP today to receive detailed program and student information: www.wep.org.au, [email protected], 1300 884 733.
