Murwillumbah Public School Promoting Excellence in Education Newsletter 30th May 2019 Term 2 Week 5 PUBLIC SCHOOL Prince Street 6672 1467 Murwillumbah Principals Message Its been another busy couple of week at MPS with students enjoying the many wonderful activities on offer. A big thank you to Stage 2 teachers and support staff for their efforts with ‘BEE Day.’ The students absolutely loved dressing up and taking part in the many wonderul activities. Well done! I had the pleasure of representing staff at the P&C meeting last Wednesday evening. I would like to take this opportunity to thank this hard working group of parents who dedicate much of their free time to support our students. On behalf of the staff here at MPS, thanks for your continued support. KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS FOR 2020 Do you have a child who is starting Kindergarten next year? It is now time to lodge applications for the 2020 year. Kindergarten packs are available from the front office. Our transition will start later next term. This is a free transition program for children who are going to start at Murwillumbah Public School next year. This is a great way for you and your child to become familiar with the school, as well as meeting other families who are starting next year. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT HELPS TARGET TEACHING Teachers have been using formative assessment strategies as part of maths groups this Semester. In order for teachers to implement targeted teaching effectively, they need accurate information about what students know and are ready to learn next. Key elements of formative assessment include: • identification of goals, outcomes and criteria for achievement • communication between teachers and students about student’s current knowledge and future directions • active involvement of students in their own learning I look forward to seeing how the project evolves during this year. COLLABORATIVE, RESPECTFUL, COMMUNICATION Teachers are very happy to speak with parents and look forward to these conversations. Sometimes information can be shared quickly either before or after school. However, approaching staff on playground duty or when they are leading students to class is not the most appropriate time. If you need to meet with a member of staff then please make an appointment through the office. This will ensure we have time to prepare for the meeting and you will get the most up to date information about your child. I also encourage parents to support our office staff in the same respectful way. They do

PBL News We are starting a couple of exciting initiatives!! Thanks to a suggestion from Anthony in Stage 3, the class which wins Possy Pete for the week will also now be presented with a class merit certificate. This will be displayed on the windows of the classrooms. We wonder which class will end up with the most Possy Pete PBL merits by the end of the year. Another exciting event will commence next week. Stage 3 classes will take turns to be playground leaders and will be playing different games with the younger children. Stage 3 is very excited and we are coming up with some great activities to have fun in the first half of lunch each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

District Cross CountryPractise Pays Off!It was easy to see that training pays off at the Murwillumbah District Cross Country Carnival last Friday! Students from Murwillumbah Public School worked really hard to race either a 2km or 3km track and some were even drenched by a massive down pour midway. As a runner myself I was exceptionally proud of all of the students and the effort they put in. As a teacher I took even more pride in the way the students conducted themselves on the day. I might be a little biased in saying this, but I believe our students were the best behaved at the carnival. Well done to all of you! Also, another massive congratulations to the 14 students who are off to the Zone Cross Country Carnival at Byron Bay on Friday 31st of May, good luck! Keep training boys and girls, the athletics carnival is just around the corner.Mrs Ross

Apply online for free school travel in rural and regional NSWYou only need to complete one form, even for journeys using more than one bus company. It’s now easier for schools and bus companies, as Transport for NSW handles the applications.

Who can applyTo be eligible for free school travel, students may need to live a minimum distance from their school:

Years K-2 (Infants)There’s no minimum distance.

Years 3-6 (Primary)More than 1.6km straight line distance or at least 2.3km walking.

Years 7-12 (Secondary)More than 2.0km straight line distance or at least 2.9km walking.

Who needs to applyYou only need to apply if the student has never been approved for free school travel before. Students in a shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody) should submit a separate application for both addresses.

How to update your details You need to update student details online if the student is changing their name, address, school or campus, or their Transport operator. You can update them at apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updatedetails#/updateDetails

How to apply for free travel for the first time You can apply for free school travel for next year from the start of Term 4 this year.

Step 1Once you have enrolled your child at the new school, apply online by giving your home address and telling us which bus company the student needs to travel with between home and school. You can apply online at apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/home#/howToApply

Step 2 The school then confirms to us that your details are correct.

Step 3We will then work on your application. You will get an email confirming if the student is approved for free travel. If so, we will tell your local bus company who may send a school travel pass (if needed) to your school or, in some cases, the bus company will contact you directly about travel arrangements.

A parent or guardian must apply for students aged 15 years and under. Students who are 16 years and over must apply for themselves.

What will my card look likeFrequently asked questionsDoes the approved free travel include travel outside school hours?Approved free school travel is only for travel to and from school. So for travel after hours, on weekends or during school holidays, students will need to buy a ticket.

What if there’s no public transport in my area?In areas where there is no public transport, you may be able to get a subsidy for driving the student to school. For details visit transportnsw.info/school-students

How do I apply if the student needs to travel from two addresses because the parents live separately? Each parent (or the student if aged 16 or over) needs to apply separately for each address. The same minimum distances apply.
