deseo de servicio, aunado a la capacidad de aplicar leyes y procedimientos que per-mitan la vigilancia y orden en esta comu-nidad que es tan diversa”.

Y precisamente por esa diversidad es que se hace más hincapié en aquellas mujeres que deseen aceptar esta invitación.

En este sentido, habrá que indicar que du-rante mucho tiempo, especialistas policiales en todo el país han aseverado que incremen-tar el número de mujeres policías es clave para el éxito de las metas comunitarias de la policía, así como esencial para manejar más adecuadamente los crímenes de violencia doméstica y violación.

Estudios realizados en las últimas dos décadas han revelado consistentemente que las mujeres le imprimen un estilo único y muy beneficioso al trabajo policial. Más sobresaliente es la habilidad de las mujeres de lograr, verbalmente, mitigar situacio-nes volátiles. En comparación con hombre policías, las mujeres presentan tasas signifi-cativamente menores de uso de fuerza exce-siva y de tiroteos que involucran a oficiales de policía, así como una menor tasa de que-jas por parte de la comunidad.

Hay que subrayar que las mujeres y los latinos en general son vitales en este proyec-to de reclutamiento que se ha de llevar en Omaha, pues es necesario que en las fuerzas policiales de la ciudad haya más elementos pertenecientes a las minorías que se desea servir de manera eficiente.

Sobre lo peligroso que pueda resultar esta profesión, hay un mito dañino que prom-

ueve esta idea errónea. Según estadísticas del Departamento de Trabajo, el trabajo policial presenta tasas relativamente bajas de fatalidades ocupacionales. Las tasas de fatalidad en este tipo de empleo son com-parables a las que se observa en ocupacio-nes tan comunes como las de electricistas, constructores o choferes. Además, contrario a lo que suele creerse, la mitad de todas las fatalidades en el trabajo policial es causada por accidentes automovilísticos, no por ar-mas. Este mito de la peligrosidad impide que muchas personas tomen en consideración el trabajo policial como una carrera.

El teniente Barrios dijo que en la Policía se ofrecen salarios competitivos, aunado a grandes beneficios de incentivos para ir a la universidad, pago especial por ser bilingüe y buenas oportunidades de promoción y cre-cimiento profesional.

Ahora bien, es importante indicar que en esta campaña habrá también presenta-ciones especiales de reclutamiento llama-da, “detrás de la insignia”, lo cual permite un acercamiento más directo con los posi-bles solicitantes e incluso con los mismos padres de familia.

En estas charlas, se podrá hablar más abiertamente con los policías y con per-sonal de Recursos Humanos de la ciudad, Esto con la idea de entender el proceso de selección, lo cual permite incluso obtener un panorama claro de las exigencias de la academia de policía.

Los requisitos para aquellos interesados son: Estar graduado o tener G.E.D. Tener

21 años antes de finalizar la formación académica. Tener licencia de manejo. Test de drogas. Test psicológico. Pruebas médi-cas. Prueba del polígrafo, Investigación de antecedentes. No tener una condena por delito ni de violencia doméstica. Aprobar la prueba de Educación Básica para Adultos (TABE) a nivel de grado 11.

En resumen, ser un policía es una excelente carrera. Muchos hombres y mujeres han descubierto que el trabajo policial ofrece una combinación de di-versos desafíos, buen salario y benefi-cios, además de un significativo involu-cramiento en la comunidad.

Por ello, es importante que incluso los padres de familia motiven a sus hijos para que conozcan las oportunidades que brinda este campo de trabajo, que en Omaha esta en una nueva etapa de reclutamiento.

Si usted tiene un gran sentido del de-ber y la justicia, si le gusta proteger a sus semejantes y las tareas relacionadas con la investigación, prepararse para ser un Policía puede ser una muy buena opción, y en Omaha está por comenzar una cam-paña de reclutamiento.

El teniente Gregg Barrios, del Departa-mento de Policía de Omaha, a cargo de la investigación de historial y de la Unidad de Reclutamiento, informó que todos son bienvenidos a comunicarse y pedir más información que les permita decidirse por esta profesión.

Dijo también que este verano comenzará una nueva Clase Recluta, por lo cual se es-tarán recibiendo solicitudes del 21 de sep-tiembre al 2 de noviembre de este 2015.

Cabe indicar que el Departamento de Policía de Omaha siempre a manifestado su orgullo ante la diversidad que hay en su fuerza de trabajo, lo cual permite proporcio-nar a los ciudadanos de la ciudad un varia-do, dinámico y confiable grupo de trabajo.

Studies from the last two decades have consistently revealed that women provide a unique and beneficial way of doing police work. Something to highlight is a women’s skill to verbally appease volatile situations. In comparison to male police officers, wo-men have significantly lower rates for use of excessive force and for shootings involving police officers, as well as a lower complaint rate from the community.

We must mention that women and La-tinos are vital for this recruitment project that will take place in Omaha because it is imperative that the police departments in the city include more police officers from the minorities they wish to serve more efficiently.

Regarding the dangers of this profession, there is a damaging myth that promotes the wrong idea. According to data from the Department of Labor, working as a police officer is safe and has similar fatality rates to those from other lines of work. The fa-tality rates for police officers are compa-rable to those from regular jobs for electri-cians, construction workers or drivers. On top of that, and contrary to what is usually believed by many, half of all deaths on the job as a police officer are caused by car ac-cidents, not by guns. This myth about the dangers of working as a police officer is what keeps many people from considering this as a viable career opportunity.

Lieutenant Barrios said that the police offer competitive salaries as well as great benefits with incentives to go to college, special payments for being bilingual, as well as great opportunities for promotions and professional growth.

It is important that we mention that for this campaign some special recruitment presentations will also be taking place. They are to be called “Behind the Badge,” and they will allow the police to connect with poten-tial applicants and with parents.

During said events, potential applicants will be able to talk with police officers and with the city’s Human Resources staff so that they can better understand the recruitment process and the requirements for enrolling in the police academy.

Said requirements are: Having graduated or have a G.E.D., being 21 years old before the end of the academic education, having a driver’s license, passing a drug test, passing a psychological test, passing a medical test, passing a polygraph test, passing a back-ground check, not having been convicted of a crime or for domestic violence, passing a Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE) at an eleventh grade level.

All in all, becoming a police officer is a great career choice. Many men and women have discovered that working as a police of-ficer is a combination of facing several chal-lenges while having access to a great salary and benefits and to being very involved with the community.

Because of this, it is important that pa-rents motivate their sons and daughters so that they can get to know the opportunities from working in this field.

If you have a sense of duty and justice, want to protect other individuals and like to do tasks related to investigating, then it might be a good idea to prepare to become a police officer, and in Omaha a recruit-ment drive is about to start.

Lieutenant Gregg Barrios of the Oma-ha Police Department (OPD), who is in charge of background checks and of the Recruitment Unit, has let everyone know they’re welcome to request more infor-mation that can allow them to decide to become a police officer.

He also said that the new Recruit Class will start this summer and that applica-tions will be received from September 21 to November 2, 2015.

We must also mention that the OPD has always been proud of the diversity of its members since allows them to serve citizens thanks to a diverse, dynamic and reliable team.

Lieutenant Barrios highlighted that “the OPD wishes to find men and women who have a strong sense of service, and who are ready to uphold the law in order to watch over and protect the city’s di-verse community.”

La sala de conferencias grande en el Centro de Enlace Comunitario Barbara Weitz se llenó con más de 100 líderes locales, académicos, estudiantes e invitados de la comunidad el miércoles 16 de septiembre. Asistentes

ayudaron a la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha a celebrar el Mes de La Herencia Hispana durante el evento esa noche, donde Julissa Arce de Define América presento un discurso de motivación sobre la inmigración. Arce, ex vicepresidente de Goldman Sachs fue una soñadora que logró subir la es-calera en Wall Street sin documentación legal. Arce dejó su trabajo en Wall Street para unirse a Define America para compartir su historia con la nación y para abogar por los jóvenes indocumentados en los Estados Unidos.

“Me daba miedo subirme al autobús Greyhound,” recordó Julissa Arce, mientras hablaba de los viajes de fin de semana que tenía que hacer de Austin a San Antonio durante sus días en la universidad para vender pastelitos para pagar su matrícula. Arce señaló que subirse a ese autobús los fines de semana no solamente la daba miedo por la gente vaga en el autobús, sino también porque en ese momento las personas indocumentadas no podían abrir cuentas bancarias por lo que se vio obligada a llevar dinero en efectivo en su mochila. Arce compartió que después de haber sido aceptado en la universidad no sabía cómo iba a pagar por ella porque ella era indocumentada y no calificaba para becas o ayuda finan-ciera. Arce finalmente encontró su respuesta, pagaría por la escuela con los fondos de los pastelitos que vendía.

“Con el tiempo ahorré el dinero suficiente para comprar un coche. Era increíble, pero también aterrador, porque cada vez que me puse detrás del volante de un coche estaba

rompiendo la ley,” dijo Arce, quien agregó “yo no tenía una licencia de conducir de manera que hacer el viaje de setenta millas cada fin de semana fue realmente muy aterrador.” Al igual que muchos otros soñadores en los Estados Unidos, Arce fue traída a los Estados Unidos desde México a una edad temprana por sus padres. Mientras que muchas otras personas de su edad estaban obteniendo sus cuentas bancar-ias, licencias de conducir, y estaban solicitando ayuda finan-ciera para la universidad, ella, al igual que otros soñadores se empezó a enfrentar a una multitud de barreras a causa de su situación jurídica.

Arce dijo que muchos soñadores no tienen las mismas oportunidades que sus compañeros de clase debido a que algunos estados prohíben que los soñadores asistan a la uni-versidad en sus estados. “Ir a la universidad es un sueño in-alcanzable para ellos,” dijo Arce. Según la ex vicepresidente de Goldman Sachs las limitaciones no se detienen ahí. “Hay sólo diez estados más que DC y Puerto Rico que dan licen-cias a los estudiantes indocumentados,” dijo Arce, quien agregó “Nebraska fue el último estado de levantar la pro-hibición contra los destinatarios DACA para obtener una licencia de conducir, incluso después de Arizona.”

Mientras aún estaba en la universidad Arce dijo que ella se aferró a la esperanza de que el Dream Act se apro-bara antes de que ella se graduara. Ella esperaba obtener una tarjeta de residencia y permiso de trabajo en el mo-mento en que ella se graduara, sin embargo, cuando llegó ese día, el Dream Act no se había pasado y ella comenzó a preocuparse por su futuro incierto.

“El Dream Act habría permitido a la gente como yo, un camino a la ciudadanía,” dijo Arce. Hasta el día de hoy no

ha sido aprobado. Aunque el gobierno ofrece DACA, Arce señaló que esto es sólo un programa federal de dos años que da a la gente un permiso de trabajo por dos años, pero no es un camino a la ciudadanía. Arce agregó que mucha gente tiene miedo de aplicar para DACA ya que el programa podría ser disuelto en pocos años debido a la controversia que lo rodea.

Después de graduarse de la universidad Goldman Sachs le extendió una generosa oferta a Arce, sin poder confiar en el Dream Act, se vio obligada a utilizar los documentos falsos que había comprado cuando estaba en la escuela. Arce recuerda que no sabía si iba a pasar la verificación de an-tecedentes para obtener su licencia de comercio. Ella temía que se la llevaran en esposas.

Arce tuvo suerte y nunca se la llevaron en esposas, en lugar de eso fue promovida a vicepresidente de Goldman Sachs a la edad de 27. “Yo era la prueba viva del sueño amer-icano,” dijo Arce.

Muchos profesionales jóvenes indocumentados tienen una historia similar a la de Arce, pero no todos ellos re-ciben la misma suerte y, eventualmente, pueden obtener la documentación legal como Arce. Un sistema de in-migración que no ofrece a los inmigrantes indocumen-tados un camino a la ciudadanía continúa y continuará a mantener a muchos detrás. Por estas razones Arce y Define America continúan compartiendo sus historias poderosas para que puedan ayudar a cambiar la conver-sación en torno a los inmigrantes y fomentar la nación para arreglar el sistema de inmigración roto. The brightly lit large confer-ence room at the Barbara Weitz Community Engage-ment Center was filled with over 100 local leaders,

scholars, students and community guests on Wednesday, September 16. Attendees helped the University of Nebraska at Omaha celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month during the evening event where Julissa Arce of Define America delivered a motivational speech about immi-gration. Arce, former Vice-President of Gold-man Sachs was a college dreamer that managed to climb the ladder in Wall Street without le-gal documentation. Arce left her job on Wall Street to join Define American to share her story with the nation and to advocate for un-documented youth in the United States.

“Getting on that Greyhound bus was a lit-tle scary,” recalled Julissa Arce, as she talked about the weekend trips she would have to make from Austin to San Antonio during her college days to go sell funnel cakes to pay for her tuition. Arce pointed out that getting on that bus on the weekends wasn’t just scary because of the sketchy people on the bus but also because at that time undocumented peo-ple could not open bank accounts so she was forced to carry cash in her backpack. Arce shared that after being accepted into college she didn’t know how she was going to pay for it because she was undocumented and would not qualify for scholarships or financial aid. Arce eventually found her answer, she would pay for school with the proceeds of her little funnel cake stand.

“Eventually I saved enough money to buy a car. It was amazing but also terrifying be-cause every time I got behind the wheel of a car I was breaking the law,” said Arce, add-ing “I didn’t have a driver’s license so mak-ing that seventy mile commute every week-end was really incredibly terrifying.” Like so many other dreamers in the United States, Arce was brought over from Mexico to the United States at a young age by her parents. While many other people her age were ob-taining their bank accounts, their driver’s licenses, and applying for financial aid, she, like other dreamers started to face a multi-tude of barriers because of their legal status.

Arce said that many dreamers don’t have the same opportunities as their fellow classmates because some states ban dreamers from at-tending university in their states, “going to col-lege is something they can never event dream of,” said Arce. According to the former Gold-man Sachs Vice President the limitations don’t stop there. “There are only ten states plus D.C and Puerto Rico that give licenses to undocu-mented students,” said Arce, adding “Nebraska was the last state to lift the ban against DACA recipients from obtaining a driver’s license, even after Arizona.”

While she was still in college Arce said she held on to the hope that the Dream Act would be passed before she graduated. She expected to obtain a green card and a work permit by the time that she graduated, how-ever, when that day came, the Dream Act had not been passed and she began to worry about her uncertain future.

“The Dream Act would have allowed people like myself a path to citizenship,” said Arce. To this day it has not been passed. Although the government offers DACA, Arce pointed out that this is just a two year federal program that gives people a work permit for two years but it is not a pathway to citizenship. Arce added that a lot of people are scared to apply for it because it might be taken away in a few years because of the controversy surrounding it.

After graduating college Goldman Sachs extended a generous offer to Arce, with no Dream Act to rely on, she was forced to use the fake documents she had purchased while she was in school. Arce remembers not knowing if she was going to pass her background check to get her trading license. She feared being taken away in handcuffs.

Arce got lucky and was never taken away in handcuffs, instead she was eventually promot-ed to Vice President of Goldman Sachs at the age of 27. “I was walking, living proof of the American Dream,” said Arce.

Many undocumented young professionals have a similar story to Arce’s but not all of them get as lucky and can eventually obtain legal documentation like Arce. A broken immigra-tion system that does not offer undocumented immigrants a pathway to citizenship continues and will continue to hold many back. For this reasons Arce and Define America continue to share powerful stories so they can help shift the conversation around immigrants and encour-age the nation to fix the broken immigration system. LOS COMISIONADOS MUÑOZ Y SANTOS SE RETIRAN DE NLAC

Los comisionados Gisella Muñoz de Bellevue y Jose Santos de Gretna se retiraron de la Mesa Directiva de Comisionados de NLAC.

Cuando Santos se retiró como Investigador de Leyes de Trabajo y como coordinador de los Derechos de los Trabajadores en las plantas empacadoras de carne con el Departamento del Trabajo, también se retiró como representante nominado por el gobernador a la Mesa Directiva de NLAC. Mas adelante se le ofreció y aceptó una posición de Investigador de leyes de trabajo para el estado. En el 2000, un cuerpo especial visitó las diferentes empacadoras de carne como observa-dores. Santos fue parte de ese cuerpo especial y mas adelante ayudaron a realizar una propuesta de ley sobre derechos para los trabajadores de las plantas empacadoras en el estado de Nebraska, y obtuvo el título de Coordinador de los derechos de las empacadoras de carne.

Gisella Muñoz fue nominada en el 2009 por el gober-nador de ese tiempo, Dave Heineman, como represent-ante de Bellevue y el área metropolitana de Omaha.

Muñoz es originaria de Lima, Perú y es graduada de la Universidad de San Martin de Porres, una universidad privada en Lima. Recibió su título de leyes y ciencia políticas en 1995 y su Doctorado de la universidad de leyes en 1996.

Cuando se mudó a Omaha en septiembre de 1999, trabajó en diferentes áreas de servicio a cli-ente y recursos humanos y como consejera en la Universidad de Bellevue.

Muñoz se retiró de la comisión en mayo, 2015 y continua residiendo en Omaha y trabajando como paralegal en la firma de abogados Marks, Clare & Richards, LLC.

Este sábado 19 de septiembre se realizó el segundo Festival La-tino organizado por el Centro Latino de Council Bluffs, Iowa. Sofía Sandoval, coordinadora de

esta organización no lucrativa y el Comité Fuer-za y Unión, prepararon una gran fiesta gratuita para la comunidad, uniéndose a las celebracio-nes del Mes de la Herencia Hispana que con-memora la independencia de varias naciones entre ellas Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, México y Chile.

“Gracias a Dios estamos creciendo – expresó Sandoval -, lo cual es muy bueno pero igual-mente nos trae muchas responsabilidades. Es por eso que estamos en la búsqueda de un director que tenga un perfil bilingüe y que conozca no únicamente a la cultura latina, sino las características esenciales de los diferentes países que aquí están representados”.

El Centro Latino atraviesa por un periodo no sólo de expansión, sino además de cambios notables: “Ahora por ejemplo, al vernos limita-dos en nuestros grants (apoyos económicos), ya no podemos ofrecer el cuidado de los niños que antes brindábamos. Para mi esto es muy preocupante porque era mi manera de apoyar a los padres para que ellos pudieran salir a pre-pararse, ya que la educación de nuestros inmi-grantes es lo que más me importa”.

Sandoval comentó que pese a las limitaciones, el Centro Latino sigue ofreciendo servicios le-gales en colaboración con Justicia para Nuestros Vecinos y Iowa Legal Aid: “Sabemos que existen muchas necesidades en la comunidad latina, pero aunque quisiéramos no podemos hacerlo todo, así

que tenemos que enfocarnos en lo que hacemos mejor que es atender las cuestiones legales”.

Los servicios del Centro Latino son gratuitos y en particular tienen mucha demanda las clases de ciudadanía, por ser el único lugar en donde se ofrecen en Council Bluffs, dos veces a la semana tanto en la mañana como por la noche: “Tenemos ya a 9 ciudadanos que se prepararon aquí y dos de ellos son personas ya mayores”.

Y a propósito de la población adulta, Sandoval siempre se ha preocupado por darles un espacio especial en sus actividades, por lo que el Festival Latino o Latin Fest de este año giró alrededor del tema “Un paso a la tercera edad”: “Muchos abuelitos llegaron aquí hace años pero a otros los trajeron sus familiares ya siendo mayores. Lo malo es que no tienen tiempo para cuidarlos y los dejan encerrados, pero debemos recordar que es nuestra obligación cuidar de nuestros ancianos y llevarlos a lugares donde se sientan vivos, ya que existen muchos programas para ellos”.

Además de contar con información al respecto, el evento de igual manera ofreció entretenimiento para los niños y muchas mesas educativas para los padres de familia: “Nuestro Festival se carac-teriza por ser un festival educativo enfocado en la comunidad latina pero abierto a todo el público, donde contamos con la presencia de la policía y los bomberos, la clínica y el colegio comunitarios y la biblioteca pública y los museos. Queremos que nuestros inmigrantes interactúen con ellos y que sepan que están aquí para servirles”.

Entre juegos inflables, rifas, vasitos con frutas y verduras frescas y saludables, así como los hot-dogs obsequiados por la tienda Hy-Vee local, los abuelitos y sus hijos y nietos, se divirtieron apre-

ndiendo sobre diversas organizaciones de salud y jugaron la tradicional lotería mexicana.

“Fuimos muy afortunados al estar apoyados primera vez por un patrocinador, Veridian Credit Union que se encuentra en Des Moines y está a punto de abrir un banco en Council Bluffs”, ex-plicó Sandoval al tiempo que agregó que la plane-ación y preparación del programa estuvo a cargo del Comité Fuerza y Unión.

“Ellos son padres de familia que se dan un tiem-po para seguir preparándose - comentó Sandoval -, y además buscan lo mejor para su comunidad. Por eso el Centro necesita de personas como el-los, y también de voluntarios que quieran ayudar dando clases de inglés y de computación y princi-palmente de abogados civiles”.

Con un 95% de clientes femeninos, el Centro La-tino ha ayudado a clientes no sólo locales sino de otras ciudades como Shenandoah y Oakland, así como de Omaha, en el estado vecino de Nebraska.

“Estoy feliz de poder ayudarlos a todos, pero este es un trabajo que requiere de mucha dedicación, de mucho corazón, de estar pendiente de la comu-nidad y ver las necesidades que otros no pueden ver”, concluyó Sandoval.

HELP THE SOUTH HIGH MAGNET SCHOOL BAND GO TO WASHINGTON D.C.

The south High Magnet School Marching Band is trying to raise money so they can march in a Memorial Day parade in Washington D.C. and it’s an uphill fight.

Omaha’s South High School band has been nomi-nated by Congressman Brad Ashford to represent Nebraska in the 75th annual Memorial Day parade in Washington D.C. on May 30th, 2016. In addition to this nomination, they have been selected to be Nebraska’s High School Band representative in the prestigious event. This event will take place in Nebraska’s capitol before a street audience. The parade will be broadcast on the Discovery’s Military Channel and American troops around the world.

COMMISSIONERS MUÑOZ AND SANTOS RETIRED FROM NLAC

Commissioners Gisella Muñoz of Bellevue and Jose Santos of Gretna have retired from the Nebraska Latino American Commission Board of Commissioners.

When Santos retired as Labor Law Investigator and Nebraska Meatpacking Bill of Rights Coordinator with the Dept. of Labor in 2015, he also retired as the Governor’s representative on the NLAC board. He had served as the Governor’s representative since he was working at the university’s military affairs and job ser-vices department when he was offered and accepted the position of Labor Law Investigator with the state. In 2000, a task force visited meatpacking plants for observation. Santos was with the task force. Santos and the task force helped draw up the Bills of Rights for meatpacking plant workers in the state, and the title of Meatpacking Bills of Rights Coordinator was added to his job title.

Gisella Muñoz was appointed in 2009 by then-Gov-ernor Dave Heineman, representing Bellevue and the Omaha metro area. Muñoz is originally from Lima, Peru and attended the University de San Martin de Porres, a private university in Lima. She received her bachelor’s degree in Law and Political Science in 1995 and her Juris Doctor from the university’s law school in 1996. After graduation, she worked as a legal assistant at PetroPeru and thereafter as a manager and tax auditor at ESSALUD Social Security.

She immigrated to Omaha in September 1999 and has worked in different settings including cus-tomer service, human resources and as an admissions counselor at Bellevue University. In 2007, she gradu-ated from Bellevue University with a master’s degree in Communication Studies. She returned to the legal field in 2012 as a paralegal with Peck Law Firm.

Muñoz’s term as commissioner ended in May 2015. She continues to reside in Omaha with her family and is currently a paralegal at Marks, Clare, & Richards, LLC law firm.

Saturday, September 19 was the date for the second Latin Fest organized by the Centro Latino of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Sofia Sandoval, co-ordinator for this non-profit and

part of the Fuerza y Union Committee, worked hard to prepare a large and free party for the community, joining the celebrations for the Hispanic Heritage Month that commemorates the independence of several countries, includ-ing Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Hon-duras, México and Chile.

“Thankfully we continue to grow,” said San-doval, “which is good but it also increases our responsibilities. It is why we’re looking for a bi-lingual director who knows not only the Latino culture but also the key characteristics for each of the countries represented here.”

The Centro Latino is going through a period of expansion as well as of outstanding changes: “For example, since we are limited in our grants, we no longer can offer the care for children that we used to provide. For me, this is a great concern because it was my way of supporting parents so that they could continue to prepare themselves because educating our immigrants is what matters the most.”

Sandoval mentioned that despite the limi-tations, the Centro Latino continues to offer legal services in collaboration with Justice for Our Neighbors and Iowa Legal Aid: “We know that there are many needs in the Latino com-munity, but even though we wish we could help we can’t do everything, so we must, there-fore, focus on what we do best, and that is to provide them with legal aid.”

The services of the Centro Latino are com-pletely free. Their citizenship services are in high demand because it’s the only place in Council Bluffs that offers them, twice a week (in the morning and at night): “We already have nine citizens who prepared for it here, and two of them are elderly individuals.”

And speaking of the elderly, Sandoval has al-ways tried to have a special place for them in their activities, which is why the theme for this year’s Latin Fest was A Step to Seniority: “Sev-eral grandparents came here many years ago, but others were brought here by their family. The problem is they don’t have the time to take care of them, and they lock them down. We must remember that it is our obligation to care for our elders and take them to places where they can feel alive, and we have many programs for them.”

The event, on top of providing information about this, also offered entertainment for kids as well as many education roundtables for par-ents: “Our festival is characterized by being an educational festival with a focus on the Latino community, but it is open to everyone. We have the presence of police officers and firefighters, of members from a clinic and community col-leges, as well as from the public library and sev-eral museums. We want our immigrants to in-teract with them so that they can know they’re here to serve them.”

Among the inflatable toys, raffles, cups with fruit and the fresh and healthy vegetables, as well as the hot dogs donated by the local Hy-Vee, all grandparents and their children and grandsons and granddaughters had a lot

of fun learning about several healthcare orga-nizations as well as by playing the traditional Mexican Loteria.

“We were very lucky to have a sponsor help us for the first time, Veridian Credit Union in Des Moines, which is about to open a bank in Coun-cil Bluffs,” explained Sandoval, adding that all planning and preparations for the programs was in charge of the Fuerza y Union Committee.

“They are parents who take the time to contin-ue preparing themselves,” said Sandoval, “and they also try to do what’s best for the commu-nity. This is why the Centro needs more people like them as well as volunteers who want to help by teaching English and computer classes, and we definitely need civil law lawyers.”

With a clientele that is 95% female, the Centro Latino has helped not only local clients but also clients from other cities such as Shenandoah and Oakland, as well as from the city of Omaha in the neighbor state of Nebraska.

“I’m happy to be able to help them all, because this is a job that requires a lot of dedication and a lot of heart, and one needs to be aware of the community in order to observe the needs that others can’t see,” concluded Sandoval.
