Vipers lose but Omaha wins in city’s indoor soccer debut

Is it soccer or something else? The ques-tion comes easily when you consider the Omaha Vipers and professional indoor

soccer.The answer is a bit more difficult.More than 5,000 people showed up at

the Civic Auditorium last Sunday to see just what the Vipers and this game were all about as the team made its Omaha debut in a 12-11 loss to the Missouri Comets.

In the four months since announcing that the Major Indoor Soccer League was coming to Omaha the Vipers principal owner, Frank Onate, along with co-owners Jose Ramon Munoz and general manager Sam Coughlin built a soccer team with all of the interna-tional flavor you’d expect from the world’s most popular game.

The nearly 200 foot field at the Civic Au-ditorium was ringed with flags from Argen-tina, Mali, Chile, Nigeria, Brazil, Mexico and the other countries represented on the multicultural roster. On paper, it doesn’t look much different from your average pro-fessional soccer roster made up of local stars and international veterans.

On the field you get something closer to soccer concentrate, a potent and powerful version of the beautiful game made more immediate by the presence of four walls, three-point goals, fast-paced action and power plays. It’s a lot of soccer mixed with a

little of just about everything else--hockey, basketball, racquetball, dodge ball, lacrosse.

This is a passer’s game. It would have been priceless to see a Pele or Maradona play this brand of indoor soccer because creativity is the most necessary requirement of a superstar in the sport. The tight confines of the field place a premium on teamwork and moving the ball quickly. Ball skills are necessary to keep possession but there’s not much room for dribbling.

Early on Omaha seemed to understand that more than Missouri. The Vipers had defeated the Comets 14-10 in their season opener in Kansas City two days earlier and was dominating play in the first half again Sunday, peppering the Mis-souri goal with shots while spending most of the first 30 minutes with the ball in the opposing half. A brilliant three-point strike from the wing by Chile Farias was the Vipers only goal but it was enough to stake them to a 3-2 halftime lead.

Two goals isn’t the norm for the MISL, but that would change in the second half. The Comets scored with 12 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, seconds after the Vipers had killed a power play. Omaha answered a minute later with a Frederico Moojen goal off a Farias assist to reclaim the lead 5-4.

The teams traded goals again in the third period before Omaha really got creative. A beautiful back heel pass from Mauricio Curiel Hernandez freed up Eduardo Suarez to slot a shot home in front of goal giving the Vipers a 9-6 lead. The individual play of the game, the type of play you only see in indoor soccer, came next.

With eight minutes remaining, Farias received a pass from Andre Gusavo Sandri Silva just outside the box on the left wing. Turning towards goal, Farias played a rico-

chet pass off the back wall, weaved through the tangle of legs and bodies in the crease to reclaim the ball and finished with a sliding shot into the bottom right corner. Now trail-ing by three goals, the Comets pulled their goalie in favor of a sixth attacker.

And that’s about the only thing that wasn’t right about the Vipers Omaha debut. The Comets mounted a furious rally, scor-ing three goals in less than five minutes to steal a 12-11 win.

Despite the loss, team officials remained upbeat about the sports official unveiling in Omaha.

“It’s a pretty exciting game,” Munoz says. “I think people really enjoyed today and I think they’ll come back. Its professional soccer and the level of play is high. We just hope people give us a chance to show what we have here.”

On the field after the game, Coughlin was pleased with the fan response.

“We knew the first experience was go-ing to be important so we hoped everybody liked what they saw,” Coughlin says. “Obvi-ously we didn’t get the score that we wanted but when you look into the crowd everyone was into it. We know it’s a great product but you’ve got to get it out to the Omaha com-munity and show them.”

Is it soccer or something else? With one home game in the books, the answer is likely both or maybe it doesn’t matter at all.

The MISL is a lot of things but more than anything it has the reason we watch sports—it’s exciting.

MCC boosts sustainable energy programMetropolitan Community College is poised to train

the next generation of sustainable energy and renew-able technology workers after receiving a $318,000 grant from the Nebraska Energy Office.

The school plans to complete a new solar training lab — heated entirely through solar power — by 2011 at its South Omaha campus. MCC will begin offering degree and certificate programs in solar and sustainable energy technology next year.

Michael Shonka, an MCC instructor, says Nebraska has the resources necessary to become a sustainable energy leader but must build a workforce capable of harnessing that potential.

“If we can educate a workforce about the importance of renewable energy technologies, we can reduce the energy trade deficit in this state,” he says.

Nebraska ranks ninth in solar energy potential, according to the National Resource Defense Council.

American citizens file complaint against ICE in Omaha sting

Two U.S. citizens are planning to sue to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union after they were searched and detained in an Omaha parking lot last April.

Arquimides Bautista, 20, and Rosalba Artimas, 46, were detained while on a bus trip from Denver to Omaha for a business convention. The incident began after ICE agents overheard the group speaking at a local McDonald’s.

Hans Mayer, an ACLU attorney representing Bautista and Artimas, says the ICE had no legal basis for demanding proof of citizenship.

ICE reports that 36 of 42 passengers on the bus were undocumented immigrants. All 36 were eventually released and ordered to appear before a federal immigration judge.

Livestock Exchange gets new neighborsThe look of one of the most storied sites in

South Omaha is changing.By 2012 the Livestock Exchange Building

will be flanked by two new four-story buildings offering health care services and senior citizen housing. OneWorld Community Health Centers, which currently occupies the first four floors in the Livestock Exchange Building, will operate the two new centers.

The $15 million project is funded primarily through a federal grant awarded to the state as part of the new healthcare law.

Este 2010 la organización Boys Scouts of America (BSA, por su sigla en Inglés), cum-plió 100 años de su fundación y en todo el

país, se celebraron eventos conmemorando lo que se ha convertido en el programa más conocido de valores basados en el entrenamiento para el lider-azgo entre niños y jóvenes.

El Mid-America Council al que pertenece Ne-braska, se unió al festejo con todos los distritos que lo conforman como el Distrito Lewis and Clark, al que pertenece Omaha.

Precisamente Marco Lara, Ejecutivo de Distrito del Scoutreach del Sur, hizo historia llevando por primera vez a un grupo de niños latinos a la celebración: “La planeación de los 100 años de los Boys Scouts se inició desde hace más o menos tres años, justo por el tiempo en el que entré también a colaborar con ellos”.

Lara recordó que fueron muchas las juntas a las que asistió para organizar el encuentro en la zona que le corresponde, y que en cada una su mayor deseo fue integrar a los niños latinos para que conocieran más y mejor, la filosofía de los Scouts: “Nuestra meta era llevar a unos 100 pequeñines latinos al festejo de los 100 años, pero desafortu-nadamente aunque el costo era de sólo $15, única-mente asistimos con un grupo de 60, entre padres e hijos, porque aún existe mucha desinformación al respecto de los Boys Scouts entre los latinos”.

Aún así, pese a la falta de conocimiento entre la comunidad latina al respecto de los programas de los Scouts, Lara y sus colaboradores, contando con el apoyo de la escuela primaria Babe Gómez, se dieron cita la mañana del 9 de octubre, afuera del Kroc Center, para viajar hasta el lugar donde vivirían un día completo de actividades.

“A nivel del Concilio al que pertenecemos y según el área que nos corresponde – explicó Lara -, la celebración de los 100 años de los Boys Scouts tuvo lugar un fin de semana completo, del 8 al 10 de octubre pasado. Pero dado que entre nuestra gente no se tiene la cultura de acampar, nosotros sólo llevamos a los participantes (niños de los 6 a los 10 años y sus papás) a las actividades del sába-do. Fue un día largo pues regresamos a las 9 de la noche, ¡pero todos quedaron muy contentos con lo que aprendieron!”.

Asistentes de Nebraska y Iowa, “y hasta de Kan-sas y South Dakota, que aunque no pertenecen a nuestra zona, quisieron unirse por quedarles más cerca”, fueron partícipes de una serie de activi-dades diseñadas para cada nivel de Scouts.

“El grupo de niños que llevé, no pertenece a los Scouts tradicionales – dijo Lara -, sino que partic-ipan en el programa que tengo en varias escuelas, después de clase. Estos chiquitines participaron en varios juegos, en actividades de recreación y más. Sus padres también gozaron del entreten-imiento musical y otros espectáculos. Hubieron fuegos artificiales, la presencia de la Reserva Na-cional, y se calcula que asistieron 8.000 personas. El haber logrado la participación de las familias latinas para mi fue un éxito, y entre lo que más les gustó estuvieron la pared para escalar, el tiro al blanco con rifle, y las carreras con los famosos carritos de madera donde recibieron premios”.

Lara continúa buscando voluntarios para asi-stirlo en el programa del próximo 2011: “Volver-emos a participar en las carreras de carritos, y mi idea es hacer dos campamentos para latinos. Ac-tualmente son unos 600 niños los que participan en el programa escolar que tengo, pero necesita-mos llegar hasta sus hogares para que sus padres sepan de qué se trata”.

Para cumplir con dicha tarea, Lara cuenta con personas como Reyna Vallecillo, “quien colaboró junto con toda su familia como voluntarios en el festejo de los 100 años”, y Rosenda Ovalle, mi-embro del Comité que apoya a Lara y encargada de reunir fondos para el crecimiento del mismo: “Además de educar más a las familias latinas so-bre este programa, también necesitamos patroci-nadores, empresas o individuos que nos ayuden económicamente o con cosas para los niños. Yo como madre de familia veo que esto es buenísimo ¡y que puede ayudar mucho a los niños latinos!”.

Ciudadanos Americanos presentan demanda contra ICE por redada en Omaha

Dos ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos estan pla-neando demandar a la agencia de Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE, por sus sigla en Inglés) con la ayuda de American Civil Liberties Union después de que fueron requisados y detenidos en un estacionamiento de Omaha el pasado mes de abril.

Arquimides Bautista, de 20 años, y Rosalba Artimas, de 46 años, fueron detenidos mientras via-jaban en bus de Denver a Omaha a una convención de negocios. El incidente comenzó después de que agentes de ICE escucharon una conversación del grupo en un McDonald’s local.

Hans Mayer, un abogado de ACLU quien representa a Bautista y Artimas, dice que ICE no contaba con bases legales para solicitar prueba de ciudadanía.

ICE reporta que 36 de los 42 pasajeros en el bus eran inmigrantes indocumentados. Todos 36 fueron even-tualmente dejados en libertad y se les ordenó presen-tarse en la corte ante un juez federal de inmigración.

El edificio Livestock Exchange tendrá nuevos vecinos

La vista de uno de los sitios más historicos en el sur de Omaha va a cambiar.

Para el 2012 el edificio Livestock Exchange estará rodeado por dos nuevos edificios de 4 pisos que ofre-cerán servicios de salud y vivienda para personas de la tercera edad. El One World Community Health Center que actualmente ocupa el primer piso del edificio Livestock Exchange administrará los dos centros nuevos.

El proyecto de $15 millones financiado principal-mente a través de un subsidio federal otorgado al estado como parte de la nueva ley de salud.

MCC impulsa programa de energía sostenible

El Metropolitan Community College (MCC, por sus sigla en Inglés) se esta preparando para entrenar a la próxima generación de trabajadores en energía sos-tenible y tecnología renovable después de recibir un subsidio de $318.000 de Nebraska Energy Office.

La escuela planea completar un nuevo laboratorio solar de entrenamiento, calentado enteramente a través de potencia solar, para el 2011 en el campo universitario del Sur de Omaha. MCC comenzará a ofrecer un título universitario y un programa certificado en tecnología de energía sostenible y solar el próximo año.

This is the 100th anniversary of the found-ing of the Boys Scouts of America (BSA) and throughout the country celebrations

are honoring the organization known for train-ing young men to be leaders with solid values.

The Mid-America Council, which includes Nebraska, joined the festivities with all the dis-tricts that belong to the Lewis and Clark dis-trict, which includes Omaha.

Marco Lara, district executive of Scoutreach South, made history by bringing for the first time a group of Latino boys to the celebration. “The planning for those 100 years of the Boy Scouts started more or less three years ago, just about the time that I started collaborating with them.”

Lara said he wanted to bring Latino boys into scouting and for them to learn the Scouts’ phi-losophy. “Our goal was to bring 100 Latino boys to the festival of 100 years, but unfortunately, al-though the cost was only $15, we only attended with a group of 60, between fathers and boys, be-cause there still exists a lot of misinformation with respect to the Boy Scouts among Latinos.”

Despite the lack of knowledge about the Scout program in the Latino community, Lara and his collaborators have the support of the Babe Gomez Elementary School, where they had an appointment on the morning of Oc-tober 9, outside the Kroc Center, to visit the place where they would participate in a full day of activities.

“At the level of the council that we belong to and according corresponding area we be-long to,” explained Lara, “the celebration of 100 years of the Boy Scouts took place over an entire weekend, from this past October 8-10. But given that among our people there is not a culture of camping, we only brought the participants (boys between 6 and 10 years old, with their fathers) to the activi-ties on Saturday. It was a long day and we returned at 9 at night, but everyone was left happy with all they had learned!”

Attendees from Nebraska and Iowa, “and as far away as Kansas and South Dakota, that although they don’t belong to our zone, wanted to join us so that we would be clos-er,” were participants in a series of activities for each level of Scouts.

“The group of boys that I brought did not belong to traditional Scouts,” said Lara, “but instead participated in the program that I have at various schools. These boys partici-pated in various games, recreation activities and more. Their fathers also enjoyed musi-cal entertainment and other events. There were artificial fires …and it was calculated that 8,000 people attended. Having achieved the participation of Latino families for me was a success, and what they enjoyed most was the rock wall, target shooting with the rifle, and the races with the famous wooden carts where they received prizes.”

Lara continues to look for volunteers to at-tend the program in 2011. “We will return to participate in the cart races, and my idea is to do two camping trips for Latinos. Right now

there are some 600 boys who participate in the after-school program that I have, but we need to bring it to their homes so that parents know what it’s all about.”

Lara has enlisted people like Reyna Val-lecillo, “who collaborated with her whole fam-ily as volunteers for the 100 years festival,” and Rosenda Ovalle, a member of the committee that supports Lara and is in charge of raising funds for the committee to grow. “More than educating Latino families about this program, we also need patrons, businesses or individu-als that help us economically or with things for the boys. I, as a mother, see that this a good thing, and that it helps Latino boys so much.”

La sonorense Letty Rivera continúa entrenando a “¡quienes no le tienen miedo a los costalazos!”.

La temida luchadora profesional lleva un año trabajando con luchadores, ¡que ya están listos para la próxima temporada del 2011!”.

Letty entrena en un garage donde “gra-cias al apoyo de Abraham, propietario de El T-quila, ahora ya contamos con un ring, ya que antes ¡entrenábamos sobre el suelo de cemento!”.

Ruda como siempre, Letty encabeza la organización OIW, conocida en espa-ñol como Lucha Libre Independiente de Omaha: “Ser luchadora no ha sido tan difícil como ser entrenadora, porque debo de inculcarles que se sientan como en una hermandad y se cuiden entre ellos, no importa que existan rivalidades sobre el ring, ¡afuera somos una familia!”.

Así pues, los fanáticos del deporte es-peran a personajes como Cruz de Angel, luchador técnico de 34 años, originario de Guanajuato: “Mi hijo fallecido se llam-aba Cruz y en honor a él tomé este nom-bre”. Cruz de Angel espera subirse pronto al ring, “¡para enfrentarme a La Amenaza y al Padrino!”.

El Padrino por su parte, señaló que “yo no le traigo ganas a ninguno, ¡pero acabo con el que se aviente!”. El Padrino nació en Aguascalientes y debe su nombre al hecho de “¡tener muchos ahijados!”. Sus peleas más recientes fueron con El Rum-berito y El Mago de Oz.

A propósito de El Mago de Oz, con tan sólo 24 años, es el más joven de los mexi-canos que entrenan bajo la dirección de Letty. El Mago de Oz es de Michoacán y es un luchador aéreo que ya dió muestras

de su talento enfrentándose a El Padrino y a La Momia.

Seguramente también se enfrentará a otro de los nuevos villanos, su paisano el luchador Silver Strong: “¡Yo soy el más fuerte de esta bola de nacos!”.

Silver Strong admira al Dr. Wagner y considera que sus dos hijas mayores, lo impulsan a derrotar a sus enemigos, “¡porque son bien rudas como yo!”.

A pesar de estar en su mismo bando, a Silver Strong le gustaría retar al Padrino o a La Amenaza: “¡Porque también en las luchas hay traiciones!”.

Al escuchar esto, La Amenaza simple-mente sonrió: “Qué puedo decir, ¡soy el mejor de todos!”.

Directamente de Monterrey, La Ame-naza tiene más de 10 años de carrera, “y no pueden contra mi ¡porque éstos to-davía están en pañales!”.

Abysmal, otro de los rudos que debutan próximamente, expresó estar decidido “¡a derrotar a todos los técnicos!”.

Descendiente de una familia de lucha-dores, Abysmal tiene entre sus fans a su hijita de tres años y a toda su familia, orginaria de Durango.

Y de Durango también es el nuevo réferi, conocido como “El Greñas”, admirador de grandes figuras como El Santo y Mil Más-caras: “Lo más difícil de dedicarse de esto es que cuando los luchadores están concentra-dos no se fijan a dónde sueltan los tranca-zos, ¡y me han llegado a lastimar!”.

The Sonora (Mexico) native Letty Riv-er will continue to train “those who aren’t afraid of body slams!”

The feared professional wrestler has worked with fighters for a year, and says they are ready for the 2011 season.

Letty trains in a garage where “thanks to the support of Abraham, owner of El T-quila, we now have a ring, whereas be-fore we were training on a cement floor!”

Tough as ever, Letty heads the OIW or-ganization, the Independent wrestling of Omaha. “Being a fighter is not as difficult as being a trainer, because I have to teach them to feel like a brotherhood and take care of each other. It doesn’t matter that there are rivalries in the ring, outside the ring we are a family.”

So sports fans expect personalities like Cruz de Angel, a technical fighter and 34-year-old native of Guanajuato (Mex-ico). “My late son was called Cruz, and in honor of him I took that name.” Cruz de Angel is waiting to get in the ring, “to confront La Amenaza and El Padrino!”

El Padrino for his part, said that “I don’t want to bring anything, but I want

to finish what he throws.” El Padrino was born in Aguascalientes and took his name from that fact that he “has lots of godchil-dren!” His fights most recently were with El Rumberito and El Mago de Oz.

Speaking of El Mago de Oz, he is 24 and the youngest of the Mexicans training un-der the direction of Letty. El Mago de Oz is from Michoacan and has displayed his talent facing El Padrino and La Momia.

He will surely confront another of the new villains, his countryman the fighter Silver Strong.

Silver Strong admires Dr. Wagner and thinks his two oldest daughters prompt him to defeat his enemies, “because they are as tough as I am.”

Despite being on the same side, Silver Strong would like to challenge El Padrino or La Amenaza: “Because in fights there are betrayals.”

Upon hearing this, La Amenaza simply smiled: “What I can say is: I am the best of them all!”

Directly from Monterrey, La Amenaza has been in the ring more than 10 years “and they can’t stop me because they are still in diapers!”

Abysmal, another of the bad guys who will debut soon, said he is planning to “defeat all of the technical fighters.”

Descended from a family of fighters, Abysmal has among his fans his 3-year-old daughter and all of his family, origi-nally from Durango.

And also from Durango is the new ref-eree, known as “El Greñas”, admirer of the great figures like El Santo and Mil Mascaras: “The most difficult thing about dedicating yourself to this is when the fighters are fo-cused and don’t pay attention to wear blows land, and I am left injured!”

El programa de tutoría de arte después de la escuela con sede en el antiguo estudio del fallecido artista Kent Bellows, pone a

trabajar a un artista profesional con un estudi-ante de secundaria.

El Bellows Studio & Center for Visual Arts, localizado en la 3303 Leavenworth St. ofrece a los estudiantes un acercamiento a los artists, técnicas, influencias y recursos. Los estudiantes trabajan de forma independiente y en grupos.

Las obras de arte que han sido terminadas forman parte de los portafolios de aquellos estudiantes interesados en estudiar arte.

El centro cuenta con la participación de una mezcla diversa de estudiantes incluyendo a varios latinos en su programa de Arte Urbano. Hugo Zamorano cursaba el tercer año en la es-cuela Bryan High cuando se inscribió. El ahora es un estudiante de primer año de la Univer-sidad de Nebraska en Omaha, donde espera graduarse con un grado de arte. A Zamorano le gustaba la libertad que el centro le dio para explorar cosas nuevas.

“En el centro usted tiene un conjunto de asig-naciones, pero hay más libertad y no se trabaja por una nota, sino más bien por uno mismo”, él dijo. “También lo hace a uno esforzarse. Crecí mucho, sobre todo en la pintura. Tuve la opor-tunidad de trabajar con artistas profesionales y ellos me dieron buenos consejos sobre cómo hacer las cosas. Me ayudó mucho. Estoy muy agradecido”.

Zamorano permanece en contacto con su mentora Wanda Ewing, quien enseña en UNO. Los dos están colaborando en un mural en un vecindario en Benson.

La ex mentora de Bellows Claudia Alvarez dijo que le gustaría volver a ser mentora allí. “Fue muy divertido e inspirador el poder influenciar las vi-das de los jóvenes pensadores. Realmente disfruté

trabajar el uno-a-uno con cada uno de los estudi-antes en la creación del arte”.

El estudiante de último año de Omaha South Angel Gomez es un estudiante de Arte Urbano quien trabajo con un equipo haciendo murales, incluyendo uno en la sucursal de la biblioteca Swanson. El ha contribuído con otros murales como parte de un equipo de la escuela. Gomez, Zamorano y el mentor Gerard Pefung se uni-eron para pintar una pared de arte en vivo du-rante el Festival de Música MAHA el pasado 24 de julio.

Los estudiantes de Arte Urbano también hicieron un mural para el edificio Together Inc. en el centro de la ciudad. El programa of-rece a los estudiantes una alternativa positiva al graffiti.

Los estudiantes también hacen trabajo de servicio comunitario para los clientes: “Nue-stros estudiantes obtienen el reconocimiento por su trabajo y se sienten bien acerca de lo que están haciendo”.

Leticia Moreno, quien estudia para su GED, le gusta que el programa le ha presentado nue-vas formas de hacer las cosas. Ella y Gomez es-tán seguros de que han progresado mucho más juntos, que lo que hubieran logrado cada uno por separado.

An after-school art mentoring program based in the former studio of the late American realist Kent Bellows pairs pro-

fessional artists with high school students. The Bellows Studio & Center for Visual Arts,

3303 Leavenworth St. affords students intimate exposure to wi artists, techniques, influences and resources. Students work independently and in groups.

Completed artworks become part of portfo-lios for students interested in pursuing formal art education or art careers.

The center draws a diverse mix of students with several Latinos in its Urban Arts program. Hugo Zamorano was a Bryan High School ju-nior when he enrolled. He’s now a freshman at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he expects to graduate with an art degree. The Bryan and Bellows graduate liked the freedom the center gave him to explore new things.

“In school you have a set assignment in class but there it’s a lot more free and it’s not really for a grade, it’s for yourself,” he says. “It also pushes you. I grew a lot, especially in painting. I got to work with professional artists and they

gave me good tips on how to do things. It was helpful a lot. I appreciate it.”

Zamorano’s stayed in contact with mentor Wanda Ewing, who teaches at UNO. The two are collaborating on a Benson neighborhood mural.

Former Bellows mentor Claudia Alvarez says she would mentor there again. “It was fun and inspiring to touch the lives of young thinkers. I truly enjoyed working one-on-one with each student in making art an individual journey.”

Omaha South senior Angel Gomez is a Urban Arts student working on a team doing murals, in-cluding one at the Swanson Branch Library. He’s contributed to other murals as part of a school-based crew he paints with. Gomez joined Zamo-

rano and mentor Gerard Pefung to paint a live art wall during the July 24 MAHA Music Festival.

Urban Arts students also did a mural for the downtown Together Inc. building. The program gives students a positive alternative to graffiti-making,

“Our students work in the com-munity with businesses and organiza-tions,” says Bellows Education Manag-er Weston Thomson. “They meet the staff, tour the facility, find out about when it started, what populations it serves, its mission. Then they come back to the studio and figure out how they can take their own technique and style, along with the information and ideas, and apply it all in a mural. They

have about four to five weeks to paint on site with their mentor to make that happen. Clients usually have a reception for them at the end.”

Students also do community service work for clients.: “Our students get recognition for their work and feel good about what they’re doing.”

Leticia Moreno, studying for her GED, likes that the program introduces her to new ways of doing things,. She and Gomez are sure they’re further alon than they would have been alone.

FEAST 2010The annual F.E.A.S.T. (Friends of Education at Assumption-Guadalupe School) Gala was held on Friday, November 5 in the Raynor Center at St. Margaret Mary Parish. F.E.A.S.T. has been sponsored by the St. Margaret Mary Parish for the past 7 years to support the Assumption-Guadalupe Grade School in South Omaha. This year the event raised over $93,000. Assumption is a sister parish of St. Margaret Mary.

The event attracted 175 guests for an evening of good food, catered by At-titude on Food, an array of beautiful themed bas-kets for bidding and for a raffle, and a live auction of six great items.

Entertainment was pro-vided by the Assumption Youth Choir and by testi-monials of students from both schools giving thanks for “The Gifts I have received while attending my Catholic School”. The evening was a great success. Thanks to the hard work of Honorary Chairs, Dr. Steve and Mrs. Anne Raynor and the members of the committee.
