Today is a joyous occasion as we celebrate thecommissioning of 9 caring members of ourcongregation who have heard the call of the Lordand left their nets to follow him. This rite ofcommissioning culminates a period of extensivetraining and preparation for caring ministry throughthe Stephen Series, a special ministry of care andconcern for others. Our Stephen Ministers havestudied and practiced skills in such areas as processingfeelings, crisis intervention, asserting oneself withgentleness and rmness, and numerous other topics. After the commissioning, these Stephen Ministerswill be assigned to minister in our congregation andcommunity, working with people who are experiencingsuch life crises as hospitalization, retirement, nancial

setback, the loss of a loved one, or any of a number ofother di culties people face in daily living.

They stand poised, ready to begin this caring ministryin our midst. As we commission them and send themforth to minister, let us thank God for the love andgenerosity that inspired their response to God’s call,

and let us pray for the success of this caring ministrythat they bring to our community.

The Stephen Ministers commissioned today are:

On this Memorial Day weekend our worship includesthe well-known hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save.

You’ll note we have not included the hymn numberin the bulletin for a reason. We have chosen to usethe most familiar text setting of this hymn. Thereare no less than fourteen di erent versions as well

as additional verses written by various authors! Ourhymnal does not use the most widely used setting. The hymn was originally written in 1869 for a studentwho was about to embark on a trip across the Atlanticto America. In fact, many hymns for sailors and thosewho traveled the ocean were written during the lasthalf of the 19th century as ocean travel was the wayto travel the world. John Dykes, the man who wrotethe tune, named it Melita after the name of the islandupon which Paul was ship-wrecked in Acts 27, a ratherominous tune name! The version we have chosen isthe one from A Missionary Service Book of 1937 andis perhaps the most familiar. It is closely paired withPsalm 121. - Dr. Dan Sharp
