“What’s in a name?” You have undoubtedly heard that phrase before. Perhaps it was in an English Lit class when you were studying Romeo and Juliet. The Old Testament Hebrew word for “name” is shem, which is also the name of one of Noah’s sons, from which we get the “Shemites,” and in today’s language, the “Semites.” From the beginning, God’s people were associated with “The NAME,” as God was sometimes known. At the burning bush, Moses asked God, “Who should I say sent me? What is your name?” The name and its meaning express the character of the one bearing that name. God’s name was so holy it was not pronounced aloud, except by the high priest, one day a year, on Yom Kippur. No one but the high priest ever heard it, or knew how it was pronounced. WIth this background, we look today at the powerful name of God. The day is coming when every knee will bow at the name of Jesus, and every tongue confess that He is Lord to the glory of God the Father. We begin worship today with words of praise to our God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit for we have gathered together in the name of Jesus our risen Lord and Savior. - Dr. Dan Sharp

*Passing of the Peace St. Paul always greeted with the words, “The peace of God be with you.” This is an appropriate way to greet fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, and so we say, “The peace of the Lord be with you” and respond, “And also with you.” We then pass this greeting of peace to one another. At the passing of the peace we should earnestly desire God’s peace upon each person we greet.

ABOUT OUR GUEST PREACHER

Carmen Fowler LaBerge is a passionate Christian who understands and embraces the reality that she is already dead. Her life verse is Galatians 2:20, “It is no longer I that live, but Christ who lives in me.” She seeks to live her life as a demonstration of God’s grace and truth.

Carmen has degrees from The University of Florida and Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div.). She served as a pastor in Texas, Georgia and South Carolina. Carmen served here at First Presbyterian Church of Orlando in 2002-2003 when she was Pastor of Worship and the Executive Director of The Presbyterian Coalition. In 2009, she took the helm of The Presbyterian Lay Committee where, among other things, she serves as the Executive Editor of The Layman.

Carmen served in leadership in Presbyterians for Renewal, the Presbyterian Coalition, the New Wineskins Association of Churches, the Presbyterian Renewal Network, the Association for Church Renewal, and now serves as the Chairman of the Common Ground Christian Network. She has her finger on the pulse of what is happening not only among Presbyterians, but mainline Christianity in the USA.

Later this year, Carmen hosts a television show airing Monday evenings at 7pm, on Direct TV station 378.

Carmen is married to Jim LaBerge. They reside on a 45-acre farm west of Nashville, in Kingston Springs, Tennessee.
